    [RAZER BLADE PRO 17 2020 HANDS-ON / FIRST LOOK]
“Desktop replacement” laptops aren’t great for a life lived on the go. But in case you hadn’t noticed … we’re not doing a lot of “going” these days! In fact the furthest I’ve taken my computer for most of 2020 so far has been from one room of my apartment to the other, with maybe the occasional field trip up to the roof. For this kind of situation, where you’re never gonna be too far from a power outlet or a tabletop, but still want as much power and display real estate as possible, the desktop replacement laptop is ideal -- and the Razer Blade Pro 17 (2020) is one of the most capable you can buy. It also happens to be the very first Razer Blade I’ve ever used - so join me for my first thoughts after two days!

@@TheMrMobile They can only have the battery so big before they run out of room for cooling the laptop. That's why for gaming it's better to have a desktop. Got mine to replace my old Razer blade 14 from 2015 and I can say It it quit perfect for me
    - Beautiful 144hz screen
    - Simple prenium design
    - Good audio powered by Dolby
    - Good battery life to work outside ( ~5h )
    - Powerful enough to run all my games at 120fps minimum
    - The temperature is about ~75 when I’m playing, it’s good compared to my old Razer with ~85
I think if you are looking for something powerful with a good battery life and portability, this is the right choice, it is worth the price.

I actually just made the same switch. My previous laptop was a 2012 MBP Retina and i just got a Razer blade 15 base 2019. One of the biggest drawbacks of the Blade is that it does get very hot and the fans spin A Lot! The biggest gains are obviously the performance in productivity applications and games. I did have to go through much effort to cool the system down with changing the thermal paste and undervolting through Throttlestop. I have been able to significantly expand the battery life (to 4.5-7 hrs) and have the laptop typically running at 47-52C instead of 52-57C when I first got this thing.

So, under heavy load, the Razer outlasts the MBP 16" by a little but with regular use, the MBP 16" outlasts the razer by over 2 times. Source: notebookcheck.net

I've got a Blade 15 Advanced (2018). First unit had a failing mic, followed by a failing webcam. I went through the support channels, and while it took a while all-in, I got an essentially brand new replacement unit shipped back to me. Common problems you'll hear about is coil whine in their power bricks - and that their laptops are simply over-speced for the amount of cooling they are capable of. This is similar to Apple, as both companies sacrifice a little function for form. I undervolt my CPU/GPU to balance the scales.

@@minimcune Yeah for some reason the battery is only rated for 300 cycles and there are some random sleep and hybernation issues. Also when you plug it in the screen goes black for a second for some reason. Don't own one, just looked at a bunch of reviews

My first and last Razr laptop GPU died 1 month after warranty ran out. It still worked off the intel chip. Used it a few more years with an External 1070 GPU for gaming and Adobe.

You have to update the speaker drivers, not sure why they're not factory prepared. The sound will be twice as good once you do so.

I have the Razer Blade 15 from 2018. I’ve recently bought a MacBook Pro 16 to replace it. My blade 15 failed in a multitude of ways.
Microphone stopped working, webcam stopped working, many many blue screens, I had my first plastic hinge protector inside the laptop crumble into four peace’s and a replacement I bought and fitted myself also crumpled weeks after I replaced it. The razer logo stopped lighting up and I’ve had graphic abnormalities on the screen. I feel like I need to mention I do have extremely bad luck with technology despite how much I love and take care of any product. To give razer their dues, the did help me out and resolved almost all of the problems however, because of all of the issues I needed to send the device away for repair four weeks before a flight to film a documentary abroad the laptop did not get delivered in time and I was left without my work laptop. Once I got the laptop back I spent a day reinstalling and updating everything then the following day the fan that cools the GPU started violently vibrating and grinding the whole laptop and I had to shut it down and restart multiple times before the issue would go away only to come back the next time after I shut it down and didn’t use it for a few hours. For anyone still reading this I apologise wholeheartedly if this appears like a rant! Although the laptop failed me and I cannot recommend them to anyone it did ultimately serve me well despite it’s problems, at the end if the day it’s a tool for gaming and creativity (I mostly used it for editing and Minecraft every now and then)

I've only switched over from a gaming laptop to, now, a desktop for three years. It's different not gaming where you want (i used a lap pillow to not fry my nether parts off). It's better now since I live in my house (with kids to boot) and can dedicate my gaming to one room but I have had many fun gaming years with my laptop for sure.
The razer is a high-end option for sure but very expensive, I think mine was custom-built half the price but I can't see a reason why not to get it, if you want to spend the money.
    Thanks for the video

I'm gonna throw my Razer experience into the ring here. I picked up a 2018 Blade 15 Advanced off Ebay last year, and despite the many, many issues the thing has had since then I still like it a lot. When I was first setting it up and installing updates, somehow both the built-in webcam and microphone broke such that they don't even show up in Device Manager anymore. The cooling on this machine is pretty bad, especially when "gaming mode" is activated. I was thermal throttling on even lighter games at low settings until I opened the thing up to clean and repaste it. And the Synapse software, while really fun and useful for Chroma and performance options, crashes over half the time I try to use it. I did quite a bit of digging on all these issues, and none of them seem that rare, but everyone who talked about it in the Razer subreddit or forums were immediately moved to private messages with Razer support instead of publishing any details. And predictably, when I contacted Razer support to get some information they refused to talk to me because I got my Blade second-hand. All that being said! The light-to-medium gaming, streaming, and audio production work I do with my Blade work perfectly well, and I still can't get enough of the 144hz display and tiny bezels. I doubt my next computer will be a Razer, but I'm keeping this one around as long as I can.

Get a 'desktop replacement laptop' and play games on it by putting it in your lap!!!
    What a genius idea!
I guess there might be some people out there who play games on desktops by stacking their keyboards atop their CPU cabinets over their legs...

the pro 17 has a relatively small battery because it's flanking two extra fans at the bottom to direct air flow and improve cooling performance and I think it's a well thought out compromise considering you won't be using it far from the wall anyway

Should've gone with the studio edition. Smaller (15 inch 4k calibrated display), lighter, just as powerful, and spec'd out specifically for video editing (Quadro RTX 5000)... and it can game, although not as well as your current laptop, but it's capable. It's the same price, too.

It's an impressive machine, but the price (almost unavoidable) and Razer's quality reputation leave a lot to be desired.
It's good to not see the common desktop replacement bashing that goes around. They have their place and if you find them useful, well you probably find them *very* useful.
And yes, more reviews like this please!

The desktop replacement or desktop debate is a genuine one and shouldn't just be dismissed on either side. I've used my Y50 for 4 years as a desktop replacement and for university paired with a screen, and it's unreplaceable for that! But I've switched to a desktop which I plan on SFFing and will probably stay that way, since I can get one to last a lot longer and for a lot less. Barely any real users change tech out so much! Plus there's always the option to remote into it with an ultrabook around the house.
