This video was simple to follow! Replaced my fan easy with this. Only two parts I had to use other videos for was disconnecting the battery, and reapplying the thermal paste, as I had never done that before. Some voiceover during the last part with the paste would have helped a lot here.
Nevertheless, great video. Thank you so much!

I was worried about this when taking apart my joy con to replace the joystick. But the more you do it, the more confident you get. The biggest part is being careful to do it in a certain order (like following a video like this so you can trace your steps back) and not losing the screws. Always be gentle with ribbons, the cool shiny things that attach important things to the board, but otherwise these types of repairs are easy. Nintendo, to its credit, has made this system relatively easy to repair.

Tristan, thanks a million for this video! I can't believe I suffered listening to my switch loudly grinding away for almost a year when it was this easy to fix! After working up the courage to fix my joycons, doing this seemed within reach. Even better, all of the tools worked for this too. The only part that gave me trouble was reconnecting the SD card. @@snowboarder5873 originally I tried the same things to get the screw out. Rubber band, super glue, etc. I ended up using a dremel to create enough space to stick a different screwdriver into it to unscrew it. You gotta be really precise with it though. I've bee taking things and consoles apart by myself for a while but honestly the ingeniousity of the switch is something else. Not unlike its form factor... which I still think it's a great revolution for gaming. On-the-go and at-home gaming all in one is GENIUS. No wonder their teardown is so tightly packed and forward thinking. This kind of engineering makes me think I should have went to college for this instead lol.

    Thanks! It worked. My evaluation:
My problem: High Pitch Fan Noise, started undocked, then still loud when docked.
I found this video. I ordered the parts from Amazon (your description links). I have Amazon prime. So $14.99 (Prime) + $33 (New Fan, Thermal Paste, Screwdriver Set). I had to buy the sets because the individual screwdriver, thermal paste, and fan are sold out. Prime delivered to me the next day (Within 16 hours of purchase) I followed the tutorial here.
The result: I played my switch for an hour after replacing the fan and it’s silent. The fan is working, no loud noises so far.

Thanks for the video! I was able to swap out the fan. I had some difficulties and some tips afterwards.
#1 - Don't skimp on tools!!! I bought a fan replacement kit with a Y screwdriver and a phillips screwdriver included. The Y screwdriver didn't work at all, and the phillips screwdriver messed two screws up. The screws turned, but would not get out. Bought another toolset for 10 bucks. Using that, I was able to get all screws except those two phillips ones out. Had to pull on the backplate hard to create friction, which allowed me in conjuction with screwdrivers to get those buggers out.
#2 Be CAREFUL (!!) with the SD card reader! I thought it was difficult to put the SD card in, but as it turns out, I must've bent the sd card readers' pins. Only noticed that later. After ordering a new one (got two for 5 bucks each), it didn't take two seconds to plug it back in.
Again, thanks for the video! Those problems weren't caused by your video, but by improper tools and whatever happend to that SD Card reader, no idea how I messed that up.
If u wanna replace your switch fan - make sure to take more time than 20 minutes, and use proper tools, can't stress that enough!

@@TristanPope At a cost of hundreds of dollars, even just 100, I'd rather just upgrade to an OLED and keep my original as a backup. I'm really holding out for a more powerful Switch; the next gen Switch or the long rumored Switch Pro. With the NVIDIA leaks showing some upgraded technology in regards to NVN2 I think it's very likely there will be a new console announced sometime between now and the end of 2023. I think Nintendo is going to have to keep a close eye on the market with the Steam Deck out and other handheld competitors biting into the hybrid handheld console niche to figure out the strategy for their next console. While I'd love something as powerful as the Steam Deck I do not think Nintendo's next console will even be close to that powerful. Valve really set a high mark to beat beyond the technology and with their pricing which is expensive yet for the tech is very fair imo. Nintendo is going to Nintendo though so you never really know.
I'm going to get a microfiber clothe and make a plastic mold lined with it on the inside to act as a drop on dust cover for when the Switch is off to at least slow down the rate dust accumulates with the fan naturally from sitting in the dock.
