@@WhipCityWrencherYea looks like the ol Motorcraft Classic String Tie off... For a 1979 engine and it's tolerances of the day, Kmart worked just fine... But today's basic type of " filtering media is far superior, even at it's shorter lengths... Great Video!!!

K Mart filter is an old old Purolator filter. Back when I was in college back in 1980 I used to cut open all my used oil filters. I had a 1974 Ford Pinto Station Wagon and I alternated between that K Mart filter, Lee and what ever National Auto had on sale. Sure K Mart had that filter for $1.97 but National Auto had Lee on sale for $1.67. I used what ever house brand oil was on sale. It was usually just a rebadged Valvoline oil.

Although the K-Mart oil filter had more light shining through the filtering media, It's application was made for engines that called for thicker oils. Thicker oils would force the filter [engine] into by-pass mode sooner than today's oil, stopping the filtering of oil anyway.
That "springy-round thing" that you found was to keep that flimsy rubber anti-drainback valve in place. Today's valves are thicker, using custom molded rubber eliminating that thin "springy-round thing".
Also those engines had much more blowby and carbon deposits in their oil, caused by carburetors and looser engine manufacturing tolerances.

Back in the 1970's, oil change intervals were 2,00 miles...3,000 miles .....different technology with carburetors......conventional oils, etc. Cars did not have computer controlled ignition and fuel injection under computer management, Cars had steering and suspension parts that had to be serviced and greased with a grease gun. Some had grease zerks on the drive shaft.

Back in the day, I likely used a K Mart oil filter. They used to have a good selection and b&m WalMart stores not common. I can't decode date code but going say made by Champ Labs or second Purolator. I think the extra metal collar on KM serves as extra backing for the thin poorly formed nitrile adbv, to keep inlets covered on shut down. Up until they closed KM used to have selection of Purolator P1 filters. Yeah, CL XL wins, but different era filters. Thanks to Scotty for the filter, and you Whip for the vid.

Great Job Pete!. Despite its age, it is still a pretty nice filter. the welding issues aside it has no excess glue and the components seem to be pretty nice. Probably a typical cellulose media. No question of what I would use today, but it is nice to see what an old one that I would probably use back then looks like.

Good video. I used to buy those K Mart filters on occasion for my 1974 AMC Hornet with the 232 cu. in six cylinder. It took 10W-40 or 10w-30 oil. When I used to cut those open with a hacksaw I noticed they were very similar to a Purolator with the string around the filter media. They were probably made by Purolator. I have an old Lee filter from the 1970's still in the box. Maybe you would like to cut it open.

That Kmart is very, very old Purolator from the mid to late '70's era when they were still operating out of NJ. Kmart also contracted for a 'Dual' stage filter they sold around that same time from Lee/Lee Eliminators I believe (also made in NJ). I think it was the 'KD' line. Same as the Lee Maxi Filter. Purolator has had so many owners and moved physically so many times the filters now are nothing like they used to be. They finally landed in Fayetteville under Facet. I have a Pure One from the Mid '90's that says 'Mark IV' with a Tulsa address. That particular filter (your Kmart) was made 5-6 owners back. Give or take 1. I had some Purolator air filters with that same date coding from the '70's.

In the late 1970s there was no domestic oil sold in the United States that was synthetic. And a lot of our oils were still from Pennsylvania wells and refineries.
The molecules of synthetic oil are all the same size and a lot smaller than the molecules of non-synthetic oil. Therefore this Kmart oil filter wouldn't be compatible (in other words perform well) with synthetic oils today. It was good for non-synthetic oil engines back in their day. And I would run it before I'd run any Fram oil filter on absolutely ANYTHING!

Kmart was my main source of oil and filters from 1980 something to maybe ten years ago. I can tell by the face plate that was a Purolator filter, they were the only ones that covered the whole base plate with sheet metal. I think the Purolator branded ones probably had better quality. What happened to $3.00 Purolator filters? Well I guess if you don’t mind them painted red they are now only $7.00 at Tractor Supply. 😄

Guessing the Amsoil filters they also produce have the same problem, but I'd need to re-check one of your old Amsoil filter reviews to be sure. Disappointing because the VP Racing & Amsoil filters are marketed as high-end long-interval filters.

@@WhipCityWrencher When I was a teenager [early 80's] I bought all I could find of the equivalent FL1-A oil filters: Kmart, Fram, Wix, Motorcraft, and Delco then cut them apart. The Motorcraft back then had a cotton fiber blend filter media which was better than most of the rest. It looked white, not yellow. I probably still saved the "Ford Shop Tips" magazine that showed that to me.
And the Fram had cardboard ends on the filter media then. They have not changed to this day. I don't trust cardboard under high pressure situations. They can blow up. That has been known to be the culprit for destroying the variable cam phasers, control solenoids, and other such parts in an engine on Fords. Is it possible the K Mart filter paper had dried and degraded a bit over time causing the pattern that showed microscopic spaces?

Anti drain back valves should not be needed on filters that mount filter down. Maybe the rubber serves as a baffle to spread the oil flow to the filter element? An interesting note is on Subaru's that mount filter up I have noticed that oil drains out in a short time. Not much of an anti drain back. Maybe if it is leak back is slowed down, debris won't be pulled off the filter?

I think that Champ filter is actually made by Fram.

Made by Champion Labs, Champ Labs for short. Beside the construction type, says it on the box.

@@RicArmstrong Nope. First Brands (formerly Trico) acquired Fram filters and later Champion Labs.in separate purchases. As accurately noted, topic filter made by Champion Labs, stamped spring is one of many clues. In lower tier Champ Labs made filters it also serves as "clicker type" bypass. Only Champ Labs uses that design, not Fram.

I dunno... I'd feel like a CHUMP driving around with a Kmart oil filter on. I'd have saved-up my allowance, and splurged for the Fram.

If you don't know what is K-Mart, you missed out on some good times in old 20th century America.
They were a discount department store and competed with the likes of Sears and Montgomery Wards. Back when America was a actually a rich country and not the indebted mess that we've become.
