Bring awareness to people about veterans. PLEASE 22 VET KILL THEMSELVES EVERY DAY. They don't feel like anyone give a dam what they did. @Dave Chappelle He got an honorable discharge. A 15 year appeal process is ridiculous. Especially considering the photos with spent shell casings in Iraq, with smoke coming out of Saddam Hussein's sons' home. I don't know how much closer to a smoking gun one can get. The fact that his entire unit didn't get their medals for 15 years makes me question what makes the Army this far out of touch with reality. What was the Army smoking?
I have met in Mexico a USMC veteran of the Iraq war with PTSD that couldn't get help, because he was afraid of abuse for seeking help and loss of income from reserves. I gave him the card of a psychiatrist in Mexico who I knew is a good and compassionate person, told him he could pay in cash, and there'd be no records in the USA.
It really isn't fair for the US military to use people to kill and be killed and punish them if their mind is shattered as a result.
Just because you don't get PTSD doesn't mean others don't.
There is no Purple Heart awards for PTSD, but these injuries still deserve care. This veteran was denied care.

Will mistakes do happen? Typically when you are discharged, they have an hour or so to go over your DD214 ( 215 ) before the final discharge date. Sounds like that was missed, and it should not need 15 years to resolve it.
That was how it was when I discharged back in the mid 90s. BTW the DD215 is a supplement, that ammends the DD214 and what's filed for missing time, rank, training, awards, recommendations,etc...
To all other vets if you run across any red tape with veterans affairs, use your representatives and especially if you have one who is a veteran. This will speed up any removals and obstacles when it comes to red tape.
What I do not understand while sitting here looking at my DD214, I had to sign it. So how come he didn't see these errros when(before) he signed his?

If you want to see what socialism/big government that democrats push for just look at the institutions the government is in charge of. The US postal service, the DMV, the VA, the IRS, and think about all the headaches you go through dealing with those people when you need help or need something done and imagine that with your healthcare, insurance, bank, shopping, child care, schooling, internet provider, etc. Yea no thanks I'll vote for the party trying to keep the government out of as much as possible. My Dad served in the Navy active duty for 12 yrs. Afterwards, he served in the Air National guard. Later, he spent another 18 yrs or so in the Naval Reserves. When it came time to apply for Military retirement, the US Government "lost" 10 or 12 years of his total service time and denied him retirement benefits.
My Dad had kept the pay stubs and was able to prove he served the time and had proof he was paid for serving. It took about 5 yrs for him to get his retirement benefits. Unfortunately, he died of cancer a couple of years later. A cancer which was suspected to be related to exposure to asbestos while serving in the Navy. The final insult was when the Military grave marker provided... had the incorrect rank. It took my Step-mother about 5 yrs to "prove" he had achieved the rank he had before retiring. The military grave marker finally arrived... and they put the wrong date of death. It took my Step-mother another 1+ years to get a new military grave marker made. So, my Dad will finally have a military grave marker with the correct information on his grave for the 7th anniversary of his death.

I'm in a similar position. Although all of my deployments were on my DD214, they left off my Purple Heart, Bronze Star, etc., from my paperwork. I was injured by an IED in Iraq and when I pointed out the discrepancy before receiving a medical discharge, I was told that, "Oh, this is just a temporary DD214 and once you get your final rating you can get it fixed then."... Well, that wasn't the case. It's been 12yrs now since I got out and I even contacted people in Washington D.C. only to be ignored.
My life hasn't been impacted as much as this guy, but it is incredibly frustrating to know that there isn't just one person/office you can contact to fix these things. You get forwarded to an infinite number of people who just keep passing you on to someone else.
I gave up after 5 years... besides, I have the hard copy for the awards that I can show when I need to (Purple Heart license plates, etc.).

Then the Taliban came in and we're cutting off people's hands off for stealing bread.

    • @forgetfulpriestiv14
      @forgetfulpriestiv14 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@Hernando Malinche first, when the Iraq war started, I wasn't old enough to vote. But even then, western politicians will say they are going to do one thing, get into power and do the opposite. So even if your voting for a good policy, you may have the rug pulled out from you. The citizens actually have no direct control over what the government does. I will agree with you that sadly, Iraq was a lot more stably ran under Saddam. But the world cant afford to have evil like that. And if Udday ever got into power, the suffering from the citizens would have been the worst the world has seen. The western countries absolutely messed up by not rebuilding by forming a non corrupt and stable government and not just leave. They really should have did what America did the Japan in WW2. They ran the whole country for quiet a while and changed the culture and standards. But because people complain about that so much these days, they didn't want to force a government on the country. When in reality, western forces should have set up a western government there for 20 years, make it stable and then hand the keys over once everything is in place. I think if you are going to go to war like that, then you should be expected to set up a stable government and way of life. But me as a Canadian, I really have no direct control on one iota of what was done in Iraq and Afghanistan. Like I said, I wasn't even old enough to vote when the war started. The western countries absolutely did need to take out these regimes, they sadly went about it the wrong way.

That change on his DD214 is the biggest thing. It makes no sense that it would show "dishonorable". Even if he only spent 6 months in the military, was on light duty the whole time handing out basketballs at the gym, and was released by a medical board, that is still worth an honorable discharge. You only get a dishonorable for gross misconduct. Even being a malcontent that keeps losing a stripe to the Commanding Officer is not enough to get you a dishonorable, you're basically a felon in the military if you get that (literally, you're committing crimes like rape or armed robbery). Maybe with no credit for his Iraq deployments, it appeared that he only served a few months, so the paperwork clerk figured he had to be getting kicked out and threw on 'dishonorable' as an assumption. Even that is a big stretch, being a discipline case generally gets you a lighter 'other-than-honorable' discharge. Dishonorable is like a bad-conduct discharge, you pretty much have to be serving time in the brig to get that. No awards shown and no credit for time deployed sucks, your record showing a dishonorable discharge carries the biggest sting.

Yeah, I agree with you. I felt like that was a poor choice of words, and I wish she would have articulated it differently. He didn’t get his honor back - he’s always been an honorable veteran. It’s about getting acknowledged for your sacrifices. He earned and deserved to have his paperwork showcase the correct information. It took newly two decades for that to come to pass - which is shameful. I’m glad he was finally able to get everything corrected, but it still pains me to witness everything that he has been through.

Again, there's NO honor in taking part in an illegal war. Especially willingly.

Even 2 years later this story is still beautiful. Too many times our veterans get screwed over so its a nice reversal

Anyone who took part in America's illegal wars deserve every single problem in their life and more.

My Fing hero! I'm still battling over medals that were "lost" because of paperwork from my time in Afghanistan. I am glad you never gave up. This is what a true Military soldier is. My support And condolences, even if it is years later.

Oh man, this brother made me cry. It took me over 10 yrs to get my disability. I can really empathize with him. Always make sure you keep a Copy of your ORIGINAL orders of EVERYWHERE the military sends you. HeII make 3-4 copies. Your Unit has files on EVERY soldier that comes through and that came through the unit. I don't know if he went to his unit to ask for a copy. After that I hope he went to the IG.
IN my unit like in all the units I served in, we were tight as a group and our Brigade and battalion commanders and sergeant Majors and first sergeants Always had open door Policies. My Brigade Colonel and Sgt Major, Knew all his soldiers Especially the ones in a war zone. My Commander and Sgt Major, would have been pissed if I came to them with this problem and they would have had my 6. This would have gone straight to my Gen'l and it would have been resolved in 2 weeks. This story Angers me to high heaven.

Truly sad to hear how he went through 15 years with most people thinking he lied after everything he did, glad it turned out right at the end.
