- In Episode 2 of Llandow Laps, Chris Harris puts two of the latest supercars through their paces: the sensational 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and the new McLaren 750S. Powered by a naturally aspirated flat-six producing 525hp, the GT3 RS might win purists’ hearts, but will it be enough to see off the monstrous 750hp twin-turbocharged V8 in the McLaren?
Arguably, the GT3 RS appears to be the more track-focused machine, thanks in no small part to its substantial rear wing; but with 40% less power and a higher kerb weight than the McLaren, it’ll really have to make the most of that advanced aero to find grip on the slippery 0.9-mile Llandow circuit.
After a brief and ‘confidence inspiring’ chat with Chief Marshall John, the only thing left to do is set the fastest possible lap time in these two phenomenally powerful machines, all while trying to avoid, in Chris’ words, “a full code brown”. Llandow Laps is our exciting new series, hosted by Chris Harris at the 'legendary' Llandow Circuit in South Wales.
The concept behind Llandow Laps is to pitch two vehicles from the same genre against one another to see which is faster; and the first series will feature grand tourers (with a twist), hot hatches, supercars, roadsters, and restomods.
As well as showcasing the cars’ performance on track, the films will also reveal the behind-the-scenes work required to produce the end result, introducing some of the personalities from the Llandow Circuit and the Collecting Cars team.
The science bit: All cars featured in Llandow Laps will be unmodified from the specification seen on screen, they’ll be running with a full tank of fuel, and they’ll be fitted with sensible tyres available on the road cars from the factory.
Lap times will be recorded, and a winner of each head-to-head will be revealed - although there’ll be more focus on the driving experience and character of the cars than on the numbers alone.

at this one drift day i went to, at the end drivers briefing (at 8:00 am) a very small margarita was offered to every driver and as i took mine the organizer said to me "now go have fun out there." So i did.

I've never been a Mclaren fan, not very fond nor excited by supercars in general really, I much prefer relatable car content... but watching Chris drive that 750s, in the wet, seeing his reactions and facial expression, and hearing the noise of it down that home straight, really, really excited me 😬 what an absolute machine
The fact that the GT3 RS did a 49.08 while the M5 CS did a 49.24 is truly insane. That's a roll caged track weapon and a school drop-off grocery getter .16 of a second apart. Think about that.

it's more the track and conditions hampering the other cars. it's a short bumpy track, it's raining it's cold everything is in favour of 4WD here. the M5 ia amazing but it's got massive advantages in this specific track. I mean an M5CS did a 7:29 round the Nurburgring the GT3RS did a 6:44 - The M5CS did a 1:52:30 round hockenhiem (power circuit) the GT3RS 1:44:40 even a AMG GT63s beat the m5CS round the Nurburgring (7:23) and Hockenhiem (1:52:20)
McLaren clearly running on a much wetter track. I’m guessing it would gain a little of time if run on same conditions.
on straight line they have an advantange because of more power.
Love these videos, they're great. Really like how there's a tiny bit of transparancy behind how the video is made, it's really interesting to see/hear things like the different tyres and how the cars need to be warmed up etc. Please do more of these, this is a great format.

the GT3 was in a very big disadvantage since the circuit isn't really about grip or cornering speed and handling (slow corners only) so the more powerful car (the McLaren) will always win.

@@TIWNA851there is an independent maclaren guy in the Uk that knows where all the gremlins are and will fix everything including pannel gaps ,
I know you shouldn't have to do that but if you want the peace of mind and money isn't an issue it's the way to go if you must have a maclaren
720 was all new for them 750 has many updates and improvements learnt from 720 applied so should be better.
This series is fantastic, love to see Chris and the crew in their element, without the unnecessary facade of TG style overproduction.

Thanks Chris. Absolutely phenomenal. Wow, the McLaren 750S did much better than I expected for it being wet conditions. I was expecting the Porsche GT3 RS to win. Out of the two, it would the McLaren that I would like to own (if it was possible). Here in Australia, the Porsche is $581,935 drive-away plus options, whilst the McLaren is $628,582 drive-away plus options.
I’d take these videos over the top gear stuff any day of the week. Great job to all involved

It’s actually far more than 225bhp, the 750s is rated at the wheels and the Porsche at crank.

@@Mk1Male - Actually this isn't true, Porsche are known for always being spot on with the numbers they quote. Sure you get owners take their cars to back-street dyno's that are very optimistic which creates this sort of opinion but whenever they get tested on a dyno known for high accuracy they are always on the money. The same is true of McLaren's they are almost always delivering the number stated, they are just rating their power levels at the wheels rather than the crank which is why they always make so much more power than people expect. Almost all manufacturers rate at the crank but McLaren do it at the wheels for reasons only they know.
@@LeeXRV I think you'll find people's opinions differ massively on this subject. A quick google search reveals this. Oh, and this isn't the case that people are using back street dynos. The simple thing that remains is that no two engines from the same manufacturer, built to the same standards, are the same in power. Fact.
If you have definitive proof otherwise feel free to post it as well as your claim Porsche are always spot on with their numbers. I doubt you'll find any Porsche evidence claiming that.

That gap is huge on a small circuit. And the fact that it was wet as well, means the winner did it WITHOUT being able to fully deploy its power advantage. I can only imagine what the difference might have been in the dry. What a beast.

I would like to point out how damn good the M5 CS is. I know Chris owned one and was most familiar with it but seriously, in the company its running with as far as availability and price point, well freaking done to BMW holy hell! GT3RS is still my ultimate dream car because I am a crap driver and want the downforce 😂
Only 0,16 second slower than the GT3RS. On dry it would be more but still amazing.

I wish you guys would also include a flying lap time for each car so track day guys can get some kind of comparison to our own vehicles at Llandow.
That's exactly why they DON'T do it, so that people with a tuned Golf R on warm semislicks in perfect conditions can't go around boasting that they matched Chris' lap time in a GT3 (in the wet after 2 warm-up laps).

Harris historically doesn't go above 4k rpm in ferraris when timed on tracks
I'm assuming you're using some other definition of "all motor" considering the McLaren is twin-turbocharged.

I used to live near there - I did a few laps at Llandow in an Elise S160. I cannot fathom something like a 750s around there. Lovely thing.

my god what a great comparison, the cars go about their business in such a different way, I love how the GT3 just looks like it's inhaling the track and the Mclaren seems to dance about on top of it

Had the pleasure of driving a GT3RS back to back with a McLaren 600LT on a track and I definitely had a similar reaction getting out of the McLaren.😅 Thinking that this one has another 150hp is just insane.

Judging by that onboard, the GT3 RS wasn't really taken to its limit. It's strange that the 750s somehow looks more approachable in these conditions.

I'd be curious to see the same matchup on a faster track. The aero on the GT3RS didn't really get a chance to kick in there. Both amazing cars though.
Would be interesting cos the 750s would pull a LOT faster on the high speed straights but would the gt3 rs make up enough time in the high speed corners ? In my ops-i dont think it would but who knows. Think nurburgring would be a good test for them both
But the McLaren would pull so much more on the longer straights. Mclaren is just a far quicker car
Gt3rs aero is unfair. Its surprising how 750s can even keep up with it in track, it should be Gt3/Gt2 vs Mclaren senna.

Greeaat test thanks. I own a 991GT3mkii and a 675LT. I totally agree with Chris' point: 675T is soooo engaging, sooo wild. With a bit of track/race experience, comparison is not even fair. I love the GT3, but it is actually closer to a sport car. Once you've driven a 675LT, world looks a different place. McLaren is a brand on its own.
It's amazing that noone today would set out designing a high performance car with a rear- mounted engine and yet Porsche continues to develop class-leading cars...

In the wet that's not overly surprising. Not only does the M5 CS have AWD, it also has tires that are less extreme and therefore more suited for this weather.
