Apple had shit the bed for a few years (since 2016) but lately they won me over again. I'm still using my mid-2015 mbp but with all the upgrades and the rumors for the upcoming macbooks I'm not so worried about what my next laptop will be now.
@Bgkillas No it just doesn't. I have used Windows since at least version 3, I have used Linux since you had to install from a million floppies and Macs for about 10 years. Linux has many of the issues of Windows (having to be written to run on everything instead of being able to concentrate on a few devices), no self-made hardware to partner with it (like the Apple trackpad) and its lacking huge amounts of software (which Windows of course mainly wins at). The Macs have strengths that Linux simply cannot compete with.
When you think about the time Taran spent editing to add all these twitter comments but then you remember he probably did it in a minute with 200 macros.
My favourite aspect of apple stuff is their focus on experience. They want you to feel happy or satisfied or even just satiated without having to dig into it in any technical way. The trackpad is a good example. You don’t really care how they made it feel so great to use but you do end up wondering why every other trackpad ever made feels like hot garbage in comparison lol
This is what I love about Apple products. They put a lot of focus on user experience and it goes a long way. I daily drive Windows on my work laptop/desktop at home and Linux on the servers at work but own both an iPhone 13 Pro Max as well as an M1 iPad Pro. I use both my phone and my tablet while having AirPods in my ears and the simple fact that audio output to my AirPods automatically switches between both devices, depending on which I'm currently using, is fucking amazing. Every device Apple produces is so easily paired and configured; it's incredibly intuitive and it's a pleasure to use. Everything just works so well together and stays out of my way after a long day of bullshit at work. I'm looking at getting a MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement soon and delegating my desktop to a Proxmox host. That's how much I love their ecosystem.
@@OhMyKMPR right on. There are pros and cons to any OS situation, but when both are an option, I always go to macOS and apple in general. Sure, it ain’t perfect, but the experience is almost always better overall.
It's funny because Apple products like their keyboards and mice feel like cheap toys with a worse experience than some dollar store technology to me. They even developed mice that don't let you right click in the past, why?

I take issue with point 10. Apple has consistently taken it upon themselves to decide what the customer wants for them, even if what they do is actually detrimental to their users. Example: Apple deciding that 32-bit programs are too ancient and just cutting them off from Catalina, even though many people still use 32-bit programs on the daily.
Worked in IT for 26 years and used every single MacOS OSX version from the first release 20 years ago, till the last. So I've been using Windows and OSX extensively at work and home over those years. When it comes to OS consistency, reliability and privacy, Windows does not stand a chance at getting me back from MacOS. When I have a say in the matter, MacOS / IOS for me, Linux and the BSD's for my servers. I only use Windows when I have no choice.
Same. Been in IT since 1996. I've used Windows since Windows for Workgroups/Windows 3.11. I was a NT 4 MSCE. At work I use Windows, because most of my clients do and I have no choice. I'm very much a pro user on Windows. I write code on Windows, I use Powershell. But boy do I hate the OS. First of all it looks pretty much like it did 20 years ago, but worse, the whole user experience is the same inconsistent mesh. From app to app, menu's are different, short cut keys are different. At home I have Macs and a Proxmox cluster to run my Linux servers on, I also have a bunch of Raspberries for all kinds of fun projects. We always had iPad's in the household, but I never had a use case for it myself, until I got the iPad M1 + pen and now I use that extensively for 3D drawing, Concept app for concepts, etc. So for me it is Mac and IOS for clients and Linux on the server all day. I have one Windows gaming machine from which I stream games on all our other devices.
i only have a windows pc specifically for gaming, the only reason ive found that i "need" windows. usually if my mac doesnt do the job i just switch to linux and do what i need to
@FDMtech Those pop up wallets can also be had on Amazon for fairly cheap as well. I own one, though I originally 3D printed one way back when. Definitely a nice accessory.
For me, it’s Apple’s undeniably fantastic suite of accessibility features. I’m visually impaired, and these products have allowed me to work and create like no others. I would even confidently argue that nothing in the industry can remotely compare; especially when you consider the rest of the things mentioned (the ecosystem, seamless and efficient design, universally user-friendly interfaces). I think this quote from Jony Ive about Apple’s design philosophy perfectly summarises why I love using these products: *”I think there is a profound and enduring beauty in simplicity…in clarity …in efficiency. True simplicity is derived from so much more than just the absence of clutter and ornamentation... it's about bringing order to complexity.”*
@horriblepancake until that moment, I thought they wouldn't take the risk, and so could have recorded the laptop on a different time and put the records together before

I own a MacBook and iPhone for daily use and studying/work. But for gaming I use a pc. You shouldn't think about gaming when buying a Mac. you also don't think about productivity on a playstation :p
with the existence of geforce now and apple silicon, this is becoming less and less of an issue. I just sold my gaming pc in favour of a Mac because I love macOS, even though I do game from time to time. The fact that my MacBook Air can run metro exodus at 50-60 fps is mind blowing, and enough for me.
I hope he does. All the systems have advantages. Windows is it's very wide reach and the fact it will run on anything pretty much. Linux is distro-shopping to ones hearts content. Want security, get the distro for that. Media production, etc.
Something I've noticed going between MacOS (formerly OS X) and Windows over the past 11 years is when I have an issue on Windows the whole system crashes. When I have issues with MacOS, it typically only affects whatever software is having an issue.
I never had too much of a problem with my entire machine crashing on windows. But indeed I can say that overall I have less issues on Mac than PC as far as reliable and ease of use is concerned.
I don’t know what you are talking about. The user experience on Windows isn’t as good but Windows itself doesn’t crash. Your assertion is simply a lie.
When I used Windows I got so used to trouble shooting issues all the time I actually took pride in my "skills". Then I switched to Mac and realized I'd rather just spend more money for a computer that actually just works like it's supposed to.
I'm at this stage right now. I've been trying to buy a new windows laptop recently and i've been plauged with different problems on all of them, usually software related. Great video LTT! (I use this daily) I have both a PC and a Mac and I am always happier working on the Mac (even though I accept that the highly regulated ecosystem limits max power of the computers for better and worse). If I could put Mac OS on a beefy PC build without the nightmare that a hackintosh still is, I would absolutely do that. I wouldn't even mind buying some Apple components to make that happen, but I want more control over the build than Apple currently allows. I'm still using a 2009 MBP and a 2013 Mac Mini Server which I have updated over the years specifically because I don't want to buy one of the new Macs that are so restrictive. Probably because windows has to search through more files that are hidden in a macs search box since they are part of the operating system functioning files. Hence leaving the mac only searching for useful to the user files while windows searches through the whole thing useful to the user or not making windows easier to manipulate.
I am not an expert on the topic, but I think it has something to do with the file system format (macOS uses Apple's proprietary APFS) and with OS cache systems that are optimized for the SSD drives that Apple uses.
From what I know, its because Mac has a designated index database for all your stuff, and its in sync with your daily activity, and shares the same index with your icloud, I caught it working in the backgroud a couple times, maybe 10-15s in session that the you can monitor the process if you pay attention, so when you search stuff, its searching through a tree structured database with weights and models considered to rank relevance, whereas windows literally put all your file names in list and go through it one by one, and spotlight is not only faster, while buildiing the index system it also goes through the contents in your file, so if you have a set of keywords in a pdf file, searching for the keyword would still return the correct file, although its not the name and only appeared once in the file, try it yourself. the thing about mac apps is they are so complete, they're complete packages with designers thinking of every possibility and needs the user might need at some point. And exclusive hardware support makes it possible for them to fine tune it and be sure everything works butter smooth.
I inherited a late 2009 iMac from my uncle when he passed away last year, threw a $30 SSD and upgraded the ram to 12GB and I've been zoom teaching with it through all this.
Unix thing - it's not just about stability. It's about POSIX compatibility (basically it's easy to port a program from Linux/BSD/etc to macOS and vice versa), which brings a lot of console tools used by developers.

@mamamia88 Firstly, if you spec a good Dell XPS or other quality PC vendor with the same hardware as comes on a Mac, you find the prices within 5% of each other. Macs are only more expensive compared to lesser hardware. But to answer your question, here are two situations that you can try in Windows. 1. On a Mac, with Finder (Explorer) open, you can quickly use the cursor to move down a list of files. Hit Spacebar to almost instantly open a "quick look" view of the file - audio, video, pdf, word doc, excel, whatever. Hit up or down arrow to move to the next file, and it immediately changes your quick look to that file. So if you're trying to sift through a folder with a bunch of PDFs and quickly find the one you need, it is really really fast and convenient. There is no Windows alternative that responds quickly at all, not even close. 2. In the sad case where a vendor only shows a receipt in HTML (or if you need to save an email to PDF), you basically only have one option: Print to PDF. On a Mac, this is a two click operation, and it's very fast. On a PC, it is more steps, including having to stop and name the file. There may be software or plugins which can be added to improve that, but it definitely isn't built in. In my case, I spent more than a year on a better specced Dell XPS 15 (compared to my old Macbook Pro), but the day to day performance, and even the Adobe Illustrator and Premiere performance) was better on the Mac.
@@zed9zed I agree with you on most of it, but a Dell XPS is definitely not within 5% of the price of a Macbook. I had to order ten new laptops for my team Europe and was looking at both Macbooks and Dell XPS laptops. The XPS 15 with comparable specifications to the 15-inch Macbook Pro (512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, i7, etc) is about 60% of the price! Besides that, the Dell has a superior keyboard, better support (they'll come to your office the next day), a far superior GPU and a longer battery life. The Macbook does have a slightly better screen though. As the OS isn't a big factor for our work (mostly on-site data crunching), the choice was quite obvious.
@@zed9zed Macs aren't expensive compared to Dell XPS, because the XPS is overpriced too. xD You can easily find a laptop with the same specs as an XPS or Mac for half the price. The only reason to either get an XPS or a Mac is because of their high intensity and color accurate displays. Which brings me to the following: You'd NEVER buy one of those if you AREN'T a professional. And if you use an XPS or Mac for work, there's a 90% chance your company paid for it and has ownership of it. Macs and XPS are very poor choices for consumers and very good choices for professionals (especially considering the software on a Mac). The reason they are overpriced is because companies usually pay for them. And they DEFINITELY don't pay retail.

I've owned a MacBook Pro for five years, finding myself using bootcamp for Windows 10/11 nine out of ten times for: 1. easier multitasking for clerical work (e.g. Word & Chrome side by side with easy taskbar controls); 2. more logical button arrangements & less bugs on Office programs (e.g. the wrapping image functions failed to work on macOS Word); 3. versatility to add-on or third-party programs (e.g. my kyocera printer driver has less functions in its mac version, harder to compile A3 booklet) 4. gaming & customization, of course. The only reason for me to use macOS is Final Cut Pro. Even Photoshop works better on Windows side, to me at least. Besides, Windows touch screen functionality is way better than iPadOS' which doesn't give you a full desktop experience. I'm way happier with my Surface Pro recently than an iPad Air (USB-C). @@brayannexon4613 Just do what I did, re-partition a portion of your drive and reformat it. Then install windows 10 from a USB onto your newly portioned drive. Then install the same boot-camp drivers that you would for windows 7/8. It works just as you'd expect, plus if you decide you don't like it, just format it, then expand your macOS partition for it to return to normal.
Does not work for all macs though. Early 2011 17” works until win 10 1803, update to anything newer than that and you will be greeted by a bluescreen. Speaking as a Windows/Android-user myself, I actually really love hearing Linus play "devil's advocate" with Apple products. Apple *does* have quite a few pros when compared to the competition. It would be extremely naive to ignore them.
sideslick1024 it’s just frustrating because he has never really given Mac OS a chance as an actual Apple user. He still uses it like windows. Like things where he says “air drop is okay and can be forgiven since you can’t get files off with USB”, bro, your shit is on iCloud on every device you don’t need to transfer jack across a cable. That’s old windows/android thinking. You see it on the way show too where he says he needs a cable to transfer stuff from his phone to a laptop with a cable. I would love to see him give it a proper go and not just read a script from not actually using it correctly. edit: Another thing to mention is system migration via time machine (they only mentioned it for backups in this video). You can move to an entirely different system without having to reinstall software or anything and within an hour too. Something you can't do on a Windows based system (before someone chimes in, I know you can get migration software, but for the most part you will have activation issues having to clear your HWID, applications not working correctly, and worst of all, it takes forever and requires third party software and a decent knowledge)

@@SxC97 it does... But last time I heard apple isn't really supporting much on Unix as they use to back then and changes they made breaks some things. It's all up to developers I suppose to continue support
@@Ifalvarado I don't think you understand what I'm saying here. Think of a package manager as an App Store for the command line. MacOS is similar enough to Linux that they can access the same App Store. Windows is so different that command line app developers would have to put extra time into porting their software over. Therefore, there are a lot of command line apps that aren't supported on Windows. Developers like MacOS because they know they have access to all apps in the "App Store".
I think once you integrate Mission Control into your workflow it’s really hard to go back to Windows. You can fly through different windows in virtual desktops so fast. Going back to a single desktop feels really restrictive.
Well, there are multiple windows available in Windows. They‘re just not half as good as in Mac.O.S. (and an average user won‘t even notice they exist).
@@leonjeger88 I’ve been a windows user since 2007, when windows 10 came out I noticed you could do multiple desktops, never found a use to it… Now I’ve been using a Mac for less than 2 months and I cannot go back to working on windows, Mission Control is so intuitive, just like basically anything in macOS
@Anthony Lopes Assuming you mean window snapping, you’re right. That’s because Microsoft has a patent for it. However on Mac it’s just as fast to have two full sized apps and four finger swipe between the two desktops. If you do want them half half on the screen like Windows, then the Magnet app makes that just as easy. I agree it would be nice if that were integrated but overall I still find window management way better on the Mac once you have three or more active apps open.

Being a fanboy of ANYTHING is bad. It's always good to see the pros of different brands. Macs have some super cool things that I wish Windows had.
@Bgkillas Minus majority of game support.

Just looking at it now, for the first time, in this video, makes me jealous! Mine looks like it was forced to exist

That being said, the love-hate relationship I have with the Surface Pro isn't any better.
Can you text an iPhone from a PC? Or simply text an android from a PC oS? I have a vintage 2011 MacBook pro. I can and do text androids from it with ease. one click from my primary iPhone and my 2011 Mac recognizes that and Boom!

Why does it take 5 minutes for windows to search through all my files, but Mac OS is almost instant?
Probably because windows has to search through more files that are hidden in a macs search box since they are part of the operating system functioning files.
Hence leaving the mac only searching for useful to the user files while windows searches through the whole thing useful to the user or not making windows easier to manipulate.
I am not an expert on the topic, but I think it has something to do with the file system format (macOS uses Apple's proprietary APFS) and with OS cache systems that are optimized for the SSD drives that Apple uses.
Try the software "everything"
@Dacia Sandero guys why the insult ? Did you try this software ?

Preview and PDF handling are worth gold when you're doing taxes, gathering receipts, downloading/printing-to-pdf, etc.
Zed Nine More like 30-40% price difference

I've owned a MacBook Pro for five years, finding myself using bootcamp for Windows 10/11 nine out of ten times for:
1. easier multitasking for clerical work (e.g. Word & Chrome side by side with easy taskbar controls);
2. more logical button arrangements & less bugs on Office programs (e.g. the wrapping image functions failed to work on macOS Word);
3. versatility to add-on or third-party programs (e.g. my kyocera printer driver has less functions in its mac version, harder to compile A3 booklet)
4. gaming & customization, of course.
My science friend also enjoys those programs for scientists on his Windows machine.

This is coming from the guy who made Anthony build 3 Hackintoshes in the last year alone
E Kirchman anthony did it because you have to do quite a lot more besides pushing some buttons in your stock os lol
@@xGILOW The point is that Linus didn't mention that hackintosh is a possibility at all.
@@adeelrehman7692 they did by doing it like 3 times but i guess they don't want to call MacOS cool in this video BECAUSE you can kind of crack it onto your "windows" hardware
6:33 I swear a requirement of LTT videos is that he nearly knocks something over in every one...
Speaking as a Windows/Android-user myself, I actually really love hearing Linus play "devil's advocate" with Apple products.
Apple *does* have quite a few pros when compared to the competition. It would be extremely naive to ignore them.
Pain to use 3rd party apps, if you like the apple cock then you are set if not... break out the hoops baby.
sideslick1024 it’s just frustrating because he has never really given Mac OS a chance as an actual Apple user.
@@pedrotski if you like apple's ecosystem and hate tech I guess you are partially correct but only partially.
@@BrianOblivionB Man what is wrong with you? Different strokes. I've been a Windows user my entire life and for the six months I owned a Macbook I'll agree there's nothing quite like it. The hardware is solid, the OS works fluidly, just because it isn't as good at gaming doesn't make it a worse system.
Ripping on Apple stopped being edgy years ago, find something new to be irrationally upset over.

You forgot to cover Automator and Smart Folders! Super underappreciated extremely powerful OS tools.
stevey500 also, proper scaling.
Nobody knows about it... so nobody use it... so Apple remove it in future versions...
@@mostlymessingabout What? No! I use that thing every day! Every time someone needs a simple app for something in MacOS, I just build it with Automator. Batch converting PDFs to PNG? You got it! Creating a list of your files from a certain folder? Here you go. No need to remember keyboard shortcuts, just launch an app and press play.
I use applescript almost everyday for 3D rendering and automate encoding of multiple motion graphics from After Effects, there is simply nothing like it on Windows.
As a developer, macbooks are a heaven-sent.
Lol true
Just explain how, other than developing for iOS
@@Ifalvarado It's based on *NIX/BSD, meaning you can use unix shells (I prefer zsh) instead of windows powershell. And you have access to many linux based packages through home-brew. Personally I use tux + vim + ranger + oh-my-zsh as my development environment and I can just remote ssh into my machine through my iPad, meaning I don't need to carry it with me to work/school.
Recently windows added a unix compatibility mode to their shell but it's just not as good as the native shell in MacOS. Hope this helped.
@@leonjeger88 I’ve been a windows user since 2007, when windows 10 came out I noticed you could do multiple desktops, never found a use to it…
Now I’ve been using a Mac for less than 2 months and I cannot go back to working on windows, Mission Control is so intuitive, just like basically anything in macOS
@@morzee94 Ohh I didn't know about the patent! There are free reliable apps for snapping in Mac too.
