  • The Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 might just be the best value sports car on the market today thanks to one very special ingredient, the engine.
The special engine is worth talking about because what follows the 718 is going to be an EV version of the Cayman and Boxster, so let's enjoy making a Cayman howl while we still can.
The 4.0-litre flat-six engine is a variant as found in the globally celebrated Cayman GT4.
In this video, John Marcar walks and talks through the 718 GTS and works through the true cost of buying one of the last-ever petrol-powered Cayman models.

Electric should be super affordable... battery and 4 electric engines AWD. I do not see why it should be expensive. For me electric with 100km real range would be fine, but 40k euro price, no more...

Thanks for making waiting time for my 718 BGTS just a small bit easier - the production process ended yesterday, so hopefully I’ll get hold of it really soon.
The 718 is a real delight - just as you said, it’s fun and exciting at basically any speed. I remember when I first drove the 911 on Porsche Experience event while having the 718 already ordered - I was afraid that experiencing the legend will make me feel that I chose the wrong car and make dive deeper into my pocket to change the order and get the 911 instead, but actually it was totally opposite and 911 turned out to be probably the biggest disappointment in my entire life of a car guy. Don’t get me wrong - it’s incredibly capable, if anyone would ask me which one handles better, I would point at 911 every time. But this is actually this car’s biggest problem - it’s just too good, everything is too easy, you feel like the car is doing everything for you, it simply lacks fun and excitement. To have fun in 911 you need to drive the go-to-jail-speeds, fortunately it’s not the case for 718. That event showed me that 718 GTS 4.0 is the exact answer to what I was looking for and 911 simply isn’t.

That's exactly what I thought.. I almost bought a CPO 992.1 4CS... I drive it thinking I'm taking it home that day and was disappointed. I have a C8 z51 Vette and thought the Vette was better. I got a caymen GTS that just froze the build last week. Should be in my hands and of May. With the money saved I can keep both cars. The 718s are just so much more fun to drive on the streets. The 911 is too Cadillac now for me.

Great content and lovely to hear you describe the delicacy of the driving experience. I find this almost completely forgotten as most seem to obsess about 1/4 mile and 0-60.
Regarding the turn in when i first experienced it i actually thought but was oversteer and i’d lost the back wheels. It’s that much better than almost anything else, 911 included. Get behind the wheel of most other cars and the turn in feels recalcitrant. Keep the content coming 👍

Worth noting that the GTS interior package gives you the extended leather to the door cards and dash. It's decent value in terms of the impact is makes to the cabin. If feels pretty low rent with the plastic dash and door cards.

Great video 🤓!!! Last year in February 2023, I acquired my new 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 which has the 4L NA flat six cylinder engine (same unit as a GT4) and a PDK gearbox. Power output (394 bhp) and torque (317 lb-ft) are a nice match to this car's sensible curb weight (~3200 lbs). The color is Gentian Blue metallic with a black/chalk all-leather interior and silver wheel rims. It's definitely an entertaining driver's car!
So far, I've only done 452 miles but hopefully a lot more this coming Summer! The PDK is also a lot of fun (it's definitely quick) 🤓
All the best and thanks again from Colorado!

Good vid, the GT4 commentary was a bit out of date though, those were never limited models like the GT3/GT4 RS are - though you're right you still can't buy one, but that's because orders closed about 12 months ago and they're discontinued. Unless you meant the GT4 RS, which is a different car completely and nowhere near just £10k more...

Nice video! After a 6 month wait, my 2024 CGTS arrived in December and is now broken in. Agreed, it’s an amazing car! After owning over 20 BMWs, this is my first Porsche. I wanted to buy a new manual car before they’re all gone, and planned to order an M2. But I feel very fortunate that I got a GTS 4.0 allocation. I chose a “Ferrari spec” in Carmine Red over Espresso/Cognac leather, since all GT4s and nearly all GTS’s come with black interiors.
In the US market, you CAN get the GT sport steering wheel with heating and multifunction controls. Just checked my build sheet to confirm.
EVs have their place, but a true sports car deserves this kind of tactility, a stirring sound track and 3 pedals. They’re about to be extinct 🥲

  • @wizzpet6562

Great review. In Canada the GTS 4.0 comes by default with the 360 mm GT steering wheel in alcantara and you can add the controls as an option without affecting the diameter. There is also an option called « GT sport steering wheel » which only converts the steering wheel in leather (they should have named that option « leather steering wheel » instead because people like myself thought it needed to be clicked to get that GT steering wheel. I find that odd that you can’t have the 360mm with controls on it in the UK. Are you sure about that?

    • @driven.videos
      @driven.videos  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks, Wizzpet! - John here. 😎 I have had a second look to make sure I've not missed something, and yep, unless I'm being an utter chimp (which is also a possibility), the UK configurator gives the option of only the 360mm wheel with no controls, or, the 375mm with. It seems strange that different variants of tech are available in different markets, but then stranger things have happened.

The car is quite the gem nice review and spot on. I was able to fix the Apple CarPlay issue with an inexpensive little device to go wireless. Configuring here in the states allows for GT steering wheel with controls but I wanted a plain buttonless wheel. I think the GTS best specs are included in the package ie: sports exhaust, pasm, Race Tex seats, sports chrono, PTV, mechanical limited slip on the manual transmission of course, and wheels. Going crazy on the configurator can bring you to GT4 prices. I wish parking sensors were an option here and not standard because now I have holes in my front and rear bumper. 😮

Worth noting that the 420nm figure is limited by the rating of the gearbox. Would be a bit higher otherwise. It's weird that Porsche never commissioned an uprated version from the supplier with a bit more capacity for handling torque.

The Cayman GTS 4L is a wonderful sports car, balance, poise, agility, great engine, great gear box immensely rigid chassis (41,000 Nm/deg) coupled with a grace and elegance few cars have. I have the former model 981 GTS which sounds even better than the 4L, I liked it so much its one of the few cars I have ever kept and I have a great line up of keepers (991.2 GT3 RS, 720S, 600LT (in BC) and most recently added a 296 GTB). I have driven both iterations of the Emira and didn't really warm to it, the weight distribution hurts it as it does older Lotus add to that the mediocre engine, gear box and linkage and well, its just not that great. On track I think it is one of the poorer Lotus where Exige>Evora>Emira. I did own two Lotus Exige in the past and didn't have great experiences (not terrible, just not that great.

Hi, I have a 2021 GTS 4.0 and I love it, however....the engine noise at tick over and low revs is awful- weird ticking noise. It has been described in other ways by other owners but the same basic issue, some say it's the injectors others not. I wonder if Porsche is second-guessing the EV Cayster at this point. The market has turned a little against EVs of late and looking at the spy shots of the EV car, it's clearly based on the same platform as the 992 (not a huge surprise, Caysters and 911s have always shared a platform). It probably wouldn't be a catastrophic amount of work to do an ICE version. Just a thought.

I had a 996 Turbo X50 once upon a time (my own car), loved it overall, but the turbo engine is what made me sell and move on to something else.
