His song was used on the TV show Family Ties and nobody knew who sang it, it was perfect for the scene; it apparently took the switch board down with so many calls from people wanting to know who the singer was.
Totally disagree that it's always the man's fault for not loving her enough, or showering her with affection at all times. There are times when it's the woman that's not capable of staying in love. This songs about a man that fell in love with such a woman. It's an excellent expression of a ripped out heart from a guy that still loves her so much he could never hurt her or wish her harm.
This is one of my all-time favourites. Great tune, lots of soul, heartbreaking lyrics.

OK, the lady is very cute but the dude is a total buzz kill. Billy is singing from the view of a man who was blindsided by the news of a breakup and he doesn't know why? In his mind he thought they were good but he's pleading he can do better by pointing out extremes. The victim of a one sided relationship. She just doesn't love him no more.
