The fact that fragrance free and unscented are not one in the same was very helpful. This video was so informative.

As someone with sensitive skin who is in my 40s, I am constantly trying products only to have them make my skin itchy, burn, and irritated. This is one reason I generally stick with a product once I find something that works, until they stop making it or change the formula.
I have been devouring your channel since I found it last night and this information is SO amazing. Thank you!!!!

My skin (Black/African)become sensitized by using tretnoin incorrectly. Thereafter,no more tretnoin 2 years later. I'm back to basics . I only use one active like every 2 days and keep track with a physical calendar.i literally schedule my skincare ( actives and non-actives). Great and Accurate tips Dr.Idriss

I have the most sensitive skin on the planet! But if you use the ingredients as directed and follow the directions by your doctor a actual doctor not something you order online then you should be fine! A lot of people just watch TH-cam videos or read stuff online to be able to achieve the results that you're looking for and yes it is absolutely possible and very achievable to get the glass skin effect you see and hear about but to achieve that not only do you need the correct ingredients followed by the correct dosing and directions to use them you must have a dermatologist! Not one that you watch on TH-cam but go to an actual dermatologist! It is expensive but if you have insurance especially good insurance you should be fine. If you can't afford a dermatologist I would just recommend using the bare minimum on your skin because if you don't go to an actual professional and in this case dealing with the skin you need a dermatologist you can do great significant damage to yourself! I can tell you a great line that is affordable and does wonders for very sensitive skin whether you're African American or Caucasian or Latino or blue or green or from outer space it doesn't matter! Aveeno soothing calm oat serum face wash and gel moisturizer are absolutely phenomenal! They are the most soothing ingredients I have found even compared to my several hundred dollar products that I use. It doesn't matter how tore up your skin is if you use these products and nothing else your face will heal almost overnight and that's not an understatement it will take the red irritation and pain right out of your skin literally the first time you use it especially the serum! So if you buy those three things and use nothing else except a good sunscreen for at least a month you will have your Skin barrier back to damn near perfect! Then you can move on to other things. But I can't strongly recommend enough going to an actual board certified dermatologist that you actually go into an office and see not one online! Yes you can get good advice online but it is not the same thing as actually having a doctor who went to school for this to look at your skin type and your face and diagnose and treat you with the proper products! I love my dermatologist I wish I had went to one years ago he has made such a difference in my skin! I literally have the glass skin that everybody talks about and I'm not trying to boast or brag about myself because years ago my skin was horrible absolutely horrible but it's not anymore! My skin is absolutely gorgeous and glowing and I'm so thankful to him for that and to myself for actually following directions and doing what he told me to! I literally do not wear makeup at all anymore unless I'm going out on a date with my husband or to something important! The only thing that goes on my face everyday is a tented sunscreen that is it nothing more except for some clear brow gel to keep my brows in place and that's it I don't even need mascara or anything else I have never in my life got so many compliments that I have gotten in the past 2 years and it just keeps getting better and I'm so thankful for that! I used to suffer horribly with cystic acne I mean it was absolutely horrible thank God I didn't have any scarring from the acne I'm so thankful for that but I did have constant painful breakouts that were so embarrassing and I would try to hide that with makeup and that was definitely not the right thing to do I tried every expensive bougie product you can think of but nothing was working and I have always wore sunscreen every single day of the year doesn't matter if it's January or July I always wear sunscreen but my problem was I needed to go to an actual professional and finally when I did that my whole world started to change and literally within 6 months of treatment and seeing a professional my face had cleared completely up I don't even have one single blackhead on my face and my pores are almost non-existent I can't express what a difference it will make for you if you will find a board certified dermatologist to call your own and not use anything on TH-cam or Google actually go to a doctor you will be so surprised at what your skin can turn into no matter how bad it is I promise it can be a hundred times better if you will just make an appointment and go! Just make sure you actually research and look at reviews and find the right doctor that's for you don't just go by a fancy doctor's office actually look the doctor up find out how long they've been practicing do they have any medical malpractices against them what have their patience had to say and not just recent reviews look back several years back that's what I did I found the best dermatologist ever and he's actually one of the best in the country I'm so thankful that I did my research I really pray that you are able to get your skin the way that you want it but if you will just take my advice I promise you will not regret it! But if you are not financially able to afford to go to a dermatologist if you will at least use those ingredients that I just told you about I promise you your face will be so much more calm and healthy just within a few days of using it but definitely if you use it for a month your face will be pretty much healed completely up and Your Skin barrier back intact but you will feel the relief literally from day one when you use those products it amazes me how well and wonderful they are considering they are so simple and basic and inexpensive I have products that cost $400 and more and none of it can make my skin feel as good as that simple brand that I just told you about but it can't just be anything from them it has to be those three products I told you about I promise you won't regret it I really do I wish you the best of luck take care!

Have you started to incorporate a peptide serum or cream? Peptides can aid the skin in regenerating the skin barrier if damaged. They are in many over the counter retinol formulations to reduce irritation.

Same!!! Tretinoin is too harsh for my skin. My skin barrier is becoming thinner after having the acne on my face. I got a light therapy device from #touchbeauty. The blue light works pretty well for my acne skin. It does not instantly result during the skincare routine. But I can feel my skin is much smoother than before. The breakout is decreasing in my cheeks. 😘

Full disclosure: before I discovered Asian sunscreens I rarely wore sunscreens beyond beach/pool/lake/hiking times. Definitely NOT every day. And I'm a Fitzpatrick 1-2! I've had those bad sunburns that make you feel nauseous 😫. But the sunscreens we have here also made me feel awful, like I had a plastic film on my skin. The odors of them made me nauseous. At 25yo, I all of a sudden had bad seasonal allergies, asthma, and got roseacea. I joke around that my atopic gene got activated. The roseacea was what got me (many years later) looking at Korean skincare and interested in their sunscreens. I watched Dr. Dray discuss some and decided to try one of those. The completely different experience led me to become a (almost) daily wearer who has sunscreen in my bag to reapply 😁. I hope the FDA either decides to continue looking the other way or gets off their butts and approves the better filters they use in Asia and Europe, because I would not be making healthier skin choices if it wasn't for them. My go to brand is the simple, elegant Pyunknag Yul brand, specifically their ATO line. My very reactive skin looooves their moisturizers, oil, and sun cream.

That La Roche-Posay Cicaplast cream has an SPF 50 version! It's my absolutely favourite sunscreen (I'm currently on my 5th tube?), though imo it works best for people with drier skin as it is equally as rich as the non-SPF version. Either way, it's not sticky, doesn't leave much of a whitecast, works great under makeup (if you don't like the intense shine it gives a little bit of translucent powder takes care of it just fine), and doesn't irritate the eyes (something I struggle with a lot as well when it comes to sunscreens). The skin looks nice and glowy, and I noticed much less irritation at the end of the day compared to other sunscreens I've tried. It's available in the US too for around 10 bucks for 40ml (1.35oz)!
Btw thank you for another amazing video ❤️ I love your content (you actually convinced me to try retinol, I was too scared of actives before) and your sense of humour 😊 Hope you have an amazing day!

First summer I have been using Avène's Triprotect 50SPF... and my God, what a difference it has made to my summer skin. No more runny eyes, no more small inflammations everywhere, no whitecast and my skin is well hydrated. It's a tiny (!) bit greasy but I just apply a tiny layer of 30 SPF powder on top and it looks great and natural 👌

I have dry and sensitive skin 🙋🏼‍♀ For that reason I absolutely love La Roche Posay Lipikar line of products! I tried their products for showering and moisturizing my body, and I will try their products for the face as well after finishing the products I already have for my face. I only use fragrance free skincare. I prefer them over CeraVe because a lot of CeraVe products contain mineral oils that break me out.
I use makeup daily though and I try to use mostly makeup that is cruelty free and often times fragrance free (not always, but in some products the fragrance doesn’t bother me - lipsticks, eyeshadows, lip glosses…). Estée Lauder Double Wear is a fragrance free foundation but it is not cruelty free and that’s a bummer. I just ordered Light Wonder foundation from Charlotte Tilbury and hopefully my skin won’t react to it. I’ve seen Charlotte putting that foundation on someone who has rosacea so I’m hopeful 😊 I don’t have rosacea though.
Anyways, love your channel! Thank you for your help! ❤

Thank you so so much for covering this. My skin has become so sensitive and delicate since going through the menopause. It’s really hard to navigate a whole new skin type and now becomes so irritated by pretty much anything. Your description is so apt for my skin these days! The thing I truly struggle with is how to remove makeup as micellar water, cotton pads, oils , balms all really really irritate my skin but most gentle cleansers just don’t remove makeup. Excellent advice! Patch testing changed everything for me. Now I can cross-check my known sensitivies with products on Skin Safe, and my eczema flares much less frequently. Even so, I got burned by not patch testing recently. I tried a new cleanser that was the same brand as my usual, advertised for sensitive skin, approved by the Eczema Association. I used it on my whole face, and ended up regretting it.

Depending on the weather my skin can occasionally become sensitive. Since following you I have been become a Vanicream fan…cleanser, ointment, deodorant and cream have saved my skin. Also I have found using Vanicream 50+ sunscreen around my eyes stopped the burning problem. The “white ghost” look gets covered by shadow base and concealer then I apply another sunscreen on rest of my face and neck. (This week it’s La Roche Posay Double repair UV).

Hi Dr Shereene. Patch testing is a bit more of a laborious process for me than you described lol. No new product ever goes near my face before it has been tried on the body twice and the neck/behind the ear. I have rosacea and the centre of my face will react to things my neck, or perimeter of the face tolerate fine. I also have eczema, so my body skin is quite sensitive too. There have been many times I've been grateful I tried something on the inner elbow first lol. My process is as follows:
Ist day apply a small dab to the inner elbow and monitor for 24 hours
2nd day apply a small dab to the bust area in an inconspicuous place and again monitor for 24 hours
3rd day apply a small dab behind the ear and watch for 24 hours
4th day a very small dab on the chin and see how that goes
5th day if no issues apply to whole face
I devised this method as the best for me, when i've had miserable reactions despite normal patch testing methods. I can't put something remotely near my face without trying on less sensitive areas first, as I could have a fairly severe reaction. Recently I tried the Stratia liquid gold (much hyped, beloved in the skincare community and fragrance free). I had to wash it off my arm after less than 30 seconds and apply my steroid ointment to deal with the rash that appeared. I had a quick reaction to it and a fairly fierce reaction. Difficult to pinpoint the ingredient, but perhaps the sea buckthorn as I don't think I've used that before. In any case it was given to a friend with the appropriate warning, but they like it fine. I don't just have "sensitive" skin, but have hyper reactive skin and have to be really careful. Best wishes.

I have 2 points of constructive feedback for this vid.
    1. Dr Jart uses essential oils in all their products and it seems ill advised to be recommending something with Citrus Essential oils then proceed to discuss why fragrance free products are important for sensitive skin. Both Fragrance AND essential oils should be avoided with sensitive skin and rosacea especially in general. They both have the same irritating fragrant compounds (Terpenes) that cause issues on skin. It would be helpful to at least explicitly disclose those in the future if you do continue to suggest products with EO. I know you are not quite as concerned with them personally but it is an issue for people with sensitivities to fragrance.
    2. The entire section about marketing claims with "hypoallergenic" and "anti-redness" is all marketing nonsense. It means nothing and isnt regulated in any way. Something marketed as hypoallergenic can still have Essential Oils. (Even fragrance free products can). Hypoallergenic is not a useful term to consumers because it is not used in a consistent way to mean what it should.
It could have EO or menthol or methylisochlorothiazolinone.
From the FDA website: "There are no Federal standards or definitions that govern the use of the term "hypoallergenic." The term means whatever a particular company wants it to mean. Manufacturers of cosmetics labeled as hypoallergenic are not required to submit substantiation of their hypoallergenicity claims to FDA."

Totally agree with your advice! My face does not like actives (Vitamin C makes my skin go nuts). Happy to hear you rec Vanicream cleanser and cream (so does my derm). Been using them on my face and body for years. No breakouts. I have super, super sensitive skin. I know what you mean when you say the cream is tacky. Doesn't bother me (on my body, not tacky at all).
Had high hopes for Vanicream's new lotion with Ceramides but it makes me break out as does their regular lotion and both feel awful on my face...The cleanser can be drying for some but I double cleanse. I know it's not your thing but I use a water-resistant sunscreen and Vanicream Cleanser will not take it off. Via some magic, the cleansing oil (fragrance-free), reduces the dryness.
For sunscreen, I admit, I order EVY Kids 50 from overseas (sensitive folks, don't order the Face version!). It's the only sunscreen that agrees with my face. I've tried dozens from the U.S. and overseas - even the Vanicream, which I can only use on my body. Awful on my face. It's wicked white, even on my fair skin and tacky but if you rub, rub, rub, it disappears. Not fond of rub, rub, rub....Willing to spend more for a sunscreen for my face...
I should come see you. I live in NYC.

Oh I picked a perfect day to start following your channel! I have EDS/MCAS so definitely need more tips on sensitive skincare. I’m trying to learn a proper routine kind of late (in my 30s) after taking my youthful looking EDS skin for granted my whole life. Now I’m getting terrible scars and the first tiiiiniest signs of fine lines, barely, so I figured better actually get this stuff figured out!
Anyway, really enjoying the videos so far, thank you for putting all this info out there!
Also is there any chance you might do a video on complex skin issues in the future, like EDS skin, in particular wound care? I have a NIGHTMARE of a time with that! Bandaids (or any adhesive) cause hives. Hydrocolloid patches cause my skin to basically dissolve, and then tear the top layer off, reopening the wound. Almost every wound on my chest, even the tiniest little blemish, has started leaving either white-pink shiny keloid or hypertrophic (not exactly sure which?) scars behind. So many scar creams I’ve tried cause hives. 😩 Whenever I try googling the correct method to use to manage wounds with delicate skin I get such conflicting info about what the right strategies are. Or info that may work fine for normal skin but not for people with connective tissue disorders or otherwise very delicate/fragile skin.
I really need to go to a derm and get this stuff sorted (and ask about laser scar removal or something to fix my chest and neck) but am never sure how to find drs knowledgeable about EDS! It’s always a struggle.

I live in a very humid climate (Pacific NW), but work in a dry building. I have a history of significant Sun exposure r/t prev careers. If I was going to start with one active ingredient - what would you suggest? At what concentration and frequency?

I’m having this skin rashes for months. I believe it’s called pityriasis rosea. I saw a dermatologist and she prescribed me ketoconazole and wynzora. Been consistently applied it for more than a month but it doesn’t seem to go away. I would appreciate if you can make a video about the cause, treatment and what I can do to avoid reoccurrence in the future. Thank you ♥️

Thank you. I have developed eczema(diagnosed through a Dermatologist with 2 biopsies) in the last year and a half. It seems to present differently on my face and neck than on my legs. There is rarely a day that I don't have a "breakout". I used a lot of prescribed ointments which is like playing wack a mole. I have been following suggestions from people as far as dandruff shampoo, certain baths and creams of course recommended from the eczema assoc also changed to clear detergent. My derm has said that they are seeing so much of this since the covid vaccine which I had with 2 boosters. I know this is controversial but since I never had it before I can't tell what is triggering the breakouts. The red sores on my legs and bumps on my face and neck are unsightly but the itch is over the top. My husband is also new to this affliction and is also vaccinated and boostered. Is there an answer to this. Thanks again.

I used salicylic acid (BHA) literally three time and my skin took literally 2 years to heal the skin barrier due to extreme sensitivity and dehydration. The products that helped where La Roche Posay Toleriane cleanser and the Toleriane moisturiser from the same brand. For sunscreen Badger Non Nano Zinc Oxide is the mildest mineral formula I found. Good luck everyone🌻

Thank you so much for this video!!! I'm in Australia and we have cool, dry winters and very hot & humid summers. I have dry skin and just turned 46 and wanted to add some treatments to my skin so in the morning I use a BHA cleanser, followed by Vit C, Moisturriser, Sunscreen.
In the evening I use a gentle cleanser, Retnol serum and Moisturiser.
I suddenly developped the worst itchy rash around my neck. I went back to basics but unfortunately the rash didn't get any better until I changed my sunscreen!
Turns out I developed a really bad reaction to the Naked Sundays Sun Serum! Maybe it's the 10% Homosalte, I don't know but If I would have patch tested, I would have known...

Thank you so incredibly much & I definitely agree with everything you said. My skin is … I don’t know how to describe it anymore. I definitely have to approach everything carefully & use as minimal products as possible… cleanser, moisturiser , a serum and azelaic acid. Would love to hear more about rosacea too ( I’m starting to have more redness I have noticed and am quite worried…. Would love to hear your thoughts on La roche posay Rosaliac intense serum actually!)
Thank you so incredibly much again … and love your personality
Edit… love that by La roche cicaplast- is a life saver at times and a few of there moisturisers & facial cleanser are ama . Always in my bathroom and use daily

Hi Dr. Idriss! I love your videos! They honestly give me hope that my skin can heal and improve! I have a few video suggestions. I was wondering if you could post a video of what ingredients not to use while on isotretinoin(accutane)? A video of a Skin care routine for post accutane to get rid of acne marks, redness, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation. And lastly a video (related to your recent video on do’s and dont’s for combining different ingredients/chemicals in skin care routine) about what combination of ingredients do you recommend in a skincare routine and how many combinations you can use? I hope you see this and hope it makes sense!

Sensitive and dry skin here with very sensitive eyes. I adore La Roche Posay UVMUNE 400 sunscreen. It does the job brilliantly with no tears and no problems. It worked for me, just try it and see if it works for you guys too. The only thing is that it contains alcohol, but it did not bother my skin. It also fits my mom's skin very well, which is 60+ dry skin and extra sensitive eyes ofc.

I have oily, sensitive skin and I am grateful for Dr. Jart’s sunscreen. It has been my favorite, however it does leave a bit of a white cast- so you do need to rub it in more. Other than that I wish it came in a bigger container!

I moved from a very humid climate to a fairly dry climate. The zinc oxide sunscreen I used in Florida dried out my skin in Colorado. Turns out, zinc oxide has a mild astringent effect! Once I switched to a chemical sunscreen, the issue went away. It was a bummer, I liked that previous one.

Thanks for this video; I have a sensitive skin. Interestingly, I've tried the Beauty of Josein sunscreen and had a negative reaction on my face and I tried it three times, so it's the product. I can use it on my neck and arms, so don't need to waste it. But it gives me red bumps on my face and burns, especially my eyes.

A lot of people have been reacting negatively to the probiotics found in that product: Try the Round Lab sunscreen instead. It’s as elegantly textured as the Beauty of Joseon and it doesn’t contain probiotics.

Hello Dr. Idriss, watching your videos is really fun and enjoyable :)
Could you make a video about "How to read and interpret the INCI list?", please?
I would be interested to know, if a product would probably be effective or not. Hence, I would like to be able to roughly estimate the percentage of the key ingredients and know, if they are in the therapeutic range.
Also, I think that the non-key ingredients are rarely mentioned.
What are good preservatives? What are good consistency makers?
What types of ingredients are needed to make a whole product and what are there typical percentage in a product?
Also, what about price efficacy? At which point do I pay for clever marketing and not for a good product anymore?
That would be great to have more insight into this :)
    Have a nice day!

I hate using products that have been tested on animals, but they’re sometimes the only things that work when my skin is acting up. I’ve tried Avene and LRP lines with some success. The only products from either that have become a necessity though are the LRP Hydrating Cleanser and Cicaplast Baume. When I need a cleanser to use without water, there’s one from Eucerin that I prefer over those from LRP and Avene. I use a Vanicream moisturizer, too. Sunscreens are very difficult for my skin. Many of them contain salicylates which my skin doesn’t tolerate. I’ve yet to find one that I can apply daily, but I’ve got a few that work in rotation-Badger (very few ingredients), Cotz, Beauty of Joeson, and Paula’s Choice. I use ThinkBaby on my body. As to patch testing, I have to test it on my face for 3-5 days. It takes that long for some irritants to start making my face angry. Testing on my arm is helpful only if the reaction is intense. For example, putting a product that contains lanolin on my arm burns my skin within minutes maybe even seconds.
