Neither this movie nor this review are tools to be used to lessen, minimize or extenuate the severity of these allegations.
I read that the SpectreVision production company has dropped Richard Stanley because of these allegations, which is not surprising. I think this likely kills any future plans for a new "Dunwich Horror" film, let alone a third movie. After the failed plans of del Toro's "At the Mountains of Madness", this is yet another blow to the hopes of fans for high-quality Lovecraftian films in the foreseeable future.
another fun fact about Robert E Howard. he helped a lot with Lovecraft's Xenophobia, in letter correspondences he described cultures he was researching. that was the difference between Howard and Lovecraft, Lovecraft was afraid of the unknown, Howard embraced it and celebrated it.
For he knows the gate. He is the gate. He is the gate and it’s key. Past, present and Future are all one within him. An Outer God of unfathomable knowledge. The Mayans... Are still around. The civilization collapsed, but there are still Mayans and speakers of Mayan language. It’s an interesting reference, though I think it’s more to show that Nathan has no clue what he’s doing.
I had always assumed the "blasted heath" would be dark, and black, like charcoal or burnt wood. Seeing being depicted in white was VERY clever, I think. Depending on weather you're using additive or subtractive colours, 'white' is either the presence of ALL, or complete ABSENCE of colour. There's certainly something to be said about the visuals of going from an "imaginary" colour to either a complete saturation / lack of colour, even beyond the atomic imagery.
Interestingly the symbol on Lavinia's forehead at the end of the movie is the rune 'Othel' and runes are used a lot by wiccans and pagans alike as a magical alphabet. In its upright position Othel 'indicates one who is consumed by an ideal or vision' or someone 'inspired by the past' (quoted from The Runes by Lisa Pechel). Which is cool as she is literally giving Ward a vision, and experiencing one herself. It also represents possessions and things money can buy 'usually land or a building' which connects to the fact that it's the land being effected, and the house that is then taken. And also, could literally be a reference to her being 'possessed' by the colour. With regards to her use of the Necromicon as a non-fiction book of magical spells/symbols, I have come across one or two people in the pagan community who do believe in its lore, treating it as similar to the Key of Solomon. Sounds silly, but yeah, it happens.
Wrote this elsewhere but I'll add it here too, her carving 'solve' on her right hand is possibly a reference to Eliphas Levi's Baphomet which has 'solve' on its right arm and 'coagula' on it's left which are terms apparently used in alchemy for taking apart and conjoining which we obviously see in the film. I guess it hints not only at her desperation to try anything for aid but also the influence the colour has. Also regarding the Necronomicon, obviously for us the Simon Necronomicon is a real thing but in universe after so many years perhaps there are bastardised mass market reprints of bits of the 'real' Necronomicon. While people can't take it out of the libraries that hold copies those libraries do let people in to read them, perhaps someone with malicious intent or just enterprising might decide to print stuff they recall and pad it out with other assorted occult knowledge
The light in the attic definitely was deliberate, the kids mention at one point that they can't rember when the sun set/rises as if time is just switching when there not looking.

The Simon Necronomicon is an all Sumerian based book with serious padding of a dramatic Lovecraftian sort. (I slightly knew the typist through mutual friends. She poured salt over her typewriter as she worked.) Oddly there are no banishings, only calling spells in the book. Lavinia should have invested in a better grimoire.

Lavinia is such a weird name, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Especially since the rest of the family has normal modern sounding names. And being a Lovecraft fan, Lavinia sticks out even more because it's a singular name even in his mythology. What would have been interesting is if she had survived the movie but the color leaving had made her an albino. Or at least bleached her skin similar to how it bleaches the earth. And had driven her mad. Then she could become Lavinia Whately in the next movie. GImmicky, yes. But a way to tie the trilogy together by having one character lead to the next movie.
Since the Color messes with time and space, she could have indeed been transported into the Whateley household many years before to become "the twisted albino". And given how you mentioned her albinism could be seen as similar to the blasted earth, it wouldn't be out of place at all!
@@tuskinekinase That's my thinking. Either Lavinia mysteriously shows up in nearby Dunwich and draws the attention of old man Whateley, or he might even retrieve her from whatever dimension she landed in.
Regarding the symbols Louvenia carves on her hand and forehead, the one on her forehead resembles (very closely) the norse rune Othala. Some of the ones on her hand could also be variations of runes as well, specifically Ingwaz and possible Algiz
I believe the words she carves on her hands are in reference to the words you commonly see on Eliphas Levi's Baphomet, 'solve' and 'coagula' which are apparently related to alchemy. I don't think we see her carve 'coagula' but carving 'solve' on her right hand would be in line with the Baphomet image.
I'm really excited to see what Richard Stanley can do with The Dunwich Horror. Also it's one of the Lovecraft stories that's most suited to a film adaptation.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the quote on the wall of Benny's room "No Flesh Shall Be Spared" is likely a reference to a movie called Hardware that Stanley directed in 1990, and was also the title of a 2009 documentary, where Stanley is credited as himself. Excellent review for (my opinion, at least) one of the greatest Lovecraft adaptations ever put to screen.

You will see the real life inspiration for Tommy Chong's character. Stanley also chose "Color Out of Space," because it's his favorite. This endith the essay. Back to the forest I go.
This was always my favorite Lovecraft story because it was always a great way to show a truly alien lifeform and it was so amazing for its mutations and the mental degradation making it seem like it is something that even if you survive will change you forever. (which actually seems like its a perfect reason for the people going mad in modern day instead of the Lovecraft troupe of going nuts after only a few traumas or weird things.) I don't mind her being named Lavinia, more than one person can have that name.
This was the first story of HP's that I read. I saw the film for it's only showing one night in February in Cincinnati. I'd love to see a rendition of Shadow Over Innsmouth. Lovecraft was a genius. As is Nicholas Cage.
Hi hope your well. Love your reviews. Thought this was a great movie. This and underwater are great lovecraft adaptations. Can't wait to see more of your reviews. Keep safe and well Mr Deusdaecon. Cheers
Watching this again almost a year later. Getting excited for the next Lovecraft Month. Your reviews are so incredibly dense and rich they're pretty much companion pieces. Cannot wait to see what films you do this month. Thank you.
One of the scenes that I thought was a great moment/writing, is when they are in the attic and the kids leave (Cage about to shoot his wife/son), and the oldest son says to his father (with great intonation) “I love you, dad.” Was just a great touch.
Color Out Of Space is my favorite of the Lovecraft short stories. And the scariest to me. When reading it the first time I leapt out of my skin when startled by my phone ringing. This rendition of a Lovecraft story is the best. Everyone involved really seemed to understand that it’s what you don’t see that makes these stories so horrific. I can’t wait for the next two. And to that. This video is the best dives into the film and short story I’ve seen thus far. Well done.
I did get that Nathan was becoming like his father as the color effected him but still felt like the performance went from 0 to Vampire's Kiss to quickly. It felt like an editing issue. Like there was a scripted scene or two that was cut.
I'll be honest when I heard the daughter's name was Lavinia and her hobbies, I thought it was implying she was going to be THAT Lavinia when they get to The Dunwich Horror.
I do not comment often. However, I wanted to let you know I love Lovecraft month and your breakdowns are amazing. Your insight makes me enjoy these movies even more.
Thanks for doing this series ! Im a sucker for anything lovecraft related and was able to discover some new amazing additions to the mythos i wouldn't have found otherwise if not checking your playlist for "HP lovecraft month"
Holy shit, that finger cutting scene! I don’t know why but in this movie that scene REALLY got to me. Probably an indication of how damn good the build up in this movie is.
In the summer of about 1993 I and some friends were walking around center city Philadelphia. I saw on a shrub, and picked up, a praying mantis, hot pink in color. It rode on my shoulder for over an hour as we walked along. I say hot pink, but it was much like the color filters this movie presents. Going back to my childhood crayon sets, magenta was darker. Is also one of those staining, fugitive pigments.
This month was really awesome in terms of your content. Really enjoyed learning about these movies I don't normally check out. This video was awesome even with the tricks to get around copyright issues. Very well done and I hope you have an awesome halloween man :D
She may be Wiccan but that spell she's doing at the start is ceremonial magick of the Golden Dawn tradition which had roots in Rosecrucianism and Freemasonry. It is the Western Hermetic tradition.
I watched this after seeing the film and it was a great source to understand the film and all the Lovecraft references. It actually led me to read The Willows, Call of Cthulhu, Dunwich Horror, and Shadow Over Innsmouth. In short, it got me into Lovecraft horror in a deeper way. This guy hasn’t posted in a while but he definitely has a effect.
27:00 the dog does seem like a husky, however, it might be more in line with a wolfdog than a husky due to its size and color. I currently have a Siberian husky, which is smaller than an Alaskan husky in size. Some of the sources online indicate that Alaskan is stronger and faster than Siberian husky. However, the Siberian husky is more family-oriented and less competition orientation than the Alaskan Variation of the breed. Granted that the breed I have been talking about is Alaskan Husky, witch the breeding between the Alaskan Malamute and the Siberian Husky. However, "the dog" in The Thing does strike me as an Alaskan husky, and in "The Color Out Of Space" the dog is a little too large to be either Alaskan or Siberian husky. Granted, I would say that the dog used in this movie was a wolfdog(not sure about sub-specie). granted I do love the dog in the movie :D
was just speculation cause like I said I don’t know about dogs, you have to admit the dogs in both films at least look fairly similar so not just wild speculation on my part.
@@deusdeaconReviews @Deusdaecon Reviews true, dog in both in" The Thing" and "The Color Out Of Sace" look similar. There is an apparent difference between those two dog breeds, at least in color. The difference in species is difficult for me to tell. However, "The Thing" and "The Color out of Space” movie does seem to utilize two different dog species; however in a similar family to each other. At least it does so seem to me that it does seem similar to a Husky, however, it might be a wolfdog. Granted, I might be wrong about the whole thing.
This movie was great! For the sound of well the best explanation (or the one i liked more) is that his brother fell into the well and got mutated. Since the thing distort space and time he came back from the future to comunicate to his family.
Wow what a great adaptation. Nick Cage was perfect for the role, everyone can act, they stuck to the original story but added in some new stuff and the effects were pretty good
30:55 - 31:35 😱😱😱Wow, another creepy critter integrated into the mythos. Good eye there, Deus. Wonder when we'll see another "Horrifying Act of Nature" bit in H.P. Lovecraft Month. You should do a small educational show about these sorts of creatures, and how they could be used in horror stories😁😁😁
Just watched the movie and to be honest considering that we don't have a lot of lovecraftian movies out there i was suprised in a good way with this one. If you like Lovecraft this one is a must watch
Ok so I need to confess. This is one of my fav of Lovecrafts stories even though it is pretty simple. After I saw the trailer I lost all interest in it and thought it was B grade crap that once again studios had interfered with and that was the end of it. But after seeing some positivity around it I decided to give it a go and it was excellent. Some changes I didn't approve of and some I did but what a great film that truly understands the feel. I guess I need to learn to give things a chance because sometimes I will be very pleased.
"... the imagery also reminded me of..." The Whisperer in Darkness, oh yeah, I noticed that right away complete with a voice on a recording expositing away "... the Music of Erich Zann" Huh?
“a voice through a speaker “ thats your connection there, Everything else about whisperer i cant see the connection, where as Erich zann has the protagonist stumble upon Erich zann now a desiccated corpse (just like the film) and hears the sounds of the mans activities, in the story his violin in the film Ezras voice, granted its all opinion, but don’t tell me theres no resemblance.
@@deusdeaconReviews In Whisperer in Darkness, Akeley was taken by the Migo... possibly, I wouldn't trust them myself... and in his place in the finale was one of the aliens using his face and arms as a disguise. That reminds me more of what was happening in Color out of Space... the man is completely gone, taken over by the alien while his parts remain and the person he was only saved to tape, garbled and unearthly. Maybe it can double as both but everything about his situation from setting to isolation to alien visitors screams Whisperer to me.
I think the idea with the calls was that we're seeing it not from the perspective of the individual characters, but like how someone else looking at them in that moment would see it.
i knew you had critiqued this movie, as clips showed up from it in your "H. P. Lovecraft Month" intro. I finally found it and was glad, as I knew you'd do a good no BS job on it. And, as far as Nathan being made to look foolish by his daughter, I think that's more of a modern teenager trope i.e. gives more insight about how she feels about he father trying to "get back to his roots" It is her grandparent's farm, after all. PS Obviously, I REALLY liked this movie!
The symbol on levinias (probably mispelled that) head looks like the hunter Mark from bloodborne which had a dlc similar to the shadow over innsmouth with a fishing hamlet having people becoming fish-like. The symbol also kinda looks like a body hanging by its feet with its hands bound.
2:00 Never thought I'd hear Lovecraft being the source for such a strong emotional connection. ^^ 13:50 I have to agree with him on that. Humanoid aliens are a pet peeve of mine too.
I think we've all had that exact copy of that book at least once in our lives... Just sayin'. I had the same one I bought at a Hastings when I was a weeee lad. Also, that praying mantis edit in my face scared the shit out of me with my cig and morning coffee lol. Great review as always man.
I thought the Color Out of Space was pretty tame. But then it got weird. And then it got weirder. Somehow it got weirder still. All in all, it was awesome. Still needs the "U" to be a proper adaptation though.
I seem to recall The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath implying that the Elder sign is a hand gesture. I like to think of the it like the term Old One, a handy, vague catch all word that Lovecraft and his circle can drop in any strange gestures or insignias they wanted to include in a story.

Oh really ❤️
DAGON used a lot of elements from "Shadow." Not a completely faithful version, but it's worth a watch.
Been a Lovecraft fan since the 1980's. Love this movie. Great review. Spot on. Luckily I got to see it on the big screen. Watching this made my day.
Glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic as always, excited for the next video.
“He also has a cat named-“
Oh no
“G spot”
Whew
This movie has shot up to a solid 3 or 4 on my top 10 favorites of all time by about the half way point lol, good to see you taking a deep look at it
Hi hope your well.
Thank you.
It might a bit premature to assume ill be doing Lovecraft month this year.
@@deusdeaconReviews sorry about the assumption. I'll still enjoy any videos you do.
Well done.
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
not gonna lie, the news of The Dunwich Horror coming got me excited!
Your insight makes me enjoy these movies even more.
thank so much for commenting then and the kind words of course
I friggin love these reviews
I loved this flick. An Mandy is in my top three films of all time. Yup I said it of all time.
Much love from Vancouver. Thanks for great content.
Thanks for doing this series ! Im a sucker for anything lovecraft related and was able to discover some new amazing additions to the mythos i wouldn't have found otherwise if not checking your playlist for "HP lovecraft month"
15:54 - 16:08 Maybe Cage asked Stanley to throw in the reference as a bit of closure for Superman Lives not being made. 🤣🤣🤣Just kidding.
Holy shit, that finger cutting scene! I don’t know why but in this movie that scene REALLY got to me. Probably an indication of how damn good the build up in this movie is.
Can’t wait to see what’s to come. I enjoy watching your twitch when I can
So glad to see so much new content lately. Always so thought provoking.
Excellent analysis, cheers mate
Glad you enjoyed it
Oh my Joley is looking more and more like her mother as she gets older.
Well she also uses a paperback necronomicon i dont think anyone is surprised her “magic” is all over the place.
Absolutely, I was just pumped I recognized what she was saying. It was a "I know the answer teacher!" moment haha.
Great synopsis. You really hit all of the marks with this one.
I... didn't we just get a new Deusdaecon review? My mind is mellllting
ive uploaded a video ever week this month so you may have missed the first two, feel free to check em out if you did
@@deusdeaconReviews even if I saw 'em its worth rewatching.
Your lama comments show u really put in work in these reviews. Another insightful review. Great stuff.
Damn Deacon, I love how you always teach me about tons of neat little details I missed about movies I already love. Lovecraft Month is always a treat
This movie was great! For the sound of well the best explanation (or the one i liked more) is that his brother fell into the well and got mutated. Since the thing distort space and time he came back from the future to comunicate to his family.
I love your channel! I always look forward to Lovecraft Month. You're one of my very favorite youtubers!
Oh really ❤️
If you haven’t yet, you should give Annihilation (2018) a look. I saw it just after watching Colour Out of Space.
Deusdeacon, so happy to see you back to reviewing regularly. Love your videos.
10:41 The "No flesh shall be spared" quote was also used in Stanley's 'Hardware' film.
Just watched the movie and to be honest considering that we don't have a lot of lovecraftian movies out there i was suprised in a good way with this one. If you like Lovecraft this one is a must watch
I picked up that copy of the Necronomicon when I was in high school, it's ah, kinda...yeah ;-)
Also, is that a byakhee hanging from his roof? I also like to think the mantis is going to grow up to be a version of a mi-go.
Every new video you put out is great, really looking forward to every new release from you!
It’s really sweet how the director had that connection to Lovecraft stories because of his mother.
"... the imagery also reminded me of..."
The Whisperer in Darkness, oh yeah, I noticed that right away complete with a voice on a recording expositing away
"... the Music of Erich Zann"
Huh?
I supposed this all boils down to personal prefference as I’ve narrated Erich zann I’d naturally lean more towards that story
Sharp consideration and analysis. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I enjoyed this movie and was pleasantly surprised by the understanding of the source material.
I didn’t know this film was part of a planned trilogy until I saw this. Can’t wait for Dunwich.
Well, there's never going to be an authentic picture of an old Robert E. Howard.
2:00 Never thought I'd hear Lovecraft being the source for such a strong emotional connection. ^^
13:50 I have to agree with him on that. Humanoid aliens are a pet peeve of mine too.
I love how the title sounds like “The Colorado Space”
Yeah mate that sounds a lot scarier
Color out of Space was beautiful. I absolutely loved it!
Every time you put out a new vid i compulsively watch your Castle Rock remake series. Your 13 ghosts review is fire.
Been waiting for this review, i have to say i actually loooved this movie and it just helped me love HP lovecraft even more.
I need the OG intro it always got me hype.... and a throwback “Air Conditionioning” lmao😂
I think we've all had that exact copy of that book at least once in our lives... Just sayin'. I had the same one I bought at a Hastings when I was a weeee lad. Also, that praying mantis edit in my face scared the shit out of me with my cig and morning coffee lol. Great review as always man.
Yeah pretty much. I bought that book from...I think it was a Borders in the local mall. Printed with hellish INK, and bound in unholy...tagboard.
@@BuildEnvironmentTV lol same here... Same here. Something tempted me to go down that aisle. It was scary.
Good to see you back!
been back all month you might want to check out the previous weeks reviews, just in case you missed them
@@deusdeaconReviews I have missed them! Bloody TH-cam. Keep up the great work though!
I thought the Color Out of Space was pretty tame. But then it got weird.
And then it got weirder. Somehow it got weirder still. All in all, it was awesome.
Still needs the "U" to be a proper adaptation though.
Kind of a weird thought I had but I wonder if some of these entities that we can't comprehend also can't really comprehend us.
Hey man, just found your channel. I really appreciate your thoughtful analysis. Thank you for sharing your views and research!
Thanks and welcome
I seem to recall The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath implying that the Elder sign is a hand gesture. I like to think of the it like the term Old One, a handy, vague catch all word that Lovecraft and his circle can drop in any strange gestures or insignias they wanted to include in a story.
