I’ve had sensitive, reactive skin my whole life (had eczema as a baby) along with several random allergies. My core four are the cetaphil gentle cleanser, aveeno daily moisturizing face cream, beauty of joseon sunscreen, and CeraVe healing ointment! I can’t handle tretinoin or most exfoliants but I’ve recently had luck with the neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair retinol (fragrance free version) & the Paula’s choice 6% mandelic acid + 2% lactic acid exfoliant. Hugs and good luck to all my fellow sensi skin pals out there!🫶🏻
@@gorlgoyle Yes I use four products from Stratia. Their barrier repair moisturizer (Lipid Gold), retinol(Night Shift), peptide moisturizer(Interface), and AHA(Soft Touch) are so gentle. I have been using them for like 4 years now.
I strongly recommend La Roche-posay and EltaMD for sensitive skin. I have 7 different skin allergies and when I have a question or a reaction to a product, I can call those companies and speak to an actual staff member who will address my concerns …promptly at that! Totally underrated!
Thanks for mentioning the over exfoliation. People sometimes don't realize that just washing their face with the fingers is a type of physical exfoliation.
Niacinamide seems to be touted as a great soother to the skin but I cannot tolerate it at all, in any percentage. I used Cetaphil soap for many years and couldn't figure out why my face developed a horrible case of contact dermatitis. I finally figured out that they changed their formulation and added niacinamide
THIS!! Niacinamide started really irritating my skin and I see it everywhere in “calming” products. and even Cetaphil/CeraVe/La Roche Posay products don’t universally work for everyone…those brands have always irritated my skin. I think with sensitive skin you really need to just check ingredients and see how your skin responds.

Same here niacinamide and silicones are the ingredients that I avoid at all cost in my moisturizers. It took years for me to figure it out because niacinamide is the "it" girl for skincare I tried to force the issue.
I have sensitive skin and my skin seems to get sensitized to niacinamide only when my skin barrier is compromised, such as when I’ve used my prescription retinoid (struggling to tolerate it). Then every product besides water burns but only until they dry.
I spent yeeeeeeears trying to find a moisturizer that didn't sting or make me redder. Even the ones designed for extra sensitive would be problematic. Finally tried Avene's Tolerance cream and balm and my skin felt so soothed! Finally no stinging or redness!
Yes to paring down the number of products! When I eliminated serums, masks and multiple moisturizers, my rosacea-prone skin got so much better. Vanicream cleanser, Prequel moisturizer, my topical rosacea prescription and an SPF is it for me. Saves time and money too.
@@bethvasquez9003 My dermatologist has it sent from a pharmacy online. It’s invermectin 1%, metronidazole, niacinamide 4%, and azelaic acid all in one. I am sad that I won’t be able to use a retinol on my neck because the creepiness and lines are really getting bad since I’m in my 60’s.
I always read the ingredients even if I have been using it for years. Ingredients will change. My favorite shampoo changed the ingredients, which I had a reaction to. Always read ingredients. I really like Good Molecules because they post changes on the boxes and listen to feedback. Vanicream for face and Beekman goat bar soap for body. I have a great deal of Prequel products. Thank you for your products. I am using the lotion with Urea. Love the gel balm. Love vitamin c serum and the calming serum. The texture is great. In the winter, I love the Nessaire balm for the body. Vanicream and Paula's Choice rescue and repair face lotion is great. I also use Geek & Gorgeous retinol, which is gentle (I have the Shop app, which helps shipping cost for this specific product). Good Molecules peptide serum and sunscreen are great. I do use Olay sensitive sunscreen for neck only. Black Girls Sunscreen for the body plus I can use Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for this sun screen.
I have started using Prem as a one of my moisturizers. I use a lot of moisturizers because I live in a very arid environment. I vary my sunscreens so that I don't become allergic to them. I use all Korean sunscreens.
Great video! Thank you 🙏…Nivea (blue tin) for night and Emrbryolisse (sensitive) for daytime use, were the only two I could tolerate when I had allergy, eczema with swelling and rosacea flares.
The LP Cicaplast B5 is my basting product that is heavily layer on top to seal all in. I find products with glycerin as one of the first 3-4 ingredients are ones my skin loves. I use at least 4 of the SkinCeuticals products so definitely gets to be $$ but I love them all. And the Tatcha essence is a must have as well as the Tatcha pore priming sunscreen.
The CocoKind Ceramide Barrier Serum is AMAZING. I started using it when my rosacea was flaring really bad and it helped calm my skin and repaired my skin barrier in the process. Also, the Purito Oat-In Intensive Cream is another product I use when my skin barrier is inflamed and it's a game-changer. :)
I strongly recommend La Roche-posay and EltaMD for sensitive skin. I have 7 different skin allergies and when I have a question or a reaction to a product, I can call those companies and speak to an actual staff member who will address my concerns …promptly at that!
@@seechangenyc280 totally reach out to them! I can only use some of their products due to my allergies, but if you have any specific concerns they will help you. Also patch testing can be helpful to identify allergens you may be reacting too. I know I react to some of their “calming” ingredients like turmeric and ginger extract. UVPure and UVPhysical have been safe for me.
Canadian products: cerave cleansers (I tolerate the 4% BPO too), cerave PM moisturizer, cerave ointment, LRP cicaplast baume. Cerave retinols are also very gentle. I also liked Aveeno calm and restore, but the cerave foaming oil cleanser won me over because it removes light makeup and waterproof sunscreen
Cosrx centella cream has worked wonders for my almost always irritated skin 🤓 Also the bioderma atoderm intensive baume is really amazing for healing the barrier.
I always say less is always more , and avoid avoid over exfoliating the skin, and u may way want to avoid ,. Clinique toners also , witch hazel can be bad for sensitive reactive skin
I just want to say I love love your barrier therapy skin protecting cream when I get a little itchy in certain spots with eczema I put it on and it actually calms it down and I also love that Urea lotion. I use every day after my shower, thank you my skin thanks you. 😎 and yes less is more. I introduced a PHA toner from the minimalist no reaction whatsoever. I was afraid to use ones like lactic acid, which I think would’ve affected me differently. Have a great day.
Thank you so much for these great tips! I've had eczema my whole life (now thankfully under control with Dupixent) and I'd love to see a video on eczema specific skincare tips in the future :)
I have reactive skin. My core routine that doesn't fail me is: Cetaphil gentle cleanser Cerave hydrating toner Cerave skin renewing night cream La roche-posay cicaplast balm (when needed) Undefined beauty R &R sun serum
My face didn’t like that LRP moisturizer. But it does like the Vanicream Daily moisturizer. When my skin freaks out, I cut back to the Cetaphil cleanser with the light blue cap, Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF in the AM and the one without at night, and Now Shea Butter as my occlusive. This routine gets my skin feeling normal again in a few days, but I stick with it for a week or two to let my skin recover. I’ve tried the routine without the essence toner, but it doesn’t recover as quickly without it.
Dr. Ellis, I enjoy your videos as well as several of your Prequel products. I'd be interested to hear your opinion on using estrogen cream on the face or neck. I see this topic covered lately on TH-cam -- sometimes by other dermatologists. Is estrogen cream really safe on the facial and neck skin? My own gynecologist says she won't comment or share her thoughts because estrogen cream for the face isn't FDA approved.
Eczema - prone, dry skin person on dupixent: Although I’ve been on dupixent for quite some time and it has changed my life drastically to the better my skin still is nowhere near “not - sensitive”. Because of that I focus on moisturizing and protecting. I’d love to use actives but my skin doesn’t tolerate most of them most of the time. My routine: 1. Wash my face with water (morning), …with a foamy cleanser (NOT foaming) by ISANA…I tolerate it and it’s cheap (evening) 2. All in Barrier Cream by No Cosmetics (Germany) with ceramides 3. Cicaplast Baum B5+ by La Roche Posay 4. Vaseline 5. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics…I tolerate it if my skin is not inflamed (Haven’t found one yet that works for me during an eczema flare up and doesn’t make me look like a white wall and/or super oily) Hope this helps!
As someone who has struggled with eczema for most of my life, I've found that skincare that includes prebiotics & probiotics help my skin barrier recover fastest. So I often use oil-based products, as well as ones with fermented ingredients - partly because my skin has become dry. It's been bad enough at times that even the Embryolisse Lait Crème Sensitive moisturizer has felt like it was burning my skin. This past winter, when it's typically painfully dry so it makes my skin even more sensitive, I was using La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm (at night), Holika Holika Good Cera Super Ceramide Toner, drops of flaxseed oil (high in omega-3 fatty acid) mixed into BYOMA Moisturizing Rich Cream (for day), BYOMA Balancing Face Mist when needed., & e.l.f. Invisible Sunscreen SPF 35 as both an occlusive layer & as a makeup primer.
what to do in the case when testing products appears fine on my arm but on my face I get reactions? I have terrible allergies and find products will affect my face totally different from my body. It is so frustrating
I have super reactive skin that goes through phases of rashes and redness all over. I really love the Sachi Skin Pro Resilience Serum and the Tatcha Indigo Overnight Treatment. And the Prequel Gleanser has been a staple for me!😉
I learned when you're using a retinoid every day, then you might need a day or two of nothing (no actives) prior to using an exfoliant. I felt like I didn't get this advice anywhere (alot of less sensitive people use actual Tret every day then on the 7th day do a chemical exfoliant). Also so many seemingly soothing products have caprylic triglycerides-- I'm super, SUPER acne prone to anything coconut oil related and even this "non-comodogenic" coconut derivative breaks me out. Also, Shea butter breaks me out and it's in every soothing rich cream. Took me ages to figure both out
Why is it so hard to find products that do not contain propylene glycol? I’m allergic to this, based on patch testing with a dermatologist (I was tested for allergies to “the North American 80” aka the top 80 allergens in North America). Why do so many brands (like Cetaphil, CeraVe, Neutrogena, Vanicrean, etc) use propylene glycol in their products when it is known to be on the list of 80 most common allergens? It’s so frustrating!!!! You’d think brands like that would NOT use any of the ingredients from that list…
for me the worst part is that even if I try on a body, it gives me literally 0 information about how it will be on my face. more than that! I can try something new, and for a month or so my skin will be ok with that, but something happens, and it's not ok anymore.
I have the same! I can use a product on my legs, but my hands break out; on my face is fine, but my neck breaks out. Unfortunately it's not just limited to cosmetics/skin care, but also pharmaceutical products as well, (even band-aids and medical tape). So ridiculous! Very frustrating! I can use a product for 3-6 weeks, no problems, and then I start having a reaction. Other products it only takes as little as 2 days. The randomness is what is so frustrating!
Such a great video! Are there any more budget-friendly products that you recommend? Years ago, my dermatologist gave me samples of Cerave moisturizer and cleanser when my skin was more sensitive than usual. I was so please with how much calmer my skin felt after simply washing with the Cerave!
I have sensitive skin that acne prone the combination of both is so hard to maintain but what have worked for me is to keep my skin care simple and look for things that target my acne and soothe my skin i double cleans everyday with bioderma micaller water and any type of cream cleanser and i moisturize with cicalfate and that’s it , in the morning rinse with water moisturize and sunscreen once a week i use benzoyl peroxide and i use hypochlours acid once a day my acne is under control but still not perfect im thinking of adding azelic acid or exfoliating acid or some type of retinoid to control my here and there little acne
Great tips.. very much resonate with starting too many new things at once.. went badly. Like you mentioned, have 2 weeks of no actives time and started slowly again… so much better now! Love prequel barrier therapy and lucent c.. what’s the PAO for prequel products, especially the lucent c? Not able to find it in the bottle.
I use cetaphil gentle cleanser, eucerin mosturizer, mychelle zinc sunscreen (literally the only sunscreen i tolerate- even react to l roche posay and many Korean brands). I use mychelle retinol serum and cerave vitamin c successfully too but I’ve yet to find a exfoliant-I’m too scared to
I dont know if patch test on the arm is the same as your face. I can patch test on my arm, and it will be ok, but once I put on my face, it becomes red and breaks out with little bumps that are not acne. So should I still test on the arm?
@@my2love755 yes but you need to patch test over the course of 7 days, not just a day or two. And make sure it’s the thinner, sun-protected skin in the inner arm or elbow area ☺️ But keep in mind, patch testing is really used for identifying an allergy, not for irritation or acne potential.
I have very sensitive skin always have it runs in my family, i can hardly use anything on my face, vit c and h acid really burns my skin, yes i have delayed reaction normally takes a week or more for it to start.
So id need to evaluate both new ingredients as well as ingredients ive already been using? I can see this might take some time...do you typically at least start with assessing the new stuff? Thank you for your videos, very helpful.

While I don’t have Rosacea, per se, I do have INCREDIBLY reactive, irritation/acne prone skin and this mask has been really helpful at helping my skin chill out.
The first few times I used the Prequel barrier therapy cream it was amazing but now it stings when I use it and I have no idea what I'm allergic to :( (love the prequel mist and ointment tho!)
every time I use a peptide base skin care product I get a tingling/burning sensation no matter how much I Google it, I can't figure out if that's common or me having a sensitivity to peptides...is this normal??
My skin is very sensitive like whenever I put on my face any face products I usually get pimples. How should i solve this issue? I am thinking to see dermatologist but I need a specific treatment 😢 please anyone helps me?
GLYCERINE ALLERGY. Recommendations? A very uncommon allergy, I'm finding out. Very difficult to find skincare products, or other products, without glycerin. Please help.
Seint skincare is the only brand i have tried that doesn't irritate my skin. I haven't gone through a lot though, because i would rather just use water and a microfiber cloth than risk reacting to a new product
I' m literally the oiliest person my derm has seen in all his career. I could use dish washer and a sparto glove if I wanted😅. Until isotretinoine turned me into a dry skinned hypersensitive person. It was like having to learn how to read and write from zero. Sounds stupid but it took me months to re-learn how to remove my mascara and the tone of sunscreen without ending over stripped. Even the most delicate contact with my fingertips became a rush. I felt like being 300 kgs and wake up being 30 kgs if it makes sense. LRP Toleriane and EUCERIN Aquaphor saved my life🩵💙.
I have very sensitive skin and my trusted cleanser is the Cerave bar soap for face wash. It produces nice lather.
You’re lucky! My skin responded very poorly to EltaMD products. I tried several sunscreens and they made my face hot and bothered.
Congratulations Dr. Sam at launching your products at Target.
I have rosacea and have really enjoyed your cleanser and I find snail mucin moisturizer works well for me.
My core routine that doesn't fail me is:
Cetaphil gentle cleanser
Cerave hydrating toner
Cerave skin renewing night cream
La roche-posay cicaplast balm (when needed)
Undefined beauty R &R sun serum
I have super sensitive roscasea skin and I love clearstem bounce back serum and moisturizer. Also, Klur has great products for sensitive skin.
Eczema - prone, dry skin person on dupixent:
Although I’ve been on dupixent for quite some time and it has changed my life drastically to the better my skin still is nowhere near “not - sensitive”.
Because of that I focus on moisturizing and protecting. I’d love to use actives but my skin doesn’t tolerate most of them most of the time.
My routine:
1. Wash my face with water (morning),
…with a foamy cleanser (NOT foaming) by ISANA…I tolerate it and it’s cheap (evening)
2. All in Barrier Cream by No Cosmetics (Germany) with ceramides
3. Cicaplast Baum B5+ by La Roche Posay
4. Vaseline
5. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Rice + Probiotics…I tolerate it if my skin is not inflamed
(Haven’t found one yet that works for me during an eczema flare up and doesn’t make me look like a white wall and/or super oily)
Hope this helps!
Same here, thanks for sharing 🌸
Took me ages to figure both out
I use a Cica ampoule when my face is burning (like Skin1004)
Your videos are always so informative, thank you so much!
Dr. Ellis, I just ordered three products from your skincare line! I am so excited to try them out!! 😃🤗😍
for me the worst part is that even if I try on a body, it gives me literally 0 information about how it will be on my face. more than that!
@@dawnmitchell11 it is frustrating! Totally agree :(
Such a great video!
Naturium Multi Calm Cream Cleanser. Absolute Holy Grail item for my very dry and sensitive skin!
I use cetaphil gentle cleanser, eucerin mosturizer, mychelle zinc sunscreen (literally the only sunscreen i tolerate- even react to l roche posay and many Korean brands). I use mychelle retinol serum and cerave vitamin c successfully too but I’ve yet to find a exfoliant-I’m too scared to
Vanicream cleanser has been my favorite so far! I want to try Prequel when I run out.
Good video. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for this! Your make up is also so good ✨❤️!
I have very sensitive skin always have it runs in my family, i can hardly use anything on my face, vit c and h acid really burns my skin, yes i have delayed reaction normally takes a week or more for it to start.
Thank you Dr Sam. When I try to use concealer around the nose or mouth area it breaks me out, any tips on this ?
So id need to evaluate both new ingredients as well as ingredients ive already been using? I can see this might take some time...do you typically at least start with assessing the new stuff? Thank you for your videos, very helpful.
Hello Dr. Sam Ellis! Thanks a lot for an informative video! I have rosacea skin and I wonder if I can benefit from using LED masks at home? Are they worth trying for someone with rosacea skin ? If yes, could you please recommend a LED mask to use at home? Thanks a lot in advance!
I believe she’s recommended OmniLux, which I’ve gotten and has been a big help in reducing irritation and Inflammation (coupled with Prequel’s Universal Skin Solution).
Cereve cleanser and body moisturizer
Priceless!!! Thank you!!!
every time I use a peptide base skin care product I get a tingling/burning sensation
no matter how much I Google it, I can't figure out if that's common or me having a sensitivity to peptides...is this normal??
I have reaction to peptide based serums as well. Burning, and ten redness, dryness 😢 not sure why!
My skin is very sensitive like whenever I put on my face any face products I usually get pimples. How should i solve this issue? I am thinking to see dermatologist but I need a specific treatment 😢 please anyone helps me?
Love your videos such a professional
♥♥
I’m so curious about “allergens come through cracks on the skin” part. Are there any studies showing that?
Avene and Aveeno products are amazing.
Do you recommend pipette babywash for adults with sensitive dry skin?
Can you please tell me how to treat eczema on the scalp???
GLYCERINE ALLERGY. Recommendations? A very uncommon allergy, I'm finding out. Very difficult to find skincare products, or other products, without glycerin. Please help.
Your videos are brilliant!
Seint skincare is the only brand i have tried that doesn't irritate my skin. I haven't gone through a lot though, because i would rather just use water and a microfiber cloth than risk reacting to a new product
Im confused about the patch test because it can almost insinuate that whatever you use on your body, with no issues, you can use on your face?
What about, vitamin C after 2, 3 years of using it. Now I'm getting red patches and dryness every time I aply it.
Is Skin Ceuticals.
Avene products have been great for me.
Avene seems to never be mentioned by US dermatologists, but it is very helpful to my sensitive skin.
I just use Vanicream products. Case solved! The amount of money that wasted on trying stuff was sad.
The ONLY products my skin can tolerate are First Aid Beauty. It’s a shame I can’t find anything cheaper that doesn’t HURT
thank u so much
I' m literally the oiliest person my derm has seen in all his career. The oiliness has come back slowly but they are always with me anyways🙌🏼
🧛🏻♀️🖤
5:11 I misheard oatmeal as "opium to soothe the skin" 😂
Dr. Ellis , you look pretty in green❤
Aw thank you!
Why the inner arm? Especially if you are going to use it on your face. Your inner arm won’t show you if it will cause you to break out?
I can use a lot more on my body than I can on my face so yes I don't think test on arm would work.
The inner arm isn’t meant to test for breakouts, it’s meant to test for a true allergy to a product!
“Natural” usually means a less effective product, also 😅
So thankful for these reminders for those of us who are just sensitive skin girlies and boy-ies? Lolz.
Lots of good reminders in here! One thing I will say is to try to not stress about our flaring sensitivities. I sometimes get so confused as to why my skin is freaking out, to the point that I’m so stressed about it, which in turn makes my skin worse…
Calming breath, core 4, and try again 🩵🩵
CBD oil has been a life changing discovery for my skin. So soothing, so calming, I mix it into moisturizer or layer on top. Current fave is Herbivore Emerald.
I have rosacea
I wasn't needing a retinol at all and started using different things and then I noticed my face my forehead getting red and it hurt to the touch and it burned.
I don't understand the third mistake well
La Roche posay still test on animals.
Well, so let’s say I buy 100 dollars moisturizer. Then I do a patch test. What then? I trow the 100 dollars cream to the trash? Or donate? Hell no.
Éviter les produits chimique c'est tout.
Bros been mewing
Hi there! I have been trying to contact you through your email address regarding some business offer... It seems like the email address is not valid - I would appreciate it if you could share the correct email address with me. Your videos are just great!
I was using Clinique toner #1 , big mistake felt sting, went back to Kiehls and my milk cleansers as well and Dr jart..m
I have big pimples in 1-2 weeks after using anything with hyaluronic acid 🥲 So around 80% of products are useless for me
