      Yeah but the engine in the McLaren designed around an old Nissan engine McLaren bought the blueprints to. They then gave those blueprints to Ricardo to refine the engine for the McLaren. Nothing F1 about the mechanicals in the McLaren. That’s where Ferrari is still a better bespoke car. You are getting F1 tech and mechanicals from F1 and Race cars!

    • @75KoDe
      @75KoDe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Beard Mechanix firstly that engine is not just a Nissan engine it’s from a bloody Le Mans race car! Also, besides of the bore of the original engine McLaren and Ricardo redeveloped the whole thing so calling it a Nissan engine is simply not right. Also, which team was it that for example introduced a carbon fibre tub in their F1 race car for the first time in 1981 which set the standard for any F1 car to follow ever since and is using this tech in every road car they are producing? Let me tell you it’s not Ferrari so would probably reconsider your point about transfer of F1 tech into road cars here. Don’t get me wrong I love Ferrari but you gotta acknowledge what McLaren has achieved in just 10 years of building road cars

    • @beardmechanix1642
      @beardmechanix1642 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      75KoDe I’m talking engine mechanicals not carbon fibre tubs. Redesigned the whole thing? Not really. The engine has bore and port work and some modern day twin scroll turbos but other than that, it’s still a Nissan engine. The engine is built for purpose. It’s built to make you go fast where as in the Ferrari, it showcases what real F1 components can do for a road car. The engine becomes apart of the driving experience. It’s a masterpiece of an engine. This coming from a 720S owner and McLaren fan boy! McLaren may have the carbon tub but the overall build quality is atrocious.

      I do agree with you, especially the 458 Speciale. Clarkson and Hammond may mocked May when they talked about the 488 during the news section from an episode of either S20 or S21 of Top Gear, but personally speaking, I'd rather have the 458 instead of the 488. The 488 may be faster, but the turbo is a big turn off for me. And before you mention F40, let's just be clear that there is no predecessor to F40 as far as I know.

      720s breaks down every week. 720s is far from the best supercar

    • @Robwilli
      @Robwilli 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@Chris-nn2fx It is a machine and all machines break no matter what brand. You know how many 720s are there running around perfectly? More than the ones you see in TH-cam breaking down, way more.
      People always criticize of what others say, specially if coming from TH-cam or social media. Only because you see TH-camrs financing these cars (any brand not just McLaren) and many of them misusing them to the point that they break, doesn't mean the car is bad. There are many rich people that have these cars and they don't break.
      What would you think would happen to a "reliable" car let's say a Toyota Corolla. Or whatever car you think its reliable. What would you think would happen if you stepped on the gas all the time and accelerate it all the time and track it all the time and many other things...? It would break obviously, something would give in.
      The fact that supercars are somewhat made for track performance doesn't mean you're going to kill the car doing so. And even some do it and they are reliable still.
      Ferrari's break, Lamborghini's break, Porsche's break, Mercedes break, BMW's break, Koenigsegg's break (why do you think owners don't risk their cars on certain tests with their koenigsegg, because they're afraid of them braking), Bugattis break...
      They all break man, sorry but that's how it is.

      It is why I always find these comparison videos pointless.
      The premise of the film was what is the better road car.
      Through out their comparison they complain about how bad the Ferrari is on the road (probably because is was designed for the track gents) and how good the McLaren is on the road (again because it was designed for the road)
      Then summing up their final thoughts, because the McLaren is compromised on the track ((wait wtf! I thought this video is about the road ok then change the premise of the film lads I’ll stick it out) again because the McLaren was designed for the road) where the Ferrari isn’t compromised on the track (😤because it has been designed for a track) and the presenters prefer the track like feel to the chassis of the Ferrari (🤬that’s because it was designed as a track car and the McLaren is a road car so they didn’t need to design it in) the Ferrari wins. 😡🧠💥
      So if it is the track like quality that you find the most appealing thing in a car then the Ferrari that was designed for the track was always going to win wasn’t it.
      But wait the Ferrari had fancy seatbelts that made feel special 🤣 what a pillock

      Why would it be irrelevant? Is it because it took 3 years to better the 675? You are missing the point like Autocar no one has pointed out how great the Pista maybe it still took Ferrari 3 years to better it. We all know the 720s was Mclaren’s original GT car for every day use with super car qualities. I hear a lot of good things about the "trick suspension", but it cannot possibly be anywhere near the creature comfort an S-Class or the likes offer, just seeing it bounce around on these roads while you were just cruising along, there certainly is a ton of other cars that have better comfort...

    Honestly, for road use, anything over about 400 hp will always be mostly annoying. You can never put your foot down (unless you live near an Autobahn), you end up spinning tires when you don't intend to, but you will still pay disproportionaly - in every single way - for power you can't use.
    I really wished McLaren and Ferrari would consider making cars that are a bit slower - but with much more soul. Screw turbocharged V8s (these belong solely in AMGs imho, where they actually fit quite nicely) and give it a high-revving naturally aspirated V6, F6, I6 or I5 - maybe a V10 for power-obsessed perverts -, and then add carbon fiber lightness. Alfa and Porsche have come close to this recipe with the 4C and Boxster/Cayman, but there is still room out there to built the perfect modern sports car.

      Yeah... but then it doesn't really compete against the Pista. The 488 and the 650s entered production around the same time. McLaren just unveiled the 675LT quite early in the 650's life. Ferrari took longer to develop the Pista (as Lamborghini did with the Performante). But, at the end of the day, the Pista and Performante compete against the 675LT. The only reason that the 720 happens to be relevant is because the 488 successor (and 720 competitor) hasn't entered production yet.

      It's in south Wales, a string of roads I like to call the 'Ponty Triangle' - I film all my reviews there too 👍

    Two fantastic cars but I’d be tempted to get an R8 Performance, save 100K and they wouldn’t see which way it had gone in the wet.....

    @autocar You have to put the 720S in track/track to turn ESC off. I believe this is ensuring that the car is most responsive when ESC is off which is what you need.
