@@MoempfLP yes, and "de huur is hoog" so there is another differance. "de huur is duur" is not common Dutch
Hoersubsidue is even more infamous....
I've made this mistake when talking to my wife's (female) cousin.
I meant to say "uitslapen" (slept in late) but said "inslapen" (put to sleep like an animal at a shelter) - good times!
We say "aanrijden" and mean leaving from home with your bike or car. But the Dutch from up North were scared because they think of the real meaning of getting hit by a car. Doesn't help when I don't respond back haha
It was the opposite for us; when we were dating, my husband would tell me in English that he “slept out” this weekend, and I’d be like, “Oh really, where? Hmmm??”
A former colleague once went into a greengrocer to buy a punnet of strawberries, but in stead of saying aardbei she asked for aambeien (haemorrhoids). The grocer could barely stand up he was laughing so much

My ex girlfriend once walked into the bakery, and asked me if she could get the bread. So I told her what to say "mag ik een gesneden bruin brood" which means "may i have a brown sliced bread". But instead she asked the baker "mag ik een bruin besneden brood" which means "may I have a brown circumsized bread". Needless to say the baker was laughing.
Once I embarrassed myself by saying “Ik slaap in de badkamer” I said badkamer because phonetically it sounded way too similar to “bed-room” or “bed-kamer”
we would actually call that a 'sleep-room'
'slaapkamer'

With hot weather it isn't a surprise dat je in de badkamer wilt slapen.

When that guy started about 'huren' and 'hoeren', I was like: "Not again..." 🤦♂️
"Ik woon in een hoerenhuis en de hoer is duur." 😂😂😂
I also once had an Austrian friend, who was into internet-language and said; 'LUL!' (like LOL) a lot.
She went into a Nijntje-shop with childrens-toys, saw a toothbrush and yelled; 'LUL LUL LUL LUL!'
I dragged her outside and said; 'Ssssshhtt! What are you doing, not in front of the children! That words means penis!'
I meant to say " huurcommosie" at the police station ( don't ask. My landlord tried to push me down the stairs) and I said hoercommisie" and the cop slammed the door shut because he thought I was talking about human trafficking.

Omg I'm sorry but that is really really funny haha. I can imagine the cop on his break explaining it to his colleagues haha his colleagues must've laughed at him. And may your former landlord fall down the stairs.

AFTREKVERSCHIJNSELEN:
I wanted to convince someone to have a beer with me. he refused because he had already had many drinks the past weekends at weddings and such. my argument was that he needed to have a beer with me anyway because otherwise he might get withdrawal symptoms. it's "ontwenningsverschijnselen" or "afkickverschijnselen" in Dutch. to draw=to pull= trekken, so instead of afkickverschijnselen I mentioned "aftrekverschijnselen". this literally translates to wanking symptoms. at a physics conference ..
One more situation: I was studying architecture and I said that I have a gold stairs 🤦♀️ The difference between "g" and "h" was very difficult in Flemish. So I said "goude trap" instead of "hout" 😅
People told me that I need to be very rich person 😂
"huursubsidie" is also a classic dutch trap for foreigners ;)
(subsidized rent which often gets pronounced as subsidized hookers)
I am Dutch but I've been in Germany and I usually confuse schön and schon.
Schon means 'already' and Schön means pretty. I often hastily go; 'Oh oh, yes, already! Already the buildings!'
And then later I realize my mistake, on my way home.
I also, very often (as I think many other Dutch people do) add the word "hoor" (sounds like 'whore') into English conversations, with surprisingly bad results xD

The dutch are always impressed when you speak the language even if you make a lot of mistakes, its a hard language to learn and most of the time we are happy to help and teach the words
Even Google doesn't understand Dutch now and then, so it's okay. Once I Googled my company name "Fietsvriend" and Google asked: "Did you mean: sex friend? Bedoelde u: seksvriend? Welcome in Lol-land :-)

Yeah, i'm not the only one who can't pronounce "ui" i literally had a friend training with me for over an hour and i still just can't do it. I can say "uil" just fine and even as a german i had zero problems with "Scheveningen" buit "ui" that is a whole different story. I kinda sound like i am choking on something and that Is also the look that i get from people: plain and simple worry for my health ... glad i'm not the only one facing this
But the weirdest situation EVER was during my language course: none of the german Students in my class spoke even a word of dutch before. From day one everything was in dutch. The teacher was super nice and usually we could all laugh about misunderstandings. But this one time one person had a listening task and later on had to explain it to the other person who didn't listen to it. My partner did a great job explaining her listening task, which was about history. Up until the point where she said "ah and they kept repeating something about an "oorlog" (war), but i don't really get how that Is important" (ohrloch, litterally pronounced the same is a german word for an ear piercing) and the teacher was next to us staring at us like he was questioning humankind and we were really confused. He even asked us about it, but we said we didn't Know about any important "oorlog". We tried to translate it, but had a typo. So we didn't find out until we were at home. I felt majorly sorry for making my teacher believe we get brainwashed in german schools. Next day we could explain it, but that was a really uncomfortable situation... and one mistake i will definitely never make again. So i try to tell this story to every german so they don't scare the hell out of their poor language teachers.
German here. I made seal sounds for 5 minutes so a VERY exaggerated "ui" and now it works. My problem is still the "gr"
TeylaDex can you teach me the seal sounds? I can get the gr most of the time 🤣🤣🤣 but that ‘ui’ 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️

A friend and I had a trip to Netherlands planned for this April (what could possibly go wrong?) We live in the Canary Islands and speak Spanish. At one point I was suggesting as a joke that we could make money on the way around by singing and dancing. But somehow I used the Dutch verb (zingen) and conjugated it as if it was the Spanish verb (cantar). As all the Spanish speakers will know, "zingando" does not mean singing, which explained her husband´s shocked facial expression.
When our family migrated to australia in 1972 , anyway mum had a few problems with her english , she wanted to buy a bed or something like that, she asked the shopasistant for a ledikant , that did not go over well .
Hoi Bart, Ik heb veel filmpjes van je gezien. Je maakt leuke filmpjes. Een gereedschapfabriek had vroeger een reclameleus waarvan ik denk dat je er wat leuks mee kan doen. Nooit zagen wij zagen zo goed zagen dan wij onze zagen zagen zagen.

I can completely understand the American guy missing by exactly the hour though :') We say "Half 5" and mean 16:30, while in America they'd say "Half past 5" sometimes also "Half 5" for short (that might be the UK mainly but it happens in English anyway) and they'd mean 17:30. So yea when we say half 5 to Americans or English they might just show up an hour late :') I always have the habit of confirming my appointments on a 24-hour clock for this exact reason because I speak English so much on the internet I get confused too sometimes. They'd say half 5 and I'd confirm it as 16:30 and if they say yes we both know what's going on and I write it down xD Also does help a lot in English for Europeans that aren't used to the am/pm clock since you immediately eradicate any confusion about morning and evening as well so you won't show up 12 hours early/late either anymore :p
"Half 5" is very illegal English, personally never heard it.
@@jeremiahn.2718 Yea not saying it's proper grammar. But sometimes people (especially brits :') ) are too lazy to speak a full phrase so they leave out words that should speak for themselves. The 'past' in "half past 5" was one I particularly noticed when I heard it because where I live that's an hour earlier than he meant it.
As a Canadian, I had never heard "half 5" as a time until I started learning Dutch. Unfortunately at the same time a British flatmate moved in, and she had a completely different meaning of "half 5". So for a long time I could remember that the two countries had opposite meanings, but I couldn't remember which country did it which way.
Ik spreek redelijk goed Nederlands, maar Ik Ben zo bang om fouten te maken .... op dit moment Ben Ik meer Nederlands praten met mijn vrouw en ook een werk colleague...... komt goed 😃

They still let me in.
I went to a bakery once and instead of saying ik wil graag een kip borek I said ik will graag een kip broek (which means trousers). Lol. I realized my mistake but the ladies working there thought it's fun to roll their eyes at me and make fun of me. I mean yeah I get it I made a mistake and we could have laughed about it together instead of making me feel miserable about it. Most of the people appreciate the effort of you trying to speak dutch but you will bump into bullies like them sometimes.
That's not very nice. I obviously would've laughed about that mistake for a bit, but that was going too far.
We all come across that in the early stages, it's better if they can laugh along with you but not everybody sees it that way.
@@MLWJ1993 I wouldn't mind laughing about it together but what they did was disgusting. I felt so embarrassed that day. I'm not stepping into that place ever again.

when I asked my friend which beach we were heading to, he said "Duindorp", but I misheard it as "Donder op".
Needless to say I was surprised a town would have such a name, even if there are some rather strange town names in Nederland (Best, Dorp, Hell, etc)

Yes, it does. While 'Heb je zin in X' means 'Do you want to do X / Are you excited about X', if you say 'Heb je zin' without anything after it then it means ~'Are you aroused'
It could mean something sexual but not all the time.

Wat irritant! Ik weet her niet waarom iedereen op straat spreekt Englels tegen mij. Ik ben in Neerlandistiek afgestudeerd, ik spreek heel goed Nederlands, niet perfect maar heel goed. Ik kan alles begrijpen en alles zeggen maar ik ben niet altijd correct. Ik voer zakkelijke gesprekken in het Nederlands. Maar in prive leven spreken mensen altijd Engels tegen mij. Ik snap het niet. Ik denk dat ze probeeren mij te laten zien dat ik niet mag aanpassen. Nederlandse taal alleen maar voor Nederlanders. Je mag geen Nederlands spreken als je een buitenlander bent. Dat heb ik helaas een paar keer gehoord :( ik wil hier niet meet blijven! Ik wil misschien maar Frankrijk of Italië waar je een echte kans krijgt om aan te passen.
Het heeft een paar historische redenen: klein land, veel export, veel handel. Veel Engels op de televisiekanalen (films, BBC, vertaalde documentaires). Een hang naar Angelsaksische cultuur, populair (willen) zijn op school als je "slang" Amerikaanse of Engelse woorden spreekt, enz. Op school zeiden de leraren tegen ons: "Hoe beter Engels je leert, hoe beter voor de internationale handel. Oefenen, oefenen, oefenen!"
Blijkbaar spreek je wel nederlands, maar snap je de mensen toch nog niet helemaal. Gezien de meeste Nederlanders Engels spreken zijn ze snel bereid om over te schakelen naar een taal waarvan ze denken dat het makkelijker is voor de gesprekspartner. Dit is niet bedoeld om te voorkomen dat anderen Nederlands praten, maar om de ander zich meer op z'n gemak te laten voelen.
Als daar dan bij komt dat jouw Nederlands niet perfect is, zullen mensen snel denken dat het misschien makkelijker voor je is om over te schakelen naar Engels.
Dat is uiteraard niet wat jij wil, maar het is niet om je buiten te sluiten, maar juist als een goed gebaar bedoeld.
Maar als je perse vind dat we allemaal zo onbeleefd zijn dat je gaat roepen dat je liever ergens anders bent: Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Jij hebt gelijk, binnen 1 maand alles is veranderd. Ik werk nu in een Nederlandse werkomgeving en niemand spreekt Engels.

@@ThirstyTunaTaco I really wish to be able to travel as you thought. But the reality is that Dutch looks like to be more easy than Russian. At least the alphabet is the same as in my native language. But I will keep complaining though... 🤭 Learn Dutch is awesome but it is a little bit difficult for me.
