  • EDIT: Please see the following video for an in-depth review of the newer versions of this watch... • Casio MTG-M900 In-Dept...
In this video I offer a detailed review of a watch I've used for about seven years already. Included, I'll show you how to adjust the wrist band size by adding or removing links. Just a few additional details: The watch is water resistant to 200 meters (but I've never proven that myself). If you manually set the time but the "atomic clock" reception is set to "Auto," then it will override your manual setting whenever it's able to receive the atomic clock data. Finally, I wanted to be clear that, in all the years I've had this watch, it has never malfunctioned in any way!
Additional: I just found a great, in-depth video showing how to replace the battery of this watch (if you really need to do it). My hat is off to these people...
    • How to Change a CTL161...
...and, while I still intend to do another review featuring the watch I show at the very end of this video, I'm happy to recommend someone else's review of that watch here...

Hey, you made this vid in 2013, and it's 2022 now - but I wanted to thank you for making it. I recently let this watch sit in a drawer for several months, and upon finding it, wanted to start wearing it again. But it had reset to 1-1 of whatever year it resets to, and the manual was long gone! Thanks to your efforts (eight years ago!) I have my favorite watch up and running again!

Had mine for 10 years and still running strong and I wear it almost daily. I occasionally will lay it in a windowsill for a few hours. Not sure if that helps but with solar I'm sure it doesn't hurt. Casio builds awesome watches! This is my third!

I love this watch. I've had it for 4 years never a problem. not even the band. I only take it off to shower and sleep. I work in a factory so it gets beat a lot (even saved my wrist from some cuts-crushes). Works perfectly at water parks also. My wife had to convince me to buy such a expensive watch $125ish when I bought it. But it ended up being one of the best items I ever bought.

I have had this particular model for just over 20 years now as my daily wear watch and have not had to do a thing to it in that 20 year time . Worked perfectly, never had to touch a thing. The back light has just started to act up and recover indicator flashes when I try to use the back light. These are indicators the rechargeable cell is finally starting to fail after almost 21 years. I ordered a new CTL1616F rechargeable battery / capacitor NOTE NEVER touch the new cell with your fingers they are extremely sensitive to static shock damage and will ruin the cell. Use static safe plastic tweezers only to touch the cell. There are a few videos on here on how to replace the cell. Should be good to go for another 20 years. Also never let your charge run down too low. I keep min in a windowsill when not in use to keep the charge up this will go a long way in keeping you cell / watch going for a long time.

I bought this excellent watch at Costco about 7 years ago for unbelievable low price around $80. I work in very harsh dusty environment in construction. After many years of real abuse, watch is working so well. Unfortunately adjusting it without manual is very difficult. For that reason I am so thankful for that excellent video. Got same watch. Love it. Only problem, the plasic/rubber end caps that connect watch to bracelet break. I replaced them because it's the best watch. The reason it's best is easiest to read at night of the casio g-shocks. Other g-shocks are not as clear as this one. The time stamp feature is great for reference a security camera. When someone suspicious walks by house and I happen to notice I can do a timestamp and later on (usually too busy) review security cam to see if the guy did something. When security cam is 24hour recording I can trim down time it takes to find when he walked by instead of reviewing whole day. Great to catch people stealing.

I have had this very watch (yes, the old version) since right after it came out. I bought it January 2003. So 14 years now. It has seen heavy abuse through jobs (construction, remodeling, masonry, roofing, chimney sweep, hvac work). Has held up very well. Since recently spending 5+ months in the hospital, it suffered battery failure (reset to 2005 thingy). I have now reset it through use of this video, thank you BTW. We shall see how it holds up now. I have read that it will continue to reset itself to 2005 every once in awhile so we will have to see.

Thanks so much for this video! I got this watch today as a Father's Day gift and the band was big enough to fit an elephant, so your tutorial helped me remove four links - wasn't exactly a snap, but I got it done with no damage. I bought the newer model when it was on sale. Yes it's good and rugged. Small grips the link pins brake easily so buy extra's because (me being in Japan) it's about $9 to repair...you can buy a kit with a lot of pins and tools for about 11 to 13 bucks on amazon....it's worth it. Bought mine in 2015 and still going strong....except for broken pins. Broken pins aside I love the medal band it wont crack and brake and just like the watch it's self it's build like a tank. Great review! Best watch I've ever purchased!

Found this video while looking for instructions to resize bracelet. This bracelet whose intermediate pins that are SIMILAR to the clasp pin at the end was new to me (particularly because I've only ever removed intermediate pins by pushing them right through from the outside) . And although it seemed fairly obvious to me - simply because the pin was just not accessible from the outside, just because the watch is new, I wasn't too comfortable going ahead with what I thought I was supposed to do without reassuring myself that that's exactly what I was supposed to do. So that's how I made use of this video.
P.S- I usually took it to the local jeweler for resizings but I've watched jewelers fumble with it as well before I figured - I was probably better off reassuring myself first and doing it by myself

Hey!!! Thanks so much for the review!!!! I got one of these watches about 4yrs ago from my mother for my birthday. Yesterday, I had to get the battery in it changed because it was getting to the point that it wouldn't keep a charge....once the battery was changed it took FOREVER for me to figure out how to set the time on it. I usually have to do it manually because I live in an area where it's hard to get good radio reception, plus I have A LOT of electrical devices going like laptops and other things....those probably hinder radio signals as well. I couldn't figure out how to set it until I found your video.

I've read comments about this watch complaining that it's heavy. Certainly, it's larger and weighs more than your average watch but, to me, it's not bulky enough to be a deal-breaker.

I bought mine in 2002, I believe. It died twice, once about 10 years ago and then again yesterday. My experience told me to get a new battery for about $15 - $20 bucks. As you can see, a battery lasts for about 10 years. It takes about 20 - 30 minutes to replace it. It is well worth your time and money to keep this watch running. It is my one and only watch, so it has been through everything. I really hardly ever remove it for any reason. It is waterproof to 300 feet, and yes, I have used it for scuba diving when I didn't have my diving watch with me. The only difference is that mine is black.

Great watch! Purchased the original 2638 MTG -900 G-Shock watch in the 2003 time-frame at Sam’s Club for around $95 and never had a problem with it other than replacing the battery in 2016. I selected this watch due to the fact that I ride motorcycles, which are notorious for damaging watches due to vibration. Another reason I purchased this watch was that I was traveling a great deal domestically and globally at the time, it allowed me to easily keep track of local and home time. I have other watches I consider jewelry more than watches, some of which cost over thousand dollars, but I must say this is my everyday go to watch.

I can confirm about the long term ruggedness of this watch - over 7 years of hard use in the oil field - mine had been run over several times by my suburban - by the 55 ton kenworth and trailer I drive - as well as being thrown down a well and fished out and has always survived. Mine looked far more used than yours - but the crystal remained looking brand new through it all. I finally lost my watch when TSA decided to search my luggage and remove it for me. They deny my watch was there - but I'm certain I'll see it for sale by them on ebay eventually. I loved this watch and am already looking to replace it with the same model.

Great video... I still have mine... Got it in a Las Vegas Walmart for $150 in 2005 im on my 12th year (2017). Reason I liked it was it somehow nerdy, sporty, classy looking all at once. Anything your wearing from workout gear to a 3 Piece Suit it works.
I call it my digital Rolex :)
only complaint is pin came loose over and over and it came off my wrist outside and I lost it somewhere... Id grown so used to it I felt off balance when missing. Luckily the person who found it posted it on ebay and nobody but me was interested and got it back for $20 I guess thats not terrible for a finders fee.

I, too, love my G-Shock, a GW300. It has the exact same features as yours. Just sharing my experience: I had to replace the battery once. Unfortunately, "solar" does not mean battery free. The watch runs on a rechargeable battery, which would eventually die. And it is a few dollars more than the regular lithium button battery. Another thing I have noticed is that the crystal has held up very well. Mine is still scratch free so far. I suspect the ring around it really gives it extra protection.

This is an excellent video. Thank you so much. This watch was my first G-Shock that I received as a gift over a decade ago. It's (probably due to sentiment) my favorite. I haven't been able to wear it for a couple years because of one of the plastic/polyurethane ends, from the face to the band, failing. Finally a replacement was ordered, and it couldn't have been completed without this entry. Again, thank you.

Thanks for review. It made me change to the newer version as I too did not think the time memo was very useful. I bought this to fit the need of a semi-dress digital watch that displayed accurate time. I had to remove several links and your demonstration was perfect. After wearing a stainless automatic watch, this thing not heavy at all. Nice knowing with the auto time and auto daylight savings features you set it once and never have to worry about it again. I bought mine ship to store from Walmart and am very pleased. About the only thing I would change and would pay more for it would be to remove the resin pieces on the band and face to make it all metal.

Thought I'd add my experience with the Waveceptor watch. I bought it about 7 years ago thinking that it will be the end all to watch purchases. I loved the watch but over the years I had some issues. On one occasion the watch pin wore through the plastic retainer and I had not noticed that the watch had fallen off my wrist . Luckily I was able to retrace my foot steps and recover the watch. The repair was not expensive or difficult. Currently , the watch has not been charging fully even after letting it sit in the sun for several hours forcing me to reset it . I thought about getting the battery replaced but it would probably cost me almost as much as a new watch. I therefore decided to try an automatic watch.

I've had mine for about 10 years. I got it by accident.
A few years earlier I bought a cheaper Waveceptor from Wal-Mart (the Waveceptor feature never worked). The battery went dead. I took it back for a new battery and the lady didn't know how to install a battery. She kept shorting it out when she replaced the back panel. Eventually she gave up, and told me to grab one that was similar. I found an MT-G and said it looked close enough. She agreed and ringed me up. That's when I saw it was a 95 dollar watch, but with a zero balance. I told her I only paid about 35 for my old one. She was trying to leave and didn't care.
I even said, I came in with a dead battery. Should I at least pay for the battery? Nope, she was gone.
Free upgrade, best watch I ever had.

I was looking at this watch as a gift for guys. This looks like a really good work/beater watch, with the exception that maybe it's heavy and it lacks a 24hr timer and a year display. My PAW-1500 has all these features and more, and this watch has all the features that are most important in real world usage.. in this order: SOLAR/ATOMIC/AUTO-EL. The rest are kind of frivolous but fun. I would probably get bored with the MTG-900 and tired of it being heavy, but I'm thinking for a dude that works construction or is really abusive with watches, this might be the watch them.

Mam wcześniejszy model od kilkunastu lat. Po wielu latach wymieniłem baterie. Miałem kilka zegarków "radio control" po wymianie baterii do śmieci. Ten działa bez zarzutów. Uważam go za najlepszy zegarek ze wszystkich jakie miałem. . Lepiej kupić raz dobry zegarek niż co chwila nowy, w sumie na to samo wychodzi lub drożej. Jedyna wada to schodzący chrom z plastykowych elementów. Szkoda że nie ma złotej wersji. Polecam po mimo że bardzo podrożały. (~3x)

Hi Greg ! I just bought the same watch from Casio America about a week ago and I noticed that the solar charging indicator is on medium (M). I tried changing it under the sun for about 2-3 hours to no avail. Is it normal for this watch to get stuck on medium or is there something wrong with the watch??

5:48 - What a pity that this feature (Time Memo) is only present in a few Casio models. If my GW‑M5610U had this feature, it would make my GW‑9400 (Rangeman) almost unnecessary. I just have some complaints about the Rangeman, and unfortunately I haven't heard anything about its successor yet. I wonder if this ancient MTG‑900 model has been updated? And what other models have this Time Memo feature.

I thinking what could be the use of a time memo and the only thing I can think of is to record punching in and out at work to keep a personal record of your work day. Other than that I don’t known how to better use it.
