My brother was a deep sea diver for 10 years. He has a lot of scary stories. The worst one was when they were working on the sea floor and some equipment fell off the boat but before they could radio down to warn the divers, my brothers partner was struck, crushing his windpipe. The divers got him back to the diving bell while he was still alive but he didn’t make it. They had to wait till is was safe to depressurize with their dead buddy. My brother was never really the same after that.

I don’t see how a couple guys couldn’t have hopped over the seats to get behind it while someone keeps it distracted in front and then just jump on its back and pins it there until they safely land.

Chris’s story was a roller coaster of emotions for me. It seems he had a pretty rough childhood, compounded with an already innate sense that the world as it is just isn’t really natural anymore. The way we live, the way we’re packed in on top of each other but we’re all still strangers. The 9-5, the having to pay to actually be alive, the way we often have to choose career over family just to make sure our families survive. It’s all just completely messed up and counterintuitive. He needed to get away, likely didn’t trust people to the point of fearing them because of his childhood, yet didn’t know how to survive on his own. So he ended up having to steal to survive, but never put his hunger above the safety of others, so he was empathetic to others, and showed remorse for stealing from them to survive. What a heartbreaking story. I wonder if he feels any less alone having finally rejoined society. Somehow I doubt it.

I read the book about the North Pond Hermit. It was fascinating. When he showed the cops the way to his hideout they were amazed how he moved like an animal and moved from rock to rock and swing on branches so as to not leave footprints. He stayed alive in the winters with no fire by staying awake all night constantly moving, then slept in the day when it was relatively warmer.

I love that "we are used to it" line. How do you get used to cold that extreme!!! I am cold a lot of the time, only truly warm a few months a year, spring and fall have enough chill that I am almost never without a sweatshirt or hoodie... When I walk from my car to the door on my office building I will curse things under my breath as I count every step until I get to the door - and that is in say 10 degree F. I do wear a hat, gloves, and have a multi layered winter jacket but it still gets to me.
Weird thing is I was not always like this, not sure exactly when it started but it has been this way for I am thinking 5 or 6 years now??? Someone suggested that an illness that I caught traveling overseas is the reason, and I actually heard someone independently say this in a recent conversation about the same thing happening to them so perhaps... but yea, my teeth will chatter and I will shiver frequently even with the extra layers on so who knows!

We have our own "wild man" here in Washington. One day, he just picked up and left the corporate world, where he made a ton of money, earned a Masters Degree, and had a big home, because he was absolutely miserable. He has no problem with human interaction, and only sometimes goes into town to purchase supplies. He lives in Olympic National Park, where he forages and hunts for his own food. There was a big court case about him, because technically you're not allowed to just live in the wilderness of a national park. But, the state decided that, in his many years of living there, he had never hurt anyone, he kept his area clean, and that his lifestyle was his choice. He still lives there, where he teaches wilderness survival, and even had his own TV show for a while. I applaud this man. We have too many laws in this country that are specifically designed to keep you trapped, and property and tax laws made just to make money off of citizens. If you want to live off the grid, that should be your choice, and no one should have the license to infringe upon it.

One paranoid guy that was super quite and stuck to a single hidden area- whereas Bigfoot supposedly runs around banging on trees, screaming, having weird interactions with people, and exists as an 8 foot tall humanoid, but I guess their bodies just evaporate upon death.
Way more reasonable to not find a single individual, rather than to not discover a semi-common mega-fauna despite searching for decades for any trace- bodies, for instance.

I had a great history teacher who got into it like he had lived it. Didn't have the same skills as Mr. Ballen but he made history fun. He looked over the tops of his glasses at us as he savored our reactions to the twists in countless tidbits that he shared that weren't in our books. He pitted the boys (the ubermenchin) against the girls (the others) in trivia preparing for tests. He also drove the ice cream truck in the summer months.

Had two history teachers in my first two years of high school where the only way you would fail is if you didn't pay attention during the lectures. They taught like nobody else and didn't believe of sticking to the textbooks as they didn't contain everything. Ballen would make an excellent history teacher.

Actually that's when he shared the "good stuff." After class. The stuff that he could get in trouble for telling. Horrible torture methods and things that he would never share with us 'others.' Only his 'Ubermenchin.' I'm sure I'm spelling it wrong. The boys shared the stories with the rest of us though. It may have all been made up for effect but we weren't tested on it and it made history like something taboo almost so of course we ate it up. It may sound like he was a chauvinist but that was tongue in cheek. He used that as a tool as well. Drudging up man vs woman competition was a way to get us girls to work harder to show him and his boys up.
