There was no shortshifting at all, it was stuck between gear ratios once or twice into corners which wouldn’t have affected the time and CERTAINLY wasn’t driver error or intention
I'm not sure what I just watched there. None of these cars are in the same league and you probably should have reviewed a Focus ST at the same time to prove the Pista would be quicker! I'm not knocking the Pista, it looks like an absolute weapon but you can't put it up against cars with over 100BHP less and expect to provide a balanced review. Lazy journalism if you ask me.

so the 991.2 gt3 rs on cup2 r tires did a 1.14.7. that's ok. if it wasn't for the fact, that a 991.2 GT3 did a 1.13.4 on worse tires. that's interesting. i know it was stated the tires were already fading but 1.3s slower compared to his less capable sibling? i won't call this test rigged in favour of the pista, as it seems to be an amazing performance car,and yet it raises some questions in my head. anyway, Autocar, i'm honestly thankful for producing such videos and offering them for free. especially since you've been using the same "tire tiers" for these cars so that at least one of the most important variables has been equated for.
And yes, i find it also nice to see cars from different price and performance categories being tested!
All wheel drive helps in some circumstances especially in the hands of a non professional driver.

Not sure if it was rigged ... but it really ended up looking like so based on the car selection, times. The 488 they got a 0-60 just a tick below claimed (which is rare), however they were 0.3s off on the GT3, and 600LT 0.5 off ... Also how did the 488 do 3.0 0-60 when it was spinning it's tires ... that should have cost closer to 0.5s ... might have been multiple tries though, so might be possible that was the reason. 0-100 488 was 0.5 off pace, 600LT was 0.6s and GT3 was off 0.9s ... Do not expect them to hit pro levels ... but the slower cars should have been closer, and the faster further off ... they have this upside down ... again seeding doubt here.
I know that F in the past give 'special prepped' press cars, and Porsche give stock cars with no interference (McLaren seems to be both ...). So perhaps this was a 900hp pista?
I love all these 3 cars ... but something is 'strange' here ... (track order is pretty much as expected though).
600LT also has done between 2.8 - 3 seconds 0-60 in a few different reviews, but I guess if you put a bad enough driver 3.4 is the result.
goguhu Apparently 5% slip to 95% grip is the fastest way to accelerate from standstill. So a little visible overspeed of the driven tyres should be a sign of well calibrated launch control
So the Porsche is on worn tires, no Weissach package, and no magnesium wheels. That’s definitely how you stack the cards. It probably still wouldn’t have won but it would’ve been much closer.

How do you know the 600LT and 488 Pista was specced with all options too? You can’t scream Weissach Package for one car without knowing if the others have their best specs too.

Wheels aren’t the only option to make the Ferrari more performance-spec, and I doubt it’s the only option for the McLaren too.
So can you please confirm if the McLaren and Ferrari had all options please? If not then my point still stands about the Weissach Package. Don’t complain the Porsche doesn’t have it when we don’t know if the McLaren and Ferrari are specced to their best either.

Im not complaining or anything in that matter, Im just pointing out the most expensive option on a car. The other 2 cars even with all the options shouldnt be able to beat the pista, because they have a huge power disadvantage.
The more realistic comparison would be comparing cars either powerwise or pricewise, this is pointless...
The pista is currently the fastest ferrarij ( after the laferrari), but the gt3rs and 600lt are not the fastest cars porsche and mclaren make (again excluding the hypercars)

The 488 Pista should be up against the GT2 RS and whatever the LT form of the 720S is because thats how their lineups are
not really, just because Mclaren likes to launch 10 cars in a year doesn't mean they line up now

@@Nick-zf7rq Plus, there is a lineup: 540GT and C, then the 570S, then the 600LT, then the 720S, then whatever the LT of the 720 is gonna be, then the Senna, then the speedtail. Thats what they have currently
The competitor for the Pista is actually the 675LT. Pretty soon that will change once Ferrari releases the mid-engined big brother to the 488 and the Pista competitor will be 600LT

I agree with others that the Pista shouldn't be compared to the 600LT or GT3RS. They are in different categories and the 720s / GT2RS would have been the better target competitors from a price and performance perspective.
The Ferrari still laps this track quicker than both of those cars.
@King of sting you cant compare any car with any other car since they all cost different, all have different power and weights, also being driven a few times making imperfect laps

The Huracán LP610-4 competed with the 911 Turbo S (991), 650S and 488 GTB, not the 570S.
The track versions would compete, which are the 911 GT2 RS (991), Huracán LP640-4 Performante, 675LT and 488 Pista. However, the McLaren is too old now because McLaren release their cars too quick.
The 570S competes with the R8 V10 Plus.

Doesn’t matter if they were replaced, the 458 Italia competed with the Gallardo LP560-4 and MP4-12C. The next-gen cars will therefore compete, and those cars are the Huracán LP610-4, 488 GTB and 650S. When the 488 GTB came out, they were still producing the 650S.

DDW Partners Agreed. Inexperienced driver, invalid results. Jethro Bovingdon went 1.1 seconds quicker in the 991.1 GT3 RS. So that .2 RS, proportional to its ring lap over the gen 1, should be right on the Pista’s tail.

@@rossmackinlay You've got to be kidding if you think the 0-60 times are slow because of driver error. He's using launch control and has the throttle buried to the floor in all three cars all the way through. The time is dependant on external factors like surface grip, tires, temperature etc, not driver skill..
Speednote10 Ross was talking about the lap times. And in terms of acceleration the gt3 es would also have been a couple tenths quicker with fresh tires like the pista. But obviously a 500hp n/a car vs two turbo’d cars with nearly double the torque can’t keep up acceleration-wise

@@davidyates8880 If it's between about 2.1 and 3.8 seconds faster than the others it doesn't really matter what track it is. 2.1 seconds is 5 years on a hot lap and 3.8 is a lifetime. 2 TENTHS of a second would be a competitive difference.

I'm merely stating that this video is not comparing it to its competitors in the real world (look at the prices), I'm merely making an observation on the driving shown in this particular video. The GT2 RS would be a better competitor, although I note from the video their reasons not to include it. The Pista is always going to be faster than the 2 in this comparison, however, dependent on which track, the Pista is quicker on some and the GT2RS is on others.

All the times were crap to be fair but especially the gt3 considering it had mpsc2 R compound! Those things are 2 seconds quicker than the usual mpsc2 it ran on before.
The same driver drove them, on the same day... If Jethro drove them all and they all went 1 second a lap faster what does that prove? It’s really not a surprise that the Pista is the fastest, it fucking wants to be considering how much more power it has and how expensive it is. Why are so many people crying about this?
The 600 was 10 mph slower into the first corner! Mostly due to being in the wrong gear over start line, really inconsistent driving when we are used to the old hands driving these cars properly

I think this guy is just overly biased and sandbagged the lap just to keep the Porsche, the superior car, from winning. If the 3RS went up against the Ferrari at its own price range, the Portofino, it would dominate. Nothing against the Portofino though.
Totally innacurate comparison, he was driving each car inconsistently and in no way to draw a fair comparison. Get a pro driver or Sutcliffe to do this sort of test next time.

I can't remember the last time Ferrari participated in a competition in a car magazine. I really appreciate this.
Disgraceful Autocar bias, mentioned the list price of the Gt3 but said nothing about the 488 Pista. All these test should be like for like, imagine the uproar if they tested the 720lt in a year against a bog standard 488.
Seeing as the 488 GTB competes against the 650S, I wouldn’t be surprised at the uproar. Putting it against the track version of the next-gen car.
It's not about price, it's about what kind of cars they are, i.e track focused (and more importantly - what they happened to have lying around for the Best drivers car test).
@@Speednote10 Fair enough on the track focused point but price plays a massive part. Comparing a car £110,000 cheaper makes the test a joke. It would be totally unfair to test the 488pista against a Senna for example, there both track focused but theres a huge price difference.

I think it was an interesting test just like I thought the 720s vs Senna was interesting because you can see the difference between the cars, it doesn't have to be a like-for-like test every single time. Just take it for what it is, entertainment.
@@Irishesbox11 the reasoning behind it is simple, the cars being run are all up for best drivers car of the year. The 600lt and the GT3RS are preferred by most people for their driving experience. There are other tests which show the pista in action vs its competitors where it wins most of its runs and loses a few to the GT2RS depending on the track.
A shame they couldn't get the now old Lamborghini Huracan Performante

@@detective3728 The Evo is the new entry level Lamborghini. The Performante is Track version of the Huracan, it isn't a replacement because if it were it would be faster than it. The Evo borrowed some tech from the Perf, and Lamborghini has said there may be a hotter version of the Evo ie: Superleggera or Performante. Calling a car that came out in the summer of 2017 old is a little silly, especially since its the only car in the world with the tech it has.

Ferrari was faster using track/street tires while the 600LT was on street tires... Tires make such a big difference on those tests and cars.

Not saying the other cars were not enjoyable, but there was no reason for Auto not to choose more suitable alternatives to really compete against the Pista, hence the feeling that Ferrari was like "we're not doing this if our car gets beaten".

@@lucioledizerot196 they are running cars that are up for driver's car of the year. Many motorists dislike the feel of the 720s by comparison to say a Huracan perfomante, 600lt, gt3rs as they are better driver's cars but less performant overall. That being said, so far the pista has beaten the gt2rs and the 720s on various tracks.
It seemed the McLaren was not being driven very aggressively. The RPMs should be running at 5000 or higher while on the track to keep the turbos spooled. It sounded like it got down to 2-3000 around the turns which will definitely make the car lag. I think it would beat the Pista with a professional driver.
i agree. I watched this a couple of times and there is a vast difference between the agression shown by the driver coming out of the final corner to start the flying lap
I shouldn't beat the Pista, not on this track, but it could come a bit closer. For the driving, there are some errors in all runs, as you would expect, but you are right, the LTs seem the most costly - just the run-up to the first corner and the carry through there alone...

I highly doubt it would beat the Ferrari. The Ferrari is already beating the 675LT and 720S on multiple tracks, maybe it’s just that the 600LT isn’t quicker than the 675LT like McLaren claimed.
I would like to see someone like Randy Pobst do a review of both cars. I think we all could agree that he is a great journalist and professional driver and he would know doubt push both cars just to the breaking point.
None of the cars was driven to the limit. It seemed like he was shortshifting every gear in the Ferrari and like he started slowing down like 3 times sooner than he had to. Not once did the tires on the Ferrari lap make any noise at all, not even close to braking as late as possible or accelerating out of corners hard as possible, or going through corners as fast as possible.
It was stupid to use that model Porsche when you know it has deficits associated with the model! No one thought a Performante more suitable? You guys do this for a living right?

I find it funny how the GT3RS n the 600LT is so quite n tame comapred to the Pista yet if u look at any other video, the 911 is sooo much louder + it even upshifted twice when only needing to upshift once. I guarantee this is some bs.

i couldn't agree more. What a joke of a test. I had to re-watch as I thought I was mistaken by the cruising out of the final corner in preparation of the start of the lap in the McLaren. Seemed like lots of sort shifting going on as well

Agree. I think the comparison is reasonable, but the GT2 RS would have been far more competitive. Also, having fresh rubber would have been a no brainer for a test at this level.
Pricing is somewhat academic as we’re not comparing cars that just anyone can afford, but the McLaren and the Porsche are significantly less expensive and therefore provide far better value.
The 720S would have smoked the Ferrari and the next LT in the Super Series (760LT or whatever) will rag doll the Pista.
@@stevenwest5685 wrong there are videos of the pista keepingup with the 720s in a straight line and on every track test, it is faster. Perhaps when the LT version of the 720 comes out that'll be a different story. That being said, apparently according to people with insider information the 488 replacement is coming and is going to be far more performant than the 488 family.

Your best video in a long time imo! Great camera angles and editing. Aside from the tire condition you mentioned for the RS, it sounded like (in the video shown at least) that you missed some shifts as well in the RS 🤨... Lastly, do you really think that the 600 LT is a better track car than an RS?? Then, why don’t you see many at a track (ie compared to an RS). Maybe, it had something to do with McLaren’s now notorious reliability issues...

Porsches are too common right now. McLaren, however, is a better designed and good looking car than an example: Porsche 911 Turbo S.
The problem with Porsche is the design on the car, I'm not against it but they need to move on I mean come on look at it, still a freaking beetle from the 1940s.
Can't wait for the customer cars to get delivered and tested. It will be nice to see how honest they are once all the press and pre release cars are done.

@A Gustavsson you're absolutely right. Porsche is by far the most reliable supercar company out there. Ferrari is bought out by Chrysler and has plenty of engine reliability issues and McLaren is known for its slew of mechanical and electrical issues.

@@frenkgsi Ferrari has notoriety for lack of reliability. Chrysler owns it after all and the companies that share tech with Ferrari (alfa being one) has a slew of mechanical and electrical issues. Having had a few Porsche cars, I can attest that Porsche is by far the most reliable both for daily driving and for track days (Lexus being by far the best sports/luxury company period for reliability but does not have the performance of Porsche/Ferrari/Lamborghini/McLaren/etc...).

Road track test are stupid if all the variables aren’t the same just like Nürburgring times. Every car tested needs the same tires , driver and da and temp . All affect lap times . Better tires can’t make up to 1-2 sec a lap that’s a night and day difference in a 50 lap race. I promise you the gt3 handles better than the Ferrari and Ferrari was scared because the gt2 rs would have wiper the floor with them in every test.

Nice driving, I’ve just looked over my Vbox data from last summer. On colder tarmac you are going circa 6.5secs quicker in the 488 that a regular joe in a 458 and 4.5secs quicker than a joe in a 911.1 non RS GT3. I don’t think cup tyres and the cars engineering improvements account for that. Good commitment 👍

@Jonathan Bowen you're not following me are you? I even stated that it's ridiculous to argue that the GT3 is better than the GT2 RS in this company. It would be like arguing the Ferrari California is better than the 488 Pista. The GT3 may be a more pure driving experience but in this test raw horsepower and performance account for A LOT. Imagine a test where they put the GT2 RS against a normal 488 because the standard 488 is a lot more comfortable than the Pista. Would it make sense? No, right? And we'd probably whine about it. It's the same here. It just makes no fucking sense to pit the Pista against lesser rivals and then drone on about how fast it is.

The lt kept up but its true rival the 720s with smash it and the future 720 lt model will embarass it. Mclaren makes the best cars. the 720s is slower on every track test done so far. The results only vary when comparing pista vs GT2RS where the GT2RS is winning on slower and more technical tracks and the pista is beating the GT2RS on faster tracks.

You totally spoiled the head-to-head by using the wrong Porsche, come on is common sense and should have been the GT2 RS. Thumbs down 100%!! Likewise, the correct McLaren to use should have been the 720S (even if its LT version is not out yet).
The one and only interesting piece of information that I was able to extract from this clip is that the Pista is slower than the 720S to 100 mph.

They clearly state they are simply testing the new cars. It just so happens ferrari released a higher range model just recently and Porsche/mclaren had lower range models. You're making it out as a competition. They're just showing the data and comparing
Amazing comparison between a $350,000 vs a $240,000 and a $190,000 lap breaking time machines.
The MP4-12C are now available in the US for under 100,000. The value drop on McLarens is HUGE. Ferrari's hold the value much much better, especially the lighter, faster versions like Scuderia, CS, etc. It is something that has to be considered.
A gt3 rs is nearly 100k cheaper than a pista... Even a gt2 rs is cheaper than the pista. Poor test.. Maybe the pista is even quicker than it's real rivals, but this comparison like shown is pointless.
Hint: The Toyota Gt86 is also slower than the pista...
You do realise they're just comparing all the latest cars? They've already tested the 720s, GT2RS. These 3 are just the newest cars and it's a comparison. They never say which you should buy or which is better for price..

Dennis B. It's obviously not a competition.. everyone knows the pista is a higher range model than the other 2. The data for the 720s and GT2RS is out there to compare it to ( it's quicker ). They have already tested the 720s and GT2RS. They can't always just wait for all the manufacturers to release the exact same line models and then compare them all at once.

Pista has been great in most tests and this talk of besting all records isn't true. P1 still has one of the fastest time at Angelesy. When Pista was tested in the US vs ZR1, GT2 and Senna it was the slowest on track. At the end of test it wasn't picked in the top 3. ZR1 actually was chosen over Senna.

Every time Ferrari brings tyres to the track the video is about promoting how better than everybody they are. This track is too small to heat up tyres on the gt3rs

yungdadi what are you on about? These testers only use this track.. it's easier because it's far shorter. With the ring if you stuff up one small section it makes the time invalid and it's a huge track. Much easier with a smaller track and much easier to memorise.
I don't understand why you think the Porsche should set a better time? It has way less power than the other cars and that's just it. It's probably just as quick in corners but the pista and 600LT gain heaps of time on the straights. They're 2 and 1 second quicker to 100mph respectively.
Also the pista used the exact same tires, how do you know they didn't warm them up enough for the pista?
Why not use the Senna or even a 720? That said 1.7s down on the Pista, I will take that.
720s is more of a rival to the 812 actually, and not even the track focused car like the LT series.

Obviously, if you'd raced the Ferrari against the gt2 and the 720s, which are the mid-range equivalents of the Ferrari, the results would be very different.

With 200 more in horsepower the Pista should win over the GT3r, but he could/should have definitively pushed the GT3rs way harder. These tests are not really meant to be taken seriously if you want to know which is the fastest car, in my mind at least. Since they are not using professional drivers who are well familiar with the cars.
Definitely didn't. Also, EVO drove the previous GT3 RS and current GT3 on non-R tyres on the same track... and was faster with those than Autocar with the current GT3 RS on Cup Rs. Doesn't sound right...

You can practically have 2 gt3rs for one 488 pista. 3.3s off the pace isn’t a bad deal imo. even gt2rs starting msrp is $290k (still cheaper than 488 pista). Im pretty positive it will be neck n neck between the two.
