    FYI… N-m is short for Newton-meters (torque).

    114, 331, 625 miles.
    This is my oil changes I did. The 625 was the dealer. My point, early and often gets the metal out fast. Lots of metal on #1, #2 had some but #3 was just oil,, dealer mech was impressed.

      The screens are never clogged at 600 ,just showing debris. Waste of oil at 114 and 331.The debris is not going anywhere, that's what the screens are for.

    Hi Bruce, good to see you having a go with spanner’s, and obviously loving KTM life. We’re of a similar age, and crawling around on the floor with old and damaged knees, as we have, should be a thing of the past if you intend to do most of your own servicing. A great Christmas present to yourself would be a hydraulic motorcycle lift, not cheap, Walmart’s one is around $700, but allows you to sit down for tasks like oil changes, brake pad, chain and sprocket changes etc. I’ve had mine over 25 years now and it certainly makes jobs much less of a chore when you’re comfortable.
    A couple of tips that may help next time, would be to remove the bash plate first, before you warm the bike up, so that you can get straight to draining the oil when you turn it off. Secondly if you had a shallower oil catch tray, it would give yourself more room to turn your spanner/wrench. Just a couple of ideas that may make the job easier, and I’m all for that. Love your videos and look forward to how your post oil change trip went. Ride safe.

    I like your 100 million yr. B.C. poster . Good tips on oil change . I have a SDR KTM too. Enjoy and be safe with your KTM. I Demoed a 1290 Super Adventure at Barber couple of wks. back. Very pleased with the handling.

    "Black Dog Skid Plate". Expen$ive but really heavy duty, you can lift the bike on it.
    Comes off much, much, easier than the stock one. If you take out the 'backbone' of the original skid plate... you will see how cheap the stock screws are... and how bad the threading in the cases is.
    I just use good old WD-40 to wash out the oil screens. They will be good for a lot of uses before you need to replace them, (unless you mess up on re-inserting them). Got an early bike, original oil change I had a lot of garbage on the screens... torn gaskets and other debris. Shortly after, KTM made the factory clean up the cases... not much debris now.
    Bottom oil screen... use 1/4" socket wrench, and you need a thin socket with a wiggle or universal end on the extension. If you get in there with a conventional 3/8" socket you will be making side contact with the case or exhaust and possibly mess up the bolt or the thread, or on re-assembly mis-torque it.
    Again, the threading on that bottom hole is a bit suspect. After a few oil changes, I looked at the bolt and had a bit of aluminum 'tearing' on the edges of the thread. (Cleaned it up.) Got to really be careful in there.
    Usually buy oil by the 4 liter size.... 'Motorex Power Synthetic 4T Motor Oil 10W-50 4 Liter'. Getting way too expensive though, now it's up to $68 ! Individual 1l bottles = $100 !!!!
    Couple styles of oil filters. One style has a ring you can grip with a snap ring pliers... others don't. Couple thin blade screwdrivers (with a curve in the end)... or... just use a threaded screw (as you found out) !

    I’ve been thinking of buying a 390, that’s how I found your channel. I had a street cruiser(20yrs ago) and have been thinking of getting a bike again.
    I want to stick mostly to the backroads, the KTM seems like a good choice.

    You certainly had a lot of Senior moments n this video. Did you read the instructions? Owners manual?. If you have an oil screen. You do Not spray cleaner on to the outside of the screen.You just forced the particles deeper into the screen. Spray air from inside out. If the screen is plastic. Brake c kean will probably melt it. Also USE A MAGNET TO REMOVE THE OIL FILTER. so you don't damage threads or casings!! I still en j on ur videos.

    But torque is measured in newtonmeters (Nm), not nanometers (nm)! 😉

    Nice to see what maintenance is like on a KTM. Also good to see close-ups of such a beautiful machine! Did you follow a service manual or users manual or some other source of info?

    You should always ride the bike and shift through the gears before any oil change

      It all gets blended together anyways a few miles after a change. It’s more important doing the change itself.

      Pretty much how I do it. Some aluminum foil over the exhaust will help cleanup. And the 390 oil level check procedure is weird. Engine needs to be up to operating temperature, engine off, and check after 1 minute. Look too early and it shows over full, check after its been sitting awhile and it shows too low. Hope you enjoy the 390. 10k trouble free miles on mine.

    How are you liking your 390? Is the gas gauge accurate? It doesn't register on my 890 ADV R until it's below half a tank.

    Would the oil filter come out with a magnet?

      I think the metal is aluminum, so no a magnet would not work.

      @@MySeniorMoments Yup. I could see that. Maybe so sticky duct tape, but your solution was fine. It would suck if they gave you the wrong filter at the shop though.

      It said that you can do it with a screwdriver and a magnet. My magnet wasn’t a strong enough. So used couple of hooks.

    Beware adding oil to a 390. When I was shopping I checked the oil at the dealer on a bike in the showroom. Raised it to center and no oil showed in sight glass and I thought it was low . After buying one I realized you have to move bike left to right and then check it .Something about the engine design gives a false reading sometimes. I would be very careful going over the 1.7 liter amount.

    I own a KTM 1290 SDR and a Honda CB500X. I’m glad you’re happy with the KTM but I sure wish you’d gone with the Honda. (We’re both of the same vintage). Keep safe and happy trails.

    How much oil was drained, is there any drop in oil levels?

      Although the owner manual says it takes 1.7 quarts of oil, I ended up using the full 2 quarts after I topped up the oil about 100 miles after the oil change.

    What a stupid piece of engineering by KTM! What, three separate, non-standard filter elements to clean/change the oil, and with O-rings too? That is among the poorest piece of engineering design I've ever seen! And all for a 390 cc single cylinder engine, wtf? Now I am certain I will NEVER buy a KTM motorcycle. Bunch of Rube Goldberg nonsense. That main oil filter is a joke/nightmare. You have to punch a hole in it to extract it? C'mon! I can change the oil on my Yamaha in a fraction of the time, no muss, no fuss. And all that complexity for a thumper! Dumbass engineering at its finest. I had considered a 390 at one point from the same dealership this one was purchased in Medford, OR but I will steer clear of that place. Hope all you KTM owners are loving your machines, they remind me of 1970s FIATs! Arrrggghhh.
