Ty my grandma is from Bayamón. She’s in her 80’s n doesn’t cook anymore. Now I know how to make one of our favorite meals as a kid when she used to babysit me. It will be nice to sit and eat with her. Have a blessed day 💚
The best part? When your granddaughter was helping you!! That's what I remember growing up, the assembly line in the kitchen with everyone in charge of doing something for the pasteles!! Labor of LOVE!!! Thank you for sharing this recipe.
I made your Pastales for the first time and they were delicious. I even made them again and shared them with my family, everyone loves them. My mother says they taste like the way her mother use to make them. Evelyn you have some great recipes, thanks for sharing.
I learned the hard way about the bananas! I never knew about Pasteles until my sister married a Puerto Rican man 20 + years ago. I offered to help him, who taught my sis, to make Pasteles. He warned me about the stains that I would get because of the green bananas and said to wear gloves. Needless to say, two weeks later and I was still trying to srub off the stains from my hands. The delicious outcome was worth the stains garnered by the green bananas. Just yum! Great vid.
Thank you for the video it brought tears to my eyes remembering my mom making them and everyone had a Lil part to play. Love my boricua women the most beautiful thing God has created.
My aunt Mary made every Christmas, but remember she put 3 green olives in each for the trinity I think. She is gone and I miss pasteles, so thankyou very much
My aunt always had to send them to us from chicago cause noone else knew how to make them. Until I decided to do it myself, now mine taste better than hers lol.... and my wife is white and she helps me and we get them done in 4 to 5 hours. Love these and I'm glad for having Puerto rican blood.
Thank you so much. My mother-in-law, God rest her soul, would send us pasteles every year . Now I'm trying to learn so I can make for my husband and sons.
I just finished making these with my Abuelo :) It was my first time making these, I have NEVER IN MY LIFE made pasteles before, so this was my first time. Abuelo said I was a natural :)
I truly appreciate you for showing step by step to makes my favorite family food my father pass away 24yrs ago an I beg my other side of the (Cartagena’s)family and was willing to pay an buy everything to make these for me but it’s seems I couldn’t get them to I don’t understand why an the rice an the fried potatoes with meat inside or is it green bananas deep fried I don’t remember I’m truly grateful to follow you and I love you for showing me how Serena Cartagena 💋💋🥰🥰Madison Wisconsin 53704🙏💋🍷🥰❣️
Ugh this gave me so much nostalgia and kind of made me tear up… my gmom and my mom and I would sometimes sit around the table making pasteles and the whole family would gather and just enjoy her amazing food .. the music the kids playing the adults cracking jokes and reminiscing… what I would do to have that again… it takes me back .. I can almost smell the food and hear my family and feel the vibes as I watch this video .. don’t take family for granted guys.. stay blessed and stay humble always appreciate what you have .. even the small things .. even just being in the presence of your family… thank you for this video ❤
thank you Evelyn, I am making pasteles for the first time because my mother used to always make them. It's so funny we never measure. It's all by sight. This helps. I subscribed.
This is a family ordeal. Fifty years ago everyone would make these at my grandparents house. There was always 20 or 30 of us helping. Everyone had their specific job. We were the children in charge of peeling the banana and plantano as well as grating them. We were very poor so no fancy graters or food processor. My grandfather would make holes on the bottom of an empty coffee can with a nail and we used that to grate. The hands were all black once we were finished 😢 Only a few were allowed to touch the food with bare hands and assemble the pastele in the kitchen. Grandma was very strict. We would sneak in to steal candy from the dish on the table on occasion 😂 These are some of the best memories I have of my childhood. I love that your granddaughter is learning. I am one of two siblings out of seven that can still make this. The rest do not care to continue the tradition. It is hard work and is easier when the whole family helps, but the results are worth it and the memories created during the process are priceless! No matter how poor you may think you are in finance, you make up for it by being one of the richest in eternal love. Thank you for sharing ❤ My mother is visiting me from Hawaii in about a month. This is one thing I look forward to making for her 😊
¡Que ricos! Mira que yo guayé plátanos y guineos en vcantidades industriales y con u guayo, nada de esas maquinitas que facilitan todo. ¡Buen provecho!
My husband is boricua and he craves good Puerto Rican food all the time. Unfortunately, his side of the family lives too far to visit every weekend and there are NO Puerto Rican restaurants around me......so I'm trying to learn some recipes to make for him. I've always wanted to learn to make pasteles and your video makes it seem very easy! Thank you so much for sharing your recipe!
They are delicious. I m a black woman with a p.rican son that 27 yrs old and my girlfriend showed me how to make it when I was 13 yrs old and every since I been making them in November so we can have them for Christmas and new year's. I showed my p.rican husband & son on how to make them. So every year they both help me make them we usually make about 150 of them and freeze them so we can have throughout the year. They are our all time favorite with are Puerto Rican rice beans. .which I cook lots of p.rican food daily. 😋😊..... I love to cook anyway...but I'm glad to see your recipe here in English..great job..👍👍
Wow! Watching you make these pastelles reminded me of when my mom used to make them. She is no longer here but and I miss her pastelles. You make them exactly like she use to make them. The only difference is that we didn't have a vegetable grating machine. I was always in charge of guallando.... I was like your granddaughter helping to wrap them up. I never really knew all the steps but since you have made this video, you can not imagine how wonderful it was to watch each and every step and now know exactly how to make them. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU so much for SHARING the PUERTO RICAN way of making PASTELLES. Gracias un million de veses.
Thank you Evelyn for the step by step video. I really appreciate. I am far from family, so watching you make pasteles brings me memories of back home. I plam on making my first pasteles this weekend before Navidad. God Bless YOU and your familia.
When I made these with my grandma we grated everything by hand. Green bananas, achiote, potato and yuca. She'd oven bake the pork with adobo and sazon, as well as seasoning the grated vegetables. Absolutely delicious!!
Go for it, they are really good tasting. Some Puerto Ricans (I'm born and raised in PR) will say this is sacrilege, but just a bit of ketchup on top gives a nice flavor balance.
Ami me gustan mucho los pastels boriquas pero para hacerlos es mucho trabajo, asi que mejor los compro.me encanta las recetas de. Evelyn ya e echo unas cuantas

My husband misses home and I really want to do something special for him. I only know how to make Japanese food I don’t have a clue what or how to make Puerto Rican food but I’ll be happy getting even a little close.
My job helping my mother was to help grate the verdura and later tie the pasteles up. She would use leftover meat to add to a pot of arroz con gandules YUM🇵🇷❤️ I sure miss her ❤️
I got tired just watching this I’ve never made them but I ate them plenty of times they are sooo delicious but now I think I’m going to give this a try. My daughter will be so surprised she loves them too!
It is an incredible amount of preparation and work to make pasteles. Luckily I have found a woman in the Sacramento area who makes them, and they are delicious. I can get them year-round. YUM! I am actually going to have 3 for lunch.
My mother-in-law made these and this is the only thing my husband asks for at Christmas. I really want to surprise him but not having someone there to show me in person makes me feel nervous that I will mess everything up. This is really helpful. I was wondering if you could add the recipe some day to the description box for those of us who don’t know what we are doing. ❤
I had to watch this video cos the pastelas looked a lot like Nigerian moi-moi. Same concept except we use beans instead of bananas and taro roots. Thanks for posting this. Merry Xmas 🎄
