This is a good starting point but it is one of 3 stages in my opinion. Step 1 Improve mucin production as this is the protective lining of your gut - supplement with NAG (N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine). Step 2 Improve secretion of Secretory IgA (immune cells that attack pathogens and support beneficial symbionts) - increase Vitamin A. Step 3 Strengthen intestinal permeability - Supplement with Glutamine.
What I've found has fixed my gut after 20-30 yrs of bloating, stomach aches, ect and believing it was just normal and to live with it. I've almost completely cut gluten from my diet, (lol, ok my wife has cut it from my diet), and I don't remember feeling this good. Such a simple fix. I'll never go back to gluten. It's fixed my guts more than I thought possible.
For me grains/gluten are the biggest trigger too. Not the only one, but gut health got better within a few days after cutting out all grains besides white rice which is technically a grain but has no gluten.

Gentleman, we have to be careful when promoting the benefits of glutamine. Glutamine is one of the fuels that cancer cells needs to survive. Ingesting high levels of glutamine could scientifically increase your cancer proliferation. If you don't believe my words, please look at the many scientific studies that confirm this.
So is glutamine in the natural form of food protein like chicken turkey and fish and pork and for someone who might have cancer should they go on a no animal fat diet?
@@rolandarolle4682 It’s a protein not a fat so you’d have to avoid eating animal products altogether. I believe some specialists do recommend a low protein, keto type diet for fighting cancer but do your own research obviously.
Just to clarify for people not understanding: Is L-glutamine related to MSG? And while their names sound similar, and they both come from the same family of amino acids known as the glutamates, they are different. Glutamic acid is best known as a component of monosodium glutamate, while L-glutamine may be known as a supplement used by athletes to help improve immune health and recovery.
Also, MSG isn’t the big bad boogey man everyone thinks. Any adverse reactions are only present in a small percentage and it’s similar to a lactate reaction.
Some autistics have trouble converting glutamate to glutamine and GABA. Bifidobacterium Adolescentis could help with that. It does in my house, where we have less excitatory reactions. It's a probiotic though, which is counter to the message in this video. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37347184/

My GABA receptors are damaged from Benzodiazepines. I was put on them when I had my first panic attack at age 16. I wanted off them even before I knew how damaging they were but I had a psychiatrist that said I’d always have to stay on them. A nurse at that clinic who picked up on them being the actual problem switched me to another psychiatrist there at he wanted me off them right away. Went to detox and almost died. Then my husband did a lot of research and I’ve been trying to get off them ever since. When he discovered the Dr. Heather Ashton Method online in her free manual. That’s helped a lot but there’s still been interruptions in the healing process. GABA receptors can heal but it’s hard because these drugs are so physically hard to come off of. The addiction for me is merely physical.
May I ask how long have you been on them ? i can totally relate to you as I a have been taking them for about 22 years now. I have been to a detox clinic and they tried to wean me of them in 3 weeks. I too almost died and this clinic did not even think this happened because of the withdrawl. The second I left the clinic I went right back on taking them. I am taking the absolut personal minimum at this point, but I cant get any lower. In the morning, by 9 a clock I start looosing feeling in my right hand and tingling fingers. it is an unbearable feeling. So I take a half and it ges away after about 30 minutes. I have become really healthy with my diet and everything but the benzos I jzst cant get under control.
@ I’ve been on since I was 16 and I’m 44. The Dr. Heather Ashton Method helped me. It’s cross tapering from a short acting Benzo to a longer acting Benzo. Then slowly tapering off. Which one are you on? I’ve had two times since getting from Clonazapam to Valium that I almost got off Valium but my antidepressants interfered. First by giving me Serotonin Syndrome in which case the only treatment was Benzos 🙄 and then this summer mania and insomnia so I had to updose. So I decided this time to get off the antidepressant first. It didn’t need to be as long of a taper but about 7-8 weeks. I started sleeping better. If you can look up the Dr. Heather Ashton manual online and get onto the longest acting Benzo like Valium and then do a slow taper like 6-8 months. It might be your best chance. Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor so talk to your health care provider before starting your plan. I’ll pray for you 🙏 💜
Thank you for sharing that. I just posted above about fluoroquinolones - which the benzo recovery community says to totally avoid. I have to say, getting off only one year of use of 1mg klon for sleep while taking care of my 96-year-old father was the most absolute horrific experience of my life. There is nothing else that even comes close. Lots of suffering. The suffering is beyond description. Anyone here thinking of using them, I beg you to reconsider. I am glad you found Ashton's manual. I hope you are successful. I am in year 6 of healing and I am happy to say that I have come very very far. Those pills are no joke. I still have a few odd symptoms that are fairly mild. My gut still isn't 100%. The horrible anxiety was pretty much gone for me by month 14-16 and after that it was mostly killer exhaustion, beyond words. Like....too much effort to blink and breathe. Take good care of yourself as you recover. I'm so glad you are making the attempt to get off. I went too fast - 9 weeks - because I didn't understand they need to be tapered for sometimes years. Go slow.

This is very interesting because glutamate along with glucose is what feeds cancer cells. People who have recovered understand that they needed to starve those cells so I think that the idea that we "need" isn't true if our cells can run on ketones while healing

Glutamine is an amino acid found in a variety of foods, both plant- and animal-based. Below are some common sources: Animal-based sources: 1. Meat: Beef, pork, and chicken are excellent sources of glutamine. 2. Fish: Salmon, cod, and mackerel also contain glutamine. 3. Dairy: Milk, cheese, yogurt, and other dairy products have significant amounts of glutamine. 4. Eggs: A good source of protein and glutamine. Plant-based sources: 1. Vegetables: Spinach, cabbage, parsley, and broccoli are particularly high in glutamine. 2. Legumes: Lentils, chickpeas, and beans contain glutamine. 3. Nuts and seeds: Almonds, sunflower seeds, and peanuts provide good amounts of glutamine. 4. Whole grains: Foods like oats, wheat, and quinoa are good sources. Fruits: Fruits generally contain lower levels of glutamine compared to other foods, but some options include: • Bananas • Apples • Papayas Other sources: • Fermented foods: Miso and kimchi can be good sources due to their fermentation process. If you’re considering glutamine for specific health purposes, a balanced diet incorporating these foods should suffice, though supplements are also an option if needed.
…if you take GABA it is not supposed to cross the blood brain barrier ( absolute minuscule) it’s too large a molecule, so it will have no calming effect ( and many people say it has no affect ) …BUT if you take GABA and within a short period of time you feel tired…then your blood brain barrier is broken…which the speaker terms ‘ leaky brain’…so , here is a method to see if indeed your bbb is intact…and if this be the case, if someone has potential neurological issues, that will predispose one to ‘stroke’…because Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter…consequently, glutamine supplementation may be contra indicated…especially with afib…however, the speaker is talking about athletes, not older people…but assuredly many seniors subscribe to Thomas…and should ask their Doctors before considering taking Glutamine…
gaba and glutamine are different things. Whether gaba crosses the healthy BBB or not is yet clear. The effect could also be transported via activation of the parasymapthetic nerves, taht is gaba receptors in the Enteric Nerve system
I heard that the small intestine need glutamine/glutamate - not from MSG (monosodium glutamate), but neither did I hear where it should come from. I did not hear any recommended source for glutamine but I know that glutamine is in all animal proteins. Current recommendations are to consume 1 gram of animal protein for every pound of ideal body weight. ...Again, I heard no recommendations here... But maybe I missed it.
There are a number of glutamine supps (each containing several supps) which are designed to support gut lining. Protein I’m not sure has same effect and the glutamine supps say to take on empty stomach.
glutamine is from bone broth, glutamate is from uncle roger available as MSG. Yet, cooking bone broth from bones also creates gutamate frm glutamine.... ys the kitchen is a lot like a chemical lab. glutamine and glutamate are chemically similar, but not identical, particularly glutamate is NOT the salt of glutamine.
Glutamine is only 1 amino acid. Animal protein contains many different amino acids, only 4-5% of which is glutamine. In order to get 4-5 grams of glutamine you need to consume 100 grams of protein. Let's say you weigh 80 kilos and follow 2gr/kg: you'll have consumed 6.5-8gr of glutamine. To get to 10gr you would need up to 250gr of protein. Between 5-15 grams is considered moderate and safe (20+ for prolonged periods may affect the body's natural ammonia breakdown mechanisms). So 5gr on top of your protein intake will get you to about 12-13gr, assuming 80kg of body weight (assuming not overweight). Without excessive general protein intake which often causes gastrointestinal issues without additional hypertrophic benefits (unless you're juiced). L-Glutamine specifically has been shown to improve gut health in studies by improving the intestine lining, and anecdotally for me personally it makes my weak stomach quite a bit stronger. Long story short: it's safe and probably beneficial to supplement 5gr on top of your "2gr/kg bodyweight" protein intake. On days where you're consuming a lot more protein than usual you may want to skip although occasionally exceeding 20gr/d is unlikely to cause any issues.
B12 needs to interact with acid in the stomach to be bio-available in the rest of the body. So problems with indigestion and heartburn can be linked to B12 deficiency. In particular H-pylori infection, which causes excess stomach acid and ultimately ulcers, is a common cause of B12 deficiency.Jun 27, 2012
I saw videos that said the lack of acidity (lower), causes the top stomach flap to not shut, leading to acid reflux and high bacteria (H-Pylori). The suggestion was to drink an 8 oz glass of water with 1 tablespoon of vinegar mixed in, to add acidity, shut the open top stomach valve, and kill H-1pylori. Doing this helped my stomach a great deal, from acid reflux and indigestion.
Thank you for that! I am also working on gut bacteria with kefir and Greek yogurt. I have also been drinking more water than before (which was none) and Celtic sea salt.
You must be feeding the H-Pylori sugar. Though it is normal to have some H-Pylori. Excessive amount of sugar or foods that are turned into sugar can contribute an overgrowth of H-Pylori. Google search "What foods feed H-Pylori". You will be surprised to see that even carrots feed H-Pylori. AND google search what foods kill H-Pylori.

Look at Chinese medicine/diet - TCM. The Chinese don't eat a lot of salads. Stir frying your veggies/meat for a couple of minutes will not lose vitamins. I am the same as you and need to eat food that is warming. It is very hard on my stomach eating raw/cold foods especially for people with weak digestions. It takes a great deal of energy to digest. The other thing is don't drink cold drinks while eating as this will wreak havoc on your gut further causing gas and bloating putting your digestive fire out.

Summary
🔬 Gut Fuel Mechanism: The small intestine depends on glutamine for energy, crucial for maintaining gut integrity and preventing leaky gut.
🌱 Importance of Butyrate: Butyrate, produced by gut microbes, fuels the large intestine, showcasing the distinct energy needs of gut regions.
🛡 Immune and Gut Link: The gut acts as the body’s frontline defense, with its thin cellular wall playing a critical role in blocking external threats.
⚙ Glutamine's Role Beyond Muscle: While not vital for muscle growth, glutamine is essential for gut health and overall immune function.
🏃 Exercise and Gut Health: Intense physical activity can deplete glutamine levels, leading to leaky gut and associated symptoms.
💊 Chronic Stress and Digestion: Chronic stress affects digestion by disrupting blood flow to the intestines and contributing to conditions like bacterial overgrowth.
🧠 Gut-Brain Axis: A leaky gut can lead to brain inflammation, worsening conditions like anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders due to neurotransmitter imbalances.
⚖ Nutrient Synergy: Adequate levels of magnesium and vitamin B6 are critical for converting glutamate to GABA, ensuring relaxation and balanced brain function.
🕊 Quick Interventions: Supplements like glutamine and magnesium can provide immediate relief while addressing long-term gut health goals.
Insights Based on Numbers
20 grams/day: Recommended glutamine supplementation for individuals recovering from surgery or intense physical activity.
4-5 grams every 4 hours: Supplementation helped an athlete reduce race time by three hours and eliminated gastrointestinal symptoms.

I've almost completely cut gluten from my diet, (lol, ok my wife has cut it from my diet), and I don't remember feeling this good. Such a simple fix. I'll never go back to gluten. It's fixed my guts more than I thought possible.
that suggests you are gluten intolerant/have celiac disease. there's a simple blood test to confirm celiac.
For me grains/gluten are the biggest trigger too. Not the only one, but gut health got better within a few days after cutting out all grains besides white rice which is technically a grain but has no gluten.
I would say not just gluten, but wheat (gluten grains, but mainly wheat) as a whole (lectins, gliadin, etc) is a huge problem
If you eat non-nybridized wheat like Einkorn, you likely will be fine. Modern wheat strains have 30 times the amount of gluten of traditional strains.

True
Just to clarify for people not understanding:
Is L-glutamine related to MSG?
And while their names sound similar, and they both come from the same family of amino acids known as the glutamates, they are different. Glutamic acid is best known as a component of monosodium glutamate, while L-glutamine may be known as a supplement used by athletes to help improve immune health and recovery.
Also, MSG isn’t the big bad boogey man everyone thinks. Any adverse reactions are only present in a small percentage and it’s similar to a lactate reaction.
Just because the names sound similar doesn't mean they have the same attributes.

I have become really healthy with my diet and everything but the benzos I jzst cant get under control.

Glutamine is an amino acid found in a variety of foods, both plant- and animal-based. Below are some common sources:
Animal-based sources:
Plant-based sources:
Fruits:
Fruits generally contain lower levels of glutamine compared to other foods, but some options include:
• Bananas
• Apples
• Papayas
Other sources:
• Fermented foods: Miso and kimchi can be good sources due to their fermentation process.

I take GABA gummies and within 30 mins im super calm and puts me to sleep. I can’t take it during day or I’ll get really tired.
Listen to your own body. ❤
I did an anti-inflammatory diet and supplemented to get rid of autoimmune symptoms due to chronic stress. Symptoms were gone within 2-3 months.
which supplements did you use?
I'd love to know what you took, too.
that makes a lot of sense I started taking high doses of b6 and I sleep so good now.
Don't mean to sound like a wet blanket, but B6 is the one B vitamin that can accumulate in tissues. You may not want to stay too high for too long.
Love GABA - been using it and Intestinew for Over 20 years for myself and clients - like adding a smile to your day 😌 what magnesium?
Interesting video, but please tell us how to take glutamine
On days where you're consuming a lot more protein than usual you may want to skip although occasionally exceeding 20gr/d is unlikely to cause any issues.
glutamine is in all kind of protein sources, including, of course, from plants, the best and the only which correlates with longevity in humans.
Glad this popped up in my feed - thank you for the helpful info!
Great video, so informative. Thank you, guys 🙂
Since cancer depends in glucose and glutamine to survive, is there a way to take L glutamine without it feeding the cancer?
I want what he's on. His brain is incredibly high functioning. What is he eating/taking every day?
(Part 2) The hardest part is waiting for the body to adjust to the change. It is getting better but it is taking time.
I have H-Pylori AND super high levels of B-12 🤣 what does that mean??
You must be feeding the H-Pylori sugar. Though it is normal to have some H-Pylori. Excessive amount of sugar or foods that are turned into sugar can contribute an overgrowth of H-Pylori. Google search "What foods feed H-Pylori". You will be surprised to see that even carrots feed H-Pylori. AND google search what foods kill H-Pylori.
I’d like to take glutamine for intestinal health, but found that it feeds some types of cancer. And I had colon cancer 2 years ago. Can I take glutamine?
People not understanding, the guy said glutamine supplementation is advisable for people that are exercising frequently and not for normal joe that just go from work to home . If you are an athlete then glutamine might be a good idea but certainly not need it for sedentary individuals.😮
Oooh, then being a normal Joe is good for my budget! 😂
They were also talking about people with gut issues.
One of the best videos ‘for me’ that I have watched. Thank you, Thomas! ❤
What is recommended for someone who has taken antibiotics long-term?
Sleep is #1, before nutrients and exercise (#2 & #3).
Breath before sleep and during sleep ✨🙏🏻✨🌌✨
Oh snap ❤🎉
Just shut up with that parrot'ed garbage. I sleep 8 hours a night and lift 3-5x per week. Been living like that for the last 18 years. I'm 34, 6'1" 185 lbs, less than 10 percent body fat. I deadlifted 505lbs at only 195 lbs a few years ago.
My gut has been FUCKED for 30 years. Sleep and exercise do NOTHING for the gut.
@@Blessed2XS Even better than breath is breath work, nostril breath work exercises ..
then sleep breathing becomes a paramount state of bliss ✨🌌✨🙏🏻✨
I note that Dr Sherr is quite tense and speaks fast in the nervous way that is commonly observed in health food industry.
He needs to ease up on the glutamine, lol.
Great interview! Would love to hear more from him:)
What brand of Glutamine do you recommend?
I have been taking Glutamine Plus from 4Life Research. Very good product so far.
This is the most fascinating video, thank you both SO much!👌
What is a good sign/test to know if your gut is working well? Stool samples?
Thank you
What about Glutamine and cancer??? From what I have read, / seen, Cancer requires high levels of Glutamine so it can grow at a high pace.. and the "latest" is to restrict Glutamine....how would that work???
Anybody what's the outcome of the video?? In other words what should we take as supplements gaba or glutamine or what ??
Nothing. Just try a healthy diet.
So if Dr. Seyfried says inhibiting Glutamine helps stop cancer cells from proliferating. According to Dr Sherr says how important it is and taking huge doses of it is important, is he talking about something different?
I've had gut problems since I started eating healthy and exercising. Too much salad gives me major gas. My sleep is not great, not enough deep sleep continuity. 🤔
I'm going to try glutamine.
Stop drinking caffeine. Cut out dairy and gluten. And don't eat anything but brown rice chicken and guacamole for 2 weeks. Thank me later
Raw veggies is the hardest to digest… that’s why.
@@andriajones6884 Thanks for your advice. I will try and keep to cooked vegetables and avoid cold water when I eat. 👍
Gut problem since started eating healthy! That makes sense. Maybe it's not actually healthy food?!
14:42 Getting “too much” MSG, and I’d wake up throwing up, thinking I got food poisoning when no one else in the dinner group got sick. Ended up taking me years to figure it out.
Not uncommon, Happy to hear that you've figured this out!
I've heard glycine and taurine are good to supplement for life extension and needed by everyone, but I just read that glycine actually REMOVES glutamine from the body. I'm so confused!
What 😭 I take glycine. I’m so confused now too
If I take anything with glutamine or glutathione in it I get severely depressed. My daughter and nephew had the same reaction. So how are people like us supposed to get more?
But if you have cancer, then what do you do? 🤷♀️
I was expecting to be mentioned on the video...
@@LefterisAn Same. I bought some glutamine a while ago for my bad gut but never ended up using much of it, seems too risky - many people have early stage cancer without being aware of it.

Massive amount of Vitamin C, 2 and half spoons until you go for toilet, cleanses blood stream and some even did fix many dieases including this one. But you have a lot more options for this one, just look around and pick one you feel like you wanna try the most. Have fun!

Thoughts on the correlation of glutamine and certain types of cancer which is thrown around lately?
Glutamine is mTor activating so if you are taking it, you also take time away from it too, intermittent fasting for example!
@@Drscottsherr I read that it's good to take glutamine on an empty stomach. I usually ate my first meal at around 11/12 am. Since I started taking glutamine I take it at that time alone. It fills my stomach a bit and I have no problems to eat my first meal 30-60min after that. Technically glutamine breaks the fast but I read that taking it on an empty stomach is good for glutamine absorption and it also allows me to push my first meal later in the day which makes it easier to have 2 good meals a day. Besides cutting cutting ou grains/gluten and taking glutamine, fasting and just have 2 good meals a day had the biggest impact on my gut healing so far!
My issue with supplements is that they almost always are high in heavy metals. Maybe they are levels approved by FDA but unfortunately the FDA levels deemed safe need to be refined.
Psychedelics have tremendous medical value. Them being illegal is stupid.
I think is best way to explain deficiencies of whatever substances that can reach easily audiences of all levels of knowledge is talking in terms of what specific foods to take and which ones to avoid. Mentioning what foods have such vitamins, ways to prepare them and what other foods to avoid in order to prevent malabsorption is easily to take notes and remember
Interesting...oxalates damage the gut and deplete B6. I can see how oxalates could play a role in all this.
Loo up the relationship between oxalates and calcium.
Just have a piece of cheese which absorbs oxalates if there is no cheese in the meal.
Awesome video thanks Lads! Can you confirm mg dose of Glutamine for gut maintenance or recommend any brands or things to look for please? Thanks
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
Can you help with the reliable source I would really appreciate it. Many people talk about mushrooms and psychedelics but nobody talks about where to get them. Very hard to get a reliable source here in Australia. Really need!
Yes Steve_porss1, I share similar experiences with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction. Psilocybin mushrooms have been a game-changer for me, aiding greatly in my recovery and sobriety.
I wish those were more accessible here.
Microdosing was the next thing I planned for my husband. He's 59 & facing many mental health issues, probably CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma for 8 days. Sadly, I had to get a TPO because he's 6'6, over 300 pounds, and displaying violent behavior, always talking about hurting others. He's really aggressive. If anyone out there knows about BPD, is it common to have an obsession with violence?
Is he on instagram?
Steve_porss1 is the man

Really awesome video!
So how can we increase glutamine? Only through supplements? How much do we need? Thank you 🙏
Glutamine made my depression worse and it’s also linked to cancer.
I really needed this video.. I went through a terrible benzodiazepine withdrawal that I sware I am still suffering from til this day.. 7 years ago!! And I guess my gaba receptors “down regulated” or whatever and I have had all sort of issues I know I’ve stayed in fight or flight for years and I have had terrible terrible stomach issues and not producing bile.
I’ve had Ulcerative Colitis for 16 years. So tired of biologics and Asocol that only sort of works. SODIUM BUTYRATE stops all flare ups within a day or two, and it’s cheap👍🏼👍🏼
Just tried this and things went a bit sideways....BUT I was also on holiday and eating a lot of bread...so maybe it was that. I will give it another go. What dose were you using. Thanks!
which sodium butyrate do you take? Which brand?

Is glutamine the same as L- glutamine? I feel funny for asking but I need to know thank yew
Just go carnivore, beef and eggs with the occasional lamb, goat, fish. Take a few supplements along with DMSO, Iodine and Meth blue and you will feel amazing.
You can't just blanket statement things for everyone's health. Glad that worked for you though.
No, it isn't right for everyone, really
Not optimal for the microbiome, long term.
I heard many years ago that MSG was originally made from fish scales, and thus had no negative side effects such as the common synthetic MSG of today.
Glutamine and cancer, what are your thoughts?
