Alex P Keaton and Ellen dancing in the train station. If you are old enough, you know
Right...the sitcom from the 80's Family Ties.
I can’t hear this song without picturing this scene.
Danced at a school function.
Said l love you to each other at the train station.
Yesss!!!!👍👍👍👍
Yes!! Every time I hear it I see them. So cool they are married in real life too
Thank you, Family Ties, for this classic
This song is just a heartbreaker. It's the nice guy finishing last. The guy who even as he's being destroyed says "I'd never hurt you." If this song doesn't make you hurt, you have no empathy.
This song exploded up the charts when it was used in an episode of "Family Ties" [which starred Michael J Fox]...his romantic interest in the show [Tracy Pollan] later became his wife in real life...and they are still married.
I went out and got the album after watching that show and found out that the entire album is just as great!
This song was released in 1981 and didn't get huge until that Family Ties episode in 1985 or '86.
Tracy stuck with MJF to this very day and they are still happily married.
I have the 45 of this song. It was never released on 12".
When I drop this track, the whole room melts.
@@CodeBleu724 It wasn't on an album initially but when the interest in the song went through the roof after being heard on Family Ties, they hastily put out an album of earlier, mainly live, recordings with it on there. As soon as I heard, I got the album and still have it. The album is called "By Request: The Best of Billy and the Beaters" if you want to try to find it. I love every song on it.
@@caroleathenacosta-songwrit9193 thanks for naming the album. Definitely going to try and find it
Watching you from Godley Tx! My Wife of 36 years passed away two years ago but this was one of her very favorite songs, thank you for your reaction! Brings back so many wonderful memories 💖💖💖!!! God Bless you young Lady 💞!!!
This is such a beautiful song! I have always loved it. Brings me to tears every time. ☮️❤️😎
Me too! LOL
Especially if you have lived it in real life....
I can't even listen to this song it makes me too sad. I haven't lived it, but I can feel it deep down in my soul.
It's been a favorite of mine since the 80's - especially this particular performance with all that brass!
Four(!) saxophones for full effect.
Billy Vera and The Beaters. When I was young I used to call this song the SNL song because Saturday Night Live used to open and close their show with the music of this song. I haven't had a TV in better than ten years now so I don't know if the show is still on or if they still use this song ...
Have always loved this beautiful song. Awesome performance. 😊
Sang it sweet Billy.
Born William McCord on 5//28/1944 in Riverside, CA; raised in Westchester County, New York. He wrote hit songs for many pop, R&B and country artists. He was in the movies - Buckaroo Banzai, The Doors, and the HBO movie Baja Oklahoma. He formed "The Beaters" (an R&B=based, 10-piece band) in Los Angeles in 1979. The song originally charted in September 1981, peaking at #79 on Billboard's Top Pop Singles chart. On the chart for 3 weeks. This song re-entered the chart due to play on TV's "Family Ties" starring Michael J. Fox, debuting on November 8, 1986, it went to #1 for 2 weeks on January 24, 1987 for 2 weeks. When I lived in Orlando, FL I saw them in concert at Walt Disney World in 1987.
I remember hearing and loving it when it was first out. One of the early albums released by Rhino Records. The released a lot of old stuff - including the "Have a Nice Day" compilations, a lot of early 70s 1 hit wonders and others who maybe had a couple of hits - but 1 signature hit. quite a few were 45s that I bought as a kid. Rhino has re- released a lot of albums _ I remember getting the Turtles greatest hits. Tommy James had been screwed out of royalties when he was at Roulette (Morris Levy was connected to mob). When Rhino bought the rights - Tommy said Rhino paid the back royalties
Yes. An incredible song that somehow went NOWHERE until somebody rescued it years later. I think most of us have favorite songs that we don't understand why they weren't big hits. We're all lucky this one got a second chance.
Amen brother!@@chrisdutton2975
He also had a hit with Judy Clay in 1967 called “Country Girl, City Man”, that has been uploaded on TH-cam.
This song is so iconic, and it reminds me of all the incredible bands and music we had in LA in the late 70s and early 80s. Billy Vera & the Beaters was definitely part of the scene. Seriously wonderful music, no auto-tune, just real heart and soul.
Great reaction. Great performance of a great song. If you’re going to write a song, write this one. If you’re going to sing a song, sing this one.
Truly blue eyed soul !!
Great song and he definitely sings with Soul
Always appreciate your genuine reactions to these classic tunes!
I’m watching it from Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2023. I remembered back in the early nineties when I would work the night shift and every time it would come on the radio my coworker would call and say “your song is on the radio “ it always brought such big smile to my face and my heart.
Always loved this song.
It’s a great song and vocal performance
This song was released during my sophomore year in high school--and I have LOVED it ever since. What a great tune and searing lyrics! Billy Vera also sang the theme song to "The King of Queens".
I first heard this as a teen while watching "Family Ties" starring Michael J. Fox. It made me cry and still does today.
Tasha, you have a good heart.
I wish you and yours well.
She sure does, that's why I love her reaction videos! 👍🙂
I’ve been waiting for someone to react to this, Tasha. So glad you did it! I love your channel!
Thank you so much!!
Love this song and the Family Ties episodes leading up to Alex playing it on the jukebox!!
I am from New York . I have known billy for years. We worked at the 12/20 club in Hartsdale .i used to be a bouncer there . He wrote that for the show family ties .starring Micheal Keaton . If you can try to listen to My Heart Cries . He also has a star on Hollywood Boulevard . He also was on some t v shows . When he left for California he asked me to go with him and because I was going through a divorce I didn’t want to leave my kid at the time.❤❤❤
"He wrote that for the show family ties." That's not true. He wrote that in 1981, whereas it was used on Family Ties in 1985, essentially re-released for the show. So in other words, it was written and produced 4 years before it was used for the show.
Was #1 in 1987, originally released in 1981, when it only charted at #79.
All of us old farts remember this song from Family Ties, where it really
became popular.
Alex and Ellen at the train station..remember it like it was yesterday.
Love your reactions.
Your husband is a very lucky guy!!!
Glad people are reacting to this song and this singer
The opening notes sound like the beginning of Stand, by Donnie McClurkin. But this came out WAY before McClurkin wrote Stand.
I have always loved this song
I was a confused young woman who couldn’t stay with a beautiful soul of a man, he loved me intensely but it wasn’t right for a few reasons. This song was popular when I left him and I was told this song was effecting him deeply. Then for years every time I heard it I felt him, the loss of this beautiful man,and worse of all the pain I caused him. Shame guilt loss. I hadn’t heard this song in years ,it brought me right back. Hope I don’t hear it again for 30 years ☮️
Your are so sweet and beautiful. Love your emotions to such a powerful song
Love this song.
the '80s will never be matched...so pure
He used to be known as the blue eyed soul. . If you liked that song listen to MY HEART CRIES😊
There's only a few songs that I've sang karaoke to -- this is one of them. I sang it over and again, hoping to bring Julie back to me.
It never happened of course, and today it always makes me break down and cry every time I hear it. Over what could have been -- what should have been😔
I love this song
Man causes pants to fall off, great voice and artist. You have heard his songs, done by others as he’s a prolific song writer. Enjoyed your review 😊
Hello from South Alabama, I just luv your real reactions!! Thank you
WOW 🤩
❤❤❤no words needed
boling tx here awsome song!
"Blue eyed soul" I never heard that term. I love that.
Yep. It was used to describe Tom Jones and other white dudes back in the 60s.
U should hear Billy Bova from the OBG band sing this song
This song has such a Motown feel to me. Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Percy Sledge, Jackie Wilson, Ben E. King, Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie. I could imagine a version by any of those guys.
Lionel Richie had a similar theme with the Commodores...."Sail On".
That is a song about divorce that hits hard.
@@CodeBleu724 Oh I know Sail On. Great song. Lionel Richie is one of the best at pop/ R&B ballads
@@CodeBleu724 also, “Three Times A Lady” falls under that theme I guess, with the opening lyrics. Seems it’s a reminiscent song about an ended relationship.
Billy could flat out sang. 🙂
Thank you pretty lady I forgot this one
This song still absolutely tears me up.
The song and your reaction were great. Thanks
you are great host and I will forward to seeing you again
I used to think the ultimate love song was Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers with Marvin Gaye a very close runner up, but as I've gotten older and went through a divorce (she left me for another man) I've grown to think it would be hard to knock this off my #1 list. I know very well how it feels to lose a soulmate to another and I think until one experiences that emotion in real life, you cannot really "feel" the emotions in this song. When it first happened to me, it ruined me. What really hits hard is when he says he'd subtract 20 years off his life just to hold her again. I'd have GLADLY done the same and if I'm being completely honest, I think I still would. Even 15 years later.
She was never your soulmate, it was just your turn. I went through the same thing. And now at 52 years old, yeah it still kinda hurts, but what the hell can I do but treasure these songs?
I really enjoyed Billy in the Bruce Willis movie, "Blind Date" special.
Tasha, thank you for your reaction on Billy Vera ' At this moment '. I know him from the sixties as an original SOUL singer. He had a big hit with Judy Clay, Story book children. Do not catorise him as Blue Eye SOUL. He is authentic!!!❤
Love you Sis Tasha!
If you grew up with a family member listening to Gospel, Bebe Winans "sampled" the melody and used it in a song called Stand.
Yes!! I knew I heard that music from somewhere!! 😂❤
Beautiful ❤
I have danced to this song back in the day and it was a first dance where I thought for sure that I was going to get Lucy or at least a phone number. Alas neither happened.
Watching from Virginia Beach, Va. Great song,
You never heard of Billy....iam right here
This song was in family ties was Michael j fox
It’s a great song 🤘
Awesome song!
Is love to see you try so many.. The Righteous Brother's You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was actually a bit contact for being extremely sensual with the lyrics not to mention Bobby Hatfield was quite the looker.
Billy Vera and Judy Clay had three minor love song hits as a duo in 1967-68, "Storybook Children" being one. Vera is white; Clay is black. They were not even allowed to touch when performing together, and of course they got nowhere because the world was not ready for that.
Tasha you are the BEST!! ❤
Hello from New Hampshire via Maine
Family ties owns the rights to the song now. (NBC)
Awesome performance
Hi T Marietta GA here
You didn't hear it in a movie. It was in a early 80s TV comedy show called Family Ties starring Michael J. Fox.
I knew you'd like it! 😊Robert
If you're going to be a one hit wonder, this is the hit to have.
You got that right!! LOL
Done! And thank you
T the first time years and years ago.
Hello Illinois
Think ur hubby would like this
Definitely
Could you do something with Journey and Steve Perry's "The Girl Can't Help It"?? That would be so great and in return I'll follow and hit that bell!
To bad Joe Cocker is not alive to cover this.
Whatever the church was, it wasn't southern. He's from California.
