How to Fix Your Joy-Con Not Locking | Nintendo Switch Metal Buckle Upgrade

  • I was recommended this fix by Wcanywayz after he heard my complaints of being able to remove my Joy-Con controllers from my Nintendo Switch console without holding the lock button on the back. Mine did not seem as bad as others out there, but it was a big enough problem to be annoying and have them periodically unlock from the system while playing in portable mode. The original plastic buckles on my set of Joy-Con seemed to wear down after regular use of locking and unlocking them from the console. So far the metal buckle replacement has been quite a worthwhile upgrade, I definitely recommend it to anyone who is willing to open up their Joy-Con controllers.

    WARNING: DO NOT BEND THE METAL TAB as seen at 6:13. The tab is a thin metal bracket, you know what happens to thin mental once you bend it up and down at a crease right? it snaps/breaks.
    you need to lift both legs of this tab by applying equal pressure on the underside and lift it all out fully....and then re-inserting the legs back after you replace the latch. there are grooves where the legs slide back in.
    Couple bends on that bracket and it WILL SNAP!

    • @Crits-Crafts
      @Crits-Crafts 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree 110%
      but on the other hand, if it does snap, at least the way he's done it, it'll snap on the side with the screw, so it still wont be lose once the screw is in place

      6:11 in Mario's defence, I personally feel bending it a little upwards like that is easier as if you take the whole thing off, it could either be damaged during the removal or won't fit in flush after re-insertion due to the pressure upon taking it out. I have tried both methods and think Mario's one is better as one side is always the pivot. Just my thoughts.

      @@GFSCN69 Although I agree that the camera angle wasn't close in enough to know that the latch is supposed to be pointing up but if you replay the clip a few times, you will see that this is how it should be - also, regarding lifting the metal plate or not, I still think doing Mario's better is better. 6:11 in Mario's defense, I personally feel bending it a little upwards like that is easier as if you take the whole thing off, it could either be damaged during the removal or won't fit in flush after re-insertion due to the pressure upon taking it out. Someone else here said that was designed as a safety mechanism for when the Switch is dropped. The problem is with enough time they can just pop off with little force.

      @@MrMario2011 Correct. I called Nintendo and their technical staff confirmed this...if you accidental drop your Switch sideways with Joy-Cons facing downward, they are designed flex or even break off allowing come cushioning for the Switch and hence possibly not damaging the Tablet itself.

    1000x thanks my friend, I ordered a fixing kit for my drifting joycon recently and did the remplacement, everything went well BUT when I installed my joycons back on my switch, they were not snaping properly. I fixed the drifting problem but not I was left with a new problem. I found your video and find out iy was only because the buckles were on the wrong side. I am so glad, everything feels like new now! Thanks again!

    • @WcaVR

      it depends on the spring.
      When i replace the latches, i stretch the spring a little and the connection is tighter with the unit when inserted.
      If you think about it, it's the spring strength at play there :)
      If you replace or get someone else too, be sure to mention it.
      Every switch i replace them in have had no wiggle at all.

    • @WcaVR
      @WcaVR 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, you can bend it to fit better (at your own risk).
      Take the stand, and pop it out of the slot.
      (don't worry, it's just latched in and pops back on easy too).
      when you have it off, you want to flex it (bend it),
      Now, you want to flex it the right direction, so if you cant tell, face the inside of the stand towards you and bend the top and bottom towards you.
      Basically by bending it and returning it to the unit, the stand will once again be more plush with it's connection.
      (don't overbend, take your time and test it anytime you need too.)
