Porsche 911 GT3 RS vs Cayman GT4 RS: Definitive Track Test | Top Gear

  • Porsche has graced us with two incredible RS cars in 2022, and we’re here to find out which is best.
The new GT3 RS isn’t just inspired by motorsport, it’s a full-blown race car. The engine is a 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six revving to 9,000rpm and producing 518bhp. It’s got 860kg of downforce at 177mph and 406kg at 124mph, well over double those of the 991.2 GT3 RS it succeeds. But worry not, this is still not a slow car - 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 184mph.
However, if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Porsche stuffed the stupendous GT3 engine into the back of its mid-engine baby-brother, the Cayman… the GT4 RS is your answer. It’s the most hardcore, powerful and track-hungry Cayman Porsche has ever made. 493bhp, 332lb ft of torque and 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds. The question is, can it give the more expensive GT3 RS a run for its money?
Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix and Ollie Marriage give us the rundown on track.

6:49 was the full 20832m track layout. The 6:47 done by the gt2rs was only the 20600m layout. So actually the gt3rs was faster by some 3 seconds. However, that gt2rs was on cup 2 tires and not cup 2R. With the Cup2R AND the MR package, the equivalent full track layout time was 6:43.

There is a huge tyre size difference between these cars. Cayman 718 GT4RS: 245/35R20 (F); 295/30/R20 (R), 992 911 GT3RS: 275/35R20 ; 335/30R21. The tires widths do make an enormous difference on high speed turns, which the ring is riddled with. Definitely a controlled ingredient as part of precisely separating these from a marketing perspective. IMO get a cayman and spend the $ difference on slicks or full R comps.

    • @jasonb71

@@K1Kamikaze If you do not know what you're talking about, then please don't comment. I own both of these cars, plus the new 992 gen 911 GT3 RS...plus the 992 GT3 Cup car. They don't "detune" it. It's the same engine, flipped 180 degrees, to fit in a mid engine platform. The reason it has 9 less HP and 15 less lb-ft is because of the longer exhaust system. You are however, correct, that they would never let it beat the bigger brother GT3 (let alone the even bigger brother GT3 RS). The bigger reason isn't the slightly less HP and torque...the bigger reasons are: 1) way less downforce than the GT3 (and waaay less than the GT3 RS, of course), older 991 suspension on the GT4 RS whereas the 992 GT3 and GT3 RS have the first double wishboe suspension in those cars. 3) Even though it's the smallest dimensionally, it's the heaviest of the 3 cars. My manual GT3 is 101 lbs. lighter than my GT4 RS (and the PDK GT3 is 64 lbs. lighter)...and my GT3 RS is 53 lbs. lighter. 4) Gearing...the GT4 RS has shorter gears...but that can be good or bad depending on track specifics. So, "detune" is a lazy way to talk when you don't know the facts. The only thing that is correct is that they make sure it doesn't beat the GT3 family and, yes, IF all other things were equal (which they are faaar from not), a mid-engine platform would be superior.
