This was a national #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Can you imagine a world where that is possible? A song with meaningful lyrics, simplicity and sung with passion and feeling being the #1 song in the country. Well, I guess I lived it. Not everything was 'better' 40 years ago but.....some other things....definitely.
The saxaphone makes every song better.
Donna recognized in about 2 sec.( And yes dear, we're getting older, be proud of it.)
Billy was the first white back up artist to sing at the Appollo Theatre in Harlem.
It’s a great SAD SAD song, but I love it and Billy’s performance is fantastic, some blue eyed soul
Iconic song used in the tv show, Family Ties. Yes. Billy wrote it earlier but the producers chose this song to highlight Michael J. Fox's romance with Tracy, who played Ellen on the show. They would get married and stay together through thick and thin over 34 years. This was his big hit.
All I could picture listening to the song was Family Ties. Absolutely iconic!
Alex driving to the train station to see Ellen again!
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 Yes. I love that scene.
The alto sax player is Jerry Peterson , an amazing player, I’ve had the good pleasure of playing with him with another group , sadly he passed away a couple years ago 😢
Billy Vera and the Beaters was one of the hottest bands in LA in the late '70s and '80s. This is his signature song, but they were the ultimate party band. He always surrounded himself with awesome musicians. This recording was performed live at The Palomino Club in North Hollywood around 1981
Billy was a very popular club performer here in L.A. and played everywhere in town. In fact, he still plays in town here and there...
Also a fun fact- Billy Vera sang the intro song for the ever popular sitcom King of Queens starring Kevin James and Leah Remini
I didn’t know that but I always thought the voice was familiar! After looking into it more, I saw he also sang the theme for Empty Nest!
This song is from 1981 and he is the One.
That wrote the song about a girl that broke up with him in high school true story
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha well isn't that something. Not good. Very immature. I hope Mr. Vera grew his balls back and moved on ever since then.
Here’s the true story. Yes, it appeared on Family Ties back in the day. I was a Music Director in radio then and thought the song was a hit. After finding out Billy was the artist, I contacted Rhino Records to get a copy and play it on the air.
Amazingly, Rhino had no idea the song was on TV and said they had no copies as the record had gone out of print.
They finally found me one, I played it and got radio to get behind it. It was the first Gold Record I received.
The record sold quite a few copies. Weddings still play it a lot. Billy became a star for a bit and became a regular guest on Johnny Carson.
All because NBC played this song for maybe 20 seconds.
Don't forget Billy's appearance in Buckaroo Bonzi, a great movie.
Great song, brings back certain memories. You ladys never disappoint. BTW nice shirts Kathy and Donna.😁 His band is called The Beaters so the original was by Billy Vera and the Beaters.
Thank you. We love our shirts.
Billy Vera wrote { I really got A feeling } sung by Dolly Parton
the song was utilized on a couple episodes of family ties the television series starring michael j foxx
Don't feel old, Donna. I'm 65 and I still feel young (except when I don't). Billy Vera turns 80 at the end of this month.
You girls were delightful! I also fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. Please read the clip on my site to learn more about the song. GP
My first time on your channel. I really like the idea of 3 generations. Very novel idea.
Thanks and welcome
Family Ties Baby!!!! Alex P Keaton ( the great Michael J Fox)
This song became famous on an episode of the sitcom Family Ties when Michelk J. Fox and his "girlfriend were going to get married. Micheal actually married the woman playing his girlfriend.
I like when you say "i like it"
😃
One of the most awesome song of us old guysl life. I was blown away the first time that I ever heard this song wayback in about 1985. I cried like a baby, I still do!!
Just discovered your channel looking for reactions to this song. Everyone else has already covered this so I would mention check out a channel from The Professor of Rock. He tells the story of many songs over the decades and covers this one pretty well including an interview with Billy who probably is about 80 now. Everyone old enough remembers, everyone old enough cried because it's something almost everyone can identify with.
He actually interviewed Billy Vera.
Blew up after Micheal j fox kissed his girlfriend to it on family ties

You should review Neal McCoy "Then you Can Tell Me Goodbye". Lulu is sure to love Neal McCoy's long, long, LONG hair.
This came out in 1981 and it was an orrigninal somg for him.

A song you may like, Down At Lulu's by Ohio Express
1986!
He first recorded it with Billy and the Beaters.
He was the original singer of this song in 1985 on "Family Ties".
Here's a clip that in the first 1:30 he talks about the song and Family Ties....th-cam.com/video/LO01sRRLKkk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=hznaknRU9RqVejWY
Great song BUT… it’s got the one line about something like “if you’d stay I’d subtract 20 years from my life…” uhhhh, WHAT? 🤔
It makes total sense. He’s saying he would rather live a short life with her than a long life without her.
