  • Razer Blade Pro 17 packs a ton of great hardware in a thin and light gaming laptop. The standout features are the 4K 120 hz display, RTX 2080 Super Max-Q GPU, and the i7-10875 8-core processor all housed in a unibody aluminum construction. But with so many great laptops out there at a cheaper price, is the $3799 spec'd Razer Blade Pro 17 worth buying? Here's my honest review of the Razer Blade Pro 17. Enjoy!

    • @Fisustin
      @Fisustin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bushliu5922 There's no graphics driver issue per se. Just that you're not able to automatically update your Nvidia drivers from GeForce experience until Razer has specifically created a new version of Nvidia's drivers with the custom modifications needed for the RBP.
      Essentially you can try to force-install a non-compatible version straight from Nvidia, but based on experience of others, this tends to break Optimus as well as 120hz functionality on the built-in display.

    That may be the most thorough review of the blade pro 2020 out there, and i've seen them all - so thanks for that! How would you compare the 300hz screen with the 4k touch ? Are the brightness and overall quality really different ? I'm a developer/data scientist so I'm wondering if the 4k is not overkill for my use cases. Would a higher resolution on a 17 inches really be better for my eyes ?

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the thoughtful comment! I haven’t seen the 300 hz display in person yet, but based on color analysis and brightness tests from other reviewers, the 4K 120hz should be noticeably brighter and more colorful in a side by side comparison with the naked eye. The 300 hz display I believe only has 300ish nits brightness and 75% adobe RGB, which isn’t bad, but isn’t the feast for the eyes like it is with this display.

    • @commandercody206
      @commandercody206 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m a developer and gamer, and i recommend the 4K 120hz to the 300hz as 4K would really help you in modelling, colour work. But that depends on your role. 300hz would work very well for animation allowing for smooth pre runs and such. Depends on your roles and that can affect how you perceive the screen.

      It runs at 90W most of the time, but I did get the GPU to go up to 100W when I set the GPU performance setting to HIGH, and the CPU performance to LOW. Far Cry 5 had reduced performance with this setting though because it is partially CPU bound. In GPU Bound games, you could get higher performance with this setting I believe.

  • @LeonardoAlexi
    @LeonardoAlexi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Love the review! Thank you so much! I wonder though why is it that Razer does not have a configuration option for the i9-10980HK CPU? The Gigabyte Aero 17 comes in a similarly-sized chassis, and does have that option. It can't be a thermal concern because Razer's vapor chamber does a great job. It can't be a cost concern either because it'll be an option, not a default configuration.

    • @Fisustin
      @Fisustin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably just that they didn't see the need to offer extra option as there's not that much of an actual benefit to having it.
      Unlike most other manufacturers, Razer is quite small in laptop business which is why they can't afford to have really big level of configurability, they are saving significantly by only having a few different more popular SKUs in store at any given time so having all new 2020 RBP models (and 2020 RB-Advanced) with same CPU will save significantly on overall costs.

    • @LeonardoAlexi
      @LeonardoAlexi 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Fisustin Yeah that makes sense. Since posting my question here, I got nearly the same answer elsewhere as the one you just provided. I don't foresee this changing in 2021, not with yet another 14nm CPU (Rocket Lake-H). However, if the leaks are accurate, and if Intel switches directly to 7nm from 14nm in 2022 with Meteor Lake-H, maybe Razer will see tangible performance benefits from offering the i9 as an option then.

    • @Fisustin

      I personally switched from my MBP 15 to the Razer 17 around two weeks ago. If you have the money definitely aim for the 4k screen, the 1080p screen on a 17 inch screen makes icons incredibly fuzzy. Also with a 1080p you wont have a glass slab in front of the screen which makes it look slightly dated. The CPU is definitely ample enough for 99% of the tasks normal people do.

      I been doing "research" on the two myself as I am thinking about buying one or the other. So far it comes down to a Ninja vs a Samurai. The Blade Pro being the Ninja and the M17 being the Samurai.
      One is efficient, runs cool and quiet while getting the job done as well as offering tons of features (Razer).
      The other is powerful and uncapped, but runs a great deal hotter and as a result louder. (Alienware)
      The fact of the matter is the M17 isn't that much higher than the Pro 17 in benchmarks (fps). If you are going to spend $3k on a laptop make sure its something quality like the Razer.
      On the other hand if you are going to spend around $1700-$2100 get the Alienware as you will want to have as much power as possible being so far down the rung. Even tho the Blade 15 at $1800 looks pretty good as well.... sigh such a hard decision.
      Anyways thats my two cents hope it helped (sarcasm).

If you switch it to Optimus it’ll display again on the laptop screen but you lose the ability for 120hz (this is for the 451.48 update). Before you buy mate, there is an ongoing graphic driver issue, search Razer Blade pro cannot update graphic driver, you will find out

    • @Fisustin
      @Fisustin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no graphics driver issue, however you will need to wait for there to be a version that Razer publishes with the custom modifications they've done to run it on RBP with the Optimus and 120Hz display.
      This does mean that instead of update every few days, you might get just two or three updates per year, but generally you shouldn't be expecting any significant performance penalty or issues because of this.
      Edit 25/09/20: the graphics drivers are updating like normal and have been for a month or so since they released the latest bios patch.

    Does the secondary (non-TB3) usb-c port support display-port and power delivery functionality, or is it simply used for data share?

    • @Fisustin
      @Fisustin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it supports both :)
      Though the power delivery is rather minor as you're only going to be charging this laptop for about 100w if using USB-C anyway, which is less than what it needs at full power.

    What is that game a little over 2 minutes in?

    • @Fisustin

      It's not OLED, to get a display with OLED you need to get the 4k, 60hz touch screen version of 15" Razer Blade.

    I was deciding between the Razer Blade 17 Pro and the Razer Blade 15 both have the same graphics card and processor, the only difference is the Razer 17 Pro has 4K display with 120Hz while the Razer 15 has 1080p with 300Hz display, I was lucky enough to be able to try both of them playing the most high spect games to date and I ended up returning the Razer Blade 17 Pro as an exchange for the Razer Blade 15.
    I do want to throw it out there that the Razer 17 Pro will lag at times and overheat due to power inefficiency, the laptop has problems being able to power the 4K display while running 2020 Triple AAA games like DOOM eternal, don't expect the Razer Blade 17 Pro to be able to run Cyberpunk 2077 getting 60FPS at 4K - ultra graphic settings you may end up getting around 50FPS if you're lucky.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The higher color gamut display on the Razer Blade Pro 4K 120hz is a huge improvement. I typically don't game at full 4k resolution on mine. I usually run it at 1440P and can't notice the resolution difference in games since the display is only 17". But this way I still get the full color gamut increase.

Every time I see a reviewer, they talk about how amazing it is and it makes me really want one, however when I go to places like Reddit or even some of the websites where they sell the laptop, you read the reviews and it's hundreds of people have gotten lemons. @Elmer: Had several high-end laptops, though this one is actually the first one by Razer that I've had.
      They've usually had no problems (once with a Clevo had a minor issue with keyboard backlight that managed to fix in software), and after a year or a few when the warranty is over you can usually squeeze still a bit more power out by overclocking, as their thermal systems tend to be designed with a lot of margin.

My M17 R3 with just performance fan mode (not annoying at all unlike full speed mode), stays in the high 70's with 100% load on all 8 cores at 4.1ghz.. it can do the default 4.4, just, without throttle. I am still so bummed this laptop GFX card has died and dell don't have a part replacement so they are refunding the thing 6 months after I bought it, and I keep looking for replacements and just aren't satisfied with anything yet.

    Great review, just bought one actually, but I have a request, remove the "Honest" from your video title - it's just an unnecessary word to have in a review title, because it suggests that your other reviews aren't honest? Even if a review product is sent to a TH-camr, it absolutely doesn't mean that the review is dishonest nor non-genuine. Putting the word "honest" doesn't in the title doesn't change anything, other than to undermine your content.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've been contemplating removing it. I do not mean to imply other honest reviewers are dishonest (most are honest imo). Unfortunately not all reviewers are honest, there are plenty of dishonest reviewers out there that are associated with the brand and do not disclose the relationship, which is the reason I add it.

    • @Droning-ON
      @Droning-ON 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GizmoSlipTech I do agree, but maintain your own standards and remove it, honestly the viewers can easily tell if someone is on the payroll, they're far more desperate and fail to discuss any negatives. I have to say, Razer's biggest problem in Europe is their customer services right now, I messaged weeks ago with questions and still no response, specifically the issue that their website doesn't give UK keyboard options unless you're in the UK (I live in Sweden). Almost went with the XPS 17 instead but couldn't resist the RTX2080 and so ordered the machine on Amazon.

    how does a $3799 laptop in 2020 not come with an i9-10980HK?! MSI GS66 wrecks this for cheaper.... Same GPU but with i9-10980HK, 300hz display, and 99.9wHR battery life. When the 2020 GS75 17" comes out, it'll destroy this laptop even more, for cheaper.

    • @Fisustin
      @Fisustin 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference in speed between these two processors is minor, especially as it comes in the end more about the capabilities of the cooling system to sustain the temporary boost before thermal throttling sets in.
      So it's not really visible how it would "wreck" this laptop that actually feeds way more power than most max-Q GPUs get, so Razer will likely (pending actual benchmarks) win by a significant margin in GPU performance while looking and feeling very significantly more premium with the single piece aluminum frame.
      It's a slightly different market segment :)

This razer is being severely limited. Darn. If it gets to 88c as it is at 3.5ghz, the vapor chamber obviously can't deal with a higher power limit.. That would be the real reason they have it so low.
