And, at the moment of posting this video, the Dutch need it!

Ik toevallig wel. Er woonde iemand bij in de buurt die een slijper van messen, scharen etc was en ook schaatsen.
Laat me raden deze video lag al een jaar of 2 op de plank, wachtend op schaatsweer. :)
Ahhhh, so much fun! The second I saw it I knew it, although I never had one of my own. A friend of mine had one and I saw him use it a few times. But the cluelessness of the expats... hilarious! "You have to think like the Dutch" (very serious, you can hear the brain cogs grinding). A moment later, "but I am not a Dutch person" (almost on the brink of despair). Fun! 😄

We sure do need it now... if you are a dedicated skater.. you sharpen your own skates.. (I even had a colleague who BUILT his own skates)
Although I did figure it out before the students, I have to say I've never seen one of these in my life.
And neither do we need these devices now. Heavy snowfall and wind is not what you need when you want a smooth ice surface.
Herkende het gelijk ,maar waarschijnlijk ook enkel omdat een maatje van me vroeger wedstrijden schaatste en ik hem regelmatig z'n schaatsen heb zien slijpen.
Zelf heb ik ijshockey schaatsen dus breng ze gewoon weg om machinaal te laten slijpen.
I don't think I have ever seen that first object (skate sharpener) but I knew what is was immediately.

I'm Dutch and it took me a minute to realise what it was. Never sharpened my own skates but have seen it.
The internal pain when you see people ruining those blades... Foreigners will never get that feeling but it hurts deeeeep.

In heel Nederland. Vroeger had je messen slijpers en die deden ook schaatsen en meer natuurlijk.
No. I'm a zeeuw and I have one too. And my dad used to have one too. But my kids also didn't know what it was because the winters have been pretty mild since they were born..
So I guess younger people don't know what this is.
I knew what this was, but only BC I was a part of a student ice skating association

Ah that takes me back to when I was just a small kid and my dad took me to a shop to sharpen my skates and then they let me do it myself.
I'm 100% Dutch and had absolutely no clue what it was. Never seen it before. Doubt seriously I will ever see it ever in the future again. Maybe it's because I was born and grew up in Limburg and live since 2 decades in Nijmegen. No canals in both and ice skating is not THAT popular in both.

Ik ben een rasechte Nederlander maar kende het ook niet...
Voor de meeste mensen is dit natuurlijk apart ook al ben je van nederland maar op de boeren gebieden jaaaaa ik ben ook maar polder scum is dit heel normaal alleen die mijn opa/vader gebruikt is de zelfde contraptie maar dan in het hout heel apart zelfde idee maar als der geen tijd is en der moet snel geschaatst worden, worden ze geslepen aan de oude draaisteen/molensteen.

Bart is clearly better at Dutch than at sharpening skates. He did it all wrong with the scraper. He was treating them as figure skates, I think. But they are Norwegians skates..

Dutchy here and recognized it immediately. Never used it myself, but have seen it being used by Dutch top skaters in an interview somewhere

I was so cluelessssss (and I'm Dutch) but at least I did figure it out before they did, haha. one particular season of the year... yeah that definitely gave it away, haha.

My father had such a device so I knew, he sharpened his own skates and ours of course. But now I just bring my skates to the skate store.
Yes they do it with a machine now, it's fast and precise.
@@Brozius2512 no way, competitive speed skaters only use a machine for the rounding (ronding). The vast majority still uses something like this for regular sharpening.

I got it after Bart mentioned the clues that dutch people are crazy about it, that is available in one season, and because of the global warming, every year you have it less and less. At first, I thought of something even more specific: "Elfstedentocht" :D I am proud of knowing a bit of the dutch culture! :)

For those who want to get an impression of Dutch skating fever search YT for "Als het kan dan moet het..." (if it's possible we must...). Appearently I'm not allowed place the link. I'm afraid it's not subtitled but the shots and the sounds of the ice are amazing.
Nou, het duurde bij mij ook twee en een halve minuut voordat ik het in kon schatten. Took me 2 and a half minutes to get it. But the answers given by the expats were rather close to the truth and in any case show their knowledge of Dutch culture.

Well because of global warming you can hardly ice skate anymore and most people will bring theirs to a shop to sharpen. I stopped ice skating when I was a kid because I didn’t enjoy it, especially on ‘houtjes’, ask Bart about it...

I have one in my basement... Wow, your answers were almost worrying me but then I thought, how important is it really?
My grandfather had a wooden version of this which my father now has, I bought myself a metal one years ago.
But a lot of people don't skate anymore, or are still waiting for natural ice. Or they skate and have everything done. And this device only works for racing skates (noren), because hockey and figure skates have very different blades.
