It’s honestly just shameful that this woman thinks she can claim to have been injured and gotten cancer from a “heroic sacrifice” she never made, and still get away with it. Some people’s kids.
Stolen Valor is terrible but this is also incredibly fascinating. That a person is capable of just full on putting on an act like this is psychologically bizarre.
I'm a civilian and that crooked wrist just looked off. Especially for someone claiming to be a Marine, and those folks always look pretty squared away.

It's sad that some people have to invent alternate lives to get attention for things they never did.
The most surprising thing of all is that she was performing this "Combat Veteran" charade in her own backyard, where she grew up. She was even the local VFW commander? Someone in that community had to know that she never spent one day in the military! Beyond that, this woman has a family. I simply can't believe that no one was aware that she was pulling this despicable stunt.
This highlights the need for Americans to become more engaged with true veterans, family members, old friends, new friends as was once part of American culture. One thing that's not American is social distancing which merely encourages more con artists to ply their dispicable trade.
@@choreomaniac Actually, she received a MSW degree and was employed by the VA, in Providence, as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She was working as a professional? That is how she was able to obtain a real Marine's DD214 information.
For those that aren’t aware. The paperwork she used and forged to legitimize her service were taken from various real veterans and active service members including DD-214s. Hence why she was charged with identity theft.

Not only did this woman commit stolen valor, she committed fraud for her own personal gain. She lied about having cancer, which in itself is a slap in the face of people who actually have cancer. Yeah, that "for actions in Afghanistan" immediately stood out to me. A purple heart isn't awarded for actions, and no one that legitimately received a purple heart would ever phrase it like that.
That one got me as well. All it takes to get a purple heart is to get hurt in combat. It's something that happens to many soldiers who experience combat. You don't see people going around bragging about how great they were at there fast food job, because they burned themselves on the grill. There's no shame in getting a purple heart, but its not something to brag about, and hype up like it's some kind of achievement. If I served in the military, and got a purple heart, I would probably be very bitter about it. I'm bitter about all work related injuries I received in my life.
Time for talking is over!! There's only one course of action & justice for people like her..... Get a rope!! And remember, it doesn't end till them legs stop kicking.
It’s really frustrating that someone would do that, that’s disrespectful to marines who risked their lives in a daily basis and deserve those medals and achievements.
Yeah…. my new roommate claims he served in the military. But he applied for a job and failed his background check. Apparently his high school has no record of him even graduating. He supposedly has a HS diploma though? Forged?? Now I don’t even know if he even served in the military…
her medals were wrong. the ira medal had no stars. 1 deployment to iraq/afghanistan = 1 medal and 1 star. 2 deployments is 2 stars. you get a star for each deployment/campaign

My grandpa ACTUALLY got a Purple Heart from the Storm of Normandy... His story of that day is... heartbreaking and terrifying. It's a slap in the face to every soldier's sacrifice... Edit: a word
I had a grandpa who served in Vietnam as a nurse, (he quickly had to serve on the front lines after recruitment) and he was injured from a shot to the foot. @@zaithehedgewolf4587 there isn't a definitive answer to that but the most terrifying war is arguably WW1. Vietnam was a tough war but it's exaggerated to say it was the bloodiest. It was more terrifying being a Vietcong than an American/Allied troop.

Being a vet and deployed, there’s a lot that goes on with stress and other things we see. I didn’t receive a Purple Heart or other high ranking medals but for someone to do this is too much. On top of that she received donations for falsified claims. What a shame! Hope everyone has a good Memorial weekend.

I do know that the military is not for everyone and that you may not have been able to serve for a variety of reasons, but if you still can serve your country in many other ways like volunteering at the VA, sending care packages to deployed service members, help rase funds for the USO, etc. You can serve your country in many ways but pretending to be something you're not is disgraceful and stealing money from the veteran's is criminal and I would be fine with her being held accountable as any other Marine would be, since she wants to be one. Both of my grandparents received purple hearts in WWII. One fought in the Aleutian Islands and the other in Okinawa. They were only in their teens and went through literal hell. This is disgusting.
My grandfather fought in Okinawa. He said the people there were wonderful and interesting. When the worst terrorist attack in history happened my grandmother had no idea where in Japan my grandfather was and didn't know if he survived. My poor young mom was worried sick too. It took many weeks before they found out he survived. The pain they must have suffered worrying must have been terrible. I know how it feels to wait 8 days and that was torture enough. My heart goes out to everyone who suffered in war. On all sides. We must find more civilized solutions. No one should be a pawn.
I can't stand people who go around pretend to be soldiers, or vets who claim to have served. Our soldiers and vets have rightly EARNED those distinguished titles!
In my opinion it is okay to pretend to be a combat vet so long as you don't use that to gain money or access that you normally wouldn't. If you want to dress up as a soldier and wear all sorts of medals, then so be it.
My jaw just dropped when they said there is no record she even served in the Marines. I thought she lied about the medals, but she made up the whole thing? Omg she is nuts.
How so? A real, honorable veteran would never lie about his service or awards. A real, honorable veteran would never buy medals online and flaunt them as legit. If a person is busted for fake medals, you can guarantee she or he is also lying about ever serving.
I cannot describe the depths in which I hate the people who do this. My grandfather fought 2 wars and worked in intelligence for desert storm. He died at 56 from a dissecting aortic aneurysm. Probably from holding in all the trauma he went through. He no doubt killed people he didn't want to and saw his friends slaughtered along the way. This should be a federal crime. As much as impersonating a police officer.

In the lead in to the story, I just sat shaking my head. Memorial day is not about honoring those who served, or those who received medals for heroism. It's about remembering and honoring those who gave their life in the service of their nation. Veteran's Day is set aside to honor living veterans.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about people with Purple Hearts, it’s that most of the time, they don’t volunteer that information quickly and openly. Because it is typically associated with one of the worst days of their lives. I spent a lot of time with my dad at the VFW, he was a navy vet, and the post commander and I liked talking to a lot of the guys there. The ones with Purple Hearts I usually found out about from others who would just mention the guys in the post who were wounded in action. Very few of the Purple Heart recipients ever wanted to talk about it. They weren’t so much “proud” of it, but haunted by it. Many come close to dying, and they don’t just run around yapping about that afterwards. It’s extremely traumatizing. The only time I EVER saw most of the Purple Hearts talk about it, it was during very emotional speeches during military holiday functions the VFW put on for them and the public.

As a Marine veteran who did two tours in Iraq, this is disgusting what she did and I hope she spends years in prison for her disgraceful actions.
