    Headphones was a game changer for me especially when editing. Do you think that soundproofing your recording studio is an absolute must or can you just take it out in editing? What's your best advice on that?

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Professor Nez! If you can get a pretty clean track recorded and filter out the ambient room noise well with the application of a Noise Removal audio effect treatment, then why bother with the added expense of the acoustical stuff? Of course, it's an option to add acoustical treatment, and you may have the purist's desire to achieve pristine quality, but DO YOU NEED IT? You do your share of LIVE broadcasts and so there can be noise to contend with from the audio quality of the interviewee(s) as well. More variables for you. You have a great quality mic and I think your audio quality is quite good! I'm not sure you need to spend money for that added level of sound treatment. All that said, when I get into doing some Voice Over Pro work, I will be pursuing more perfection in my audio production quality to enhance my mellifluous voice, as you say, even more, but what we have for TH-cam videos, I believe is quite acceptable.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should have given you a simple answer. For your setup, I'm pretty sure that you will do just fine by editing out the ambient noise, without the need for acoustic treatment. I've not heard any nasty room dynamics coming through your recordings.

    Hello Gord,
    Greetings from India!
    Firstly thanks a lot for your kind tips on screen casting and other video editing stuff... I have been watching you for many months and following your tips for my technical screen casts. I use Camtasia 9 and Audacity for my Software tutorial podcasts (I train people on Python software) which involves screen recording and annotations. Since I live in an area which is surrounded by traffic, churches, mosques, schools, factories; my videos have been spoiled many times as I am about to finish them there is some kind of noise from the above said sources. It is really annoying and taking many re-takes to finish video and in the due course lot of frustration. I tried going to a remote hill side to record a podcast but wind is my enemy as it is directly blowing into my Blue Yeti mike, lack of internet, lack of power source are other problems. It started as a hiccup and in no time it became my nightmare. I can't afford building a soundproof booth.
    But in the above video, you explained how you can use Camtasia's noise removal option. But what should I do if some hawker/ice cream vendor shouts and that picked up in my screen cast? How to remove that audio spike? Because street hawkers are very common in Asian countries especially in India. Not just that, a prayer call from a nearby mosque or temple, vegetable vendors, house wives gossiping etc will ruin my work easily. My video will definitely not sound professional with the above menaces.
    I have been thinking seriously on this issue for a longtime. There are times I booked a hotel in Goa on a beach side and shut the doors and completed my screen casting, but that is not possible always. Is there a tool or application or a method to root out this problem. I even stopped my screen casting these days simply procrastinating things and waiting for the perfect day to shoot. I had a great loss due to this menace.
    I even doubt sometimes "Is noise removal is so important when content is the king" . I am bitten by perfection bug and in a dilemma for a long time.
    Please help me on this. A thousand thanks from India
    Seenu

      Hi Srinivas, have you ever tried to use a lav mic, or a shotgun mic? Given that you have such a noisy environment, and a condenser mic (Yeti), I'm pretty sure the noise removal will not alone achieve the quality level result you are looking for. And, if you over-process on the noise removal, the vocal quality will get messed up. In other words, I think a different type of mic (i.e. lav or shotgun) might be better for you to do the tutorial recordings. I say this because when you have those "outside" noises and sporadic things going on, it's hard to filter those out. Did you play with the different microphone settings on the Yeti - I believe there are 3 to try? I still think that your first step would be to use a wired lav mic - not too expensive, and that should help improve things somewhat. I personally use a shotgun mic and the mic is more directionally focused, resulting in a recording with a lot of that outside noise absent from the recording.

      How to manage not showing up the taskbar items/icons i.e. don't want to show up these on my videos. Is it thru defining custom recording area instead of full screen? How to do that?

    Hi, do you have any tips on removing echo. The recording we have are in an industrial setting and the voices bounce off the concrete a lot.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eric. To deal with echo/reverb issues, I export the audio portion of the video track to create a .wav file. Then I edit it externally in Adobe Audition, where I can utilize a reverb remover plugin. I then import the improved .wav file back into Camtasia. I use the Accusonus Reverb Remover Pro. The Reverb Remover Pro is part of a plugin bundle, but it's on a monthly subscription now. I purchased it before the monthly charging model. So, I suggest you look at this video by Curtis Judd (th-cam.com/video/r1zRfEk-2os/w-d-xo.html) to see two recommended echo/reverb remover plugins that you can buy for a one-time price. I'm not sure if you wish to do this more advanced audio editing, but it should help improve the recording. If you want to share a short clip, I will show you how it can improve by applying the Reverb Remover Pro plugin.

    What version of Camtasia are you using? I don't have that "analyze" button when I put in the noise removal effect. I use Camtasia 3 for Mac and I know Camtasia 9 for Windows is basically the same thing. Or maybe they have a few differences? Either way, I was able to figure out how to use the noise removal effect properly! Thanks :)

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that the two releases are very close in functionality, but there are some differences. With the releases of Camtasia 3 (Mac) and Camtasia 9(Windows) was the ability to share the project files with most of the functionality usable in both. This aspect enabled the ability to work on the same project in on 2 different OS platforms.

    I'm a former Captivate user, trying to learn Camtasia. How does this global application of noice cancelling help remove an occasional "um" or deep inhale sound? I'm used to being able to select that specific portion of the audio image and either cut it out or simply white it out - which does not modify the length of the recording. Thanks for helping out this newbie.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the noise is still very loud then it is likely that your source recording is a tough one to get clean. I also find that the best results are achieved when you have a recording where there's talking head video and not too much noisiness in the background - e.g. indoors versus outdoors. You might want to do your recording again and try and make it cleaner if that's an option.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, not like the feature in Camtasia Studio 8. In Camtasia 9, the "analysis" feature in the Noise Removal is like a mystery and does nothing to help with things like breathing details to remove. You would have to separate your audio track and work on it outside Camtasia with 3rd party app solutions (e.g. Adobe Audition, Audacity) and utilize plugins that solve this kind of issue, and then bring the track back in. Of course, you can always edit every single breath manually in Camtasia, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry that I don't use Audacity much. I use Adobe Audition when I'm doing external desktop recording to produce an audio file to bring in. That said, this post by TechSmith might shed some insights on things to tinker with, even though it's about using the Camtasia Recorder. Another idea is to run the video clip through something like Handbrake and it just might smooth something out with the frame rate execution of the clip that will make it align better when you bring in the audio part from audacity?

    Before asking any questions I have to appreciate your perfect TH-cam Channel. When I want to analyze the voice I select short space between my speech by using the red pointer, but when I click on 'Analyze', an error occurs and contains this message, "Noise training cannot be performed on all the selected media. Adjust the selection and try again. Would you please help me out with that?

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's strange, I've not seen that message before. I suggest that you make a selection a little larger - the selection between the green and red playhead handles, before you press "analyze". Even though you may only have a short bit for the sample before your audio gets into the flow, sample a greater length just to test to confirm that your sample size is large enough. If that solves the problem, then you need to just sample a larger patch. Let me know how you make out?

      Hey MrEye4get, good observation! I actually, in this video, and many others, am recording in two different locations, and I'm using two mics. In the intro parts, I'm using my Zoom H5 in a studio room with lots of lights. But, when I'm doing the screencast recording, I'm sitting at another desk, in another room, and using my Blue Bluebird mic which brings more base effect to my voice. Based on the demands of the two spaces, I chose to use the two mics. If I was to limit to one, for consistency, I would have used my Zoom H5 external mic - with Shotgun attachment. That would have produced a more consistent sound. I

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Play with both settings. I like to work with the default and then add/subtract from there. If you lose too much bass, then dial back the settings. Obviously, if it sounds worse than the original, then don't apply the Noise Removal as not all clips benefit from the application. I find clips with inconsistent noise are the most difficult to get to work out with a clean benefit.

    • @GordIsman
      @GordIsman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Shaz, sorry to hear you are having trouble. Some kinds of background noise don't get cleared well. It works best on noises that are consistent in pattern/form - i.e. not sporadic. For example, people talking, dogs barking, sirens, the sound of a lawnmower - these kinds of noises can't easily be cleared, yet sounds of a computer fan or heating/cooling system or just room ambient noise are filtered out better. As I mention in the video, don't over-process if it messes up the voices - if you have voices in the video.
