    As soon as the issue of money came up, I said to myself "Well, this movie is shit." That and all the wasted ammo... The only thing I liked was the idea of zombies being mesmerized by fireworks, I thought that was a pretty good idea.

    I remember reading once that this movie was not originally intended to be an "of the Dead" film, that the original title of the movie was "Dead Reckoning". The name "Land of the Dead" was slapped on it toward the end of production because the studio thought that would make it sell better. If it's true, it goes a long way toward explaining why this movie doesn't fit well with the others in the series.

    35:35, George A. Romero is the George Lucas of zombie films

  • @deusdeaconReviews
    @deusdeaconReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    I'm honestly not sure, it truly baffles me, but i suspect one of the main reasons was hero worship of Romero, with reviewers and the directors who spoke about the film less talking about land of the dead more simply glad that Romero was back on horror. And we'd soon get another classic like Dawn but i think their encouragement back fired cause let me tell you no one is defending Survival of the dead

    • @bigk9000
      @bigk9000 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do wonder if this is a case where he's just out of practice/touch, or if it's a sorta George Lucas situation where his past movies were great because they were a group effort. Films created by a team of talented individuals who helped balance out Romero's shortcomings. But now since he's world renowned as a legendary filmmaker who gave birth to the modern zombie movie genre, he became surrounded by blinded "yes men", so he had no one to call him out on his ideas, bad or good.

  • @SuperSwordman1
    @SuperSwordman1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    My problem is that Romero made the zombies TOO human. Don't get me wrong, the human-like elements in Dawn and Day where great! But now we have them forming plans, using firearms (yes I know Bub did, but it's highly suggested he was a soldier in life. I doubt Big Daddy got rifle training to that level), basically BEING human. I get what he was going for, but he fumbled.

    • @Nooziterp1
      @Nooziterp1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not only this but Big Daddy fired his rifle just after it was immersed in water. I don't know much about firearms, but surely they don't work when full of water.

    1. That Revolution thing made me think that it was supposed to be a thing but changed halfway through production
    2. As someone who ever tried airsoft, why didn’t the shooters actually changed to semi automatic, (when they emptied a whole magazine as you said)
    3. When you said “and no one talks like that” I could not hear what Dennis hopper was saying
    4. Also what was that guard who tried to kill John Leguizamo’s character (can’t spell his name), wearing? He looked like a Mussolini cosplayer without the hat

  • @multitudeofidols
    @multitudeofidols 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like how one of the recurring criticisms of _The Walking Dead_ is how people manage to let zombies sneak up on them when Romero preceded that stupidity by fives years. As for Romero losing touch, there did seem to be something off given how despite spending the prime of his career filming in Pittsburgh, he filmed his final films in Toronto, Ontario where he lived for the last years of his life.
    I will say this: if someone took this script and made some adjustments/improvements, this could work as an allegory for what's going on now during the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.: the rich, bunkered up and protected, pushing lower classes out into a dangerous world and risk their lives just to help them make more money. Then, instead of the zombies out for revenge, they could just be treated as a natural threat. Of course, the Kaufman character would have to be a Trump proxy and I can't imagine someone writing a character like how Donald Trump actually behaves.

  • @deusdeaconReviews
    @deusdeaconReviews  11 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    If that's what you take from my simple review of a movie fair enough. All I'll say is I don't agree with the politics of this movie and they are forced and used in a heavily propagandized way which is a big problem with this film but its not the only one I talk about.

    I just found your channel, and that's why I'm posting now and not when it went up, but I'm enjoying your commentary immensely. The reason I'm posting is because I'm a native of Uniontown Pennsylvania, the town they are raiding for supplies in the opening scene and I have always hated that scene, not just because we have never had in my lifetime, since possibly the 20's or 30's, and "Oompah" band and don't even have a gazebo in a public park. Romero is nominally a native and should know that, but he had to make my town even more of a hayseed hick-ville than it actually is all to fit his heavy-handed narrative.

    But Mary Sue was right to let them go? The point was they were contempt to 'live' as they were, doing what they remember from being alive. Then after the humans gunned them all down, which they didn't need to do, as they were distracted. That's when Big Daddy rounded them all up to get revenge, but since Mary Sue didn't care to live with the shmucks and their revenge is over. They agree to let them live, thinking they'll live in peace.

    Now that I think about it Romero's zombies have always been a bit different then how zombies are mostly seen recently. Even in the first movie they weren't completely mindless, they were afraid of fire. So even back then they had at least some some form of thought or at least fear, unlike how zombies are mostly seen today.
    When I think zombies, I think mindless completely. Zombies that have no sense of survival, so they'd walk through fire or fall in water, because they don't actually notice it. Yet Romero's zombies seem to just turn into a different from of humans as the movies have gone on, so much that it really doesn't matter that they are supposed to be zombies anymore, like in this movie.

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      universal only distributed the film and had no creative control, the production companies were atmosphere entertainment MM AKA one guy called mark canton, and the other Romero-Grunwald productions, which I'm sure you can tell Romero himself half owned, so I honestly can't see that explanation panning out, and more importantly of all the things i would call Romero and this film in general, "Restrained" is certainly not one of them, if anything it had too much of Romero's "style".

    According to one of my professors, the thing about money is that it only has monetary value when majority of people agree that it has monetary value. Example: gold only has monetary value when people agree that its valuable. Dollar bills are just a type of fabric/paper yet people agree it has monetary value so then it does. In feudal Japan before they used coins they used rice for exchange because it could be grown by some people and and eaten by everyone. Because not everyone grew rice, it was valuable because it was actually useful for survival: food. Money has actually no practical use like that and yet has value all because we all agree it has value. If we didn’t all agree it would have no value except maybe for burning or arts and crafts.

    I always felt the Romero films are not meant to lead into the other as sequels, but are each a stand alone take about the living dead from a different angle. Perhaps I am wrong, but I do not feel the "rules" of one film were meant to inform those that came after. Anyway, enjoy the videos but I wish the audio editing was better as they go from quiet to speaker shaking in an instant.

      Romero could never make direct sequels because he lost the rights to the studio who gave him the money to make those films, so he couldn't use the same charactors. In the opening montage of Land he wanted to use clips from Night ,Dawn and Day but couldn't because of property rights.

    Yeah in a world where every shot counts and accuracy is of the most importance, you wouldn't use automatic weapons. You'd be using large caliber semi-automatic guns to conserve ammo and have some nice stopping power. Undead or not, a .45 is going to slow you down from the sheer force of the bullet.

    This comment may be a little late, but one thing I can say is I think George Romero may have started to lose it with the franchise around the time of Day of the Dead. While that film I think is the best of the series, most of the ideas and non subtle messages from LOTD were in his original script for Day of the Dead, however were cut out due to a reduced budget.

    Wait. How would the survivors know what a jihad is? I’m pretty sure that term wasn’t popular when the apocalypse happened in the first movie.

    11:20 in all the Romero films if you die for any reason you return. The original had some hints that a radiation a satellite brought back was reactivating the primitive part of the brain. The Zack Snyder DOTD said that only the vote turned them into zombies

      17:30 within the economy of Fiddlers Green money has value. Cholo mentions something about buying an apartment inside the tower.

    • @haruruben
      @haruruben 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      18:40 within this little world the materials and labor would still cost money, in a different way. The money would pay people to go out and scavenge the materials and people to assemble the battle tank. Money would serve the same purpose it does today, actually more so because it would now be in limited quantities.

      Why am I defending this movie? Well, I actually like the money mechanic in this world because money’s value in real life is also just as imagined.

      Except if you watch day of the dead (a film taking place before land) you can see dr logan get shot not in the head and never returns as a zombie, with the commentary of which stating that what cause the zombies to rise had actually stopped occurring by the time day came round.

      and yes money has value in fiddlers green, but its established that outside of fiddlers green, there is no civlisation, theres also no guarantee it would be used elsewhere and logic would dictate people would use things with real value not pieces of nicely designed tokens as a trading commodity especially because as you pointed out money is in such short supply, so in the scheme of things out side of fiddlers green money itself is inherently worthless.

    Watched a few of your reviews and like your style... good work. One suggestion. Your volume levels on many reviews are inconsistent. For example, your sign-crashing noise and some of your comment segments are much louder than other parts; it can get pretty annoying.

      Yes I'm aware of the volume issues of the older videos it was because i was still getting to grips with the software, I at least like to think the sound levels are consistent with videos I do now.

    Love how they tried to set up these poor people to do a revolution that never took place. They just got lucky when the zombies showed up and killed all the rich people.

  • @matthewknight5926

    See I know that this film is full of more holes than Swiss cheese, but I still got a soft spot for it, probably due to the fact I would take this over Diary or Survival. I think of the social commentary less like the US government and more along the lines of a Medieval kingdom. You’ve got the ‘king’ (who may or not be Koopa) at the top in his high castle, the lords and ladies (residents of Fiddlers green) below him but still in fancy Livin’. the Knights (guards) who may not live in the castle but still have it better off than the peasants in the streets due to their services, not to mention most of them ride motorcycles and armoured cars like war horses and chariots, and the peasants at the bottom living off scraps. All of this taking place in a Walled off area completely controlled by the king himself. And even the main cast kinda resemble an almost D&D affair. You got the White Bread hero protagonist Fighter, his Friend the marksman archer with a disposition of some kind, the female rogue and literally some companions they are given for story purposes. As for the Zombies? You could see them kinda as Orcs, but they don’t really play too much of a part in the whole medieval thing. Not to mention Cholo steals a Siege Weapon which he uses to threaten Kauffman in his “Castle”
    Obviously me saying all this doesn’t make it an objectively better movie, but it’s still something of a Curiosity to me as a middle ground between George’s Best, and George’s worst. As a reminder that he may have made both in his life, but it’s the good we can see in his career that made George such an amazing Director, and may he inspired many upstarts like me for years to come, and may he rest in peace.....
    But COME MONEY WOULDNT BE WORTH ANYTHING OUTSIDE OF PITTSBURGH!!!
