  • Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 Litre 6 cylinder.
    When the 718 GT4 arrived last year it restored the faith of many Porsche devotees.
    It’s key tenet not so much it’s sublime handling, that was a given, more it was it’s mighty 4.0 litre naturally aspirated flat six engine.
    and now a sibling has arrived, this delightful 718 GTS which also packs that 4.0 litre flat six motor, so does it mean we should now buy this Cayman GTS instead of the GT4 ?
    well stay with me because I’m going to tell you 5 reasons why you might want to do just that with point number 5 making sense of the whole GTS thing.

Your average enthusiast won't reach the handling limitations of the GTS, so why fret over the GT4 when everything you need is right there with the GTS.

    Excellent review - first time I have seen one of your videos, and I like the script, the length and the professional delivery. I watched because I am keen on the car - I loved the 981 GT4 but would probably have preferred it without the GT bits (no front parking sensors on a GT car, why?). So I would go for a GTS. But I won't because I am happy with my M2 Comp - better value and more practical to offset the things the Cayman does better.

    Great review! Thanks Roger. I just sold my 14' 981 S w 6 MT, which i owned from new. It feels like the GTS 4.0 is too little, too late. The asking price is also ridiculous for a platform that has been around since 2013, not to mention the car's biggest flaw; very tall gearing. I think i will save my money for the very promising Corvette C8 Z06 which should come with a 5.5L 32v DOHC flat plane crank, pumping out upwards of 620hp @ a screaming 9k rpm, mated to the excelled 8 speed Tremec dual clutch for roughly similar money (in Murica). P.s: i am also sick and tired of Porsche not taking my money twice in exchange for the 991.2 GT3 and 981 GT4. They really know how to rub their clients the wrong way.

    Chris Nolan called - he wants his soundtrack back ;^) Even a 'Tenet' reference to boot! Well played sir. A very valid question and I agree that 'to track or not to track' is truly the question - and perhaps access to the GT4 anyway. Net-net, the tall gearing holds this 4.0 back and I'm betting on a Porsche adjustment here - be it changing the final drive and/or PDK...

    • @RogerBaileyOnCars

      @BillLee3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RogerBaileyOnCars I know advocating for an automatic is against the tradition of sports car fans, but the ratios of that transmission are just going to be so much better for this car. You'll be able to stay in the right RPM range through a LOT more of your driving. It'll just be the better car, even if you have to focus on handling the power rather than focusing on changing the gears...

    • @michaelsalter2473
      @michaelsalter2473 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BillLee3 Y I think if a PDK had been available I would probably have gone that way. I think when/if it is the majority of new buyers will opt to take PDK over the manual. I think/hope my manual will remain a desirable car for resale when, as an older gentleman, I can no longer get in and out! I suspect one of the aftermarket specialists will offer a shorter final drive at some point when there are enough on the road but I will wait and see how it drives first. Most road testers seem to feel its an amazing drive as it is and there will be advantages to having a car that does most of its high speed road work in 1 gear.

    • @BillLee3
      @BillLee3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelsalter2473 The stick will remain desirable because it may not be faster, but it'll be the fun track car setup as the car's value decreases and makes that actually reasonable for people to do (Most people can't _seriously_ track a $110K+ car).
      There are people already modifying the gear box to make 3rd, 4th and 5th have much closer ratios. That would at least allow you to use third a lot more in mountain passes. However, 1st and 2nd are much harder to change and they are really just too high. The PDK ratio in 1st/2nd/3rd (assuming they don't change it) should only get you to 43/75/104 mph instead of 54/85/121. That would mean it's much easier to keep it in the higher torque/power band of 4500-7500. The alternative is to drop the rear ratio and then change 3-6th so you aren't doing 4000 rpm at 80 on the freeway - but that's probably prohibitively expensive.

    • @michaelsalter2473
      @michaelsalter2473 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bill Lee just done the first 25 miles. I’m not going above 4500 rpm for first 1k miles but there is a lot of low down pull, even from 2k revs in 6th. I don’t think gearing will be an issue at all now I’ve driven it.

    Great review. While the 718 has more power, I’ll stick with my well-optioned 981 Boxster S for now. Top down with that exhaust note is phenomenal and more than enough power. Too much, actually, for normal don’t-get-thrown-in-jail driving, as are most Porsches.

    • @borinvlogs
      @borinvlogs ปีที่แล้ว

      do you still have your 981 boxster s? i am struggling to choose either 981 BS with famous 3.4L NA or 718 S with 2.5L F4. I like the sharper look of 718 and like the idea of running a newer car, less problems when it comes to MOT, and other issues and also like the fact that it can gain a lot more bhp by simply tweaking ECU by specialist and it will become a properly fast car that does not need to be worry when fast hot hatches or even cars like C63 or M3 (previous gen ones) come behind at the track (i do many times a year). Or just stick with 981 S and enjoy the sound and save money. So hard to choose.

      @@borinvlogs I actually sold my Boxster S and now own a 981 Spyder. While searching for my Boxster S, I did drive the 718 with the 2.5L engine and while it’s a very nice handling car with good low end torque, I hated the sound of the engine. It really comes down to personal preference but I really Ike the NA flat six engines. It’s what Porsche is known for. Good luck with your hunt!

    What a great review of a fabulous car. Is the 992 GTS good enough to be worth £50K more than this car? Would the extra power be needed or useable? Would the rear engine be a compromise compared to the mid engined Cayman GTS? I love both but which is the best car for British road use?

That was a 7K dollar repair which Porsche offered to pay half after 4 years of ownership , just of warranty. Fortunately the dealer paid the rest, second problem was a failed radiator cap that dumped the antifreeze. I bought a new one and no problem since. Hi Sruli, Best advice is to go drive both cars, If you're looking at new they are very different in engine feel and sound, the base having a small 4 cylinder turbo charged engine the GTS sports a large 6 cylinder motor and sounds more brutish. Last years GTS has that older 4 Cylinder and is very similar to the base car save a bit more power, lowered suspension and more standard kit, and a fair bit of alacantara trim. Oh and they are all brilliant ! - Roger

      @@RogerBaileyOnCars Thanks Roger., Actually am looking at buying new. I figure the base will be exciting enough. I was just wondering whether you need to be a Porsche aficionado to really appreciate the GTS or are mere mortals also able to appreciate it. Taking a test drive is nice, but won't satisfy my question about long term ownership. I would normally just get the base one as a first time it should be enough. It's just that the TH-cam is awash with reviewers stating that this car is the best thing since sliced bread. Sruli

    Lovely car. Very yellow :-))... I recall when these Cayman first came out people said they were the cars to buy if you "couldn't afford a 911". Then they drove one and said that Cayman's were made that little bit less powerful than the 911. If not, then they'd beat the 911. and people wouldn't buy them. They were that good.

    Nice review :) as always an erudite and superbly filmed production :))) - not sure the blur out of traffic really works though :)
    But with regard to your Click Bait 5 points:
    1) Availability - just because you can walk into a dealer and order a GTS doesn't mean you're going to get one ! Thinking of 2nd winter wave of COVID here :( - I don't know how Porsche UK works but I had no problem into walking into my dealer and buying a new GT4 off the floor at a good price - certainly didn't get any SA snootiness or attempted dealer markup!
    2) Practicality - the GT4 has as practical and warm cosseting feel as the GTS - maybe more so as it has more Alcantara ! Both are superb interiors and very similar - comes down to whether you prefer a furry or smooth skin knob and wheel - as a somewhat furry fellow I though you might like the stubble feel of Alcantara ;) - as a DD I find no problems whatsoever with the GT4 and really can't see any day to day practicality advantage with the GTS - even the Cup 2 tyres are reasonable in the wet with a modicum of careful driving
    3) Cost - you rightly point out the GT4 is 11k GBP more yet negate this advantage by pointing out the GT4 hasn't depreciated since September yet the GTS is expected to.
    4) Appearance - well this is very subjective with no clear advantage as to not having a rear wing and diffuser
    5) Drivability - you point out the GTS loses 5% in grip and cornering and whilst the GTS sounds an incredible drive it doesn't make it a better buy by having marginally less taught suspension and tyres!
    BTW I ordered a GTS 4.0 - but after being talked into trialing the GT4, I loved it and even without any desire to go tracking I’m not going to give it back! All in all both superb cars !!!!

The 718 generation isnt as limited as the previous generations. Residuals I think have already soften on the used market for both generations but by next year I think they will have had a deeper impact. Awaiting my 718 GTS 4.0 to arrive from the UK, being shipped in about 1 week to New Zealand. My journey in the sportscar world, started way back many years ago with a Lotus Esprit S2 before I was married. With kids, cars had to take the back burner but got back in initially with a Toyota MR2 Turbo. Gave up on that looking for more performance and jumped into a BMW M6F12, and what a glorious car that was with 560HP. But when pushed into corners on road & track was just too heavy to handle and feel right. Moved next into a Lamborghini 560-4 and that had all the drama and theatre as you can imagine, but just too hard riding for anything over a 30 minute drive and no luggage for any type of road trip. I was looking for something that I could enjoy for the odd track playday but also use for a weekend get away. Never drove a Porsche before and recently test drove a 718 2 litre manual and wow that was fun. Forgot as a driver, how great it felt, how engaging a manual transmission is. 718 handling was awesome. So I knew this was the answer I was looking for. Was surprised with the performance of the 2 litre (no Lambo) but fast enough for the open road. But was worried about the 4 cylinder residual value. It will be one of those car that is real easy buy and really hard to sell IMO. So like you say Roger the GTS 4.0 ticked all the boxes. Can't wait for it to arrive. I think it will be a car that I will have for quite a while.
