It makes sense. So even the oversell is just another stolen piece of the puzzle I bet.

I used to watch and laugh at Mind of Mencia, and I even watched that stand up special, No Strings Attached and I laughed, sure. It wasn't until so much later with the explosion of TH-cam where you can just watch endless compilations of everything that someone has ever done, that it becomes painfully obvious that he absolutely does steal jokes. He does have a fair amount of original content though, although, I would assume he had writers for that.

What's funny is he wasn't alone. Most of them did or do it. Joe Rogan is the one comic that pointed this out. He points out examples of Robin Williams doing it. There're many more examples. Denis Leary, Amy Schumer. Rogan highlighted something shitty that has been going on for a while.

If a comedian were to do this with jokes and preface it with "I heard a great Bill Cosby joke once...", people in the audience would think "why does this guy do nothing but quote other jokes?" People go to see a comedian because they want to experience THAT person's stories and insights and observations. If you are a comedian who isn't very good at coming up with material, you either face the choice of giving up comedy or doing what this guy does.

I have to admit back when I was 20 I was in denial that Carlos was stealing jokes but now that I’m 36…it’s so painfully obvious.
I used to watch and laugh at Mind of Mencia, and I even watched that stand up special, No Strings Attached and I laughed, sure. It wasn't until so much later with the explosion of TH-cam where you can just watch endless compilations of everything that someone has ever done, that it becomes painfully obvious that he absolutely does steal jokes. He does have a fair amount of original content though, although, I would assume he had writers for that.

My admiration for Joe Rogan has grown over the years, especially concerning the topic of joke stealing. Rogan would probably be the first to admit no one's comparing him to Carlin or Pryor, but he performs his own shit. He doesn't steal. And he also makes a great point when Mencia defenders say "Everybody steals." Rogan says no one is running around saying Chris Rock steals or Kevin Hart steals or Eddie Murphy stole.

If a comedian were to do this with jokes and preface it with "I heard a great Bill Cosby joke once...", people in the audience would think "why does this guy do nothing but quote other jokes?" People go to see a comedian because they want to experience THAT person's stories and insights and observations. If you are a comedian who isn't very good at coming up with material, you either face the choice of giving up comedy or doing what this guy does.
