  • The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid-yes, the hybrid-is the most fun RAV4 you can buy.
Shop for the 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on CarGurus: cargur.us/w6VCt
Gone are the days of egg-shaped RAV4s. Gone are the smooth curves and gentle lines. The new RAV4 means business. This is family-friendly crossover looks more like an off-road-ready 4Runner than an entry into the carpool club. And, amazingly, opting for the hybrid version of this storied model doesn’t dilute the car’s attitude. It just makes it better.
The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine in the RAV4 Hybrid operates on an Atkinson cycle-not something typically synonymous with performance-but its dual electric motors and 1.6-kilowatt battery work with the I4 to deliver 219 horsepower. With electronically varying torque, the RAV4 Hybrid is quick off the line, quiet on the highway, and impressively fuel-efficient. Expect up to 41 miles per gallon city, 38 highway, and 40 combined.
Space is impressive, too. The RAV4 Hybrid doesn’t cede cargo space, providing 37.5 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 70 cubes when that seat is folded. Toyota’s tech offering still pushes Entune 3.0, although Apple CarPlay is finally available, and as standard equipment. Unfortunately, Android Auto still does not run on this infotainment system.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard, featuring forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and other advanced safety features. Pricing is reasonable, too. $27,850 plus a $1,095 destination fee will buy you a base-spec RAV4 Hybrid. The top-tier trim comes in at $35,850, and CarGurus’ Recommended Trim-the cool-looking XSE-costs $35,320 when equipped with the XSE Cold Weather Package.

Cars are certainly becoming more fuel efficient, but there is no gas only car that is equivalent in size and is able to match the hybrid RAV4s fuel economy. There's lots of things you can do to get better mileage (such as hypermiling), but any car can do that, and that's why some Prius owners can get over 100 mpg. Toyota remains one of few automakers to do hybrids and their hybrid reliability is exceptional.

Great review, Clifford! I really like what Toyota has done to the RAV4, but is it true that there’s no mechanical connection powering the rear tires, it’s strictly electric power? Since this is only a hybrid and not a PHEV, it’s easy to run down the small battery while driving up to the ski slopes and only be left with front wheel drive?
Subaru has kept their drive shaft on their new hybrid model, because they never wanted to loose their all wheel drive.

    • @Thissandthat
      @Thissandthat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

yes it is true that there's only a wire connection to the rear axle in electric motor, but even if the battery is depleted, the power split device with its electric generator can power the electric motor in the rear on demand.

If you would be a ten percenter (only use the truck for its intended purpose ten percent or less of the time) then I think this is a great alternative over a truck. And depending on the truck you get, you'll probably spend more on the overall price tag of a new truck, along with more on gas. And don't buy something, especially something that will put you years into debt, just because everyone else is doing it.

I have had my 2019 RAV4 XLE Hybrid for almost 2 weeks now. Sadly it has not been an Exactly happy experience.
Oh don’t get me wrong in general it is a good car, BUT.
Toyota does not make it easy to either decide on which model and options to get OR to understand EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE GETTING.
There are about 11 different models with several option packages, even trying to decipher if you get a GPS Navigation System IS NOT EASY.
Does Scout GPS Link sound like a GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM? WELL IT IS NOT.
I am STILL trying to understand it, what I do know is that WITHOUT A SMARTPHONE AND A HEALTHY DATA PLAN THERE IS NO NAVIGATION.
THIS WAS UNBELIEVABLY CONFUSING AND THE DEALERSHIP SEEMED EVEN MORE CONFUSED THAN ME.
The driver instrument display is less than DESIRABLE, I am talking about the instrument display in front of the driver, NOT the large centrally mounted display. In bright sunlight the display is almost IMPOSSIBLE TO READ, it seems to be DIM and in shadow even with the illumination turned right up.
It is necessary to REALLY CONCENTRATE on the display BUT THIS TAKES FAR TO MUCH TIME AND IS DISTRACTING TO THE DRIVER.
When I returned home and drove into the garage the display was VERY BRIGHT AND READABLE, so I suppose that if I confine my driving to TOURING my garage I should have no problems.
There many other annoyances that I am not happy with.
For instance, the START BUTTON, when the steering wheel is in the straight ahead position the horizontal spoke of the steering wheel make the button INVISIBLE.
A small ANNOYANCE but DIDN’T THE DESIGN ENGINEER ACTUALLY SIT IN THE DRIVERS SEAT AND SAY “WHOOPS WHERE IS THE START BUTTON”?
On a lighter note, I have driven about 200 miles and the average MPG has risen from 18 MPG to about 35 MPG, and is still rising, VERY GOOD.
The Cruise Control that ensures that you follow other cars safely is TERRIFIC, I was following another car at 70 MPH when the car slowed to take an exit ramp. My car slowed AUTOMATICALLY until the car ahead moved off to the right then my car accelerated AUTOMATICALLY back to 70 MPH, WOW.
However the Steering Assist feature is STRANGE, it seems as if you are constantly FIGHTING IT.
I am unsure about the RAV, right now I sort of wish I had spent the extra 8 to 10k on a new Acura RDX.
I traded in a 2013 RDX with 48k miles on it, it was a terrific car, so WHY trade it? The short answer is BECAUSE I COULD.
