    KTM’s have always had a sophisticated oil filtration system. I think my old 525 had like 3 screens and 2 filters along with a magnetic drain bolt. It took time to change but at least you have the option to service more components. Unlike my Honda which only has 1 filter and a drain bolt. Those ratchet wrenches are awesome! We got a metric and imperial set last year and they work great.

      Hello Fynn, I am fortunate to not ha e two filters. Sevrsla friends with KTMs have the dual filter setup.
      I should go ahead an get a full set of metrics. I picked up an 8 & 10 a while ago as most of the fasteners on my bikes use those. But it would not hurt to have all of them available. Thanks for stopping by! - Frank

    KTMs scare me. You are helping me learn I don’t want one! Everything seems more complicated than necessary. Why two screens and a filter? That looked like a lot longer gasket than a failed o-ring/base gasket. I agree completely that changing your own oil/filter/screens is the way to go. Nice video. I’m sure the big 4 appreciate it! 🤣

      Hello V Track, I thought it was too long as well. But damn what else could it be!
      To be fair, those screen catch a noticeable amount of metal, so they are needed. It's crazy that the engine is still shaving off metal at 14K miles. But that's the KTM life. - Frank

      @@OneOldManRiding It depends per "area". The Netherlands is small, mostly flat and a few "off-road" TET-routes. But in the surrounding countries there are more challenging routes and beautiful sceneries like Belgium (The Ardennes), Germany (Schwarzwald, Moezel-area, Bayern-area (in the deep south), Austria (Gross Glockner pass)/Switzerland/Italy (Stelvio pass) are great where the mountain passes are.... These are reachable in a couple of days riding (400 - 1200 km distance).

      Hello Roy, 400-1200km sounds reasonable, provided you can take the time of course. My son was in Austria and Germany earlier this year on vacation and said it was beautiful. - Frank

      Hello DMc, do not be surprised if you have what looks like quite a bit of metal shavings on your first oil change. It's very common for this engine to shed metal for the first and second oil change, and not an indication of an issue! - Frank

    Wow that is a lot of places to have to drain and access.
    Only other engines I know with so many drain locations is a Lamboghini V10 and V12 which has about 8 due to the shallow oil pan with humps in it.

  • @jons78733

    Thanks for the video. One major thing I would change up is I would pull both screen filters and the paper filter and completely drain the engine before installing ANY of the filters. Especially the side screen filter. There is enough dirty oil left behind that is could get into the new screen filter and that, to me, sort of defeats the purpose of installing fresh filters.

      @@OneOldManRiding - For future reference, the cap on the end of the filter between the exhaust accepts a hex key. I believe it takes a 5mm or perhaps a 6mm. It's a lot easier putting a hex key in the small space by the header than trying to fish a spanner in that tight space. You also will not have to loosen your header stud bolts to get to the filter.

    By the way... you didn't tell us about your topcase(s), right? Not in the description of the (earlier) videos either...
    Once I saw a SW-Motech Trax Adventure ? And in this video a Givi Outback? If so what kind of model/type, how much capacity (in litres) and do you like them?
    Sorry for all these questions, but I'm thinking of the Givi Alaska sidecases (36L) and the 56L topcase.

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Roy, I am running a generic aluminum top case from Amazon. Its 45L. Which I think is a little large for the bike. It fits my helmet with vertical room to spare, so I imagine a 40L would have been sufficient. - Frank

    • @DutchCountryBoy
      @DutchCountryBoy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OneOldManRiding Agree, it's a huge box.
      Nevertheless, I went for the GIVI Trekker Alaska set (in black). The topcase is a whooping 56L (yes it is almost a shipping container...). I need to store 2 cross helmets and some other stuff while travelling. During commuting, I will detach the topcase.

      @@OneOldManRiding The oil changes are so complex. Dual screens and o rings and no crush washers? Uh oh. My litre sportbikes are just a sump plug and new crush washer and an external spin on oil filter torqued on with filter cap adapter. Takes me no time at all. The fact that KTM require dual screens indicates they believe their may be engine debris that they don't want to circulate. I'm not convinced. And I can only imagine the consequences of missed or late oil changes and new screens. Can you say low oil pressure? These are Made in India and it shows. Wiring looms and connectors are cheap as are the switchgear and they place the header pipe right next to the rear monoshock? Going to be quite a few rear shocks that get their oil nice and hot with blown seals as a result.
