My mother would add the olives in the meat, and add extra achiote in the meat mix, then use the juice of meat to put a layer on the parchment paper, that cuts extra work time
I did an half and half. I followed your recipe for the pork, but substituted the wrap recipe with a corn meal dough. 🥰We’re a quad-racial family (black American/Trini and Puerto Rican/Dominican). The dish was delightful and tasty. My family enjoyed the infusion 👍🏾
With Corn Meal doe , they are called Tamales not PR Rican Pasteles, a lot of So American,Cubans & Mexicans use Corn Meal, I like them too especially if they are picante with (hot chilly sauce)
My mom made hers with plantains, potatoes, yautia and green bananas as well, she passed away and my sister took her recipe and won't give it to anybody, I have been looking online for masa using those ingredients but can't find a recipe without pumpkin. I would love the recipe if you're willing to share. Please please 🙏
It wasn't until last year when I made pasteles that I used my Oster food processor for the very first time to make masa. I tried once with my regular blender, but the masa came out watery. Not good, ugh! Anyway, all the years before that, I had done it the old fashioned way by grating it by hand. Can you imagine? Yeah, it's old fashioned, but that's how I was taught and it was the basic reality of how masa was born. It's was very time consuming and tedious, but that's how you did it. (My mom and dad had a restaurant in Brooklyn, NY back in the day and I helped a lot in the kitchen making them.) Now that I know my food processor works BIG time, it cuts corners like you wouldn't believe. I wish my mom were still here so I can show her the "easier" way of making masa. I no longer wait for just the holidays to make pasteles, because the time consuming elements have been cut out and so I can make and eat them anytime I want. Besides, time waits for no one, so if it's something you enjoy, why wait for the holidays? Make them now and enjoy...TAA-DAA!!
conishkee when the masa is too thin you can add a couple of platanos to create the consistency you’re looking for, just be careful not to use too many it can make the masa hard
No way, the most time consuming part is pealing the bananas 😂. Doing a big batch and pealing 2 boxes of bananas is the worst lol, but the payoff is worth it
@@FatPanda_ You've got that right, but there's an easy way by placing your bananas in the sink and covering them in hot water for about 10 minutes, and wella, easy as pie to peel them. Try it!
My dad who just passed away, made pasteles every Christmas while I was growing up, he used to dice up potatoes and add to meat mixture along with Spanish olives. He used to wrap the pasteles in foil and they were delish! Love your video, I plan to make them this year. My first year!!! Thank you!
You have some of the best and careful explanations of how to make our traditional dishes. This is the best instructional I have seen on how to make our Puerto Rican pasteles. Beautifully done!
Pasteles are indeed a delightful treat. They not only offer rich flavors but also embody cultural traditions and family gatherings. There's something special about enjoying food that's been passed down through generations.
Sure will. Sorry been alil tied up with the business that I havent been able to post. But this week I will. Thank you for supporting us. I am not Puerto Rican, but I love the food and have made it myself. Pastels are the best when made using real banana leafs not the paper to rap them. My Puerto Rican friends moms or grandmothers made then at Xmas and they would always give me some but I moved and I lost my supply so I had to make them myself. I still have some banana leafs in my freezer so I will try your recipe. I have been to PR 7 times starting in the 60s and the food was great in San Juan, but the last time I was there 2014 it was almost impossible to find Puerto Rican food. How sad is that! Thanks for keeping the food alive.
I would love to see your meals in the frozen food section. As a Puerto Rican I know your foods are delicious and it would be great to have them readily available to me.
Love your channel the pasteles try making and adding one to two potatoes and pumpkin🤤much more softer. When soaking the green bananas and all other viandas add milk to the water and pinch of salt so they won’t darken.
It looks delicious I make my definitely than that in the mix of the Green bananas and yautia we also put in Spanish pumpkin and a can of carnation milk adobo and the juices of the meat broth and salt and we also wrap the paper with the plantain leaves and all the things you did we just wrap it way different than you just did it and everybody does it differently and always it comes out the same way at the long run thank you for sharing your way of making of making Pasteles enjoy your Sunday and GB 🙏🌹
Trow two thru the screen, that is making me crave them right now. The pastel looks delicious! The tutorial was beautifully done. Thank you for doing such a beautiful job of keeping Boricua cooking traditions alive. God bless.
I’m Sicilian, love all Latin foods but I have to say pasteles are more work then home made ravioli or manicotti but your recipe looks soooo delicious I’m gonna make these. Wish you could open a restaurant in Chicago where I live, we’d be there every other day!!!😂😋😋😋💖🇵🇷💖🇮🇹💖💋
Im not Puerto Rican, but love the food and have learned much from this channel. I tend to put my own twist on the recipes, depending on what ingredients we have at home.
Just love your channel and food, Born and raised in NYC but living in North Carolina for the past 7 years. I’m hoping I can order your pastelles in February
Thank you! You always make it so easy to make and look so delicious. Mine turned out great. I have made these for years but was always looking to see them made. I am Native American from Montana married to a Puerto Rican and we have five children who love Puerto Rican food. I am a pretty good cook but always looking to perfect with that Puerto Rican flavor. My husband says I am a Puerto Rican at heart, I love his foods and cook it all the time.
Thank you so much for sharing that recipe. It looks absolutely amazing. My grandmother's from Puerto Rico, and we used to make these at Christmas time with her family. I really do appreciate your advice. Thank you so very much, Joe tevendiga.
Awesome recipe. Thank you. I purchased the Grandma Ann Grater. It's a updated version. I added your Freakin code word and received a discount and a extra Grating blade. I'm in Florida now but I used to live in Queens and I ate at your restaurant several times. Food was always great and I miss your restaurant. God Bless.
I love your videos! So Puerto Rican authentic. I have been afraid to do pasteles because it looks so complicated but you made it so simple, easy, and fun. Your beautiful smile and "and just like that" has inspired me to do pasteles. :-)
You make it look so easy, lol. I make my own pasteles every year too but I've never put my sofrito in to the masa. I'm going to try that trick this year. I also love that machine you use and I'm going to see if I can convince my husband to buy it for me for Christmas. My knuckles can't take anymore grating, lol. Thanks for posting all these wonderful videos.
Thank you soooooo much Freakin’ Rican. I bought your recommended machine and am now making amazing Rican Pasteles. Love ya Bro’ you’re killing it. Please keep the boricua recipes together. I want to go eat at your restaurant. I’m going to look into that. Xoxo and God Bless you.
I ❤️ your channel which celebrates our Boriqua 🇵🇷 heritage!! Your pasteles are savory reminders of holiday celebrations, but which should be enjoyed more often, since pasteles are truly a culinary delight! I hope to visit your restaurant in the near future since I’m in the mood for pasteles! 😉 Felicidades! ❤️😘
My mother would have loved that grating machine. As a child, I watched her make pasteles the old fashioned way, using the dreaded box grater method. It took forever. I made them once using the same method and then I swore that I would never make them again. It was too labor intensive. I love your video; you make pasteles like my mom, minus the box grater. lol
Thanks for this video! Your detailed process make it easy to understand. I've made Pasteles in the past, and each time I play your video as a refresher!
Your videos crack me up, but they are so in depth. You make it look so easy, but finally I got to see how they are made instead of begging my Papi to buy them for me all the time. Thank you for this video. You have no idea how happy I am to know that I can (possibly) make these on my own. Gracias, gracias, gracias!!! :)
+Emily Medina Your very welcome.. Yeah go for it. Im sure youll do an amazing job.. Its really easy just takes some time. But its so worth it! visit our website. www.thefreakinricanrestaurant.com
I used to help my aunt to make pasteles and I remember that we would saute the fatback and ham. Then we would add the Sofrito and tomato sauce. After about 10 minutes we would add the pernil. Then add the rest of your ingredients and let it cook. DELICIOUS!!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! because of this video I learned to make PR 🇵🇷 Pasteles. My family absolutely loves them and enjoy the flavor. Thank you for sharing your recipe !! Delicious !!!

Haven’t had them in ages she had moved to Florida than back to PR than back to Florida she comes up by us at the end of July praying that we makes them since she will be here for about two weeks 😁. I’m gonna try to do them by myself with your recipe and surprise her. Thanks much for your recipe.

I just want to say thank you so much for you video on how to make pasteles de guineo. It was the first time I ever made pasteles. I cooked them for Christmas and I was so amazed and happy that they tasted so good and my family and I enjoyed them very much . Your recipe was the easiest out of so many videos that I watched and compared. Keep up the good work and thank you once again
+Silvia Hunter How are you Silvia. It was totally a pleasure. This is what I love to do. Im glad I was able to help you . And your family was able to enjoy a home cooked tradition like pasteles. Thank you so much for commenting. Please if you have a moment like us on facebook and instagram facebook.com/thefreakinricanrestaurant and on Instagram under thefreakinricanrestaurant. Thanks a million. Well be posting a new video this week.
In a much larger pot my mother and grandmothers would cook the tosino/fat back first. Remove/put aside then in the rendered oil from tosino cook the ham and remove/ put aside then add the sofrito, etc. then put ham/tosino back in then add/brown the pork and so on. That’s how I learned to do it and continue till today. It takes time and the end result is delicious. I’m sure for the video purpose, throwing everything in at once was easier 🤷🏽♀️
These pasteles was made wit lots of love lol. My tia was the only one that seasoned the hell out of the meat nd masa. Nd now you lol. I will be following your videos!!

DAMN, I love your channel. I feel like I've watched your videos so much that visiting the restaurant would be like visiting family! In all seriousness, I tackled my first round of pasteles yesterday for the first time in my life, and I nearly cried I was so happy. I'm vegetarian, so finding the right recipe for filling was a challenge. That said, I found a recipe and came back to this video to enhance the other recipe. Plus, there's no beating your tutorials and techniques. Thank you so much for your generosity and for sharing your love of Puerto Rican food. Much amor y gratitud desde Joliet, IL, brother.
Ricardo Gonzalez, I hv Vegeterians & Vegans in the Family, tried a few ways for the filling, the best one, if You like Gandules (Pigeon Peas) guisados with little pieces of potatoes, try with that, it's the way My daughter loves them, use some of the caldo of the Gandules for the Masa (doe) You can boil a Vegetable cube or powder in a cup of water to give more taste to the Gandules & Masa. Bon Apetit. From Newark, NJ
Ricardo - thank you soooo much for your kind words and for sharing you experience! It makes me so happy that you are cooking AND having fun! It's all about the food and sharing it with the people you love. Dios te bendiga brother!
I'm so glad I watch this video I been trying to learn how to do pasteles for awhile and I watch other video and they add other stuff but you made it so easy and simple. 😀

+Xio Morris How are you? Awe Thanks. On the videos , yes I smile alot. In person people tend to say I look mean.. How could I? No I do sometimes look mean. But yes Im happy 24/7 . Thank you Im glad you enjoyed the videos.
Very good teacher. I've never eaten or made Puerto Rican food but I really like your channel & the care you take to instruct. Looks & sounds delicious!
Really enjoyed watching your Video. I'm Portuguese and My Boyfriend is 100% Puerto Rican and 11 years ago I fell in Love with not just Him but also Pasteles LOL 😂 So I'm trying to learn how to make them and this was very Helpful. But I have to tell you Please don't say "Just Like so" Instead maybe just say "Just like That" That will be a More Suitable Sentence 😊 Not making fun just wanted to Point that out. You helped me I can help you too 😊 Gracias 🙏
I UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN STYLE AND RECIPE TO MAKING PASTELES BUT...... I'm Puertorican, I have been making pasteles almost all my life and I'm in my late sixties AND is the first time in my life that I see someone adding sofrito directly to the masa. Traditionally, Sofrito is added to the meat during the cooking process, the broth of the meat that has all that delicious seasonings and SOFRITO is added to the masa. More seasonings and achiote oil is added to the masa to your taste. Just my two cents that's all😅😅😅😅
+Camelia Molina Aye gracia Camelia. Me haces sentir tan bien. Im glad you enjoyed the video.. They really came out delicious . I love you for following!
I really admire your videos.. I love cooking but theres so many things i havent done and love and you make me wanna cook them all.. +The Freakin Rican Restaurant Hi, thank you for that info. I did hear you speak about purchasing the machine on your video. But I don't make pasteles enough to warrant buying one...it would just collect dust, but it is a fabulous time saving machine...saves "years" of time...thanks again for your wonderful, delicious recipes. Maybe I'll see you on the street at some of the street fairs...would love to taste you pastele!! Yours looks like the best one I have ever seen!!!

Wow!!! That looks delicious!!! Thanks for sharing. I've never made pasteles, my mom and grandma use to make them. I was always intimidated by all the work, but I think I will try this recipe over the weekend. I would also like to buy that machine. Thank you again.

+Odettesharesherheart Yes I tie them separate. But almost everyone ties them by 2's. Thank you for watching the videos.
The ones that I tie back to back are the ones that have chili in them. Easier to decipher which is which.
Odettesharesherheart
mine too!!!
That's how we do it
My mom, tied them up the same way! Fondest memories of parchment paper oiled w/achote oil! Great kitchen aromas!

It’s interesting noting the subtle differences in how each house makes their pasteles. Buen provecho!
Thanksgiving is coming and I’m here to learn 😊
Welcome. Did you make any of the recipes?

+Mark Garcia They really are. Try to make them and youll never be without. Thank you for following us!
Just my two cents that's all😅😅😅😅
I make your recipes and they come out so good. My family loves it👍. Making the pasteles this weekend.
