The entire sequence of D.B. Sweeney exploring the UFO after being abducted in Fire in the Sky. From waking up in that cocoon thing to being experimented on, this for me is hands down the scariest thing I’ve ever seen since I first saw it when I was ten or eleven years old.
Ben Gardeners head popping out the boat in Jaws scared the hell out of me as a kid, definitely up there with the Exorcist 3 in terms of great jumpscares
In no particular order: 1. Arachnophobia--the spider shower scene 2. Exorcist--during the priest's dream about his mom--the moment when the demon appears & then is gone 3. Insidious--red demon scene 4. 1980 When a Stranger Calls opening scene 5. The twins in The Shining 6. When Katie is pulled out of her bed & down the hall in Paranormal Activity 2009
Do you remember the movie trailer for Arachnophobia? It initially made it look like a wacky comedy, complete with crappy one-liners and upbeat circus-like music. It was one of the most deceitful trailers in existence, and you can probably find it on youtube.
I think it's weird that Cody considers Paranormal Activity to be a "garbage franchise." I found several of the films to be good and there were some terrifying moments.
One of my scariest movie moments, even though I don’t love the movie, is the end of The Strangers. When the couple asks the strangers why they’re targeting them, and the only reply they get is “because you were home.” That thought is just terrifying to me. Being preyed on in the place where you’re supposed to feel most safe, simply because you were there at the “wrong time.”
Scariest scene in any horror movie ever for me is by far (spoilers) when the dad is revealed to be a puppet and his new wife is possessed by the town ghost in the movie Dead Silence. That plus the fact that the main character breaks the movies main rule and gives into his fear after outlasting the ghost the whole story terrified me. Couldn't sleep for weeks after watching that as a kid haha.
13:37 I think the thing that makes hospitals creepy is that depending on what's wrong with someone they might die in there so hospitals are quite often associated with death. I've always hated the smell of plasters in hospitals. How warm they are makes you feel sleepy too.
I would add aged care facilities to that. I work in one as a nurse and during the day, its fine, but working a night shift, especially in the secure dementia wing? That can lead to some cases of the willies. Nothing has actually HAPPENED of course, but sometimes you just get those feelings.
awesome list cody and the quint speech is quite possibly one of the most iconic speeches in any movie ever made.one of my favorite scary moments was the reveal at the end of frailty when matthew mconauhey reveals that powers booth has been talking to fenton meeks the whole time classic stuff and any of pennywise's lines from the 1990 it are iconic.
The Shining is the scariest movie for me. "HEEEEEEERE'S JOHNNY!!!" "Come and play with us, Danny, forever and ever and ever." Those moments alone are extremely unnerving. It's creepy now to walk in a long hallway in a hotel when I'm alone.
Right!, those two scenes are great!. The twins scared the s*** out of me as a kid, especially what they said. And Jack's "here's Johnny" line/scene was equally funny and scary, which is just an amazing moment in film. Also, Jack talking to ghosts bartender is my second-favorite dialogue scene OAT
^this Kubrick has forever scarred me & my relationship with old, empty hotel rooms. Actually now that i think about, most of the time the hotels are pretty modern! Being alone walking thru a quiet hotel hallway NO. THANK YOU. 👍
The lawn mower jumpscare in Sinister scared the shit out of me, or any of the tapes in Sinister, but also possibly Annie's possession in Hereditary, or Charlie's death in Hereditary, the craziest part is that I had already seen Charlie and the lawn mower scene before the movie
I personally think that the opening to the original When A Stranger Calls is scarier than the opening to Scream. Good to see it mentioned it freaked me the hell out when I saw it as a kid👍
I think part of the reason Zelda is so effective is when you see the scene your eye doesn't know where to go you look at the bed and it isn't til a couple secs later the voice is coming from the crumpled figure in the lower part of the frame where it's basically her head twisted around and when you do realize it that is when the lump in the throat gets VERY pronounced!
Hospitals and schools are utterly terrifying. I used to go to the same school my dad taught at, and sometimes he’d stay late, so we’d end up leaving when nobody was in the building. All of the lights were off besides the exit signs. Now that was terrifying to walk through lol
The end scene from Blair Witch Project is one that scared the shit out of me ! I remember coming home from the theater unlocking my door as fast as I could while looking over my shoulder !
12:12 You showing the clips just goes to show that the opening of when a stranger calls is not only scary but is right up there with the opening of scream. And Scream scared the crap out of me to where I had only watched a third of the movie, but to be fair, I was 8 or 10 and I was a scaredy cat. Also, am I the only one who thinks the score during this part is something you would possibly hear in a Fantasia movie?
14:33 spot on with E3, maybe it is the best jumo scare ever. Its also because of the music stab, they used a very unstable set of notes that made a unharmonic sound plus a pitch slide down. This is advance music theory being used to unsettle the listener. Everything about that scene works.
I pestered Lee at DrumDums until he finally watched and reviewed E3. And sir you are BOTH correct, the jump scare in that hospital is the greatest EVER!!
These are scenes that mostly scared me as a kid: 1. When Georgie meets Pennywise 2. The Jackal from Thirteen Ghosts 3. The claustrophobia tunnel scene from The Descent 4. Mary Shaw's origin scene
I found the Gemini Killer's rant about how Karras is trapped with him and that he'll make him watch him kill people using Karras's own body pretty scary in Exorcist III.
Personally I've always kinda thought the lawnmower scene from sinister and the basement scene from the conjuring when the hanging feet turn around were unsettling to me at least
What is amazing about Shaw's speech is that he is going full ad lib! Speaking Alien, that moment at the end of the first movie when Ripley is in the escape pod and you think the movie is over, then the xenomorph slowly comes out of the wall behind her, scares me every time.
Hell yes hospitals are creepy! When I was a kid I had strept throat sitting in a hospital waiting room. My mom had gone to the restroom, and Wes Cravens New Nightmare hospital scene was on the TV!
One of my scariest movie moments was actually in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. While the movie itself is more comedic than frightening, I think it has one of the best jump scares in horror history. The entire scene where Stretch first meets Chop-Top in her studio and nervously tries to get him to leave only for Leatherface to pop out of the record room with his chainsaw scared the crap out of me. "Dog will hunt" indeed. Another great one is in Friday the 13th Part 2 where Jason bursts through the window and grabs Ginny. The fake-out with Muffin actually fooled me into thinking nothing was going to happen, so you can imagine my surprise when an unmasked Jason suddenly crashes through the small window behind Ginny in slow motion. Honestly, I think this jump scare is on par with Jason popping out of the water at the end of the first film. I even re-watched Parts 1 and 2 recently with my sister (who is also a big horror fan) and those scenes actually made her scream out loud. God, I love the classics.
Both scenes you just mentioned are classic jump scares that scared the shit out of me my first viewing. The set-up to those scares was brilliant. Perfect 👍 examples!
A bunch of people have already mentioned it, but I also have to give a spotlight to the “The Strangers” when the masked man appears behind the woman. I respect that scen so much because there’s no jump scare, no loud sudden noise, no blood or gore. Just unsettling imagery and great framing/ camera work 👏🏼🙌🏼
The window scenes in "Salem's Lot" really scared me as a kid. Actually, that movie is loaded with scary/creepy scenes: the hospital morgue scene, the cemetery scene, the rocking chair scene, etc.
I gave your video a like before even watching the whole thing, simply because your intro is short and sweet lol Seems like other channels are making their intros longer and longer.
Bathtub lady in The Shining...sheer disgust, and revolting terror ranks up there, as well as Freddy's long arm, slow walk reveal...Omen 2 Raven vs. Reporter rank up there for me, but these are all great moments. Enjoy your perspectives, and keep up the awesome work.
TCM remake scared the hell out of me when I first saw it. IDK why?, I've seen the original. But man...best theater experience ever, until endgame of course.✌❤😁great vid Cody 🤘and thank you for showing exorcist 3 some love. Quite possibly the greatest Psychological horror film ever.
That’s interesting. Did NOT know Zelda was portrayed by a man. Wow. Learn something new everyday. And yes, Zelda creeped me the hell out too. Iconic character.
I'm surprised the scene with Maureen Prescott scratching the window in Scream 3 never makes any of these lists. That had the same affect on me as a child that Zelda did on you. Both Zelda and the scene with Tina in a body bag scene in Nightmare on Elm Street both creeped me out in the same way as well!
The wedding dress ghost scene in the movie The Others absolutely terrified me the first time i saw it. Chilling movie with a great twist ending as well.
I can definitely recommend the When a Stranger Calls 2006 remake! The entire movie is suspenseful. It doesn’t just blow its entire load in the beginning like the original
Best part of the Babadook scene you picked you didn't mention. After the door opens the damn thing just creeps in and slips into the darkness of the corner. That part alone is wonderfully terrifying. The rest of the scene doesn't live up to that amazing setup
Two from the Exorsist, the famous "lick me" scene. That whole scene to this day is hard for me to watch and the crucifix deal in that scene, and the spider walk scene where Linda Blair runs down the stairs and spits out blood. One that's not The Exorsist. The graveyard scene from It. The music makes that movie. I did see an Exorcist reboot in 2021 is coming, great video.
The crucifix scene from beginning to end is sheer chaos. The shot leading up to the room is so effective in setting up the most terrifying in any movie ever. The camera leading you up the stairs and into a screaming girls room, opening the door to find a girls possessions flying across the room, her masturbating with a crucifix, yelling obscenities, demanding her mother to lick her, smacking her mother across the face sending her flying (this is where Ellen Burnstyn got hurt in real life), the dresser being moved telepathically moved across the floor, and then of course her head turning around 180 degrees to imply that Reagan killed Dennings….jeez that scene is a whirlwind. More happens in that scene than in most movies I can think of. The movie literally changes. It goes from “I dunno, could be anything” to “K, this kid is definitely housing a demon in her”. You feel the fear and helplessness in the parent, feel (some) characters realize that there’s no doubt this girl is possessed, and leave that scene as drained as the mother. This is the most terrifying and mentally destructive scene ever caught on film. You actually question the sanity of the writer, director, and ratings board. How did this movie ever get a green light with an R rating? I’m not sure, but I’m glad it did because this scene is terrifying and effective in selling what it happening. I love Jaws and all but sorry, a bunch of guys talking about a shark attack on a boat doesn’t hold a candle.
Yes you did come up with a pretty damn good top ten. Nice to see Jaws get a mention here; Quint’s speech is one of my favorite parts of the movie too, but if I were to put a moment from Jaws on a list like this it would probably be the two guys laying out the bait for the shark. Completely agreed on Aliens: that part is, by far, the scariest in the movie (and possibly the whole series, although I like the original film a little more than this). Very pleased to see you’re in the pro-Babadook camp; it’s may not be my favorite horror movie of the last decade (that would be It Follows), but it is probably the scariest. Hard to pick a single moment from it, but your choice is a good one. No surprise at all that the Scream opening made it on here; if anything, I expected it to come in higher. Agreed on the ankle-breaking being scarier than amputation in Misery; that’s probably the best part in the movie, though if I were to pick a ‘scariest’ moment it would probably be when James Caan is moving around the house and Kathy Bates is on her way home. Also agreed on When a Stranger Calls: the opening is good but the rest of the film is not. However, I’d choose a few parts of Black Christmas over this: any of the phone calls, the killer’s screaming fit in the attic or Olivia Hussey’s finding the corpses. Am a little surprised that nothing from that film made it on here. Have never seen the reconstructed version of Exorcist III but am curious about it; can’t bring up a better jumpscare because there probably isn’t one! If I’m looking at the original film, the crucifix scene would probably be the most disturbing/sickest (I wonder if that could make it into an R-rated movie now?), but I don’t know if it really qualifies for a ‘scariest’ list. Although I love The Thing almost as much as you do, the blood test scene wouldn’t make my list - maybe because I didn’t see the film until I was in my early 20s, after I’d already heard about this part and had seen it parodied. Admittedly that’s not the film’s fault, but there we go. My favorite part from the film would be the defibrillation scene. No real surprise on your top choice; that is probably the creepiest part of the film, but I’ve never loved it (or the movie as a whole) as much as you do - maybe if I’d been younger when I first saw it. The opening of the original Suspiria would probably make a list of mine, though if I were to pick a single ‘moment’ from that film it would be Casini’s re-animated body walking through the door. Her death would also be in the running. I already mentioned Black Christmas, which has a few contenders for all-time scariest moments - that film, along with Suspiria, might earn the title of ‘scariest horror movie’ from me, although not the title of ‘best.’ Black Christmas' Billy also earns the title of scariest horror villain, and by a wide margin. The final confrontation in the dark from The Silence of the Lambs would also rank high, as would a few moments in the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I’m a little surprised that nothing from the remake made this list, considering that you’ve called that film your scariest theater experience. I seem to like supernatural horror films (particularly Japanese ones) a little more than you do; Marebito, the original Ju-On, the original Ring, and of course Audition all have bits that would be in the running for me. Not sure if you’ve seen Audition, but since it’s different from the usual 1990s/2000s J-horror (no ghosts) you might like that one. Am looking forward to seeing what you think of the original Exorcist, and am also looking forward to seeing you rip apart the sequel. I wonder if that will see a breaking of the pattern from your other 31 on 31 rankings?
The beginning of "Final Destination 2" (log truck/freeway pileup). A couple of scenes from "Ghost Story" with Alice Krige. Quite a bit of "Body Parts" w/Jeff Fahey and Brad Dourif. I remember the DVD art was the killer walking along, silhouetted against a fire, carrying two dismembered legs. That pretty much sums up the film!
To add on to your awesome Babadook choice, a sequence in the film which also gave me the willies was the sequence involving the news report. You know the one.
Supernatural horror is the only horror that actually scares me, but as for slashers, Black Christmas is easily the scariest slasher movie I’ve ever seen. Billy’s phone calls are just so effective and disturbing that I actually had to take a break after watching it just because of how great it is that it took me back a little 😂😂
The one that gets me is in the "Exorcism of Emily Rose" When her boyfriend wakes up, the camera is at the foot of the bed, eye level. Then he sits up, looks past the camera, and then Emily is there, all contorted and Staring at him!! Aaaahhh 🤯
This is a good list. A huge YES for the beginning of When a Stranger Calls. It might be my scariest movie moment ever. It places you right in the scene!. You want to just teleport yourself out of the room, but you don't want to move because you feel like he's going to jump out and stab you or something!. Also, the Quint monologue scene is my favorite (dialog) movie scene of all time, followed by Jack Torrance talking to ghost bartender
One scene that scared the shit out of my 10 year old self was in house on haunted hill... when the woman is walking around with the video camera and she sees the ghosts in the operating theatre, then they just look up at her... never watched it since.. I’m 32 now lol
Very cool list. Of course, what actually scares each individual may be one of the most subjective topics in entertainment. My list is quite a bit different than yours, but Zelda is definitely in my top 3 moments. That character haunted me for weeks after seeing the film.
Dude such a good list Cody, I forgot how eerie that scene from babadook was and also remembered there’s a scene in there where once the mothers possessed she’s chasing her son and starts banging her head on the door and it’s very reminiscent of the scene in hereditary when the mother gets possessed, starts chasing her son and starts banging her head on the attic door. Babadook did it first obviously but just something I noticed now. Love your content.
I'll always remember the scene in The Strangers where the man with the bag mask reveals he's in the house by just quietly stepping into frame in the background as he just watches the main girl and then walks back into the shadows. So good!
The one that really got in my head was the first Pazuzu face flash in the Exorcist. The way Regan was laid back and staring into what could only be the spiraling void and then you catch the glance of the demon’s humanoid face. It was the very reason I was afraid of the dark for 10 solid years.
A scary moment for me is the scene in the bedroom of “darkness falls” in the beginning when the tooth fairy is making all those screeching noises, also the basement scene in Dead Silence with young Henry use to scare me
My top 15 scariest horror movie moments: 15. A family dinner (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) 14. Crawling out of the tv (The Ring) 13. Tina's death (A nightmare on elm street) 12. Zelda (Pet Cemetary) 11. Georgy's death (It) (1990/2017) 10. The reverse bear trap (Saw 3-D) 9. A hand from the grave (Carrie) 8. The hobbling scene (Misery) 7. Jason jumps out of the water (Friday the 13th) 6. The opening (Halloween) 5. The preacher being stung by bee's (Amnitiville horror) 4. The ending (Sleepaway camp) 3. Jesus wept (Hellraiser) 2. Here's Johnny (The Shining) 1. Dinner scene (Alien)
The hobbling scene in Misery might actually be the only time I've winced and had to turn away while watching a movie...and this is coming from a huge gore hound.
@@skyofthelivingdead Maybe it's because fake blood is often so over the top that it just comes off as entertaining to me. This is probably why slasher and torture films never disturbed me. Broken bones, however, just seem much more...realistic.
Zelda scared the shit out of me too. one of the only parts in any film that i fast forwarded as a kid. Zelda and Murphy getting shot to hell in the original robocop.
I always found the opening scene from Halloween scary, the close ups and one shot style of it all, the blue light from the moon, the eerie music but most of all not understanding why whats happening is happening and the sound effects of judith being stabbed while at the same time not showing much, the first time i saw it i wasn't expecting michael to be a kid and the stone cold expression on michaels face while his parents see him just gave me chills

The calls in blackchristmas and the chooke scene is creepy as shit, just the house and the christmas setting is chilling to the bone!
And the ending where the sedated Jess is in the house but Billy's still in there and goes "Agnes it's me Billy" creeped me out.
My number 1 is easily Scream, glad it’s on this list Cody. Also the face huggers from Aliens is indeed terrifying.
My number 1 is the movie ghost, where those devils come out the floor and take them away! The noises they make chills me to the core.........
lol! That is what I would expect hell to sound like.
awesome list cody and the quint speech is quite possibly one of the most iconic speeches in any movie ever made.one of my favorite scary moments was the reveal at the end of frailty when matthew mconauhey reveals that powers booth has been talking to fenton meeks the whole time classic stuff and any of pennywise's lines from the 1990 it are iconic.
The Shining is the scariest movie for me.
"HEEEEEEERE'S JOHNNY!!!"
"Come and play with us, Danny, forever and ever and ever."
Those moments alone are extremely unnerving.
@@eastbaymauiboy Oh, I forgot "REDRUM" too.
^this
Kubrick has forever scarred me & my relationship with old, empty hotel rooms. Actually now that i think about, most of the time the hotels are pretty modern! Being alone walking thru a quiet hotel hallway NO. THANK YOU. 👍
For me, the original Black Christmas would be up there. The scene where the killer is talking from behind the door. So chilling!
Misery was definitely not Kathy Bates' first role. She had been acting for 20 years prior to that film.
it was her first leading role
@@meltyboys946 Yeah, but thats not what Cody said.
Hunter dean exactly
The subway scene and the hospital scene in the original Jacob’s Ladder are both excellent in creating an unsettling and disturbing atmosphere.
The end chase scene in halloween as she pounds on the door and he is slowly walking across the street. Also Samara in the Ring coming out of the tv.
Hey Cody, just wanted to say I love your content and keep up the great work!😁
The Muholland drive dumpster jumps are was very well executed and also the Baghul attic jumps are from Sinister got me really good.
These are scenes that mostly scared me as a kid:
1. When Georgie meets Pennywise
2. The Jackal from Thirteen Ghosts
3. The claustrophobia tunnel scene from The Descent
4. Mary Shaw's origin scene
Same here! I completely forgot about how much Mary Shaw scared me 😭
When we see Billy's eyeball in the original Black Christmas.
I found the Gemini Killer's rant about how Karras is trapped with him and that he'll make him watch him kill people using Karras's own body pretty scary in Exorcist III.
Exorcist 3 is an awesome movie. Always wanted to read the book. I've read The Exorcist that's a really good book and really scary
I love Exorcist 3, two of my fav actors George C Scott and Brad Dourif. The beginning is creepy and moody with the empty street scene.
The final scene in Dark Knight Of The Scarecrow ... it's not scary per say, but it caught me off guard when I was a kid.
The movie Shutter. The end of the movie when the protagonist accidentally takes a picture of himself. Nuff said
Hell yes hospitals are creepy!
The scene in Conjuring where the girl sees the ghost, but the audience doesn't.. My closet was left open and I was terrified all night
I gave your video a like before even watching the whole thing, simply because your intro is short and sweet lol
Seems like other channels are making their intros longer and longer.
Off to a good start. Definitely agree with number 10. Just watched Jaws the other day for the first time in quite a while actually.
I can't wait for your Exorcist franchise reviews.
The TCM remake is awesome!
Never get out of bed again!!!! God damn that movie. STILL to this day nothing beats it
The scene with the kid on the bike from In the Mouth of Madness is one of the best.
That kid grew up to kill most of the Jedi order - including the younglings!
The scene in Evil Dead 2013, where Deadite Mia lurks through the trapdoor gave me Nightmares.
Fun watch Cody and yea knowing you said that awhile ago made this even a more fun watch for the wife and I. Thanks to your Patrons for the idea :).
I remember going to see The Exorcist 3 in the theater with my mom. And that scene came out. Damn that was scary. A few people actually left the movie
Probably left due to boredom. That scene is the only good part
@@ilistenwell You ain't kidding, there were times that I almost fell asleep throughout the movie. 😴😴
When the clown attacks the kid in the original Poltergeist.
That’s what I said lol
When Zelda flips around in/up bed and her arms are just dangling there....OH GOD NO!
I can see you getting into the millions of subs. You have a good voice for this and are like-able tbh.
Thank you
Cody Leach yep.
The other one I almost picked was the husband in the basement. "You can bring me the boy..."
Zelda and the old man from the Poltergeist 2 will always be the scariest movie characters to me. They still scare the shit out of me to this day lol
I can’t say I would add any of these to my personal top 10 but I found this quite enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing!
The Babudook scene you showed when the door opens and we hear that voice gave me the chills, and yet I never seen it.
Im so glad you mentioned Jaws. Thats one of my favorite movies of all time. That movie traumatized me as a child.
A scary moment for me is the scene in the bedroom of “darkness falls” in the beginning when the tooth fairy is making all those screeching noises, also the basement scene in Dead Silence with young Henry use to scare me
MY GOD THANK YOU!!! I was looking for someone to say this about darkness falls! I agree 100%
I couldn’t watch the scene from terifyer
@@pauls3147 Haven't watched the movie yet, but I know what scene you're talking about.
I’m the same. I’m a huge gore hound, but broken bones make me squeamish.
@@skyofthelivingdead Maybe it's because fake blood is often so over the top that it just comes off as entertaining to me. This is probably why slasher and torture films never disturbed me. Broken bones, however, just seem much more...realistic.
Joshua Nelson yes, I think it’s the lack of blood and the unnatural bend. Feet ain’t supposed to go that way 😂
Zelda scared the shit out of me too. one of the only parts in any film that i fast forwarded as a kid.
