  • Camtasia Volume Leveling (a.k.a. Audio Compression) Audio Effect:
    The Camtasia Volume Leveling effect is an audio editing effect inside Camtasia that can be used to help you achieve better sound quality in your videos, especially where you are dealing with voices, as well as combining voices with music.
    Inconsistent volume levels can be caused by many situations. Here are a few examples:
    - Some people start out talking loud and then just seem to fade as they go along.
    - Some people just have a cadence in their voice that is a fluctuating style of delivery.
    - Some people move around too much and so the distance to the mic changes.
    - You may be doing an interview and each person speaks at a different volume level.
    - And finally, you may have clips from multiple sessions that will differ due to ambient noise differences, and slight variations in the production setup.
    Whatever the case, in Camtasia, you can use the Volume Levelling Audio Effect to deal with the problem.

    Wow! Great job Gord! Love the cool volume background - so proud of you man. Quietly passed 800 subs! Congratulations! I really like the blue screen background with the yellow colored animated texts. Great video man!

    Just when I thought you showed me EVERYTHING on Camtasia, you open up a treasure trove of new stuff. Thank you. I literally needed this right now, because I somehow goofed with my mic volume. I'd changed my preamp settings when I recorded with an instrument, and I forgot to switch it back to my normal video/mic settings. Whoops! So, this tutorial came at the right time. Kudos!

    Excellent video Gord. I haven't used the noise leveling in Camtasia as of yet because I've been doing everything in Audition. However, I think for my next video I will definitely delve more into the audio features of Camtasia 9.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you will be surprised how nice the results can be, especially when combined with the noise removal. I hope TechSmith will add a few more visual details to this effect so that we can be more accurate in what we are setting by moving the sliders around. I also use Audition, like you do, and it's awesome! I sometimes test the Camtasia audio output in Audition to see what it shows.

    • @topshelfva
      @topshelfva 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good suggestion about the comparison with Audition. I'm great at using and training others on Camtasia but I still struggle with my audio quality at times. It's a learning process.

      I have been working on the nuances of Noise Removal. Going to produce a video on that soon! We need to combine the Noise Removal with the Volume Leveling to get the best results. As you are doing, it's great to execute in Audition.

      Gord Isman Oh yes! Noise removal in Audition is my first step. I'm also experimenting with Noise Gating.

    Thank you Gord! This is a helpful video. I'm going to try this out. Do you have one on gain staging too? (I'll look through your channel to see that next.) I have a recording capturing system sound only and it seems to be too high. Plan to try out your tip to see if that fixes things or if I'll need to re-record and lower the system sound level.

      Thanks for your question. Can you tell me, are you only capturing your voice, and what kind of environment are you recording in? Can you describe the recording capturing system to me please. I'll make a suggestion after I learn a little emore.

    Great video! What do you recommend to put audio leveling on when JOINing more than 1 audios, what Threshold, Ratio, and Gain? I want to have the clearest balanced audio possible :)

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, thanks for your question. For me, if you are joining multiple audios, I would level each piece separately. I find that if the clips differ in background/ambient noise, you will need to tweak each one if you are a perfectionist. You literally have to tinker with the parameters. Try this: First test the "low", "medium" and "high" setting options and see which one is closest, then, use those values in the "custom" option and tune from there. Also, remember that to get "clearest", you also need to factor in the Noise Removal part of your tuning. Check out my other video for Noise Removal - th-cam.com/video/SJJzCE4zRyM/w-d-xo.html .

      Thank you! Yeah I have 266 different audio and connectors audios to go through for each lesson I am creating. I went through each one and removed the noise and pops and mouse clicks with audio software. Just trying to balance them in Camtasia. So far I find -15 Ratio 8 Gain 7 the best? Does that sound weird?

    • @GordIsman

      If the tracks are similarly recorded - same conditions, then a fast trick is to "copy effects" and "paste effects", assuming other things are similar. I use this often. This will save you a lot of time. Select a given track, then with the right mouse button menu, select "Copy Effects", then, you can multi-select a bunch of clips to apply that tuned effect to in one step! If you don't want to copy all the effects, for example, just the volume levelling effect, then, select that effect item and with the right mouse button option and then select "copy selected effects", and then you can paste to apply that effect to another single clip or a set of clips, all in one step!

    May I ask what microphone you're using when you're doing the screencast? It sounds great.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a great question! For the intro/outro and scenes where you see me on-camera, the microphone is my Zoom H5 with the Shotgun microphone attachment. When I'm shooting the screencast part, I'm using my Blue Bluebird mic. I got the Blue Bluebird (large diaphragm condenser) microphone. I chose this microphone after going to a Music store where I was able to test all kinds of microphones and I found the one that best complimented my voice.

    Hi Gord, this is very helpful! I use Camtasia a lot and found your video to be the most useful. I have been using your volume leveling and noise removal tips. It made my audio quality a lot better. I have a question though. If I have multiple clips added to my track, is there a way to adjust the volume level and noise removal settings in a batch mode? This would guarantee uniformity and save time. I cannot seem to be achieve this even with all clips on the track selected. Thank you!

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Julie, I'm not sure what you mean by "batch mode"? When I want to copy my noise removal or volume leveling (now called Volume Compression), I copy the effect from a given clip and paste it onto another clip/selected batch of clips. Once it's copied, you'll see "Effect Added" appear on the screen - once for each place it was added. That said, when I add the Volume Compression, it seems that, if the clip had gain adjustments, I still always have to adjust the gain level after, even though it copied the right level of compression (e.g. low, medium, heavy) from the copied effect. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions. There's a link in the video description to get on a call, if you wish.

      @@GordIsman Thanks so much for the detailed reply, Gord. I meant to select all the clips and adjust the settings of volume leveling and noise removal together but this does not work. Your reply makes sense. I'll try to do copy and paste next time. Thanks again!

      They both do the same thing but the "Gain" allows you to select multiple tracks and adjust the volume all at once.

    Hi Gord, at 9:33 I believe you mean to say the low (volume variation) has less dynamic range. Thus making the breathes less apparent.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Carlson, thanks for your note.. With "low" versus "high" compression, you do retain more dynamic range, but in reference to the breath, there is also the volume variation aspect we are looking at as well. I should have been more clear... thank you.

    Thanks but Its bit too highlevel for me. I have done some screen capture but the screen capture volume is low when I produce it as a video file. If I select "High" in audio leveling - will it boost the volume ?

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Vinod, the audio leveling does some adjusting to the gain (volume) but after the compression - low, medium, high. This gain (volume) is mostly to adjust for the lost gain in compression. To REALLY focus on adding more volume, use the Gain Audio property feature. Once you select a clip, look on the right-hand-side Properties area and select the Audio Properties tab (at the top right of the screen) where you will find the Gain parameter to adjust the volume of the selected media.
