@@PanchoVilla-fe8pt Not necessarily! The lower the RDA number the less it will cause damage to your teeth and gums through abrasion. The higher the RDA number the more thoroughly it will clean and it may whiten more effectively, but be careful! If you have gum recession or sensitive teeth, you may want to use a toothpaste with a lower RDA number. If you want to whiten your teeth and if your teeth and gums are relatively strong, use a higher RDA number.
I was told about 25 years ago from a young hygienist fresh out of dental school that you don't need to brush your teeth. You can use a rag to wipe off your teeth. You really need to concentrate on flossing. 25 years later, I'm just starting to understand that gums need love, too.❤ I'm an avid flosser trying to teach my 10 year year old the validity of flossing. Keep up the good work, doc. 👍
My gums would bleed and I had bad breath. I tried everything and went to my dentist. She just said do salt water gargles but that didn't work. Also flossing was painful. She recommended I do some deep cleaning which was very expensive. So basically it was either pay us or just deal with your gums bleeding. I put up with it for almost a year. Then I found your video and bought a water pick. My problem went away in a 2 weeks. My mouth feels super clean and I have no pain. Thank you for sharing advice that actually helps people rather than just trying to make money. It's been 3 years since that and I haven't had an issue.
@@OsarugueEnoghayin ~ Water Pic is a brand of a water-jet machine that squirts water in short bursts between your teeth. I'm on my 3rd one in 44 years, so, they last about 15 yrs, which is great! My first one, my fiance' bought it for me the day I got braces on my teeth. 3 yrs later, the braces came off, but I didn't want to stop using my Water Pic...so I haven't! They sell them at Target, Wal-Mart, pharmacies and online.😁
Did you think you might be vitamin C deficient? That caused my gums to bleed in the past. To be sure I have always used a waterpik because flossing is very difficult with such tight crowns in some teeth - so thankfully I didn’t use the pfas floss 😮💨
As a retired Dental Hygienist, I use a slight amount of the very basic Colgate for taste. I brushed too much over the years. Brush twice,. floss twice. Stannous Fluoride and Chlorhexidine rinse can stain. Whitening toothpaste can take some stain off but doesn't change the color of your teeth. Mostly, they want to sell you toothpaste. It's the physical act of brushing and flooding that removes plaque.
yes I'd like to know what flooding means too!! I'm so over-obsessed with brushing, I brush for an hour with lots of paste, 2x daily. Is flossing twice really important? I floss in the evenings
@@naveenjack7091 toothpaste commercials usually say 9/10 dentists recommend their toothpaste. This is the 1/10 dentist who does not recommend the toothpaste. That's the joke.
Fellow dentist here-really cool perspective you have. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the marketing of toothpastes, but unless you have a specific need (high caries risk, sensitivity, etc.) it really is unnecessary, as the main goal in oral hygiene is disruption of that biofilm. I personally use ClinPro 5000, because I have multiple restorations from my childhood that I want to keep healthy with high amounts of fluoride, and I also have sensitive teeth. I also just enjoy that minty fresh feeling toothpaste gives, even if it’s not a true indication of cleanliness. Thanks for the content, always nice to hear a fresh and grounded point of view.
My dentist told me that it doesn't matter what type or brand of toothpaste I use. There are so many out there that supposedly target so many things like plaque, tarter and gingivitis. He said I could use the cheapest most basic toothpaste and that I would be fine as long as I brushed. So instead of spending 8 or 10 dollars on toothpaste I went out and bought a tube of Aim for a dollar. All I can say is that I hope he was right...
How refreshing.... a dentist not promoting flouride. I gave up flouride months ago and my gums stopped bleeding i switched to non flouride toothpaste, this caused me to go to the dentist thinking i had a hole in my tooth because it hurt when I brushed and ate anything sweet. Last night i used flouride toothpaste to give my teeth a break from sensitivity and spent hours with bleeding gums and when i flossed today they are bleeding again. If you dont use toothpaste. How do you get the fresh feeling in the morning to get rid of the sleepy breathe? Does brushing make you feel fresh enough? Have you ever known someone to be allergic to flouride? My gums clearly don't react well to it however my dentist pushes it like most do 🙄
You can use a regular toothpaste. My mom got problem with bleeding gums too when she used whitening toothpaste. We figured they put too much of whitening substances into it and it harsh on gums.
@@donnajones2468 Maybe Hydroxyapatite toothpaste can work. If the above doesn't work, also consider your diet as well to strengthen teeth naturally to reduce sensitivity. It's not just brushing, it's about your diet as well. Consider transition to a ketogenic diet. I.e: Cut grains like rice, bread, eat less sugar. Eat things that are nutritious in vitamin D, K, C, collagen, iron, magnesium. Getting bloodwork on vitamin D, you may need to supplement to get to the 70 level where your body is at its optimal health. Do you tend to burp, maybe you have GERD?
My dentist also told me he was very skeptical about toothpaste. He had an even worse opinion on mouthwashes that just stain the teeth. Thanks for an honest video.

As the daughter of an orthodontist and a hygienist……wife of a dentist and son finishing dental school as we speak…….we need to be honest with people. Thank you so much!
I like your honesty. The cleanest my mouth ever felt was with warm salty water - due to not being able to brush because of wisdom teeth removal. My mouth felt like it was brand new.

Sooooo Impressed by your honesty! I have 2 connective tissue disorders which have lead to my teeth sharding away and now being very sensitive. One thing that has helped has been to stop eating any nuts and sunflower seeds! My health food store suggested it and it has helped immensely! And it wasnt the crunching because I can NOW EAT CRUNCHY STUFF AGAIN! Also because of the connective tissue disorders I cant floss so I carefully clean between my teeth with a toothpick or a pick like the one you showed and I can only brush once a day. I dont have a lot of teeth left because they are gradually all sharding away and not holding onto the fillings so Im hoping to be able to get those implants because I cant get dentures (my gums will blister from the friction) but up here they are over $50 thousand and I havent the money. Have you tried Biotene toothpaste is the most gentle toothpaste I've been using for over 20 years and is way more gentle than arm and hammer toothpaste, did you notice that is the only toothpaste not listed here, I'm thinking that is probably because there's nothing wrong with it. Salt water has medicinal properties which can eliminate cavities, odors and even germs. My doctor even advised that whenever I have sore throat, gargling a warm salty water would help...and surprisingly it does help

I uses a cheap toothpaste for first brush, then after I used Crest a small amount after a while I noticed my teeth becomes whiter, so that my routine now
A humble dental students perspective: Brushing itself does prevent cavities and that is backed by many studies. Fluoride has overwhelming amount of studies to support its effectiveness in reducing cavities through (1) remineralizing/rebuilding enamel and (2) decreasing the solubility/ demineralization of enamel. Fluoride is in toothpaste and thus recommended by dentist. The toxicity would occur if a 6 year old ate a tube of toothpaste, so it is important to keep toothpaste out of kids reach. An adult would have to eat over 20 tubes of tooth paste before toxicity. Here is what I see the cause of cavities are based on my clinical experience as a dental student. Many cavities are in between teeth where brushing cannot reach or reoccurring around a previous filling of a lesion between the teeth. How to prevent these extremely common cavities? FLOSS! I can’t support flossing enough because I know most of us don’t do it. Think about it like sunscreen which has gotten a lot of attention for preventing wrinkles how about flossing to prevent tooth loss? something just as if not more unaesthetic not to mention has functional implications like not being able to eat! Let’s floss and sunscreen more this year 🎉 So back to this video: there are no clinical studies that are referenced and he conveniently promotes his powder. And he doesn’t have any disclaimers which is irresponsible because as a licensed dentist he inherently has influence over the general public’s opinion. Also dentist don’t make money off of people buying toothpaste, Colgate (etc) does. This man did commodify this video. It is interesting how people believe this dentist because he is saying something “different”. Like a social experiment. And it shows again the influence a license professional has over the public which is understandable. Abrasion is a type of wear that studies show is closely linked to toothbrush bristle hardeness. Oral B has a cool feature on their toothbrush where it lights up red when you are pressing too hard. (Not sponsored ) I notice a lot of men are very heavy handed and maybe a reminder could help. And of course avoiding hard bristle tooth brushes. Moral of the story: FLOSS, brush with medium to soft bristle brush, fluoride helps strengthen enamel, and continue learning and investing in yourself. My great-grandmother was from Latvia. She lived 101 years and had ALL very white teeth until the last day of her life. She never used toothpaste. Her secret was to brush her teeth in the morning and evening before going to bed with water, and then rinse her mouth with a glass of water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
That's what they do in the old days. Also, they took flouride out of the water and if you want flouride treatment at the dentist, it cost you money to do so.
Best toothpaste is Arm & Hammer for sensitive teeth. Been using it for years, they stay squeaky clean all day, my dentist is always impressed with my teeth

i found that everyone's body, and hence teeth and gums are different. i used to snack at night while working, and never brushed thereafter, and this caused many problems. as simple as just gaggling, cleaning out the feed stuck in my teeth, so it didn't turn acidic and eat away at my enamel worked after a while. but the damage was so far gone, that i had more fillings than teeth. keep gaggling, especially after eating, and get away from abrasieve brushes if your teeth gums are weaker. look at your teeth in the mirror every week. and see a dentist every 6 months just for cleaning and some expert opinion. but do 90% of the work at home every time you eat ..
I have been using Hello charcoal toothpaste--since I had chemotherapy, I can't use fluoride toothpaste. I can't explain the feeling I got when I 1st brushed with regular toothpaste for the first time after chemotherapy. Immediate buzzing sensation followed by burning. Literal burning. Took twice brushing for oncologist to figure out it's the toothpaste. He has since started his own "in house" stdy of his patients who received cisplatin. NEVER take cisplatin! I love the Hello paste. Lol, you can actually drink orange juice after without the nastiness like from regular pastes.
Toothpaste with xylitol is supposed to be so great for teeth and gums health. I use a non-fluoride toothpaste with xylitol. Can't imagine not using toothpaste.
if you think non-fluoride is good, its not it does not protect your teeth Flouride is actually the one thing that protects your teeth from bacteria that's why they tell you don't wash your mouth after brushing your teeth SO THE FLUORIDE STAYS ON THERE IT PROTECTS YOUR TEETH. if you want you can do whatever.
In the early 70s I worked in a pharmacy and a dentist said he cleaned his teeth with soot, salt and peroxide. Thought he was joking but he was serious. Never tried it though myself
Using salt everyday dries out mouth teeth. Warm salt water gargle once a week as a mouth wash not a bad idea since salt has healing property, not daily though as i mentioned. Peroxide too acidic not recommended

Absolutely NOT!!! Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic and it will eat away at your enamel. If you drink apple cider vinegar diluted in water for other health benefits, be sure to used a straw or rinse your teeth afterwards. You do not want to get ACV on your teeth AT ALL!
Maybe Aleppo Soap would help. I just wanted to share info, since I am surprised myself, but I found today, like some really recommend using natural soap for teeth. (Aleppo can be used also on skin, hair etc.). I will try it with coconut oil. Others also wrote they still use once a week additionally soda or corbonate, but I will try thin clay powder (Luvos Heilerde)
Coconut oil isn’t even supposed to be used anyway. Sesame, mustard, or I think it was sunflower oil is what’s traditionally used. Coconut, olive, etc. I’d just basically the “convenient” way but doesn’t have near the same benefits. Also, I’d recommend waiting a bit between oil pulling and brushing, just as you would, or should, with eating or drinking
@@another_one2852 just came across this channel and saw your comment regarding oil pulling. As someone who has used oil pulling I disagree with what you said and if the doctor said what you said, I also disagree with him too. As long as the oil is natural, it's okay to use.

They sell them at Target, Wal-Mart, pharmacies and online.😁
I went carnivore and teeth improved.
Oxalates caused my problems like teeth cracking.
Did you think you might be vitamin C deficient? That caused my gums to bleed in the past. To be sure I have always used a waterpik because flossing is very difficult with such tight crowns in some teeth - so thankfully I didn’t use the pfas floss 😮💨
How about I UT a Hydroflosser that reverses polarity
As a retired Dental Hygienist, I use a slight amount of the very basic Colgate for taste. I brushed too much over the years. Brush twice,. floss twice. Stannous Fluoride and Chlorhexidine rinse can stain. Whitening toothpaste can take some stain off but doesn't change the color of your teeth. Mostly, they want to sell you toothpaste. It's the physical act of brushing and flooding that removes plaque.

It's wonderful to know a dentist who has his patients good oral health in his ❤️ heart.
"9 out of 10 dentists recommend..." We finally found the one

lmaooo
Which one?
Hey wade . I use prevident 5000. Is it ok if I don’t ride after using the toothpaste ?
Ride what, and what does riding have to do with oral care ? 😂 No disrespect intended, I suspect autocorrect betrayed you.

My gums clearly don't react well to it however my dentist pushes it like most do 🙄
None flouride Mouth wash and tongue scraper. Brush your teeth with water scrap your tongue then mouth wash then floss
You can use a regular toothpaste. My mom got problem with bleeding gums too when she used whitening toothpaste. We figured they put too much of whitening substances into it and it harsh on gums.
@Pencil-o1p as soon as I use toothpaste. My gums bleed terribly with flouride, not with non flouride but I get sensitive teeth

Let’s floss and sunscreen more this year 🎉
So back to this video: there are no clinical studies that are referenced and he conveniently promotes his powder.

Thanks for doing this one - I have been wondering about an honest review. Was pleasantly surprised you are also in the mitten as I am! 🖐🏻
Honest doctor with the honest review 🙌🙏
I was really hoping you'd discuss that Sensodyne Rapid you have there on the table.
He doesn’t discuss it but at 4:20 he has the list of abrasivenesses for each toothpaste
I have used it for a while for my sensitive and yellow teeth and it is amazing! Sensitivity is gone in a couple weeks and my teeth have become noticeably whiter.
I think what I will do is to brush with sensodyne and floss in the evening and in the morning brush without a toothpaste. I am dental professional too and we have ppl who use fluoride free toothpaste and they tend to have caries so I wouldn’t go long periods of time without a toothpaste. Thank you for the helpful video.
@Kay Holiday stains? I don’t drink coffee or tea or wine or smoke. So I don’t get staining. Don’t worry I am a dental care professional. I do use toothpaste in the morning but will try to use less and very gentle toothpaste. I can’t go without a toothpaste. Maybe on a day when I stay home.
That's what I was thinking too. Fluoride toothpaste is a must imo. Didn't talked about it. Crucial information
This is the one out of ten dentist. Lolz. I love it.
I have to use Sensodyne in the box with green on it. It is a light mint. A dentist I had seen put in a crown that was too big and it has messed up my mouth. Major pain. Can't use the toothpaste I used to use. This is the only stuff that doesn't hurt me. Thank God I found this.
So can we buy the perio mix?
Not enough info concerning sensitive teeth (me). I could see Sensodyne on the table but you didn't mention it? 😯
Said no toothpaste at all
@@cihanalici1566 Still no mention of sensitive teeth.
Any recommendations with low abrassiveness, whitening, and no fluoride?
When I lived in Europe I used Blanx white and it was the ONLY toothpaste in my whole life that actually whiten my teeth.
Hey I have a question did u use the normal one or the extra white toothpaste the black one or the white one?
@@ella6620 it was the classic white one. Non Charcoal. It takes time but it works. Just in america it cost like $20 to get 1, while in Europe it's like $6
@@MrVuittonDon Great. Thank uu & have a nice day
Wow! Thank YOU SO much Dr for the Great and valuable information!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Such good information. I have a lot of issues now with my teeth and I thought it was the toothpaste that was causing it with a slow and steady erosion.
Please check your diet too, high consumption of acidic foods and drinks can lead to erosion also. I will do a video about it soon.
I use real charcoal a few times a year for teeth whitening, it does the job.
Where can I buy the perio mix?
I really like your video. I do agree with you in saying that we don’t need toothpaste. Regular Crest toothpaste contains sodium fluoride. Just wanted to know your comments on this particular toothpaste. Thank you. I’m also in the medical profession so I understand what you’re saying.
In his video he asked to hear from us and yet has never answered any questions. I think I might just keep using regular crest because I can’t afford to go to the Dentist and I don’t want to right now because of the omicron variant. Last thing I need is being that close to somebody else breathing in my face

Thank you Doc for this video, I will start to use only water and soft brush from now onwards. Please Doctor what about apple cider vinegar for cleaning the teeth, is it advisable? Thank you
Research EROSION please.
No, apple cider vinegar is definitely Not recommended
@@happyhealthysmiles7931 Thank you
Absolutely NOT!!! Apple cider vinegar is highly acidic and it will eat away at your enamel. If you drink apple cider vinegar diluted in water for other health benefits, be sure to used a straw or rinse your teeth afterwards. You do not want to get ACV on your teeth AT ALL!
Dont
What about mouthwash? What is the best ones, ,which ones to watch out for, con I use it more than twice a day? Thank you
Regular toothpaste makes my teeth really sensitive. Especially the ones made for sensitive teeth!!!
Yep
Dr. Nemeth , are you able to do a video on oil pulling with coconut oil? I’d love a video from your perspective on that!
I saw his video on this. Basically it's all hype and doesnt nothing.
So, that means coconut oil also does a good job. If you use oil pulling, it helps with halitosis as well as overall health of teeth based on my experience. I didn't believe it until I tried it. 🤷

OMG. Finally what I have thought to be true for many years has been confirmed by an actual expert. I always thought that the brush alone was enough.
I do think that charcoal is good though but once in a while.
With the shortage of supplies, it's EVEN harder to find a toothpaste that's not too abrasive. Arm and Hammer's low abrasive toothpaste is SO hard to find and limited to stock. I Settled on Sensodyne Fresh Mint for a few months.
I used to get canker sores now and then when I brushed my teeth with Crest toothpaste. I decided to switch to Pronamel Sensodyne some years ago and haven’t had a canker sore since. Like you, my husband is a Dentist, now retired. He doesn’t use toothpaste.😊🙏🏻
Same. Switched to sensodyne years ago and never had a sore since.
Hi Doctor, So we can use Perio Mix powder for teeth cleaning ??
Please answer this, Thank you!
Have you scientifically compared the tooth health of large groups of people who brush with toothpaste versus those that brush without toothpaste?
@Sister Mary Clements Theory in science does not mean hypothesis!
Didn’t he show the six month study in the video?
Where's dental digest when u need him
I use Castor Oil usually mixed with essential oil (peppermint, ginger, nutmeg, and/or oregano) instead of toothpaste. The last time I went to get a teeth cleaning, the dentist was surprised at how clean they were.
Same here they were surprised how clean my teeth were but I use toothpaste.
Castor oil? That's a new one for me. I'm allergic to most toothpaste (think it's the sls in almost all of the common brands) so what I buy is pretty expensive. I also dislike mint of any kind, which almost all toothpaste is flavored with. I will definitely keep this in mind. What are the proportions? Do you add any kind of sweetener? Even just a bit?
@@joanwood9480 I have a whole assortment of essential oils that I use, not just peppermint. Ginger is great, though the taste is pretty weird... doesn't taste like actual ginger. Clove oil is great. You can dilute essential oils if you don't have the palette for it. I tend to over do them.
@@joanwood9480 You can also just use Castor oil, sans flavoring. And, I never use any sort of sweetener. That pretty much runs counter to what I'm doing.
@@joanwood9480 No sweeteners needed. You can do Castor oil straight or add any essential oil you'd like. I suggest finding a larger/wider toothbrush. I use a Radius Flex toothbrush.
Thank you for very informative video! Could you, please, write down a link to that science research?
