The Mav 88 is absolutely hands down without a doubt the best el'cheapO 12 gauge pump shotgun in the (world)🌎 now I know that's a bold statement but buy one throw one in your truck car rtv atv boat or whatever use it every time you need a shotgun for about two or three years and you won't believe how tough these bad boys really are. Happy shooting my friends.
Bought my 88 about two years ago, put it through hell, never let me down.
I love my M88, fired over 2,000 rounds through it and still looks and cycles as if it was brand new. They are the best shotguns out there for $200. It could have a price tag of $500 and It would be believable and it feels like it.

+Pilot Patriot the 20 inch version capacity is 7+1 "IF" your feeding her 3inch shells. But its 8+1 for 2 3/4 inch shells. I notice most people even you utube gun review guys fail to mention that fact.

Last week but the maverick 88 cruiser and swapped out the pistol grip for a mossberg stock, exactly the same as video gun, looks no different to this security, I bought the shotgun due to ammo shortages, shotgun shells are plenty, very pleased with my purchase at $236. Subbed.

I ended up getting the field model of the Maverick 88 and buying an extra security barrel. That way I have both hunting and defense with one gun.
These are great budget shotguns, i own this same model, the 20" barrel and it has shot whatever i put through it with no jams at all. So far got 150rds through it. Got mine for $215 shipped no tax from an out of state vendor.
I will vouch for the Maverick 88.

The Maverick 88 is a great budget shotgun had mine since February no problems at all added a shell holder on the butt stock and a flashlight and she's ready to go

6 years later, and they're around 250... But still the best deal going on a shotgun... I have 5 of them. Not because I need them all but because when I see one cheap, I buy it. All mine were used but one, but they all shoot great.
I bought the rifle sight 24” slug barrel model a few years back. I just ordered a magpul stock set and a 500 action tube. Going to be my hunting shotgun.

I get it good point. However, if you plan too add a optic then you want too go 500 already drilled and taped. Other option would be a new haven 600at you can find them used for around 150ish
Btw, this gun holds 8+1 so a total of 9rds of 2 3/4 shells just fyi. I've used this for dove hunting also and snagged a few just to see if it's capable, good ol' #8 birdshot. Not just for home defense. Plan on using it for deer hunting and gonna run some Rifled Slugs through it to see how she does too.
Of course you can bird hunt with this gun if you have no other option! The great thing about a shotgun is that it has many uses. But this gun is defiantly not ideal for bird hunting, the 9 shot capacity becomes pointless since it's illegal to dove/duck hunt with a gun that holds more than 3 shells at a time, you will need a pretty long plug to make that work! Also a 20in barrel is a little short for bird hunting, ideally you'll want something in the 24-28in range. Mossberg does make the Maverick in longer barreled versions for hunting. But yes, the gun can be used for hunting if it's all you have!

agreed, it's my only gun for now so i make it work for any situation lol. I will eventually get a 28" barrel for it when i have another $100 to throw into it. and if you hunt on private land theres no restrictions on how many you can load up, but yes normal regulations for my area are only 3 rounds :)
+C Michael Not true, all I hunt is private land!! The 3 round limit is a federal law and applies ANYWHERE you hunt migratory game birds!

+C Michael Haha! Good luck telling that to the Game Warden! For anyone else reading this...federal law is enforceable no matter who's property you are on! obey the law when you're hunting...it's just not worth the hassle.

Love my Maverick 88. Actually spent more money on accessories than what I paid for the gun. Put a Tacstar sidesaddle that holds 6 shells on the side, a heat shield, and a Blackhawk recoil reducing stock with a pistol grip, and another soft shell sleeve on the stock as well....had 12 shelves on the gun plus 7 more in it. More than adequate for home defense

@@PilotPatriot looks like we had a similar build. Your gun is nice for sure. I wanted a tactical shotgun but thought itd be more fun to build it myself, and I'm glad I did.
No home defense weapon should just sit and collect dust, train train train!!
This one does!!! That way I always know it's gonna be there when I need it!! What happens if I'm at the range shooting with it but my wife is home and needs it to stop an intruder but the gun isn't there???? This one stays put and I train with a second one ;-)
Mossberg 88's are nice, but I prefer the IAC Hawk or H&R Pardner Pump at this price point ($200 or less). The Hawk and the Pardner Pump are both Remington 870 copies, made by Norinco (same Chinese company that makes the SKS). Hawks and Pardner Pumps accept every 870 accessory, except the barrels.

I shoot left-handed. It’s a little inconvenient not having the thumb safety on top, but for the value you get with this gun, it’s worth spending a little extra time practicing. Love the Maverick 88.

I want this but I'm actually not into the tacti-cool and prefer the old school look. How hard is it to change out the synthetic with some nice wood furniture and if I planned on doing so would it be cheaper to just pay the extra for a 500 with wood furniture already on it?
Don't forget the trigger housing is made of aluminum.

Apparently if you drop your 88 from even a low height the lifter can get displaced.
Will this use those mini shotgun shells?
I can't say for sure because I havnt tried it personally, but I assume it will, most Mossberg pump shotguns will shot them.

Great shotgun. Terrible customer service. Poor customer support from Mossberg. They refuse to supply parts and accessories. They claim "out of stock". They have been claiming this for three years.

No no no, don't put baby in the corner,,, I take mine with me every time out on the rang. Me son has one, we shoot clay's with em. Very fun times.
Don't be fooled thinking you NEED the 8 shot model. I had a 500 in 8 shot and it weighed a TON. A longer barrel and 2 more shots shots really don't add up to a lot in the long run. big point is no matter what you end up getting, it works the best as is from the box. You don't need to add a bunch of crap that gets in the way, hinders use or will break rendering the gun useless. K.I.S.S.

But I'm a duck hunter, ive carried much larger shotguns with up to 30+ rounds of additional ammo and 20lb of extra kit through thickets, swamps, marshes, and chest high water and mud......I don't think a 20" shotgun from one side of my house to the other will be an issue! Thanks though, I just think your advise is a little misguided! Keep it simple is definatly sound advise, and adding accessories just for the sake of adding accessories makes no since , however accessories that serve a purpose (flashlight, sling, etc) are always a good idea and having extra ammo is almost never a bad thing!
I just purchased a mossberg maverick 88 it came with 2 barrels and i was told that i cant shoot slugs out of it. Is that true?
That depends on what barrels it came with! The owner's manual should tell you anything you need to know!

No, the security version of the Maverick is not good for dove! BUT Mossberg does make versions with longer barrels that would make great dove guns!!
