How about an old hammer shotgun? Something a manor gamekeeper or a farmer would have had here in England over a century ago? “Get orrrff my laaand!”

I have the hunting version of the 887. The bolt opens when you fire a shot even though it has a locking bolt that's supposed to keep the bolt forward until you pump it. Remington said that was normal, but I know it's not. It would be like your ar bolt opening on just blowback before any gas made it into the gas tube.
They discontinued the 887 after only a few years because of several quality issues, and a safety recall where the firing pin would get stuck forward and it would slam fire when closing the bolt.
I've taken a few ducks, and a turkey with mine. It was the cheapest 3.5 inch 12 gauge on the market when I bought it.

Going through a door is not the point unless your assailant is standing in front of a door and you are worried about passing through the target AND the door behind them. Primary gun safety is “always be sure of your target “ therefore shooting through a wall or door to hit a target on the other side, is irresponsible at best and criminal negligence at worst. What Scott did an excellent job of proving is that over penetration is a genuine hazard in any typical home defensive situation. Additionally most states require that you be in imminent danger and fear for your life….try convincing a jury of that if you shot through the door or wall without being able to clearly identify your intended target.

I have several guns laying around in different locations for home defence. My go to is my Remington Model 870 Wingmaster chambered in 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge that I converted into a combat shot gun. It's loaded with deer slugs. It has a rifled bore, so most shot shells are out of the question. My dad always said that the best home defence round for a shotgun is bird shot. In most home invasion scenarios you are only going to be a few feet away from the target. At close to point blank range, getting hit with bird shot is a death penalty. It's going to turn whatever is on the receiving end to mincemeat.

Since so many houses are insulated with spray foam, you should do a test with that too. Closed Cell spray foam is the more dense of the 2 types. I think it would make for a cool test. I run a spray foam company and can provide you with the test sections if you’d like.

Great video Scott. It reminds me when I was a Sales Associate with a now defunct Sporting Goods store chain. We ( firearms sales associates) had a lot of guys come in and try to get their female friends to get a 10 gauge 3.5 inch shotgun for them. Note a lot were Small in frame , think twig 90 pounds dripping wet. We would first hand them a 12 Gauge Remington, or Benelli auto loader a lot could not work the action or even hold it in the ready for more than a few seconds. So we suggest a pump. 410 shot gun. The guy usually has a attitude that she Needs a 8 GAUGE 4inch shell, or 500 S&W or a Godzilla 9000 for home defense. We ask to try a little test. We have the guy turn around while whe unlock two shotguns ,normally a .410 and 12 gauge. If possible the same model type just different gauges. Then we hand the person a shot gun and ask them to briskly work the action, repeat with the other. Nine times out of ten the guy was not able to tell it was most of the time the .410 shotgun that the person was working with was the most efficient . Our loading suggestion was first round birdshot. #2and 3 00 buck shot, then lead slugs then lastly Barnes solid copper slugs. Our reasoning behind this is ...One the sound of the slide being wracked and a shell should stop most. Two if you had to fire the birdshot because of the other person's actions, it could be said that one only applied force to stop the attack. Three if they(offender) keep going toward you the threat to your personage is increased , so is the appropriate level of protection. So after the first round all bets are off, and you have to protect yourself and those in your domicile. What I am trying to say that penatration is good, however, a firearm that one shot a kiju, however Is not controllable, does no one any good. I had several people who Had to get the hand cannon or shoulder mounted howitzer, later come back and tell us that we were right. We always told the customer that it was better to be able to at 10 meters to hit the 10X ring with a smaller caliber with all the rounds , rather miss and not be able to get back on target because of excessive recoil. I quess it all a balancing act in what the shooter feels is an acceptable trade off. It be great if you did a video on that . Small stature folks (youths, ) skinny to Average, size with various degrees of shooting skills.

True slugs can penatrate walls. However If your attacker is not getting the hell out of dodge after you telling them that you have called 911, you wracking of the action and first round and getting to a safe spot. They are not your "buddy or freind", so all bets are off. However a good shooter is aware of what lies beyond their intended target. As with any firearm use they are risks, by using that loading, God forbid you have to actually injure , maim. or un alive your attacker. You have a better chance of a no bill on a shooting inquiry. As someone who has been twice in a active shooter situation , and once having to stop a "meth headed theif" .. Sometimes the brown matter hits the fan and you need to be on the less soiled list. It All comes down to a simple idea... Know your firearm. Its strengths and weaknesses. Train with your firearm often. Hone your muscle memory. Know your limitations of you and your terrain.
