I made this for my family. My mom and step dad are from Puerto Rico. They were blown away and couldn't believe I made them. They said I've earned my boriqua card. I even made some vegan for my sister. Thank you so much for teaching me. I'm making them again this year and every year.

@@moss.and.hemlocke I cook green canned Jack fruit but I season it like I would the pork. With sofrito, sazon, adobo, better than bouillon no chicken base, onions and garlic, black pepper, oregano and bay leaves. I make hers first to avoid cross contamination. I give her a dozen, it's my gift to her every year.

We made pasteles last year (which were amazing) but they took us 8 hours to cook because she kept walking away from me 🙄 You've taught me so much already, Ida! My MIL is Puerto Rican and she introduced me to so much authentic Puerto Rican cuisine. I remember the first time that I saw a pastele and I was like, “unh unh, I don’t think so.” But when I put this in my mouth a spectacular explosion occurred. I have been in love with these since the early 90’s when my daughter was born. There is nothing on the planet like these. I miss them and seeing this makes me want them even more. Thank you for sharing your recipe with us. I hope that the Island and the people are recovering since the hurricanes. Much love I have for the Puerto RIcan people many times over. Puerto Rico/Puerto Ricans will always have a special place in my heart forever!

You're so right about the taste/smell making you think about family. Whenever I make my mom's root vegetable beef soup, I think about my childhood, coming home from school and smelling her soup cooking on the stove top. I hope the smells and foods I create in my kitchen will someday remind my kids of me. God bless.

You're such a sweetheart! Im glad I found your channel yesterday.. watching this - wow brings back memories. You wrapped it all in a nutshell at the end when you recall how it FEELS when you taste the goodness. That's what COOKING is about.. bringing one to recall the wholesome of family / traditions... the smells... awwww, when you can bring that to life again and start the next generations to appreciate the blessings along with friends.. aww that is COOKING WITH LOVE. I recall my first time with my mother-in-law and abuelo... awww I was 16 years old.. (yes married young and to this still with the man who compliments my life and fathered my children - OLD SCHOOL HERE)... but wow.. was that a traditional moment to recall - that I still hold dear to me and plan on giving to my grands today! and YEEEESSS. PLEASE DONT ADD RAISINS.. (yuuuuck) - You are awesome.. I've noticed you dont have recent vids.. so sad, I do hope you're still cooking with love.

    💜 *Hi BEAUTIFUL* 💜
    _You Are Geeat and Smart_
Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge. I have never made pastel but LOVE when I have eaten them. They are delicious. My mouth is salivating as I am texting this message and watching you mix the annato on the white blend. Yummy. I love your voice and you are a great teacher and speaker. I haven't eaten pastels in years. I got here by a fluke. I wasn't even thinking or aware they had how to on TH-cam on this delicious food. I know the UNIVERSE wanted me to find this video. I can't wait to make them. Thank goodness you speak English. Spanglish. So I can understand. You are great. I will watch the other videos RECIPES that you share, I am excited to learn. Yummy. I am so appreciative more then you know. Have a FANTASTIC day and new WEEK W/FAMILY and FRIENDS. HUGS and KISSES
    November 18, 2019. MONDAY. 10AM. WHAT A BLESSING. 💜

Pasteles are...family.love.Christmas.memories! Add some arroz and gandules with a glass of coquito. My mother, grandmother, tia, cousins, etc. would all gather round to make pasteles for the holidays. Originally, I am from New York. But, now I live in California. Thank you for sharing. Orgullosa de ser Boricua! Wepa! Para lo ques sepa!

Thanks for making this video and your other ones!! My great grandma passed away a few years ago and it was tradition to make it with the family. She was the glue to our family and after she passed, they stopped doing the tradition. I ask my mom for one every year but she never remembers to save me one 😑. So now I must take matters into my own hands and teach my family how to make them. Thank you!

Oh my goodness, you literally made me cry! Talking about "la tradición", the tradition of preparing something passed down from generation to generation, and obviously the holidays and holidays past..... Brings back so many memories! If I could thumbs this video up 1000 times I would! I adore your videos, and your personality so much! FYI, you also cracked me up when you mentioned people putting raisins in their pasteles and you were like "PLEASE DON'T!" Hahahaha!!!😂 I never understood raisins in pasteles, but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?! Lol Your pasteles looked delicious! And just the right size too!! Never liked those ginormous pasteles and all you bite into is a big hunk of masa!😝😝 😂 AWESOME VIDEO! And your coquito video😍😍😍 loved it, and even shared the link with my dad since he's the coquito maker and distributor for the holidays! Told him to try the new flavor too!!! Thanks for your hard work on these videos that you make look so effortless! 😘⭕️❌

It brings back a lot of memories for me as well. I made sure I passed on the tradition to my child as well. I want her to have the same happy memories that I have making pasteles with the family.

But since we live far I had to relearn and make them by myself! Wish I could send a picture to show off my hard work! Deliciousooooo Gracias mujer!

Sister, I’m with you in that one! Great video btw. I’m making pasteles today. Got a few pointers from you, so I thank you. Btw my least favorite part of making pasteles is peeling the green bananas. It’s too sappy and sticky lol. I wish there was a much easier way to clean it. Wish me luck. Love from Hawaii ❤️🤙🏽
