Couple tips and tricks for these shotguns: 1. The Maverick 88 is literally nothing more than a Mossberg 500 with a crossbolt safety instead of a tang safety. Subsequently, all Mossberg 500 aftermarket parts will work with this gun, including barrels. Do note that the foreend is pinned to the bars instead of a seperate part on a slide tube like the 500, so ordering a seperate Mossberg 500 slide tube assembly is needed in order to use aftermarket foreends. 2. It's possible to unload this shotgun without cycling the action over and over again; simply pressing the left side shell latch will release the shells and allow you to remove them, and once that's done, you press the action bar and pull the action back to extract the remaining chambered round. 3. The magazine tube can be replaced very easily, as it's only threaded in place with thread locker (This is also how you can get extended tubes; the 20 inch barrel + 8 round tube assembly can be purchased seperately and replace the standard 5 round magazine/barrel assembly).
Loved that you demonstrated safety by cycling a shell every time you engage the slide, it's like teaching through video the importance of trigger discipline and safety checks!! Great work!!
I've owned probably 8 of these in different variants currently still own 3 they're the best bang for your buck of any gun whenever they hit 180 bucks I buy 1 because I know they will do just fine sitting in the safe and are a perfect add on when trading in a gun for another.
We designed the OPSol Flex Adapter on a Mav 88. That particular gun was probably dry racked over 20,000 times during the development. Still working today. Most of the internals "bits" that you showed are interchangeable with any other 500 based Mossberg, including the Shockwave. With our adapter in place, you can load 8 or 9 minishells in the tube of that particular 88 model. Sam,e for barrel/tube combos.
0:47 What you will receive in terms of sling swivel studs or no studs at all really seems to be luck-of-the-draw. The photos on the Mossberg site (today 1/18/2024) show mostly molded-on swivel studs (part of the plastic stock) like what you have but many Mavericks come with proper steel swivel studs front & rear and sometimes nothing except a flat spot for the stud and an empty threaded hole on the magazine cap/takedown screw. I learned that the Mavericks with the molded-on "studs" have a cheaper mostly hollow butt-stock and they cannot be drilled in the normal way for a proper swivel stud because there's not enough material there. I think you can work around that by using a nut to secure the stud from the inside. The flat spot stocks or those with factory installed studs feel like solid wood when you tap them with your knuckles. Behind the butt pad, they are only hollow in a narrow channel for the long screwdriver you use for disassembly.

Nice review, thank you. You deliver pertinent, useful information in a direct fashion. You obviously know your way around firearms. I just subscribed, keep up your yeoman efforts. Podcasts are NOT easy to produce.
Something I do and will always like about the shotgun. Besides the fact it’s a USA made shotgun among these millions of Turkish made guns that are swarming the markets (no not all Turkish firearms are bad, I’m just patriotic), the shotgun pump rides with dual sliding bars. I’ve had shotguns with single sliding bars and the pump itself always felt wobbly and felt like if the shotgun fell to the ground or if i wrongly smacked the shotgun against something that the pump would fall off. I realize if you planned on changing the pump portion of the gun it would require basically a new assembly, but the dual sliding bars makes it awesome and even more durable than single rides. I didn’t buy this shotgun to turn around and spend another $100 trying to customize it. The point of this gun being cheap is well it being cheap. This is my home defense and bug out gun along with my AR and handgun. I’ve got the shotgun sitting across the room in front of my plate carrier and delta helmet ready to go. I bought it with shells for a total of $280 brand new, and I mean you can’t go wrong with Mossberg. It’s a very very good company, “they’ll make turds better than shit”. Like if they manufactured guns only worth $100, they’d still make it where it’d work to its full potential. I’ve never had an issue with Mossberg and I’m always going to be a fan of their Shockwave, 88, and 500’s.
The dual action bars are something Mossberg "stole" from Remington in the 1970s after the patents expired. You say "cheap" but I say "underpriced" to take back profits they were losing from other cheap shotguns in the marketplace. A lot of these competitively priced shotguns are in fact Turkish made with Winchester and Savage Stevens logos on them, to name a few.
I recently picked up a Mossberg Maverick 88 (Security-Folder) with 18.5" barrel at the local gun store for $290. Then jumped onto eBay and picked up a full stock w/metal sling swivel and 24" Accu-Choke barrel for another $150. At some point I'm looking to add the 24" slug barrel with rifle sights. These things are the Transformers of the shotgun world!

1:50 the entire reason I used these over Remington. I used a Remington from a friend for a bit and I kept getting my thumb jammed on the lifter when reloading shells. Edit I want a company that has good customer service and quality control. Remingtons are still good shotguns too.
I got the combo set with both barrels for $350 at Canadian Tire last year. No issues, quite happy with it. I made a couple small additions. 1) I bought a small rear sling mount plate that fits between the stock and receiver 2) I bought a front sling mount that screws onto itself between the barrel and mag tube 3) I bought the Houge overmoulded 12" lop stock - which is a fantastic addition to any shotgun if you are a stocky fellow like myself or looking for something a bit more tactical without looking like it Honestly you could use this as your only shotgun and you realistically would never need to replace it. That said, if I was doing it again I would probably spend the extra for a 500 so I could get the higher mag capacity. However, grabbing that two barrel set is hard to pass up. $350 and I got a duck gun and a "tactical" short shotgun in one package.

Recently bought the combo maverick 88 package, love the shotgun. Will admit the first 3 or 4 shells out of the box the pump was still and not smooth. But by the end of the first tube, it seemed to polish its self up. Love the fact that alot of the extra bits out there that fit the fancier 500 series will also fit the 88.
I wanted to put a longer barrel on my chainsaw 500 but the shell tube has a different screw type same as a shock wave. Was wondering if they made a longer barrel for that type of bottom tube
I have a Maverick 88, it's a good gun. Only suggestion, don't fire more than 3-4 boxes (75-100 shells) through it fast, otherwise the action will start to seize and you will have to mortar it.
Well that's a terrible statement. Maybe there is something wrong with yours? OTOH I am not sure WHY I would want to fire off 75-100 shells fast--it really cannot be done because you take a decent pause when reloading; it's not like slapping in a fresh magazine.
There's a great big difference in the price on a Browning and a Mossberg 88 so I would not even compare the two i use to own a Mossberg model 500 that had a plug in it and it held three rounds when I remove the plug the shotgun held eight rounds and that's pretty good if you want the extra capacity you just got to pay for it
Just got mine. First time shooting it, it already struggles to release the shells from the pump action chamber, I have to put my finger in and press the rod that holds the shells in place. And after a few shots fired, one of the used shells would not discharge from the barrel afterwards. Is this common? Do you know what can be done to improve this?
OMFG When you talked about that waterfowl limiter in the bottom tube, a light bulb went off for me! Trying to get the 5 shells in and couldn’t put in more than two, I thought I was going insane!! Did they sell me the wrong gun?!? What’s happening?!?! Thank you for pointing that out!
I just got this shotgun and yes, works great! However I have issue with aiming with those 2 front sights. I press my cheek to the barrel, line them both up, put it on the target and the slugs all go really low on the target, bottom right, with tight grouping about 3inch group, at 25meters range. Any advise would be highly appreciated, thanks :)
At least it is shooting a consistent group, that counts for something. Try DIFFERENT slug shells. different weight slugs, different shell brands. You really have to find the ammo that your particular gun likes--to reinforce my point I'd recommend the Paul Harrell channel. He does painstaking comparisons between ammo and different guns and his shotgun series is just phenomenal. Totally no B.S. like other clickbait channels.
@@loadedwraps7630 On the upgrades? So far the choke has been upgraded. After looking around and pricing some items , like shorter barrel replacement and slide to accept Magpul pump forearm. It actually is better to just pick up a defensive Maverick instead ( $199-$250 ). And leave the 28" barreled 88 as it came. For hunting purposes and have a dedicated defensive 88 for other duties.
best to buy the combo, if you want for home defense and dont hunt, sell long barrel and you will have less $ in security model(5+1 18.5" not 7+1 20") and vice versa. 😎 must be movie prop, never runs dry.😜
Hey Nicky, I'm looking for the same 28"/8 combo. Any luck? I should have bougth the combo version, but no regrets with the MAV 88 20' Sec. It's serve me well. It's because my local Skeet/Clay range now requires min 24", no pistol gripes or tactical add ons.
Thanks for the review, it's very thorough for this novice :) You mention it's among the best of the cheapest, what are your other recommendations ? I was looking at the Hatsans but can't find many reviews on the pumps, mostly semis. I checked through your videos, no reviews either, any opinion on them ?
Damn. Bought one when they first came out. Slide only had *one* pump actuator rod and no way of putting a second one on. No slot in the receiver. Very wobbly with a PG forend. 🙁Aftermarket Choate Mossberg 500 PG stock fitted on without any adjustments, same as better forend. The PG forend was way to loose to stroke fast. Aircraft alloy receiver and nylon trigger group made it light and durable, certainly no rust 😆🇭🇲Laws changed and long gone.
Hi I bought one of these and I notice a bit of a wiggle on the barrel when screwed in. I can rotate the barrel left and right slightly, does yours do this as well?
Unbelievable that video is 2 years old and still generates some views and comments. I liked, especially disassemble/assemble parts. I own M88 combo kit which I need to clean for first time. Thank you. Btw, did you use an adapter with minishells?
Since the overall purpose of any firearm is that it consistently fires a projectile down range and hits its target, and since Mossberg does this as good as any $2000.00 gun, I would suggest you can stop your whining over how 'cheap' this gun is by sending Mossberg an extra $500.00 and then it will automatically be a 'quality' gun, I've had one of these 88's for years and I would put it up against any of your 'quality' guns anytime !!
Hold on...you are saying the choke is removable?!?! As a person just learning about shotguns I had the impression that one of the main reasons why you might want to upgrade to a more expensive shotgun than a Maverick 88 is because you would have choke flexibility. If there's no need then that's important info that I have not see anywhere else!
@@Huntinggearguy Okay that must be it. There are so many reviews of the self defense version that show it with a fixed choke. And I couldn't tell on their website. Maybe they would rather I got a more expensive model :). Thanks for the in depth breakdown of the 88!
Can someone please explain to me why you need the plug for waterfowl hunting? I know it’s the law but it makes zero sense to me like who does that law protect??
@@judas5305 Exactly. Back before measures taken by the Fish & Game dept, hunters had decimated the waterfowl population due to overhunting. There were basically no waterfowl left.

Well that's a terrible statement. Maybe there is something wrong with yours? OTOH I am not sure WHY I would want to fire off 75-100 shells fast--it really cannot be done because you take a decent pause when reloading; it's not like slapping in a fresh magazine.
Very helpful video ,Thanks
There's a great big difference in the price on a Browning and a Mossberg 88 so I would not even compare the two i use to own a Mossberg model 500 that had a plug in it and it held three rounds when I remove the plug the shotgun held eight rounds and that's pretty good if you want the extra capacity you just got to pay for it
Just bought two of these at Academy for $190 each.
When will they be in stock?
@@brandonboswell3048 When he doesn't beat you to Academy and buy two at a time!
Hey just brought mine and have the same problem we’re you able to manage to put 5?
That's why you read the instruction manual first. Waterfowl limiter? It's called a plug. It's legal to shoot some waterfowl with an unplugged gun.
Good for turkey hunting?
where can I buy a 28" barrel in Canada?
I just pic one today, Thanks for your information 🙏
I have one with the 28" barrel like this one. Could I swap a 18" barrel on it?
Man you really love pumping those dummy rounds out of that gun! Hahahaaa! Good video
Just wondered into my first 88 for $150. Already looking at spending money on upgrades 😆.
Thank you for your thoughts on the 88
What did you get?
@@loadedwraps7630 On the upgrades? So far the choke has been upgraded.
After looking around and pricing some items , like shorter barrel replacement and slide to accept Magpul pump forearm. It actually is better to just pick up a defensive Maverick instead ( $199-$250 ). And leave the 28" barreled 88 as it came. For hunting purposes and have a dedicated defensive 88 for other duties.
Would the barrel on this be interchangeable with an old mossberg Lakefield 500ab?
best to buy the combo, if you want for home defense and dont hunt, sell long barrel and you will have less $ in security model(5+1 18.5" not 7+1 20") and vice versa. 😎
must be movie prop, never runs dry.😜
Excellent sir!
Thank you for This video helped out a lot!!
can I shoot rifled slugs 2 3/4 with the choke that comes in? Thanks
For the mini shells did that work with factory parts or did you modify the shotgun to take those shells?
No mods
Nice thank you and thanks for the video really helpful for a new person to shotguns like me!
Does anyone know if the 28" barrel will work with the 7+1 round version of the Maverick 88? All I see are the barrels for 6-shot
@@albertt.6051 it was discontinued - better off buying a new combo set
Don’t think so. 20” isn’t interchangeable. Nice though.
Thanks for the review, it's very thorough for this novice :) You mention it's among the best of the cheapest, what are your other recommendations ? I was looking at the Hatsans but can't find many reviews on the pumps, mostly semis. I checked through your videos, no reviews either, any opinion on them ?
Dickinson makes a good fairly cheap gun . Not the prettiest gun but unless your getting it to hang on a hall it’ll do it’s purpose.
@@timwalker991 Never heard of them, will look them up, thanks
Very informational
Will it mess the gun up if you shoot slugs out of the factory choke it comes with?
With just a regular foster-style slug, it'll be fine. I shoot slugs out of my Browning A5 with the mod or IC choke all the time.
Is it fine to leave the mod choke in for defense rounds like 00 buck? Also are slugs okay with that choke?
Generally, yes to both. You can run lead buckshot and foster style slugs through mod chokes.
Hello, can you explain how you added 8 bullets inside the store at the end of the video?
They're minishells. Challenger and Federal both make minis.
Been looking for a 18.5 barrel online and they are all out of stock..
If you're in Canada, they've got them at Tenda
It's an amazing shotgun man.
Big five has some, i just bought one in Tustin Ca. They have one left
check your academy sports online
For the price of a new barrel, might as well add an extra hundred bucks and get the security model 88 and then you won't have to switch barrels.
Where can I get a long barrel for my Maverick 88
Excellent review. With the recent changes in Canada, do you have to turn the Maverick into the Government?
Short answer is no. Posted on July 24, 2023
Can you install a mag tube extension on a Maverick 88?
Nope
Hi I bought one of these and I notice a bit of a wiggle on the barrel when screwed in. I can rotate the barrel left and right slightly, does yours do this as well?
Only if you really reef on it. Check to make sure the barrel and forend are seated properly, then tighten the nut.
2:00 “ribbed for your pleasure”
Damn slogan on the back of birth control 💀
Unbelievable that video is 2 years old and still generates some views and comments. I liked, especially disassemble/assemble parts. I own M88 combo kit which I need to clean for first time. Thank you. Btw, did you use an adapter with minishells?
Glad the video helped. No adapter with the minishells, they just worked.
Well done video. Thanks.
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for doing such an awesome job!
Is there a link to the longer barrel?
someone likes racking thier shotgun :D
Yeah my Maverick 88 has an 18in barrel
Hold on...you are saying the choke is removable?!?! As a person just learning about shotguns I had the impression that one of the main reasons why you might want to upgrade to a more expensive shotgun than a Maverick 88 is because you would have choke flexibility. If there's no need then that's important info that I have not see anywhere else!
The 18" barrel has a fixed choke, while the 28 has an interchangeable one. I go interchangeable everytime.
@@Huntinggearguy Okay that must be it. There are so many reviews of the self defense version that show it with a fixed choke. And I couldn't tell on their website. Maybe they would rather I got a more expensive model :). Thanks for the in depth breakdown of the 88!
Can you shoot slugs with the longer barrel?
Lawyer answer: check with the manual/manufacturer. That said, I shoot slugs through IC and Mod chokes all the time.
@@Huntinggearguy thank you man
Great shotgun!
00:33 LOLOL!!
You're just looking for comments on that one aren't you?!? :-D
I had fun keeping it loaded up with dummy shells and racking them out all over the place.
@@Huntinggearguy nothing more satisfying lol
Спасибо. Отличный обзор.
Mine tells me what choke it has on the barrel you don’t have to take it out✌️
You know you can safely unload all the ammo without cycling the action just depress the catch that holds the shells in the tube.
Yes but that is not nearly as fun
Thought there would be at least 50 more shells! XD
Can someone please explain to me why you need the plug for waterfowl hunting? I know it’s the law but it makes zero sense to me like who does that law protect??
Makes it more sporting so you won't shoot so many birds in one go, forces you to aim a bit more maybe?
The birds 😉
@@judas5305 Exactly. Back before measures taken by the Fish & Game dept, hunters had decimated the waterfowl population due to overhunting. There were basically no waterfowl left.
my maverick 88 broke after 20 rounds of target load. now fails to pull a round out from the mag and feed it in the chamber. i sold it to the store so they could fix and resell it. i am unhappy with the mossberg products i have had. but thats just my opinion. im sure there are people out there that have good experience with mossberg.
Nothing is perfect. They are a bit junky but you clearly got a bad one. You should easily get 10,000 bird loads out of that gun without broken parts. Just bad luck.
Keep in mind I’m an 870 guy myself.
Mine was ok but the slide was rough.. Get a Remington 870 and you will be happier but it does costs much more.
@@patrickrafferty9156 or a Moss 500 or 590. I personally prefer the 870, but the ergonomics of the Moss are technically better.
@@patrickrafferty9156 I love my 870 worth the extra money
mossberg 500 all the way
Can I shoot slugs out of it?
Man that break down of the mossberg 88 looks exactly like the 500,, the trigger group and bolts,,,, ive got a 500 and 535,,, i almost wanna order the 88 jus for the hell of it, too treat it like crap and be a lending gun,,, jk on the crap part,,,
Mesmerizing video! Well done!
Just brought it new for $200 on sale.
Does anyone use this gun for goose hunting?
Mine took a shit on me and broke after one shot. Had to send it for repair. Pretty disappointed actually after hearing all the good reviews
Which part broke?
Seems either the firing pin or the spring. If i pressed the bolt spring all the way the firing pin still wouldnt pop out enough to strike the primer
lol emptied it to look it over 😂 but still loaded with more
