My abuela always made this and I could never figure out how she did it! No matter how I made it, it never came out like here. (I think its because i didnt drain the yucca!!!!) My grandparents were from Puerto Rico. My grandmother made the best pastels. Back then she couldn't find some of the ingredients so she had to substitute.

My mother would make these but instead she baked them in the oven. She would put them on aluminum foil with the Achiote oil and wrap them then bake them. They are delicious this way too.

Love you, you make it look so easy.I think it is a dieing tradition, the younger generation was scared away because we saw the root vegetables grated by hand, it’s a lot of work. You make it look easier to make! Thanks, I may try it myself!
