I don't even want to know, now, who "stole" from who (but I have a pretty good idea). Both songs are about despair -- "Stand" is about hope; "At This Moment" is about heartbreak. Both are very moving. I think the second song (whichever it is) was inspired by the first, and it doesn't seem to me like a conscious effort to steal anything, but to take something and mold something else out of it. When artists do this, though, I think they should give due credit to the source. The original songwriter shouldn't have to take the second one to court and sue him in order to get that credit, and remuneration, if that's what they want. That's the way I see it, anyway. I can’t find it now but somewhere on the internet there is something about the sampling, perhaps in the TH-cam comments. I didn’t know the song when it first hit, but about 10 years ago the band I was in played it for a few years. I listened to the Billy Vera version a few times to get the sense of it, but most of the other 100 times or so was our band doing it. In the past people did cover other songs, but after their version debuts, it's not as easy any more to say they covered someone else. Like were they going to take a newspaper or magazine ad to say it? Nowadays it's EASY for artists to let the public know when they "stole" from someone else..so many media outlets : youtube comments/twitter/facebook/webpage/interview/etc/etc/ad nauseum...
