Funny enough, in comic book canon, Constantine does mention that there is an earth where he is a dark haired american man in LA
What I'd heard is that comic John mentions movie John exists in his world, but either way...The comic's writers making the movie technically canon is one of the things I love about the movie. And with the more comic accurate John being a regular cast member on Legends of Tomorrow, I just keep hoping that Keanu will cameo in the show. The two Johns meeting? That would be awesome.
Well you know, the Comic book universe is extremely expansive. Almost anything you can imagine can be canon in the comic universe. So when people say that " _person isn't x/z/y_ ", they're usually, wrong. Now this out of the way, I'd love to see a crossover movie with Matt Ryan Constatine and Keanu Reeves Constantine. I can almost imagine the bickering between the two ^^

Peter Stormare and Tilda Swinton are so good in this film.
Tilda Swinton I think was pretty okay as Gabriel in the movie. But Peter Stormare? Holy shit he was not just good. He was AWESOME as Lucifer.
Peter Stormare's Lucifer scene was one of the best "character" portrayals of all movies I have ever seen.
The character in quotes insinuates that he's actually Lucifer lol
The actor is generally unappreciated. I love when actors that arent as A rate get to shine like that.
Peter Stormare in this and Tim Curry in Legend are the best depictions hands down. I love both approaches.

Stormare’s portrayal of Lucifer and Viggo Mortenson’s portrayal from The Prophecy are some of the best depictions of THE Fallen Angel himself. They’re both creepy and disturbing, almost to the point of nightmare fuel.
Tilda Swinton's Gabriel is the best god damn adaptation of Gabriel I've seen in a while.
Better than Christopher Walken?

I never understood the hate for this film. A film can be good while shying away from the source material. Totally agree. They even killed Shia Labeouf. What more could you ask for?
Shia should be killed horribly in every film, it could be his thing. "What? You want a part in my film? Well, you have to die horribly".
I'd take Shia as a sidekick. Finally he would have a safe harbor where there isn't anyone trying to use him as prey.

damian martinez not only that it’s taken him a long time to shake off his role as Neo. Just like how Laurence Fishburn (probably misspelled that) can’t shake his role as Morpheus.
He did great as Constantine, he does great with all his roles, I don't understand it either. I probably wouldn't have even watched the movie if Keanu wasn't Constantine.
I thought he just was about the furthest thing they could of casted from the source.
It annoyed the hell outta me...I do like Reeves though as an actor...Just./..not...this...role.
For awhile he had some emoting issues. Which worked great as Neo, but not so great in other roles.
We don't hate him....we just respect his long career where he has never showcased any real acting ability
Peter Stormare did one of the best portrayals of Lucifer I have ever seen. Also great was Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer in The Prophecy and Robert Deniro was fantastic in Angel Heart.

Meh. They were somewhat... odd... And sourpusses as well. A wee bit lacking in the Sense Of Humor department.
I was born in Texas, raised in Florida, and I love the depiction of Lucifer here because it always makes me think of the southern con-man preachers in tents.

Precisely. Even the slick sweaty look he has, the accent and such. I haven't read the comics so I don't know how he is portrayed in them but just from the movie I always thought of this Lucifer being the ultimate con-man just like a preacher. Same tricks and all. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
I'm sure that was in some ways intentional because the comic version is completely different, so more kudos to the film in my opinion.

It's not the Constantine we wanted from the comics, but it's still good as it's own standalone story.
I too have a special place in my heart for this movie.
To be fair it was fun to walk and enjoyable was keano the best gone Constantine no but am I gonna say he did a horrible dumb no he's actually pretty good and at least they kept it at the source material and they didn't make Constantine a Broadway singer😊
I never understood them making Chaz an angel at the end. As far as christian lore goes, angels are not humans who have died, angels are a different species all together.
They only called this Constantine because they thought people might confuse it with Hellraiser if they called it Hellblazer.
This WAS a great movie...but it wasn't really a Constantine movie. If they had made it it's own thing, I think this movie could have been the next Army of Darkness. It could have been one of the cult-film Greats.
To be fair, Constantine is the easiest character in the world to get involved into a plot, he has a power just for that "Synchronicity Wave Travelling" it means that plot convenience is literally one of his powers. The weird demon possession can be explained by Momon doing a test of how hard it is to get into this world without the help of Jesus-o-Vitamines by making a minion try it, and it can be seen that demons can make it into this world (the bug demon) and not just possessing people.
Man I love this film. I swear though there are few things better than finding a content creator for the first time and marathoning their catalogue. Seeing different takes on films you already like and seeing reviews of films that other creators don't touch on.
The "...finger licking good!" dialogue delivery scene will be forever lodged in my brain.
I've often wondered how many takes there were of that scene. And out of all those takes, what we see was determined to be the best one.
So just imagine how bad those attempts must have been......
As a fan of the comic, I loved this movie, except for Shia. I think Keanu got the pissy part of John down, and the smirk. I still think that this movie was the reason we got the show and Matt and Charlie and Harold-if only for a little bit.
Constantine almost made me want to convert. If you could be a badass warrior like that for the lord, I think it's a whole lot more appealing.
Best scene is when Keanu is floating up to heaven and flips off the devil.
The bar entrance thing should be pretty obvious. Only those with the "Sight" can see through the card.

I thought this film was the shit , even when people were hating on Reeves.He plays it perfectly. Weiss, who I usually find creepy, works here.
I've seen this many times, and likely will a couple more.A modern classic, period.

I just realized this movie was supposed to be about the comic book... I legitimately thought this movie was just some random movie about demons... holy shit
when the first trailers came out for this movie, I assumed that too, but its mainly because it was called Constantine instead of Hellblazer like the comics, although at that time I was only familiar with the title of the comics, I didn't know much about john conntantine at the time but that movie is the reason I became intrigued with the hellblazer series.
Balthazar is played by Gavin Rossdale from the band Bush. I really should watch the whole video before leaving any comments.

I just saw Constantine myself: you left out the middle finger John gives Lu as he ascends to heaven. That was the funniest moment in the film for me.

I love Constantine as a guilty pleasure. I know it's not comic accurate or well written or well acted but Keanu is fun and Peter Stormare rocks as lucifer. You should really check out Angel Heart with Mickey Rooney & Robert DeNiro, you'll thank me.
I'm pretty sure I'm one of the biggest fans of this film believe me I have one of the same forearm tattoos that keanu reeves has in this.

I loved this film and Keanu as John Constantine.
This is the only depiction of Constantine that I know. My fiance tells tales of a "true" comic book character that I'll have to look into. But I have always seriously LOVED this movie. My Halloween costume this year is the archangel Gabriel from the movie...but great review!
Good choice of costume and yeah i love this movie too it may not be an accurate adaption by any stretch of the imagination but in its essences it works, but yes please read the graphic novels if you like the film you like them too.
Actually I think the demon that possessed the girl was suppose to be like one of demons later in the Hospital, to serve the bad guy, so that's why it was weird, and why the Baltazar was watching, he was making an army.
The girl who said "Holy water?" when the sprinklers were activated was actually Michelle Monaghan. She originally had a much larger role in the film as someone Constantine had a sexual relationship with in a "friends with benefits" setting. She was cut from the movie because they wanted to make John seem more lonely and it would have gotten in between a possible romance that was hinted between Rachel Weiss' character and Constantine.

thanks for responding, that cool it was left open-ended. I just felt she not going to live as human so tried to get to heaven. that failed then she felt pain and gave up on trying at all and fingered she had some fav in hell just my opinion but it could go either way plus if they had a sequel I bet she still be alive and not dead I truly believe that. lol
I can't think of a more underated movie than Constantine. Personally, I like it leagues better than The Dark Knight. This really deserves a trilogy. This movie praticly demands respect that it deserves.

Dude it is downright one of my favorites too, I can only commend you for this. It's an amazing film on it's own and a half decent comics film.

I love this movie. Passive was an awesome song
the ps2 game and movie had so much extra production design and world building that was so awesome when i was 15-16 and was really the first bonus content I'd ever discovered therefore this movie holds a special place in my heart. The game was an extension of the world with whole levels in hell and awesome weapons and secrets to find to learn more about the world. Really great underrated film

1. Peter Stormare killing it as Lucifer
2. Me being disappointed when I found out "Yellow River"-cigarettes don't exist. Would've loved to try them out.

This is one of those early 2000's comic movies that does the whole dark and gritty thing, only it does it super well with plenty of lore for comic book fans. But also explains just enough for the average movie goer to understand who these people are, why they're important, and what they can and can't do, as well as the threat of demons. While also finding a good mix of horror, comedy, action, and mystery blending it all rather seemlessly for the most part. And while it's not as big budget grand scale eye candy like comic movies have gotten lately it's one of those hidden gems that I have to agree is one of my favorite movies to go back and watch every couple of years.
I love this movie so much and it still has some of my favourite angels on it.
It'd be kinda neat if they take inspiration from this for the justice leagie dark stuff. Also I'm surprised you didn't include constantine being a badass and flippig the devil off while floating up to heaven before he got grabbed lol

@@kennethv5250 I have definitely heard the myth/conspiracy though think you would have to cherry-pick history pretty hard to believe it. I hadn't realized Mexico was another one of the areas they moved to, Chili and Argentina are more well known I suppose due to the conspiracy shows.. I don't know the exact numbers but my great grandfather and a bunch of other Ukrainians who had fought with Germany ended up coming to Canada since they couldn't return home.
Fantastic Review mate! I really like Constantine for pretty much the same reasons as you so it was nice to see somebody highlight both the good and the bad in this film. On a side note, I also really like how you appreciate good things i bad movies, however minor they might be, it really makes for a more intresting viewing compared to other critic's who generally just like to bash the ever living shit out of things. As a result, I really do prefer this style over something like Nostaliga Critic does. Keep up the good work!

Just watched this movie again the other night, I notice new details every time I see it. When I was younger I thought it was kinda boring but now it’s pretty badass.

I actually like this film. It’s not really like the comics, but it’s still got great characters, and some pretty decent writing. Now, that said, don’t get me started on the network that cancelled the Matt Ryan show. It’s kick ass!
im just wondering if you can review Freddy vs Jason. i know there is a lot of lore to those two horror icons but the movie has only one noticeable Easter egg to the movie is jason goes to hell in the ending but its just two famous horror icons brawling out and it spawned other V.S. movies like Alien VS Predator, Boa VS PYthon and something called Shartopus and WolfWhale if i got the title right im not sure i only seen Promo's.
I love Lawrence’s stylish direction. I read the novelization before the movie came out so I knew everything that was going to happen but the direction and tone made it fresh for me.

I know it's a departure from the comics...but on it's own, I love this movie and have re-watched it many times.
As soon as you said "Catholic Dogma" I got the urge to write this comment as I'm curious to see wether or not you'd ever consider dissecting the film "Dogma" by Kevin Smith 🤔
Also your review of Demon Knight persuaded me to purchase the film as I loved Tales from the Crypt but heard very mixed things (as episodes were either hit or miss I thought the film would be a miss, clearly not)

Yes YES! I also loved Constantine. They really tried to keep it in line with the comics as much as a movie could. And albeit over the top and cheesy, it's also one of my favourite movies ever. I've seen it at least 15 times :))
Okay... how did I not know that Tilda Swinton was in in this? I mean, yeesh. You have shown that a lot of movies you have covered had stars I actually enjoy.
After watching the movie again recently and listening to the review I think I figured out why that beginning scene with the possessed girl is in the movie. Apart from setting up Constantine's character it also foreshadows the climax of the movie. The begining and the climax involve John trying to stop a possessed character and his usual method (chanting and charms) not working. Even the demons being sent back are similar. The first demon falling to the ground within the mirror and the last demon falling through a version of our world in Hell that can be seen as a mirror.
I loved it.

Anyways, just watched this movie, and since I don't know the comics, it didn't matter to me wether it was accurate or not so appart from a few things that felt weird or not perfectly well written I enjoyed the movie. You've been one of my favorite TH-cam reviewers for a really long time now, but I'm curious... I never see any mention of you working with anybody else in your videos. You know, groups like HiddenBlock, Normal Boots, etc... They all have individual reviewers with their own shows, but they collaborate together sometimes. You put out a lot of content for this to be just a hobby of yours, and not at least have it be a side job, minimum.
Do you work alone? Have any help with your content production? Is TH-cam your full-time job, or do you also work somewhere? I'm just curious
Yeah this is pretty much a one man show I write, shoot and edit everything myself on a production budget in the minuses, i have a friend who proof reads the script but thats it, I don't have any kind of pull to work with a company, tried it once but the company was more ramshackle then I am, and this is only "job" I have, though job is a bit of an exaggeration cause job implies a wage and I'm nowhere near there, I also do amateur theatre but thats not really anything to do with youtube

Wandering by *checks watch* six years late but I recently got my hands on the novelization for this movie and was amused to realize it fixes, or at least addresses, most of the issues you had with the movie. Things like the guy carrying the Spear not being so obvious about it, extensive mentions of other religions, and lots of small explanations, like why water sends you to hell. There is also an entire cut character that I was deeply saddened was not included (Ellie, if that was an existing character) who was a demon *cough* friend of Constantine. Best of all there is no nicotine gum, that final scene instead featuring the shotgun one last time.
This is partially due, I'm sure, to the page count giving the story more room to breathe but it is also fairly safe to assume that this is based off an earlier version of the screenplay, before it was run through the corporate and test audience shredder. I would recommend picking it up if this sounds interesting to you. *Tips hat and wanders off again*

The climax wherein John outsmarted Lucifer and showed the latter the finger while going to Heaven was so gold.

I actually liked this movie a lot, though part of that is probably because I didn't know the comics until after I saw it. Way I see it, movies like this may not be perfect adaptations, but they introduce people to the greater story elsewhere.
This film is amazing.
I'm not sure what they mention in the comic but the book based on this movie mentions more about how other Faith's coexist in a world with demons and such. I think it was basically like "any faith is good, the power is in the belief of the conviction" but it's been a hot second since I read it so I can't remember exactly how they put it. I like Shia labeouf so this movie was great all around for me. I like the extra info you mentioned that by just watching the movie a viewer wouldn't know. I'm currently binge watching reviews and it's nice.

@@deusdeaconReviews No idea. If it was just Constantine and End of Days it'd be a pretty obvious Christian/Catholic Action Fantasy deal, but Brothers Grimm kinda throws everything off. Unless they're all classified under generic 'Fantasy Action'. Which would be annoying because, as mentioned previously, two of the three have much more in common with each other than the odd one one out.
