Budget Waveceptor Watches WV-58A and WV-58DA - In Depth Review

  • Recently I've posted watch reviews of some of Casio's radio controlled "atomic" watches, including several G-shock models with "tough solar" rechargeable batteries. Meanwhile, there are some less-costly watches from Casio which still have a lot of attractive features. In this video I'll focus particularly on the WV58A and WV58DA watches. I also briefly acknowledge other, very similar Casio watches. These are not G-shock watches and they don't have "tough solar" recharging, but they are still very interesting, budget watches that DO have radio controlled, atomic timekeeping. And you can easily find the watches in this video for prices ranging from just $27 all the way up to around $45. I consider those prices to be a tremendous bargain for what are very useful watches, especially for younger watch users.
    The watches in this video use CR1620 batteries which will last about 3 years with normal use. The two watches featured the most in this video use Casio's module 3054. You can download the official manual for that module as a PDF from Casio's website.

    Hi Greg, Thank you for this review/tutorial. I just got this model watch and the first thing I'm doing with it is watching this video (again) to familiarize myself and get it all sorted out the way I want it. Have enjoyed watching your other videos too, always relaxing. Keep up the good work. Thanks again, -Doug.

    The in depth review of the Casio Wave Ceptor watch in this video is amongst if not the very best most informative detailed review of any product i have ever seen on video before now and yes i have the black resin strap version of it. My only main concern and serious drawback to the watch itself is the quality of the resin strap which after one or two years becomes brittle and uncomfortable to wear, but other than that this is a feature rich super accurate time piece at pocket money prices.

    Great video, thanks! Somewhere on youtube, can't remember the guy's name is a good video on reception. He is on the edge of the German signal and discovered by chance that a long tubular metal object acts as a good antennae for the watch. He leaves the watch wrapped around his bike cross bar, weight lifting bar, pullup bar etc and they work every time where usually that spot in his house is a dead zone.

    Absolutely wonderful video Greg! I've worn the metal version of this watch for, well, I think decades. I'm on my 4th or 5th one now. They are attractive and functional. Anyway, you really know your watches. After owning these for so long, I thought I pretty much knew everything about them. But, you showed me some stuff I didn't know--more than I want to admit if the truth be told.
    I don't know why you say this is an "entry" level watch and imply that it is for people on a budget. I probably could afford any watch if I really wanted to, but I choose this one because of the massive functionality. What would you recommend for someone who wanted to step up beyond "entry level"? I don't think I found any watch at any price that combined the attractiveness durability and functionality of this watch, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.
    As for others, I would (obviously) highly recommend this watch.
    I look forward to some of your videos of other topics. Thanks again for a GREAT video!
    Oh--one more question, and comment. Comment first: I found adjusting the wristband to be an absolute bear with normal household tools. Things that would fit into the little hole weren't strong enough to push out the pin (I broke a few jeweler's screwdrivers, and ruined several other tools trying) and things that would probably push the pin/plate out were to big to get into that hole! I eventually gave up and just swapped out bands from my old watch, which had pins that came out easier. The question is: What is that tool you used, and where can I get one. 🙂

  • @ansomeBob

    Superb video Greg, I just went out and bought one after seeing your review.
    The only improvement I would want is a "city" called UTC which didn't share the DST setting with the rest.
    I'm in the UK so my local setting is LON with DST (we call it BST) and I would like my world time to be UTC because I'm a space fan and all space activities are in UTC.
    You can't have your home zone as LON with DST and your world zone as LON with DST off.
    My way around this was to have my home zone as LON with DST, and my world (UTC) time as LIS with DST off. That seems to work :-)
    BTW, back when I was young, probably in the 70's or 80's, I built a radio-controlled clock, which we called a "Rugby Clock" because our 60khz transmitter was in Rugby. It had six large LEDs and was the centre of attention on New Year's Eve as we watched the year change.
    Rugby is about as far from our coastline as you can get but our time signal transmitter has been moved to the north of England now.

    I've had my Casio WV58A-1AV for 6 years and see no reason to call it an "entry level" watch unless that's your term for one costing less than $50. It is still running fine on the original "battery," which I believe (from viewing other videos here) to be a CR1620 Lithium cell.

    I have the WV-58U module 3053 very similar to the one on the left. It often resets the date and time to 1.1. 2005 1200. It appears to be something to do with auto receive so I leave it on manual receive and just press the bottom right button to manual receive.

    • @steve6375
      @steve6375 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I read somewhere that the resetting issue is due to bad contact with the battery. This usually occurs after you have changed the battery and the metal contact clip has been bent away from the battery because the metal is not very 'springy' and has been deformed. Just go in and bend the clip so it makes strong spring contact and it should be fixed.

    • @Rockywi

    isnt that wv58da the same watch as the WV-58RD-1AEF ? if not, whats the difference? they look same. is its hourly beep a single tone or a double tone ? what is the difference between "multiband 5" and " multiband 6" , does that multiband 5 not receive in europe ? these dont have mineralglas, but only plasticglas, with mineralglas and a solar modul it would be an alternative to the gshock square 5610. i like the screen segmentation of this watch and the fluent line between the watch and the strap like it was one piece. its a nice watch in all stainless steel, at least they could have given it a mineralglas, if not solar too, that would increase the value if this watch much.

    • @matof1428
      @matof1428 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The radio time signal from transmitters is controlled from the same source as Internet time or time signal in gsm network.

    • @okdoomer620
      @okdoomer620 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@matof1428 The difference is that the watches get the time in lightspeed while smartphones communicate over network packages, that are routed through a complex network of devices, losing time on every station. Both are accurate for practical purposes, but you can easily see the difference with the naked eye. My phone is about one second wrong (why so much?), an online time website I tried is better with less than half a second (400ms or something)

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ERR is short for “error”. That would normally mean there’s something causing reception problems. If you tap the lower, right button (without holding it down) it should tell you the last time that atomic time reception was successful. If it was just a few days ago then you’re probably okay. If it’s been a long time then you might want to experiment with ways to improve reception. The best thing is to leave it near a window overnight (and pick a window closest to Colorado) and away from anything electronic. If that doesn’t work then there are other things you could try.

      The only time I had to return a Casio watch was when I bought a brand new Wave Ceptor from Japan and it would ALWAYS have a reception error. I tried everything I could for several days. When I pressed the button to find out when it was last able to set itself there was just “- - - -“ on the display, meaning it never even set itself one time before I got it. I thought about keeping the watch since everything else worked and it was a good-looking watch, but I decided to return it because I knew that a Wave Ceptor that never sets itself would drive me nuts. A little while later I bought another one just like it, except it DOES work.

    Now, before I've decided to ask in the comment section, I want to let you know that I saw the entire video and read through the manual thoroughly that the watch came with and STILL did not find the answer to this one question I have.
    Okay.........let's say I have my "home" time set to CHI because.........well that's the time zone I live in.
    Okay........now, let's say that I have my "world time" set to TPE (you see it when the mode button is pressed first) and, let's just say that one day I decide to travel to THAT time zone.
    .........and, here's the question:
    What button pressing procedure do I perform so that, AFTER pressing the mode button and seeing the world time TPE, I can immediately set my home time to THAT particular time zone where it would then show the day, date, etc just like it did when it was still set on my previous home time WITHOUT having to manually set the time of that new time zone that I'm visiting?? 🤔
    I know it's kind of difficult to ask in plain words and easier if I could just show you in person. But I can't do that.
    So, If if anyone out there can understand exactly what I'm asking, please let me know of a possible solution.
    If you can't quite understand what I'm asking, please let me know where I'm losing you and I'll try to re phrase my asking method. Thanks.

      Right now, in late 2021, the metal version is at Amazon for $34 and the resin version is on eBay for about $28.

    Power save mode???

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This watch does now have a power save mode.

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This watch has a Demo mode. From the normal, timekeeping mode press and hold the light button and also the bottom, right button. After about 3 seconds it goes into demo mode, which alternates between the home time and world time display. This will also disable the atomic time receiver. This will save power. The watches are supposed to be in this mode when they are shipped and when they are on display at stores.

    is this watch really WR like i can swim with this watch.. i just got one and im not sure

      This watch is rated at 5 Bar or 50 Meter water resistance. You should be fine swimming but they don’t recommend deep swimming like snorkeling. Personally, I have never had trouble swimming with these Casio watches. But I don’t get any deeper than swimming pool depth. Here’s Casio’s official explanation of water resistance claims... www.casio-intl.com/asia/en/wat/water_resistance/

      Bottom line: I have never worried about it and there’s never been a problem.

      Here’s a story (including a TH-cam video link) about what happens when someone tests a G-Shock at many times beyond the rated water resistance. The key is that, within their test, the watch which was rated for 200 meters appeared to be perfectly fine at 400 meters. But then they kept going until it actually sustained damage. www.g-central.com/how-waterproof-is-a-g-shock-extreme-water-resistance-test/

      That’s not my experience with this model. Do you mind if I try to troubleshoot it with you? First, where are you and what time zone is the watch set to? When it sets itself to the wrong time, how far off is it?
