  • Just bought this Mossberg Maverick 88 about a week ago and wanted to show it off and tell you a little bit about it ... It handles really nicely and has the same solid reliability as any of my Mossberg 500's ... I paid $189.99 For this shotgun , brand new in the box..

I own both also. I bought a 1983 Mossberg 500 from a pawn shop. It wasn't in nice condition. I brought it home and strip cleaned it and sanded and re-blued the barrel and mag tube. Put a new safety on it and she looks brand new! I have owned several 88's and they are great shotguns for the money! I never had one let me down...not once! Now I want a 590 but they are no where to be found in 2020. Make more guns Mossberg!!!!

Great video. My opinion on the mag capacity is this, if I can't get it done with five I don't need to worry about 8. Good firearms, very inexpensive and reliable.

I hear they a lot. Catchy phrase. But one thing I'd point out is that bad guys often travel in packs. Very safe than sorry. I noticed the side saddle to carry more shells. Imagine 8+1, plus the side saddle on the stock or Velcro on the side of the revenue. Receiver. Instead of 5 or 6, you get at least 14-15. Much better than just 5 in case you're not dealing with just a single threat.
      Good video though!!

    • @KingDeuceDroppa
      @KingDeuceDroppa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

My opinion on mag capacity is this, if I can’t get it done with 5, then one of the next three should do it. I also use my shotgun for recreation, not just self defense or hunting, so the more capacity the better.

I ran a Maverick 88 (20” 7+1) through a Shotgun course right out of the box. Over 200 rounds the first day, straight from the cardboard box and not a single problem. It patterned a little to the left past 20 yards, but I wasn’t the only one. One participant had a Benelli M1014, a couple 590’s and 870’s, and my Mav didn’t flinch at all. I have since put a light, sling and shell holder on it, and it’ll do anything I need it to.

I was going to buy the 20 inch until I found the tube wouldn't fit any other barrel SO I got the 18.5 5 +1 A friend gave me a 28 inch barrel.

I am on a strict budget but wanted a shotgun for home defense and just recreational shooting. A friend told me about the 88 so I went down to the local gun store and picked one up. I paid just under $200.00. I have never regretted the purchase. This little shotgun (18 inch barrel) eats any load I put in it. It fit my budget and it is reliable.

great video, really liked the slow motion stuff. I've been carrying a maverick 88 in the truck for about 6 years and it's seen a ton of use and never had a problem. I do wanna say that there are 88s with removable forearms though because mine has one and I've seen 2 others in pawn shops. The removable ones look a little different than the ribbed forearm like yours. Not sure why mossberg did that on some of them but they are out there

Love this shotgun. It is sad though, Mossberg customer service does not support this firearm. I have been waiting three years for a 18.5 inch barrel. Mossberg says " out of stock ". Come on...three years !!!

Thanks for the review! Lots of videos on how to change the forend. You need to buy a Mossberg 500 action slide tube.

Thanks Matt Jones ! I May try that out soon . The forend doesn't bother me too bad but I would prefer a little better one. I guess I shouldn't complain so much for $199.99 LOL. Thanks for watching and providing the information , have a great day.

BlockShawOutdoors No problem. Just watch a video or 2 on how to do it. Only downside is they cost 40-50 bucks. Which may or may not be a downside. Anyhow take it easy!

Please do a comparison of the 88 and the Turkish-made, Hatsan Escort 'Slugger'. Both are low-priced, pump shotguns.

thanks for commenting +Irv Drake! I personally like anything from #4 shot to maybe #1 buckshot for inside the home , and I keep a couple of 00 bucks on the shotgun in case I need them . of course if you can run 00 buck all the time then that would be great as well but the only problem is buckshot in general and especially large buck like 00 and 000 goes through a lot of sheetrock and wood . And I know everyone has their own opinion on what to use and obviously it will depend mostly on if people live and where in the house with you . I hope this helps and thanks for watching, have a great day

Try reversing the holster shells for faster reload ...pushing down instead of pulling up...

I Bought a leather shell holder for the butt stock of my Maverick 88. Laces up at the very bottom and keeps the shell holder in place it doesn't slide at all. it's around $30 on eBay.

I have a question for anybody about kick. I’m not really much of a shotgun guy, infrequent sporting clays or trap. Just for giggles, I swapped out my Mav 88 barrel with an 18 1/2 inch barrel. In the past I’ve been able to shoot this gun all day long for sporting clays and such. But I’ve never shot this with buckshot. Then, I found that if I ever did need this in a nighttime defense situation, the LOP could to catch on clothing if I pulled it up quickly. So I decided to swap out the butt stock with a shorter Houge. I also put a nice little light on the end, and figured I was good to go. So, I finally got a chance to shoot some buckshot. Very painful! By shell number 7 or 8, I was flinching and bruised. I’m 60, 5’10”, 180, not a lot of upper body muscle. Any advice or tips or experience you can share with me?

Can you change the barrel and tube out to make it a 91?
