    Andrew Divoff is a visual effect in of himself. No matter how schlocky the film is, I can't take my eyes off him. He revels in his performance. If he just phoned it in, or if it were a lesser actor, the Djinn would have been completely inconsequential.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      speaking of just phoning it in you have wish master 2 to use as a "divoff not caring" example and then john novak as an example of someone who's just shite to compare and contrast the two.

      ah I know how that would go wrong if its Divoff style you'll end up killing me in some cruelly ironic and possibly very silly way, if its Jhon Novak style you'll do something incredibly fricken random screwing the irony completely and then kill me anyway.

    I think the reason why he didnt do anything with the "wish you go away" is one part cause the jin is shocked someone ask an obvious wish that he's a tad stunned. and one part is he doesn't want to go monkey paw on himself.

      Actually it's rather simple, the Jinn has immense power but can't use any of it unless someone wishes for something, something the Genie from Aladdin made clear. While normally the Jinn is able to twist the words around, here "I want YOU to leave," is so simple but so concrete he can't twist it. There's no other way it can be interpreted other than him leaving the building thus he's effectively forced to obey it.

  • @pompe221
    @pompe221 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    What would happen if someone felt that the djinn hadn't fulfilled their wish? For example, what if the sultan had told the djinn, "What you showed me is not wondrous, it was horrifying. I am not astonished, I'm disgusted. You failed."
    As for Alex getting visions, I'm going to assume that it was part of the imprisoning spell the magician put into the gem, that whoever released the djinn would also be granted the power to see what the djinn is really like to prevent them from making any wishes.
    31:54 Did Alex just create a time paradox?

    no no, the moral of Wishmaster isn't "be careful what you wish for" it's "be specific what you wish for"
    For instance, take Homer Simpson's wish for the perfect turkey sandwich. He made sure to specify that it wouldn't be a cursed turkey or anything like that, but he didn't specify how juicy it should be, so in the end the turkey was a little dry.

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    the djinn is a better hellspawn movie monster than pinhead that's for sure...he has an actual...you know...purpose and motive...grant someone 3 wishes opens up a gate to let his fellow djinn out into the earth...an actual...hellraiser....pinhead on the other hand....do the xenobites even have any actual purpose

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      the cenobites (which means member of a religious order) basically worship pain pleasure and sensation, so their purpose is to do what we see them do in the films really, well in the the first and second film anyway, the rest of the films is any bodies guess.

    • @noone-pf5zq
      @noone-pf5zq 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      sooo hostel with kinky black leather wearing hellspawns instead of humans?....well they certainly have the pain aspect down though I aint ever see them deliver any pleasure outside of like...that one moment with frank in the first ever movie where he has sensory overload and literally jizzes himself....and that was the book or something I believe not even the movie...either way...its a rather weak motive and purpose don't you think...just...sadists for the sake of it...specially when its not even survival horror where the main characters only purpose is just...you know...a battle for survival with movie monsters like freddy or chucky or Jason or even the likes of alien or predator etc etc

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hey Im just explaining what the cenobites are about I agree with you, hellraiser is a huge misnomer personally i prefer hellraiser cause as you said yourself its not really the traditional kind of horror film, and yes pinhead is definitely not a slasher

    • @noone-pf5zq
      @noone-pf5zq 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh err did I come off as upset or offended...my apologies I certainly wasn't was just having a friendly chat and sharing thoughts not trying to correct you or defend a point or anything
      as for hellraiser...its alright but I prefer a more classic survival horror,or as its more commonly known slasher film style of horror...to me the entertainment doesn't really come from the scare factor...at my age being frightened by a film is unlikely nor do I care for gore that has no appeal,to me the entertainment quality comes from the individuals struggle for survival...their attempts at solving the problem aka surviving....how to stop what is essentially to them an "unstoppable force"....which is why I'm fonder of more classic 80s survival horror like the Jason and freddy series...even if the protagonists all tend to be insufferable highly idiotic teenage twats most of the time

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats fair enough just wanted to make sure we were on the same level but yeah i agree that hellraiser is definitely not everyones cup of tea

    I think the point of the "I want you to leave" bit is that it's a wish that does not involve the person making the wish. Another person who made such a wish, the bum, also managed to get away unharmed.. at least until his soul got stolen.
    If instead the guy said "I want you to get out of my face" or something, the Jinn would be able to interpret it in such a way as to harm the guy.

    07:30 I wonder if the vague connection to the Djinn and being able to "see" what happens to the people who die from the wishes the Djinn grants is a nod to the original Pumkinhead movie because something similar happens in that film.
    In Pumkinhead the person who summoned Punkinhead is able see the people who Pumpkinhead kill as a form of punishment for condemning people to death by summoning the Pumpkinhead to settle a grudge.

    This is the kind of series that seems like its not bad but could have been better in a few areas, like being cleverer with the screwing over wishes, maybe do away with it being wishes as most of them don't make a wish they just say they'd like something, do away with random screaming woman who seems entirely unconnected to everything for ages.

    The fuck you line has got to be one of the funniest lines imagine if that happened in Scream or the Ring the person just cussing out the evil monster trying to kill them over the phone.
    "You have seven days to live"
    "Fuck You"
    "The killer is inside the house"

    29:58 For getting this question answered who that "Painting killer guy" was. It was a damn good version of Lon Chaney. A silent film actor who played that character.
    Here you can see a picture of Chaney as that killer character:

      some women are... to die for.
      and also the whole "arrow to the knee" is reference to marriage (on bended knee) and retirement, not a literal arrow.

      "arrow to the knee" is reference to marriage" I'm sorry, but i hope that was a joke, otherwise its the kinda of overthinking, pseudo intellectual bollocks, i frequently rail against.

      My apologies I now realise your talking about when its used in skyrim, and not saying the film is making a reference to those things and if you think thats a weird assumption to make trust i've heard weird theories about about films.

    • @Shiirow
      @Shiirow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      historically thats what the phrase means, a joking way of saying a man married and retired from frivolous pursuits to settle down and raise a family. the same way one would refer to their wife as "the old ball and chain" in a way insinuate being in prison. Skyrim just used the phrase and popularized it until it became a meme. you wouldnt realize how so many people actually took the turn of phrase to literally mean the man got shot in the knee with an arrow.
      And no worries, I realize I should have been more succinct with my comment and its meaning.

    Techically, Djinn (air spirit) in the "Wishmaster" is closer to Ifrit (fire spirit). In arabian folklore, Ifrits were malevolent and prone to, well, creatively interprent their masters wishes, or outright kill them upon release from the lamp.

    You're right, the whole be careful what you wish for thing only works when the genie doesn't want you to make any wishes. This genie has no reason to be an asshole if he wants people to make wishes.

    My thoughts on the lack of fish out of water theme, perhaps he’s absorbing the memories of the people he kills and in doing so he learns about modern day things or modern things for the 90’s but that’s just my thoughts

    So thinking about it what would happen if say the person who woke up the Djinn died before he could grant the three wishes, he'd basically be stuck as the rule is he specifically has to grant three wishes of the person who freed him, but if that person dies then he literally can never accomplish that. Surprised the movies never tried that.

    man robert eglund, tony todd, and kane hodder, and all 3 get taken out by the djinn. hmm freddy would be tricky but i think if he could food candyman he might have a shot jason doesnt speak at all though so it'd be kind of like jason vs tina again just with the djinns powers a bit more so.. question would be could he make jason no longer a regenerating immortal zombie without someones wish involved?

    @23:28 "That which is eternal cannot die" is a complete bastardization of the H.P. Lovecraft quote" That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die. " from "The Call of Cthulhu".

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible thats it a complete bastardisation because it's not intended to imitate the call of Cthulhu at all, it just happens to sound a little like it. after all theres no other Cthulhu references

    • @thomtheaccountant5638
      @thomtheaccountant5638 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a bit unsure what you mean by this. Are you intimating that a reference is not a reference because there are not multiple examples of same? After all, I provided the full quote and also the "reference" as a comparison. But you seem to be saying that it might (or might not) be a reference because you know the inner thoughts of the writer ("... because it's not intended to imitate the call of Cthulhu at all,..."). I think that from the comparison of that which was said in the film, to that which was quoted from HPL, himself, undeniably confirms it is a reference, regardless if there are no other similar comparisons made. To be fair, how about we call it a "shout out" instead? After all, multiple sources were sampled in this film, by your own admission.

    • @Quandry1
      @Quandry1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sentiment and basis behind the quote from this movie is not necessarily From HP Lovecraft. It's a sentiment that has existed in various forms long before H.P. Lovecraft ever wrote a single word. You can find versions of it as far back as ancient gods and their immortality as just one example. Much of what is presented here about the Djinn itself actually extends from ancient myths about them in particular. Things like twisting wishes because they don't like granting them and even further that they can't grant wishes for themselves. Being seen as a creature of Fire and some of their other aspects that many of the ancient stories about them are more warnings about avoiding them and not getting mixed up with them than anything.
      I really wish that people wouldn't attribute everything horror based these days to him. I think it goes fairly overboard. Since not everything that he puts forth is original. They are simply one mans interpretations of the great many things that he didn't understand and frightened him. He just happened to present many of them in a rather compelling fashion.
