This will always be the "Family Ties slow dance song" in my brain. :) As a kid growing up in the 80s I was enthralled with Tracy Polland! lol Jeez...it's a beautiful song. As a kid I was mesmerized by it, as a teenager I thought it was pretty...but as a grown man it brings tears. Thanks for doing this one.

Billy Vera’s “At This Moment” is a song that was made famous on a show called “Family Ties”. Written in ‘77, no one had interest in recording it. A writer for an episode on Family Ties happened into a bar in LA where “Billy and the Beaters” were playing this song. It just so happened that he was looking for a sad song for the end of the show’s ‘85 season and the start of the ‘86 season, and has fate would have it, he accidentally walked right into it. Billy and the Beaters recorded the song in a studio, till then they had only a live recording of the song. Once the show aired it took off on its way up the charts. The song is about a girl he met who described a breakup she’d just gone through. She was so descriptive about it that he went back home that night and wrote this song, but he wrote it from the guys point of view, what he must have been feeling. However, for 9 months he never could come up with an ending to the song. Billy ended up falling in love with that girl who told him the story. She eventually broke up with him and that’s when he was able to finish the song, and it’s most famous line…”I’d subtract 20 years of my life”. It’s weird how life plays out sometimes.

I was 14 years old, and I remember trying to hold back the tears and trying not to blink too hard when this was playing on our little TV. I was a kid, and I knew Alex's heart was breaking, I was going through the same thing a Frosh in HS. It was sad, and the song made it even more heart-wrenching. Having been through it many times since then, that same feeling rises again when I hear the music, and I know now how Alex really felt. Thank you for that insight!

I heard this after I caught my first son's mom in bed with one of my friends and although I am a rather reserved man it gutted me. 6 months later we got back together and 6 months after that it happened again. Yes I loved her with every fiber of my soul but decided the repeated loss was too much, the pain was not worth the ecstasy. A decade later I found my soul again, dated, married and we just celebrated our 35th anniversary. This song will always be part of me because when something guts you it becomes personal.

Nice song and reaction, I have never heard it before, but I like it! It's like a last ditch attempt to get her back, whilst knowing full well that it is well and truly over and that remains is the heartbreak, the sadness and the eventual healing. What a great song.
I know it's odd to say, but my favorite "sad song" is called "Deep Waters" by Incognito a fantastic band from the 90's that are still going today, the singer of "Deep Waters" is Maysa Leak who has a powerful but smooth voice that calls out to you, if you give it a listen, I would strongly recommend listening to the studio version first before the live one, I promise you, it's an amazing song ❤
