As a Marine vet I am not bothered by kids or those with the minds of children playing dress up or wearing parts of uniforms. It's the ones scamming that really piss me off.
The kid wearing his brother's uniform gets a pass from me. He wasn't trying to play it off like he was an army guy himself. He clearly said "This is my brother's, and I don't have anything else to wear, I'm not army". That's not stolen valor. He's just a kid looking up to his brother, and there's no shame in that.

Na .. that kid should not have been harassed. Would have served the veteran better to 'coach' him and let him know he would likely get harassed bc he has not "earned" the uniform or any title yet. An easy chat with him from a vet would have likely gone much better. The kid probably would have appreciated it and thanked him.

Idk, I mean my experience is if you have a proud family member they sell clothing for that pride. At the px I bought my nephew a mock pt uniform and army shirts to show his pride. The uniform is a sacred symbol. Even honorably discharged vets can’t wear an active duty uniform, just the dress ones for special military themed events like weddings and funerals. If someone who served can not wear it then why take sympathy for someone who just wants attention and gain cool points? Not ok in my opinion but I agree in that particular case it’s lack of education and should be handled with kid gloves to education the ignorant.

I wore my brother's dress blues when he came home after USMC boot camp, as I was still in high school and idolized him. Several years later, I earned my own set of dress blues.

I know a lady who claims to be the first ever SF women. She also claims to have 16 Olympic Gold medals. Not even joking. She is also a millionaire with a mansion but forgot where her mansion is. Oh, and she was a heart surgeon. A very accomplished lady. Never met a person that lies like that until I met her a few months ago. So crazy.
there's people who lie to deceive, we hate those people b/c they are trying to get ahead by stealing. The best thing for that kind of person is a major correction letting them know there will be real and immediate consequences for their lies. Then there are people who lie because their reality is just too painful for them to accept. The lady you mentioned sounds like that type. Some of those people just need a lot of love, tough and otherwise.

I think it's a tough-guy thing. Lots of people like to pretend they are tough, and everyone knows soldiers are tough. There's also a respect, especially in the US, for the military (although that seems to be going out the window recently) that a lot of people desire naturally. Putting on that costume and having people thank you for your service gives these pretenders the dopamine hit they crave.

He encouraged me to go and use his army spade to dig a foxhole in his garden,l while wearing his full backpack. Gave me 30 minutes to dig it and even came out and inspected it after. Digging a hole while wearing the backpack was too much for me though lol

As some one who has a younger sibling with learning disabilities this is what I see, he appears to have learning disabilities and is mentally significantly younger and doesn't fully understand everything that other people his age do understand. I served in the USMC. 16 months. Blew out my knees and was medically discharged. I was a "Remington Raider" admin clerk...I still get laughs from old school jarheads over that (prior to the 90's, all forms were filled out on a typerighter)...lol

I've been accused of stolen valor before. I was in civi's and some guy mentioned something about Afghanistan and I corrected him. He called me a liar and i showed him my military ID card. The man literally said," so what does this prove?" I've also heard stories of vets being beat up or kicked out of restaurants because someone claimed they where stolen valor

I’ll be first to say that I never served due to medical disabilities ( club foot , flat footed ) but I did loose my best friend on his 3rd turn in Iraq to an IAD. These people.... I just don’t know what to think or say. Thank you to all the men and women who have served or are serving. God bless.
When I graduated from marine boot camp I felt awkward having to fly home in my uniform. Many service members and veterans avoid wearing uniform in public besides special ceremonial events. It amazes me how most of these people can be able to show off their uniform in public when they haven't even earned it.
i agree. i hated flying in alphas. i am humble and as a young boot i did not feel i deserved any attention, then after desert storm it was even worse with the nice but unneeded thanks.

Yeah I've honestly only seen E fuzzies straight out of boot camp wearing a uniform in public. Honestly the only time I think other than coming from Basic to AIT where I've worn my uniform in public was at a Five Guy's right off post cause I was really fuckin hungry and didn't feel like changing after getting released lol.

I've been in contact with fort Lannister about these videos. I spoke to a staff sergeant there who's supposed to be getting back to me this week. When I brought this to their attention they agreed with me on the law. so I think all these military guys that have been taking these videos are about to get arrested and they should be.

@@CoreyandCrew the issue is these instances can very quickly reflect poorly on the service. The members of the special operations community are famously level headed and frequently described as “quiet professionals” which is a standard the rest of the service should emulate. Causing a great big scene and ruckus doesn’t do too much good and can actually do harm. I don’t doubt some members legitimately feel distress and anger at this disrespect and act accordingly, but you’d be foolish to say there’s not also a subset that say those things purely because they feel good and are trying to send the next viral stolen valor video up. Some of them might not ever have had friends die but say so because no one would question it and they’ve always wanted to be able to say something that dramatic. I promise it’s happened at least once before. It’s an appealing notion to publicly call someone out on their BS, it kind of elevates you and puts them in their place, but that ultimately roots from some kind of selfishness even if it is justified. I’d like to think the correct way to deal with a legitimate stolen valor encounter is to pull the person to the side privately and look them in the eye to express your displeasure. Not only would it generally positively reflect on the service since you’re not dragging random people into a big instance, it would be much more effective in putting the fear of God in them. Then the argument is “but they’ll just do it as soon as you walk away”, but really it’s not like they’re becoming a whole celebrity because of their lie. They’re affecting a tiny corner of the world and 90% of the time the people they lie to will just move on with their lives totally unaffected anyway. They know what they’re doing. I guess it’s just you don’t want to retroactively reflect badly on the people you’re claiming to avenge and honor the memory of by being a loud mouthed instigator. Any service member should act better than that.
I am a 39 year old vet. When I was working in downtown Cincinnati I met a guy who was younger than me. He told me he was a Vietnam vet. He told me he was in the Air Force who was a MA or a Master at Arms and did his basic train at MCRD in San Diego. I busted him by simply stating that he could not have been a Vietnam vet. I also told him that there is no way he could have been in the Air Force with a Navy job and gone to a Marine basic.

Had a guy accuse my buddy of stolen valir for wearing his army vet dad’s raincoat. No patches, insignia, nothing. Wouldn’t know it was military issue unless you were in. So yeah, we even got some vets goin overboard lookin for trouble.
I just so happen to sometimes wear a BDU parka shell because it's in the boat. It happens to have my name, as my Dad retired and stuffed his cold weather gear in the boat. I also have damn near had to yell at people not to give me any special treatment because you can buy them at army surplus and wearing a camo rain jacket doesn't mean I'm a vet.
I like milsurp clothing because it’s rugged, durable and cheap, but no insignia and nothing current issue. Was wearing a German tropentarn (desert camo) jacket (w jeans, t-shirt and Reebok’s, not trying to look commando at all) and a lady thanked me for my service-I quickly told her I wasn’t a vet and it was an eBay score, but I’d pass on her thanks to the next vet I run into.
Hello, I’d like to dedicate this comment to my dad, he served in iraq and has been in the military for 20+ years, he is the nicest man I know and he is just a great guy, he never wears his uniform in public (he does at work) he never uses his veterans discount and he doesn’t brag about being in the military, he’s humble and just says “I did it because it had to be done” Love you dad.
If that’s the case then very well worded and a big thank you to your dad. I’ve come across too many entitled/arrogant ex military veterans in work and school that it’s left a bad taste in my mouth. I love to give everybody the benefit of the doubt and not judge a group by a few bad experiences, but it gets overwhelming.

I've done it to a few self proclaimed Navy Seals. Really blocked a dude from a piece of tail one night. He had every woman in the bar believing him. I called him out on it. Replied with a damn year and a Buds class that was waaaay before he was even born
C'mon, the kid wearing his brother's uniform is not trying to steal something, he doesn't fool around or disrespect the uniform, if anything, it looks like he's proud of his brother and he's proud that he was accepted to serve. He didn't strut or pretend to be anything he's not, he didn't claim any valor.
I served in McDonald's. Got through my basic training and was shipped straight out to the front line. I still remember that bicycle ride, everything felt so surreal. I wondered if I'd survive but after my first few encounters, I just didn't care anymore. It would be four long hours before I'd see my family again. I still remember the look on my father's face when I walked through the door. Tears were welling in his eyes. His football team was three goals down with only minutes to go in the final game of the season. Mum was crying too. She was peeling onions. My girlfriend had left me for a guy from KFC. I was heartbroken. I did over 150 tours of McDonald's. Most of it deployed to Dandenong, just outside of Melbourne, Australia. I also saw duty in Ferntree Gully and a final stint in Elizabeth st. while I was at Uni. I can still here Johnny's screams after he burnt himself on the edge of the deep fryer. Well, not really screams, more just an "ouch". It was at that time I started drinking, on my eighteenth birthday but didn't really like it. I also got my license and bought a used car with the money I'd saved. I don't mention it often but I received six crewmember of the months awards while I was there. Upon completing Uni I received an honorable discharge. I felt so alone, McDonalds offered me no support at all despite my relentless duty. That was fifteen years ago but it feels just like yesterday. I've moved on with my life now but sometimes I still go and put on my old uniform, the grey pants, striped shirt and the hat with "m" embroidered in gold letters on it. I drag my old bike out of the garage and ride down to the local golden arches. People can tell I'm the real deal, they know I'm a veteran and when they ask me what units I served in I proudly tell them "customer service, deep fryer and drive through". I've never seen anyone trying to pass themselves off as a Macca's veteran. I don't know what I'd do if I did. As for trying to pass yourself off as someone who faced death and disfigurement while serving their country, that's a dog act. To those that have served their country and come face to face with these clowns, I congratulated your restraint if you haven't clocked them.
Thank you all for your kind support. For a long time I couldn't speak about my experiences but through counselling and I guess, the passage of time, my psychological torment has slowly subsided. For a while there I simply couldn't face reality. You are trained to hate the enemy but you end up hating yourself. I faced several encounters that could have turned out much worse than they did. Pickle ambush's were common but training and instinct gave us the tools that we needed to deal with it. I'll never forget one night though, I had my back to the shop floor, a pickle came flying past my left ear and hit the wall in front of me where it stuck like glue. I turned around but I couldn't identify the enemy, they all looked the same. I picked up a clean cloth and tended to the wall. Fortunately the wall was uninjured but I couldn't stop thinking that it could have been me. My duty manager witnessed the whole thing unfold but was powerless to stop the assault. My faith in humanity was defeated when I later learned that these treacherous assailants were just children of perhaps thirteen or fourteen years old. How could children become like this? I learned to deal with these attacks, I was no longer scared of them, I was scared of what I'd become. The enemy was still the same but somehow I had changed. I can talk about this now but it's taken a long time. My lowest point came late one night. A gentleman walked up to the counter. His reddened eyeballs were barely visible behind his sagging eyelids, his speech was slow and deliberate but rather indecisive. Time seemed to stand still while I waited for his order. His lips started to move and in a dulcet tone he said "Give us five Big Macs, will ya, mate, cheers". I was no longer a man, I was a machine. My training and now years of experience kicked in and I quickly responded with "Would you like fries and a Sundae with that"? "And two large fries, a chocolate sundae and a chocolate thick shake" was all that he said. "Dine in or take away", I asked. "Eat in, cheers", he responded. I placed his order on a tray and watched him shuffle to a nearby table. He was alone. That night I watched an innocent man take five Big Macs, two large fries, a Sundae and a Thick Shake to the stomach and I was the one responsible for the deadly assault. I've learned to accept it but I know that I have to live with that picture in my mind forever. I got out after that. Yes, my side won. The obesity epidemic was well underway in Australia and my side was hailed as victorious. I didn't feel like a winner though and I still don't. There was media scrutiny but I ignored it. Who reads Diabetic Monthly anyway. To everyone that has replied thankyou for your support. And to those that have truly served their country, thankyou for yours.

I really dont want these guys with me during basic. In fact, stolen valor usually comes from folks who got kicked out during meps or bct but never turned down a "thanks for service" from a civilian anyway. The guys who take it a step further by putting on these non authorized uniforms are a "special" case. Then again, I couldnt think of a better punishment than putting them through meps to give them a taste of military bs. If they want the reward without the work, we give them the work without the reward.

The biggest plot twist is that the guy actually is a legit veteran. He is a veteran who ventured into comedy after the service and this was a skit on stolen valor videos because they are popular.
One guy told me he was a Marine. So I asked him what his MOS was. He said "Gunny". I asked him again and he said the same thing. Then I asked him if he was in the 4th Training Battalion in boot camp and he said "YES SIR!!" So I congratulated him on his sex change. That's the women's battalion.
I don't buy this zero clean clothes idea because even if that uniform was his brother's, out of all of his brother's clothes he chose that one. Even so, I don't wait until all of my clothes are dirty to do laundry.

I had a dude jump on me because I was wearing my tan tee. Thats literally it and it was after I got back from Iraq. I answered the dude's questions for a sec before I started getting mad. A dude from my unit came by and told he dude off and told me I should have just told him to fuck himself. Some people just think they need to be a hero over everything. A real Marine is there to protect those who cannot protect themselves. They are the Sheepdog. And some of these guys here in fake utility uniforms that obviously had problems needed a Sheepdog to protect them from the wolf.
One thing though, the Soviets in Afghanistan did have some of their guys wear sneakers because the boots made too much noise on rocks and weren’t very good for the mountains.
I think what surprised me most about his reactions are how... leveled and thoughtful he is. I was expecting anger and judgment but he carefully and calmly analyzed each clip and empathized with all involved in each clip
He seems a little older and smarter, though this is not always the case(like Mattis who likes brawling or something). There are a few psychological reasons why people steal valor outside of criminality/financial reasons(which can also be circumstantial if understood), including admiration and desire for belonging. All are sad, it's cheesy to see veterans waste their time shouting "stolen valor, ima beat him up" but despite being good people not all are what you might call.. deep thinkers. Have to accept all people for what they are, successes and flaws.

He complained about the hills. One drunk guy outside a gas station failed question 1 by saying he was a Marine with 101st Airborne. If a Marine is caught w his hands in his pockets, son, it’s gonna be a looong day for him. I saw ARMY medical officers chewing gum at Fort Sam Houston. We were there for them to train using us as wounded casualties. The level of discipline and accountability is much much higher in the Corps.

Idk, I mean my experience is if you have a proud family member they sell clothing for that pride. At the px I bought my nephew a mock pt uniform and army shirts to show his pride. The uniform is a sacred symbol. Even honorably discharged vets can’t wear an active duty uniform, just the dress ones for special military themed events like weddings and funerals. If someone who served can not wear it then why take sympathy for someone who just wants attention and gain cool points? Not ok in my opinion but I agree in that particular case it’s lack of education and should be handled with kid gloves to education the ignorant.

I think it's a tough-guy thing. Lots of people like to pretend they are tough, and everyone knows soldiers are tough. There's also a respect, especially in the US, for the military (although that seems to be going out the window recently) that a lot of people desire naturally.
Putting on that costume and having people thank you for your service gives these pretenders the dopamine hit they crave.

I used to run around with my uncles stuff on as a young teen 13/14. He encouraged me to go and use his army spade to dig a foxhole in his garden,l while wearing his full backpack. Gave me 30 minutes to dig it and even came out and inspected it after. Digging a hole while wearing the backpack was too much for me though lol

I've been accused of stolen valor before. I was in civi's and some guy mentioned something about Afghanistan and I corrected him. He called me a liar and i showed him my military ID card. The man literally said," so what does this prove?"

When I graduated from marine boot camp I felt awkward having to fly home in my uniform. Many service members and veterans avoid wearing uniform in public besides special ceremonial events. It amazes me how most of these people can be able to show off their uniform in public when they haven't even earned it.

@@CoreyandCrew the issue is these instances can very quickly reflect poorly on the service. The members of the special operations community are famously level headed and frequently described as “quiet professionals” which is a standard the rest of the service should emulate. Causing a great big scene and ruckus doesn’t do too much good and can actually do harm. I don’t doubt some members legitimately feel distress and anger at this disrespect and act accordingly, but you’d be foolish to say there’s not also a subset that say those things purely because they feel good and are trying to send the next viral stolen valor video up. Some of them might not ever have had friends die but say so because no one would question it and they’ve always wanted to be able to say something that dramatic. I promise it’s happened at least once before. It’s an appealing notion to publicly call someone out on their BS, it kind of elevates you and puts them in their place, but that ultimately roots from some kind of selfishness even if it is justified. I’d like to think the correct way to deal with a legitimate stolen valor encounter is to pull the person to the side privately and look them in the eye to express your displeasure. Not only would it generally positively reflect on the service since you’re not dragging random people into a big instance, it would be much more effective in putting the fear of God in them. Then the argument is “but they’ll just do it as soon as you walk away”, but really it’s not like they’re becoming a whole celebrity because of their lie. They’re affecting a tiny corner of the world and 90% of the time the people they lie to will just move on with their lives totally unaffected anyway. They know what they’re doing. I guess it’s just you don’t want to retroactively reflect badly on the people you’re claiming to avenge and honor the memory of by being a loud mouthed instigator. Any service member should act better than that.
I am a 39 year old vet. When I was working in downtown Cincinnati I met a guy who was younger than me. He told me he was a Vietnam vet. He told me he was in the Air Force who was a MA or a Master at Arms and did his basic train at MCRD in San Diego. I busted him by simply stating that he could not have been a Vietnam vet. I also told him that there is no way he could have been in the Air Force with a Navy job and gone to a Marine basic.

Had a guy accuse my buddy of stolen valir for wearing his army vet dad’s raincoat. No patches, insignia, nothing. Wouldn’t know it was military issue unless you were in. So yeah, we even got some vets goin overboard lookin for trouble.
I just so happen to sometimes wear a BDU parka shell because it's in the boat. It happens to have my name, as my Dad retired and stuffed his cold weather gear in the boat.
I also have damn near had to yell at people not to give me any special treatment because you can buy them at army surplus and wearing a camo rain jacket doesn't mean I'm a vet.

I like milsurp clothing because it’s rugged, durable and cheap, but no insignia and nothing current issue. Was wearing a German tropentarn (desert camo) jacket (w jeans, t-shirt and Reebok’s, not trying to look commando at all) and a lady thanked me for my service-I quickly told her I wasn’t a vet and it was an eBay score, but I’d pass on her thanks to the next vet I run into.

Hello, I’d like to dedicate this comment to my dad, he served in iraq and has been in the military for 20+ years, he is the nicest man I know and he is just a great guy, he never wears his uniform in public (he does at work) he never uses his veterans discount and he doesn’t brag about being in the military, he’s humble and just says “I did it because it had to be done”

If that’s the case then very well worded and a big thank you to your dad. I’ve come across too many entitled/arrogant ex military veterans in work and school that it’s left a bad taste in my mouth. I dont think its that big of a deal regarding the kid that wearing his brothers uniform. He admitted it of the bat and is not trying to gain anything from it. The others however, are absolutely despicable.

I think if you find the original video (don’t quote me but if I remember correctly) his brother was actually killed in the Middle East and I think more than anything he was just trying to cope and obviously need help more than anything.

I served in McDonald's. Got through my basic training and was shipped straight out to the front line. I still remember that bicycle ride, everything felt so surreal.
I wondered if I'd survive but after my first few encounters, I just didn't care anymore. It would be four long hours before I'd see my family again. I still remember the look on my father's face when I walked through the door. Tears were welling in his eyes. His football team was three goals down with only minutes to go in the final game of the season.
Mum was crying too. She was peeling onions. My girlfriend had left me for a guy from KFC. I was heartbroken.
I did over 150 tours of McDonald's. Most of it deployed to Dandenong, just outside of Melbourne, Australia. I also saw duty in Ferntree Gully and a final stint in Elizabeth st. while I was at Uni.
I can still here Johnny's screams after he burnt himself on the edge of the deep fryer. Well, not really screams, more just an "ouch". It was at that time I started drinking, on my eighteenth birthday but didn't really like it. I also got my license and bought a used car with the money I'd saved.
I don't mention it often but I received six crewmember of the months awards while I was there.
Upon completing Uni I received an honorable discharge. I felt so alone, McDonalds offered me no support at all despite my relentless duty.
That was fifteen years ago but it feels just like yesterday. I've moved on with my life now but sometimes I still go and put on my old uniform, the grey pants, striped shirt and the hat with "m" embroidered in gold letters on it. I drag my old bike out of the garage and ride down to the local golden arches.
People can tell I'm the real deal, they know I'm a veteran and when they ask me what units I served in I proudly tell them "customer service, deep fryer and drive through".
I've never seen anyone trying to pass themselves off as a Macca's veteran. I don't know what I'd do if I did.
As for trying to pass yourself off as someone who faced death and disfigurement while serving their country, that's a dog act. To those that have served their country and come face to face with these clowns, I congratulated your restraint if you haven't clocked them.

Thank you all for your kind support. For a long time I couldn't speak about my experiences but through counselling and I guess, the passage of time, my psychological torment has slowly subsided.
For a while there I simply couldn't face reality. You are trained to hate the enemy but you end up hating yourself.
I faced several encounters that could have turned out much worse than they did.
Pickle ambush's were common but training and instinct gave us the tools that we needed to deal with it. I'll never forget one night though, I had my back to the shop floor, a pickle came flying past my left ear and hit the wall in front of me where it stuck like glue. I turned around but I couldn't identify the enemy, they all looked the same. I picked up a clean cloth and tended to the wall. Fortunately the wall was uninjured but I couldn't stop thinking that it could have been me.
My duty manager witnessed the whole thing unfold but was powerless to stop the assault. My faith in humanity was defeated when I later learned that these treacherous assailants were just children of perhaps thirteen or fourteen years old. How could children become like this?
I learned to deal with these attacks, I was no longer scared of them, I was scared of what I'd become. The enemy was still the same but somehow I had changed.
I can talk about this now but it's taken a long time.
My lowest point came late one night. A gentleman walked up to the counter. His reddened eyeballs were barely visible behind his sagging eyelids, his speech was slow and deliberate but rather indecisive. Time seemed to stand still while I waited for his order. His lips started to move and in a dulcet tone he said "Give us five Big Macs, will ya, mate, cheers".
I was no longer a man, I was a machine. My training and now years of experience kicked in and I quickly responded with "Would you like fries and a Sundae with that"?
"And two large fries, a chocolate sundae and a chocolate thick shake" was all that he said.
"Dine in or take away", I asked.
"Eat in, cheers", he responded.
I placed his order on a tray and watched him shuffle to a nearby table. He was alone.
That night I watched an innocent man take five Big Macs, two large fries, a Sundae and a Thick Shake to the stomach and I was the one responsible for the deadly assault. I've learned to accept it but I know that I have to live with that picture in my mind forever.
I got out after that.
Yes, my side won. The obesity epidemic was well underway in Australia and my side was hailed as victorious. I didn't feel like a winner though and I still don't.
There was media scrutiny but I ignored it. Who reads Diabetic Monthly anyway.

I really dont want these guys with me during basic. In fact, stolen valor usually comes from folks who got kicked out during meps or bct but never turned down a "thanks for service" from a civilian anyway. The guys who take it a step further by putting on these non authorized uniforms are a "special" case. Then again, I couldnt think of a better punishment than putting them through meps to give them a taste of military bs. If they want the reward without the work, we give them the work without the reward.
Run them through Basic till they cry.

I had a dude jump on me because I was wearing my tan tee. Thats literally it and it was after I got back from Iraq. I answered the dude's questions for a sec before I started getting mad. A dude from my unit came by and told he dude off and told me I should have just told him to fuck himself. Some people just think they need to be a hero over everything. I dont mind calling out actual stolen valor but a fucking tee, like nobody knew I was in the military cause of it.

There are a few psychological reasons why people steal valor outside of criminality/financial reasons(which can also be circumstantial if understood), including admiration and desire for belonging. All are sad, it's cheesy to see veterans waste their time shouting "stolen valor, ima beat him up" but despite being good people not all are what you might call.. deep thinkers. Have to accept all people for what they are, successes and flaws.

Gaming Kornel The ARMY has lower standards than the Marine Corps. Leadership does it so the junior soldiers do it. If a Marine is caught w his hands in his pockets, son, it’s gonna be a looong day for him. I saw ARMY medical officers chewing gum at Fort Sam Houston. We were there for them to train using us as wounded casualties. The level of discipline and accountability is much much higher in the Corps.
My Dad is a disabled veteran and he says that if you're a real veteran, the VA will provide to housing and food. He says to give them zero sympathy.
