      This is an example of just how blindly you can function "on automatic pilot"... We often wonder how people can blunder so lucidly into such REMARKABLY STUPID sh*t from time to time, and this is how that can happen, too... It's a matter of the brain building those "muscle memories" or rather what the neuroscientists call "procedural memory"... In fact, a person can suffer total amnesia to the point that he or she can't even tell you their name, but put a new pen in their hand and tell them to sign something, and it's a matter of legibility as to whether or not you'll get a name out of it... as often as not in such cases, THEY CAN SIGN...
      We (humans) DO have the power of individual free will, but to exercise it takes energy. Our brains cost about 25% of our daily caloric intake, making them VERY expensive as organs go. SO... it's practically automatic that our nervous system as a whole tries to find more efficient ways of functioning on all fronts, including turning any regular routine into procedural memory. Add in some neuro-plasticity, and you can get some VERY intricate and elaborate processes done as automated functions with no more thought actively put to them than walking or breathing.
      SO when Peter was so far brain damaged as to be "dead on his feet" he was capable of all the procedural memory items... the routines he'd probably done daily for DECADES, and he simply went through all the motions... and without a single possible thought to the details, from the bleeding to the missing jaw, gaping wounds all over his head and shoulders... nothing... It's equal parts fascinating and horrific. ;o)

      Several years ago the dept of transportation bought a house I rented for a road expansion. They sent agents to help residents on our street with relocation. These agents helped each of us find new living quarters paid for by DOT. My agent helped me negotiate a rental in an apartment , the DOT paid a year in advance, which was simply compensation for the inconvenience. It is notable that I am a book keeper, and this was on my rental application. The apt manager thought it was all very odd and finally asked if it was really the Witness Protect Program. When we told her no she remained skeptical. The agent and I found it amusing but thought nothing of it at the time. I moved in and things were fine. But everytime I went into the office after that the entire staff would become quiet and stare at me in awe. I finally accepted that they were never going to accept the "DOT story" and for the next year I enjoyed the reverence and awe of the staff, finding it quite entertaining. I've since moved, but run into people from that office from time to time. I still enjoy the notoriety.

    Two years ago, a schizophrenic son killed his parents with an axe two doors down from my house. His dad was an artist, and the son, after killing his parents, pulled all of his dad's paintings out of the house and piled them across the road. That huge pile of paintings was the first thing we saw before we knew about the murders. The son was convinced the government had planted a chip in his head, and he had to do whatever he was programmed or told to do. I am surprised that story was not more widespread; it's highly unusual for this small city.

    As a mother, I can understand why acting to love I our child unconditionally even after they do something so horrific not only to someone you love, but to you too. I honestly don’t know how she let him stay in her home. But I also know that brain injuries are extremely complex and make you do wild things. My sister is still recovering from a TBI after a car accident earlier this year. She was in a medically induced coma for 2 weeks and spent about a month in a Neurological rehabilitation hospital. For a while after her crash, she 100% believed that someone had attacked her and stabbed her and even said a person she said knew did it and was upset with us because we weren’t trying to have him prosecuted. It was really wild. Her leg had been crushed in the accident and she needed 2 surgeries to put it back together… and in her mind, those were stab wounds caused by a broken beet bottle. It was so wild because her memeories of this were very vivid and specific and even caused us to wonder if she had been attacked at some point and was remembering a completely separate incident. Then one day she just stopped talking about it, now it seems like she’s accepted she was in a car accident because for a while she didn’t even believe that. It’s a sad thing seeing a loved one not be able to remember things from their life and be a completely different person. It makes me wonder if her brain made her think he wasn’t a threat to protect herself from the pain and trauma.

      Reminds me of my friend that was found on his kitchen floor after suffering a heart attack.
      At he hospital, he was hooked up to all kinds of machines and was in a coma
      It so happened that the day I visited him I was startled when he ‘woke’ up, started ripping the tubes and wires that was hooked up to him and he looked at me and asked me if we are still going out for breakfast because we planned it the day before his heart attack.
      He proceeded to look around the room and had this quizzical expression for a few seconds then fell back down into his hospital bed. By this time nurses came barging in because of the alarms he set off by tearing away at the tubes and such.
      It was a pretty creepy moment.
      He died the next day.

If a person receives blunt force trauma to the brain and doesn’t know it, they can go on living for quire some time like this man did. At first wasn't sure what to think, but as time went on it became very evident it was a paranoid delusion. They sold everything and went overseas to "escape". Then came back with stories of meetings with prime ministers and a big conspiracy. They'd used up all their savings. Really quite startling how they both believed it. The husband had previously spent time in mental health facility. I still can't wrap my head around it. They called the police at one point on the "cult" and the police called a psychiatrist for them. Unfortunately they cut contact with anyone who showed any doubt on their story and have since disappeared again... No doubt on the run from the invisible pursuers.They were smart and kind so this mental delusion that cost them their peace, sanity and savings is really astonishing and sad.

The horrific and brutal nature of the crime was enough to make it unforgettable but for me, that unnervingly gruesome detail about him going through his morning routine after being bludgeoned-pouring himself cereal and going as far as getting his newspaper and getting himself back into the house after being locked out-is what took this beyond the level of your typical true crime fare and made it the stuff of nightmares!

      @clon76
      Yeah, your silly anecdotal "evidence" doesn't reinforce your disagreement here. That's laughably far below your child trying to murder you, murdering their other parent, and then you not only implicating them, but rescinding that accusation, and then posting their bail and keeping in contact with them. There is absolutely no connection between your analogy and this issue described in Chris' case for many reasons, among them being the consistency of the poor behavior. Kids push boundaries and learn about manipulation by doing at a young age. That's healthy and normal, as long as boundaries and discipline is set out accordingly. It's not normal to continue with consistently acting that way into adulthood and then having enablist parents, family, friends, etc. continuing to support poor behavior through lack of consequence.
      I've known people with parents that think they can do no wrong and have very few healthy boundaries with them, their entire lives. They are absolutely the kind of people that wouldn't know how to respond to something like this in any functional or healthy way. They are also absolutely the kind of narcissists that would believe they're still in the right and "punish" the other party for daring to claim otherwise. If it's not punishment, then it's simply them not knowing how else to handle the situation, and impulsively lashing out in some harmful way. Point is, these are the types of people that grow into entitled, self-centered, toxic, and reckless adults.
      A kid getting disciplined regularly (according to their behavior, obviously) and knowing healthy boundaries does not add up to whatever is wrong with Chris. It's a valid suggestion, given the aftermath of this incident, that he may have been treated this way his entire life, or some of his life. It's also possible he's just fucked up in the head. Regardless, his mother's enabling behavior is a problem. Consistency is absolutely the key to raising another human, and it can make or break that human if done poorly.

I feel like it was in some way a blessing that the father was made unaware of the injury due to the trauma to his brain and did not suffer before his death. Even the mother was spared the memory of it. That is so tragic and sad. I cannot criticize Mrs. Porco because she truly has the special love that only a mother could have.
