One Old Man Riding
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 เม.ย. 2021
One fifty plus rider who took thirty years off of motorcycle riding. I have been regularly buying, selling, and riding both on and off-road recently. While dual sport riding is my preference, I am spending more time on the road than I originally planned.
NEBDR: The Infamous ELEVATOR!
KTM 390 Adventure | After having a great time on Section One of the Northeast Backcountry Discovery Route, I decided to give section Two a shot. In this video we go uo to, and down the "Elevator," which is spoken of as a rocky hill that can be something other than "FUN" on an adventure bike. - Frank

I wish I could see the terrain better; the video quality is pretty washed and lighted out.
My apologies, I did what I could. The source footage is practically 100% white. I could not save anything once I was not in deep tree cover. Thank you for stopping by an commenting! - Frank
looks like fun
Hello John, it was a fun spot. I would not want to ride some of it afyer a heavy rain though... - Frank
Looks like a challenging road. A testament to your high-level riding skills. Thanks for the video.
Hello Rob! It was a lot fo fun. I was waiting for the Rabaconda to arrive, so I missed out in some fun by not having tread. I would not want to ride some spots in the Raj though! - Frank
Some hard-core hikers you passed!!!!!😳
Great ride. Love riding rocks! Happy Thanksgiving my friend!
Good riding Frank, looked like a cool trail. I was surprised to see that cabin alongside the trail. If it was wet or raining those rocks and mud would be treacherous. Have a great Thanksgiving Frank, take care.
Next try the escalator 😂
I'm as frugal as the next guy, but I never start a big trip with old tires. And yes, that sometimes means spooning off tires with a fair amount of life left in them, but like you, I ride solo and want everything I can control to be on my side. Also, being even older than you, I'm done with a twin cylinder ADV bike for this stuff unless I'm riding with others. I'm making a few mods to my KTM 500EXC to make it a bit more ADV focused and riding it. Just yesterday I was helping a buddy pick up his 300 Honda on a steep rocky single track and it was plenty for a couple old guys who are in decent shape to handle. If it was my Africa Twin, or even a 790 KTM, we would have got it done, but it would have sucked. Timely video as I'm planning on riding the BDRX next season. Keep up the great work and thanks for your efforts!
It seems like it's gonna be quite heavy...but it will sell. Getting it cruise control is amazing.
Ktm hit the nail on the head with this bike, if it's reliable I got to have one! I don't know why ,say for example, suzuki, didn't listen to there customers with the new drz. All they had to do was watch you tube to see what people had done to their drz's ,to know what direction to go!
Great Review, these budget friendly units are not to be ignored, I started with a pair of V6 for me and the missus and it was great. Now if we had open source Mesh like we have Bluetooth all our prayers would be answered. The only problem of course is getting Enough riders to buy into a mesh network. We have 9 riders in our group, 4 riders on comms (plus three pillions) and it just covers us front to back. The rest is just resistance to change. I put a com unit on a mate who didn't have/want one, he talked so much I had to turn him down 🤣
I was trying to watch but your audio is out of sync :(
I am looking at mid size (T7, Transalp, Vstrom 800DE) bikes. I want something more highway capable than my DRZ400S. The 450-500 cc bikes have piqued my interest. This KTM looks awesome. i hope the exhaust is just a concept version. It's a little too low for creek crossings. I'm also a little leary of KTM. I know a guy who has a 390 Adventure and it has gremlins. I guess I'll ride one to see if it's what I'm looking for.
Nice video! Was wondering if you found it necessary to balance the tire after installation on the rim? Thanks
The underslung exhaust is a miss. a Huge miss. But everything else is a real upgrade.
You are right, the most trouble-free engine blocks produced by KTM are the 390 and 690.
And the recent 500 motors. Best modern reliable lightweight motor of the last 20 years or more
They could make it with a little more power closer to 50 like 50 or 51+ yes there might be a reliability problem, but I don’t think so over in Europe. Their license requirements requires them to only have certain amount of power for a size a bike that is the only limiting factor. I would enjoy a bike with a little more power, and it has the torque curve to follow suit. I have a KTM 390. I enjoy it that said I’m looking forward to seeing the 450 GS twin to see what it’s like.
The new 390 will save the KTM brand financially. It will appeal to more markets around the world. Hopefully it won't be in limited production like all the other KTM models.
Im also driving a 390 Adv MY 2023 with an Recluse Clutch ☝, everything you say is oK, but im also missing the Funktion: Indikator reset. Thats probably a worst Thing.
Morning Frank, I saw the bike in the flesh yesterday at the UK motorcycle live show, it looks like it will be a very good bike, it is tall, which accounts for the extra ground clearance, it looks like the front screen is going to help on those highway stints as will the Cruise control, I do think the cruise control buttons look a bit exposed so really good hand guards will be essential. I love my 450Mt (Ibex 450) and I am pretty sure that it has the engine KTM planned for the 490 Adventure, it is a great engine and on the face of it looks reliable. There was no weight listed for the bike and I think that will be key, I also think they missed trick not fitting tubeless wheels, but overall it will give the 450MT a run for its money.
Do you believe this bike is gud for touring? say 500 Kms a day?
I think you are right with those 5 things. The only thing I would be skeptical about, would be engine reliability/longevity (I don't really have a reason to be), so it was good to hear your thoughts on that.
There will a non-R version with 19-17 wheels too, hopefully with alloys instead of spokes.
My 2023 390 Adv is perfect for me, after replacing the front sprocket. Primarily back road riding with trails when I find them (but no rocky, muddy mountains). So I'm not interested in the new one. This seems nitpicky, but side handles are very useful, for hauling it around, attaching bags, and for an occasional passenger. The aftermarket will likely provide for this, just like cruise control for those who care. I've modded mine to my taste, and there should be options for the new one. Good discussion!
Good luck with production freezes and lack of cash flow. I feel less than confident in the brand .
Good review of the high points!
Hope they stay in business to deliver this bike and support it
Ok, but when is it arriving in the USA? So many theoretical bikes we can’t buy but are always talked about. Ibex 450, KTM 390, BMW 450 …..
I am on the waiting list. I have a 2023 390 adventure now, and a 350exc, but this may have to happen.
This looks very good but for the dirt road riding I mostly have available to me my 2020 KTM 390 A suits my needs fine. Of course I also have a Honda crf300l for when I'm riding rougher terrain. It's the KTM 390 Enduro R that's really caught my eye. I owned a KTM 690 Enduro R and found it had more power than I needed so I sold it and bought the Honda 300. I find the Crf300 to be a bit lacking in power but I think the KTM 390 Enduro would truly be my unicorn. I'm just patiently waiting at this point.
Good look at this new bike. Thanks!
Hi Frank I actually had a deposit down on this bike until I found out that they're holding up a year and I just picked it back up from the dealer the other day. Yes, I feel like you, missed opportunity for KTM..
Nice video Frank, good summary of the new bike's apparent strengths, although I'm holding my breath to find out the weight and price of admission. I'm planning on adding the Veridian cruise to my '22 390 over the winter, and then my year and a half farkling process will be complete - so while I agree wholeheartedly that the new 390 R is what we've all been salivating for, I won't be the first at the dealership when they arrive. After spending mucho time and money making my '22 390 more offroad capable, would I then want or need to make the new model more pavement capable? I don't have as many miles on my 390 as you have on yours, but the miles I do have on it have been pretty challenging - your remark about taking it up rocky hills, rpm and clutch control is right on - but I was simply amazed at how well it did in various rugged riding situations. Your experience on the BDR's backs up my own here in New Mexico, and I love hearing you say that the 'reliability factor' is not a factor (although I will say having owned a 990 Adventure for 10 years with practically no issues whatsoever, I think that complaint is somewhat overblown.) I do also hope that Bajaj upgraded the fasteners quality - that's really been my only complaint with my '22 390.
I love cruise control! Wish I had it in my VStrom!
Hello Patrick, it was the only feature my VStrom 1000 was missing. Such a wonderful bike to cross the country in, but OOF I missed CC! - Frank
Guess we have to wait until they show up and we find out what was really delivered. I have spoken to a lot of people who want this bike. Hope KTM delivers what they are promising.
Hello John, I have faith in Bajaj. The 125, 250, & 390, all using the LC4c engine are very popular sellers for them. I expect they are heavily invested in bringing this bike to thr world market. Heck by the time this bike ships, Bajaj could have switched from the minority owner, to the majority of KTM! - Frank
@OneOldManRiding I have more faith in Bajaj than I do in the big names. I am kinda leaning towards Royal Enfield right now. I really like the Bear 650 and Classic 650 that is coming out.
My next bike 1000% for real...!!
Hello Macron, it looks like mine as well! I looked long and hard at the CFMoto, I mean I have a deposit on one! But if I bought one, I would sell it when the 390 R is released in North America! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
I have a 2019 RE Himmy.I tried everything to make the idle to smoothen and have an annoying cutting out at 3000k. This might be the fix.
Was there end of September and 1st of October was awesome. Definitely going back.
Hello Clark, excellent. I have been going annually, for four years now. Still looking forward to going again! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
I love South Dakota a week or 3 before "Sturgis" ... just amazing!
Hello Kyle, you should make a trip up on the 1190 and ride the BDRX with us next September. Almost perfect weather! And all the tourists are GONE. - Frank
Looks like an amazing day on the trail!!!
Other than the grease in the AM, it was perfect. Once we left the area that was drenched by the rainstorm that followed Matt into South Dakota, it was sunny, dry, and FUN! - Frank
Will this be available in USA
I can honestly recommend SD in September now as well!!
Hello Patrick? Recomend it before we all showed up and crashed your vacation, or after? 😜 - Frank
@ ha!! I’m going with both!! If the next time I go, I don’t get any solo time, I will still have an absolute blast. If I go, and no one else does, you guessed it, it’ll still be a ton of fun!!
@@Motoramblings Spoken like a politician, I'd be proud to be your wingman. I do like my ice cream and pie stops.
PATRICK!! ... The weather was fantastic. October in Colorado was stunning, more global warming please ...
@ 😂😂 I was very happy to have such amazing weather while there! Not too thrilled about all the heat we had mid summer though!
The Black Hills are beautiful for sure. You are well traveled and your endorsement of riding there has meaning. Thanks!
ROB!!! Haha funny I had to stop and think if I had a Suzuki, duh! I'm on some good drugs.
Hello Dave, your stable changes so often! Do yoy keep a spreadsheet to stay on top of it? - Frank
Hello Rob, few places are as beautiful, though with the canyons you ride, it would be less impressive to you, than most! - Frank
@@OneOldManRiding Whatever do you mean Frank? 🤣I switch bikes and start over because I don't keep good records. I think I found the perfect combo.👍
I watched another person who was in the same situation. The traffic jam was not the highlight of the adventure but the beauty was overwhelming. That really was fun to watch, thanks for sharing!
Hello Motocreek, the area is packed with tourists, and traffic mist of their riding season. I would not want to be stuck in it! Tim was planning well when he picked mid September! Thank you for stopping by and commenting! - Frank
Brrrrrr.
Hello Jason, we were very fortunate that this was the only cold morning. And having been riding in the rain two days before... I will take cold over rain! - Frank
I wish Suzuki/Honda would build a 350 dirt/street with a 6 speed really missing lot of metric bikes in this area. Also, Honda needs to have the white/blue/red colors on ADV bikes like in Europe.
